1. Morning Sketch

The hill I can see from my studio. It's actually a ridge above the highway. Sometime I see goats grazing up there. Many times in the afternoon there are turkey vultures catching wind currents and gliding around the hill.

3. School Carnival Drawing

Our little charter school puts on a Carnival every year to raise money and to give the families, faculty and community a chance to come together and have some fun. Last year I made a little piece of art for the posters used to promote the carnival. The image was also put on t-shirts which sold out within hours! I was proud that they brought in a nice bit of money for the school. This year's image will be put onto t-shirts, root beer mugs and posters- fingers crossed for some more good fund raising!

4. Ta-Da!

A few days ago I got to wrap up another book project. This one a picture book. For the last number of month I have been juggling many projects at once. Now instead of 3 active projects, I am down to 2- and it feels so great to have this one finished. I can't remember when it comes out, but I'll let you know...

5. My Agent is Not Only a Fabulous Agent- she's Brilliant Writer an Innovator Also

My agent at Red Fox Literary, Abi Samoun , has written a couple of books that are being published the traditional way, but this one is something different- She and illustrator, Elizabeth Haidle , are creating this crowd source funded book about Nikola Tesla

I feel so very lucky to be represented by someone who is a creative force in her own right.

9. It is Crunch Time- Hey, How Many Years is that Supposed to Last Anyways?

A sublime collision of deadlines. I was looking at the current projects on my drawing table and thinking how different they all are. One is a lot ore edgy than I have ever taken my work, one is younger than I have ever taken my work,  one is another Princess Posey book and another 2 are a new series featuring an entirely new style...4 distinct styles on 4 distinct projects. I used to worry about that- having too many styles, but it's a funny thing- when I get a project or write a book- it seems that each story/series/book wants a different style. Somewhere in them all is a common thread.

Today Fred is out front working on the front yard- a space so neglected in the past that we received a note from the city saying that our treeless, shrubless yard was a fire hazard (some bored  person with no life complained about the length of our lawn)... Just what was going to catch on fire is still a mystery, but anyways, Fred has been doing some serious landscaping out there.

We were talking this morning about that thing inside of people/animals that makes them unique an creative and gives them a vision/drive...We were talking about people we have known who have lit that on fire and created amazing things and those who let the fire go out and now blame everyone for it and can't seem get their footing despite a multitude of tried to help them do that...

13. The Fault of Our Stars

My morning today: woke up, made coffee, fed fish, removed blanket from parakeets' cage, fed parakeets (Coco and Carl), watered garden, listened to npr morning edition while beginning this morning's paintings, took bath. My baths for the past week or so have been long. I put a few drops of lavender oil into the hot water, get a tall glass of water and a cup of coffee, turn on the audio book The Fault of Our Stars and soak. Today I finished the book and I have to say it was brilliant and felt so real an non-contrived. There was a scene in the book where the main characters go to Amsterdam. The description of the setting made me remember how much I love to travel- the other worldliness of it.

The Fault of Our Stars in a YA novel. I haven't read one of those in ages. The last one I read was friend Jay Asher's 13 Reason's Why (also completely brilliant). Anyhow- I was balling in the tub and after the book was done, I thought-about that part of life- the teenage years- the part where you begin to figure out who you are, or rediscover who you are, or reinvent yourself- what a fragile and amazing time that is...

14. The Garden in March

Here is an sign of how busy things have been the last few months- when daylight's saving time came, I didn't have to change the time on my car's clock . That's sad, but true.

I'm in love with the work I am doing right now- and loving my drawing tablet. So much less stress when you can backtrack and not have to start over..or just keep what is working and edit from there without losing the life in the thing- and that's the big trick, isn't it? Lots of people can put marks on a page, but can you imbue those marks with life? That's the magic.

Here is the garden right now. The kale is almost done, so I have to yank that and add more soil from the worm bin . Then I need to plant some more lettuces. You can never have too many greens.

15. More From my Birthday

So, as you get older- and this is no news flash for anyone, right? Birthdays shift a bit in their excitement level and their meaning. This year's was very mellow.  It was all about looking to the future and getting rid of the stuff that isn't working. It was a simple celebration. Fred mixed up some lovely martinis (mine was some sort of raspberry creation.) Fred and his mom bought me some lovely cashmere sweaters and a cashmere hat. The martini is pictured here in my office because I still had to get some painting done. The girl in the picture on the wall is for a super cute picture book coming out soon. Anyhow- this year is going to be one full of change and exciting things happening. Off with things dragging energy down and in with new experiences and adventures.

