Hey, all you reader guys out there. We survived yesterday. You what day I mean--the one devoted to all the stuff that makes MANLY MEN like us shudder in our manly boots. The day devoted to kissing and hugging and romance. In other words, Valentine's Day, the one devoted to looooove!!!

So to get the thought of all that stuff out of our minds, let's ask ourselves--what do guys LOVE? And the answer to that is obvious--GRAPHIC NOVELS!! Yes, indeed, graphic novels are great! You've got exciting stories, laughs, heroes punching out villains, and sometimes whole planets blow up! So let me tell you about a few graphic novels that I and a regular contributor to this blog have read and enjoyed lately.
This was a great story. Jedi Master Mace Windu speeds to the planet Simocadia to stop a Separatist invasion but Yoda appears and tells him it's a mistake. Mace goes anyway and has to face the results of his decision. This one has lots of good Star Wars action, cool artwork and Mace Windu, one of the best Jedi Masters. How could you go wrong?
If you like cartoon series with whiz-bang action and goofball humor like Fairly Odd Parents or TUFF Puppy, you'd like this graphic novel series. Loud Boy is one of the five kids who've discovered they have super powers. In this one, Loud Boy and friends are charged by their Uncle Stanley to keep the Flooggget out of the hands of Old Fogey and his evil cohorts. But along the way, Loud get sucked into a video game--literally! Unless he can win the game and get out, every kid on earth will disappear into cyberspace.Can Loud Boy do it? Read and see--and have a really good time as you do!
Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown by Jarret J. Krosoczka I've been a fanof Lunch Lady, the cafeteria supervisor and crime fighter, for a long time. In this book, Lunch Lady and her sidekick Betty.are working a summer camp--which supposedly has a swamp monster in the lake. It couldn't be true--or could it? Lunch Lady will have to use all their high-tech school cafeteria crime-fighting equipment to save the camp! I really like these graphic novels--mystery, suspense, and good campy fun. CAMPY fun!!!! I just made a joke! Har, Har Har, Har!!!!!
And to prove that I'm not the only one who enjoys graphic novels, here's a review from our old friend Michael:
Lunch Lady, book 8 Lunch Lady and the Picture Day Peril by Jarret J. Krosoczka Lunch Lady, Betty, Hector, Terrence, and Dee are all back! When a school photographer scams school kids out of thousands of dollars and then runs, it's up to Lunch Lady to find her, or the student council's fund will be ruined. I do think that the scene transitions are a bit jerky, but there's an action scene that I consider the best of the series so far. Plus, does the ending suggest the start of a serial? I guess book 9 will reveal that. But for comic book readers, this is a good one to check out!
And here's one more from Michael:
Mal and Chad, book 3 Belly Flop by Stephen McCraine Comic-book duo Mal and Chad are back for their third and longest adventure yet! When Mal learns that Megan is pushing him away, he wonders how cool he has to be to hang out with her. Also, a talent show is being held at Einstein Elementary, and Mal sees this as an opportunity to show his level of coolness. Plus you can expect plenty of episodes with his inventions. Comedy, romance, sci-fi, inspiration, and action all come into play in this book as well as the other books in this series. As far as graphic novels go, this is one of the best! I was a little bored during the first few chapters because this book focuses more on the romance and inspiration than anything else. The five elements I listed above did not blend together as well as it has in previous books. However, what action there was was very well-done, and this book is definitely worth reading! We are feeling incredibly grateful here in the Krosoczka house to be celebrating Halloween this evening. The hurricane's fury avoided us completely. Our hearts go out to all of the folks in the affected areas. And I feel lucky to even be home. I had been in Austin for the Texas Book Festival. I had already canceled Sunday's appearances, but was scheduled on a flight out on Sunday morning. On Saturday afternoon, while signing books with Dav Pilkey, Lisa McMann and Mac Barnett, I glanced at my phone and saw that Massachusetts was in a state of emergency. I took off to pack my bags and head to the airport and got on the last flight of the evening. Sadly, many of my Northeast author friends are still stuck in Austin. Not a bad city to be stuck in, but I would far rather be home with my kids. Not only to shelter them from the storm, but to decorate pumpkins like this:

Not only to I feel fortunate to have my house in order, I feel so lucky that folks like my work enough to use my characters as inspiration for their Halloween celebrations. Check out the awesome Nash family below! I had to pick myself up off the floor when I saw how they decked themselves out for their Halloween shenanigans.

For Nora's birthday, her mom sneaked all of her Lunch Lady books from her room, mailed them to me and then Nora was presented with the entire LL collection, autographed on her big day.
This is the thank you note Nora sent. It is simply the best ever and it will hang in my studio to remind me of the kids reading my books!

