“If you live in America in the 21st century you’ve probably had to listen to a lot of people tell you how busy they are. It’s become the default response when you ask anyone how they’re doing: “Busy!” “So busy.” “Crazy busy.” It is, pretty obviously, a boast disguised as a complaint.”

QUIT SLOUCHING!! Have I got your attention? :)
My husband sends me great info like this regularly (he’s a fitness trainer). These tips are extremely useful for anyone who sits all day (and probably incorrectly). It’s not just the old “sit up straight” talk either:
- Sitting provides stability to perform high visual & motor control tasks
- General Goal: Optimal Sitting Posture = Design of Chair + Posture
- Specific Goal: Seated Minimal Muscle Cocontraction + Neutral Spine
- Utilize Backrest & Do Not Slump Forward (Excessive Kyphosis)
- General Backrest Inclination: 90-105°
- Lumbar supports — Help Achieve Neutral Lordotic Curve
Another great reminder: make a point of regularly sitting up, stretching, and moving around. Got a laptop? Try switching during the day from a seated desk to a standing desk (if you have one; or if you have a bookcase with adjustable shelves you can set one to the right height and try that out).
Watch out for your health, because if you don’t no one else will!
ps: If you know who actually created this medical illustration, please let me know! That name embedded in this JPG is not the illustrator. So, another tip: Don’t claim to own illustrations that aren’t yours! GRRR!)

Today I'm working on painting a series of vignettes about a little kitty who talks a long walk.
In unrelated, but more interesting news, if you're a fan of The Dark Crystal or The Labyrinth, I think you might like looking at this. I sure did.
Also, are you going to #LA12SCBWI? (Is it weird to use Twitter hash tags outside of Twitter?) And if you are, how are your preparations coming along?
And one more question... After the conference, Hubby and I are driving from L.A. to Seattle. Do you have any suggestions for places to stop along the way? Maybe a cool book store or a good place to eat? I'd love your advice! Please and thank you. :)

Yup, that's right, it is final artwork time!!! I'm so excited to get started on the plasticine art. Can you tell? It has been so quiet on the blog lately and I didn't even even get a chance to make a July desktop calendar- so sorry everyone, but we made a last minute dash to the cottage.
So this is what is going on over here. I've been mixing and kneading lots of plasticine. It's a great way to keep the arms toned ;) I also keep track of my ratios on a sheet of paper, a sort of mixing chart, so if I run out of a colour I can refer back to it and make it again.
I'm SOOO excited to get cracking on the plasticine art...I think I already said that, oh well. I still feel like I need to pinch myself most mornings because I feel so incredibly lucky and honoured to be working on this picture book project. The story is such a perfect fit. And I have had such a wonderful time bringing Stewie the skink to life in my sketches from Lisa Dalrymple's fab manuscript. I still have a few revisions awaiting approval, that might need further tweaking. It has been a great learning experience to go through my sketches with my editor, Christie Harkin. She gives great constructive feedback, and our brainstorming sessions always leave me feeling energized with tons of great ideas. She totally rocks!!
For those of you who follow me on FB, you may have noticed a bunch of Stewie(the real Stewie) pics that I shared yesterday from Lisa's recent trip to Pinery Park. She shot some fabulous photos of him. And it turns out, after lots of searching with the naturalist outdoors, Stewie surprised them all by hiding under a desk in their office. Stewie found Lisa! That silly Stewie :)

It's easy to fall into the tendency to paint foliage in a relatively cursory or generalized way, compared to the way we would paint a figure. If we were to give the same loving artistic attention to a tree or a bunch of leaves that we give to a face or a nude figure, then our foliage painting would take a huge leap forward.
In this foreground detail of the painting above, he observes the character and the color of each leaf, and records how the colors change as the leaves move in and out of shadow.
But a forest is more than the sum of its leaves, or even of its trees. Mønsted improvises a different toolset for the far masses of foliage, generalizing and softening where he needs to.
Improvisation and resourcefulness is vital to painting foliage. The tools and methods that we learn from painting casts or figures in the academy don't really serve us outdoors as we face the changefulness and immateriality of nature.
As we've seen in this series, complete imitation of every leaf in a lush landscape is probably not possible or even desirable, nor perhaps is the other extreme of ultra-softness and generalization. One can be faithful to the character of the plant without copying or imitating every detail. Instead, nature must be re-created or "represented" in paint on the canvas.
Asher B. Durand, in his influential 1855 essays "Letters on Landscape Painting" draws this very distinction between imitation and representation. When painting a tree, he says, “direct imitation is impossible." Instead the artist should strive to “represent this foliage in every essential characteristic, without defining the forms of individual leaves. To do this, some analysis of its structure is necessary.”

Recently on Twitter, I was asked by a group of librarians if I would design a League of Librarians T-shirt. Apparently, they had adopted the name for their team in The Summer Throwdown, an online competition between teachers and librarians to see who could read the most books over the summer months. Originally, they were Team Librarian, but took on the monicker of League of Librarians (from the 2nd volume in the Lunch Lady series) to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents. Needless to say, I was honored and much to their surprise, designed something up and placed it on Zazzle. Their enthusiasm was just fantastic. After the book was published, I did receive a few messages from librarians who were pretty angry about the book. This really upset me because the book was meant to be a cheeky love letter to librarians and I hate the thought of my work upsetting a group of people that I hold in such high regard. As an author, you can receive heaps of praise, but you remember the few voices of dissent above all else. The excitement from this group over on Twitter erases all of that beyond measure.

I took a much-needed break at the beach. It was hard to do this– I'm in the middle of some exciting projects, with more waiting in the wings– and I was afraid of losing momentum. That said, I haven't had a vacation in a long time. It was so refreshing!
There were spectacular sunrises. (I'm still an early riser, even on vacation.)
And clouds. And wind. And awesome thunderstorms!

Tor Fruergaard’s graduation film Venus is billed as an “erotic comedy,” but it’s a surprisingly sweet and sensitive portrayal of a couple resorting to extreme measures to reignite the spark in their relationship. Created at the National Film School of Denmark in 2010, Venus won the animation prize at Slamdance last January, and has screened in numerous festivals including Annecy.

This is a pretty rotten drawing. I wasn't feeling it from the moment I started it. I just saw this bike, at the Crich 1950s day, and thought it looked interesting. I wanted to do something interesting with it. But I didn't. Then when I got home and started cross hatching the hell out of it I was still not feeling it. So, I just got it finished and wrote some nonsense on the page. You can tell by my hand writing I wasn't even feeling that.
However, despite the fact that I've just slated it, there is one moment in this drawing that I like. You see when I've made a drawing that makes me cringe I feel that as long as I create a little magical moment within it - whether that be a line or a texture or a detail - I can forgive it. So, yes, there is one moment that makes me smile. Can you spot it?