In exactly two months, I will be celebrating the release of Lunch Lady and the Picture Day Peril by offering free virtual comic workshops throughout the day! We'll all write one big ol' comic together and learn more about the medium of comics. LL #8 will have published one week prior, so come armed with a few questions about Lunch Lady's latest adventure!
Recently on Twitter, I was asked by a group of librarians if I would design a League of Librarians T-shirt. Apparently, they had adopted the name for their team in The Summer Throwdown, an online competition between teachers and librarians to see who could read the most books over the summer months. Originally, they were Team Librarian, but took on the monicker of League of Librarians (from the 2nd volume in the Lunch Lady series) to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents. Needless to say, I was honored and much to their surprise, designed something up and placed it on Zazzle. Their enthusiasm was just fantastic. After the book was published, I did receive a few messages from librarians who were pretty angry about the book. This really upset me because the book was meant to be a cheeky love letter to librarians and I hate the thought of my work upsetting a group of people that I hold in such high regard. As an author, you can receive heaps of praise, but you remember the few voices of dissent above all else. The excitement from this group over on Twitter erases all of that beyond measure.
My favorite part of foreign translations of the Lunch Lady books is learning what the gadgets translate to. Well, scratch that. That's my second favorite part. My favorite part is the thought that kids who live on the other side of the planet, who speak a language I don't eve understand, can read one of my books. That is just mind-blowing!

At a recent visit to Motts Road Elementary outside of Syracuse, the librarians had a brilliant idea. They hid Lunch Lady throughout the library and kids had to find all 19 hidden ladies in yellow. It wasn't a competition, just a fun exercise to pump the kids up for my visit, and of course -- to get them exploring their school library! (They even put their own lunch ladies' faces on a few!)

I had a great week of school visits in Merrimack, NH visiting with the students at Reeds Ferry, Mastricola and Thorntons Ferry Schools. Everyone went all out! Check out the Bagheads that arrived at my presentations:
The lunch ladies at all of the schools were gifted yellow aprons from the reading teachers. They certainly had fun playing with the kids' perceptions of them. They fastened Spork Phones to their visors, and even provided dinner theater, chasing teachers and librarians through the cafeteria at lunchtime!
Kids invented their own super-creative gadgets. Their brilliant ideas were posted at each school for all to see!
Every detail of the trip was so well-considered!

Yesterday, I dropped my daughter off at preschool and then I travelled to Washington, Oregon, California, Nebraska, Arizona, Texas, Idaho, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Alabama, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine—at least that's what I can remember off the top of my head. And then when I was finished up with my book talks on the latest Lunch Lady book, I was home in time to tuck my daughter into bed.
I love living int he future.

I'm not certain exactly how UStream's metrics work, but on average there were about 50 people signed in to watch each book talk. While I'm live, I can see who is signed in, but I'm not too sure how many people watched, but didn't sign in to chat. Most signed in from a classroom or library, however a few watched on their own. Averaging all of that out, there were about 40 sets of eyeballs behind each "live viewer". There is no way to know for certain, but this could mean that I spoke to about 14,000 young readers throughout the day. All from the comfort of my studio. I'm astounded that there is that much of an interest to watch me yap away about my books. But I can tell you with certainty—I'm incredibly grateful.

The time is almost here for the Mutant Mathletes! In just under a week, the latest Lunch Lady comic will be made available to the world! When Hector, Dee and Terrence join the Thompson Brook mathlete team, they have more than tough equations to contend with. Fortunately, our lady in yellow keeps close tabs on her kids and she's there to save the day when it needs saving!
I hope that you will all join me in my studio viaUStream.tv/channel/StudioJJK on the day of the book's publication on March 27th. I'll be going live every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. EST to 3 p.m. EST. This time around, I'll also have a special evening edition at 7 p.m. for public libraries, book clubs and anyone else who may not be able to tune in during daytime hours.
I look forward to answering your questions and teaching you how to draw Lunch Lady and Betty! Also, as a special treat to those connecting, I'll be providing a link to exclusive behind-the-scenes content, which you can use with your students to learn about the revision process.

My work has never been featured in the Scholastic Book Club and I'm delighted that Lunch Lady will be my first book to make it to the club! Look for it in the "Lucky" edition, on the cover of the catalogue of all places!

I've had a wonderful few days visiting with the wonderful students of Hess Elementary in Mays Landing, NJ. The 1,400 students were pumped, no doubt thanks to the dedicated librarians who enlisted help from both the art teacher and the lunch ladies!

These 14 lunch ladies and lunch dudes serve up lunch to 1,400 students daily! 500 of which are a part of the school's Breakfast Bunch as well! That's a lot of food. True superheroes!