17. The First Spear

This blog has been very quiet. There is so much happening in my life right now with projects, that honestly, when I am not working, I am eager to get out of my studio when I have a free moment or two.

There are so many projects going on that I have the art residing in other places in the house. A friend of mine, an archaeologist who has a office full of research papers, told me that she only allows one in her office at a time. I am trying that and it seems to help keep me focused and feeling less overwhelmed.

I wish I could show more of what i have been working on, but I will have to wait until things are published or very close to being published to do so.

The rainy season started off strong here, and then fizzled. Yesterday the earth around here got a little drink.

Out in the garden, the first asparagus spear has emerged!

19. Hungry For Change - Official Trailer

The art of healthy eating requires a lot of knowledge and a willingness to devote energy to preparing food. We try so hard to make good choices- eliminating anything white, eating organic- especially for the foods that have a high pesticide and herbicide load (like apples) and making food using only ingredients that grandma would have recognized.  YOu see something like this movie and you realize, how much the decks are stacked against consumers.

So, the frustrating thing is that even if you eat this great diet, you find out that the couch is full of flame retardants, or that you sleep on a toxic mattress or that the water you drink contains antidepressants and plastics...ugh.

This movie is well worth watching. Especially the part about how much sugar kids get in things like milk - not chocolate milk, just regular...shocking. No wonder our population is so unhealthy.

The kicker is that our tax monies subsidize this unhealthy yuck- yet, healthy foods not only have to compete with loads of advertising, but also chemicals that don't have to be listed that have various effects on the brain and the big corporations get our tax money. People eat the "food like products" and get sick, then the pharmaceutical companies get their cut, then the insurance industry- it is all really, really disgusting.

21. January, so Far...

Our New Year's tree was up until about a week ago. 2012 was a tough year for us as far as juggling projects, added drama, family members with health issues and finding the time to unwind. It seems to me from talking with friends, that 2012 was a particularly challenging year for a lot of people. On the flip side, 2012 was a great year for creating new projects and making professional strides and making good memories with family and friends over great meals and drinks. Fred has become very good and making martinis- the one here is my current favorite- a raspberry martini.

Here I am last week at me dear friend, Sharon Lovejoy's pad. She hosted this month's meeting of our Childrens Book Writers critique group- KW for short. That's me sharing a storyboard I'm working on for a book I am SO very excited and proud of. I almost didn't make the meeting because I was so wrapped up in busy-ness and the schedule and this and that, but I'm happy that I did. The amazing group of women in my KW group are always so thoughtful, uplifting, challenging and supportive. I think we all come away from the meeting renewed and unstuck and inspired.

22. Quack Watch- allergy testing putting stuff in you hands

I just heard this totally psycho "allergy testing" method- someone we know actually did this and believes it-  Can you say, "The Secret"?? I think that guy from "The Secret" book went o jail for murder, didn't he??

23. Quick Update

The garden is looking good these days- must be all of the "ladies" (what Fred calls the worm from our worm bin). There really is a huge difference in the garden since they have been busy turing food scraps into garden gold. The asparagus that I planted last year hasn't come up yet this year. I hope it does- there really isn't anything like fresh asparagus snapped right out of the ground. Do you know that when they grow, they shoot up straight out of the ground- just perfect asparagus spears.

This was the sunset a couple of days ago. The neighbors that I was cursing last year for planting an avocado tree (they get to be around fifty feet tall) right in our view, trimmed it. I am grateful for their courteous gesture.

On the drawing table right now- 2 picture books. Both on tight schedules and both very different. I'm digging putting them together. I think that they are both going to be very special.

We had our dear friends, Sharon and Jeff, over last night. Sharon has been indispensable with one of the picture books. I would be light years behind in distilling all of this picture book stuff without her.

Fred just made me a chocolate-tini. He's getting very good mixing drinks. it is our evening thing these days. We watch a Downton Abbey (which we both love) and have a drink before doing some reading and work and winding down...it's a nice ritual.

25. Sad News...Please Help Gretel if You Can

20130122122221-paintgranny.png

I've been virtual blogging friends with Gretel Parker for 6 years or more. Over the years I have read her blog regularly and "visited" her cottage in the countryside. She and Andy shared images of their gardening, walks , bike rides, cricket games and told stories about their lives. These two had been together for years and were the real deal...

On January 21st,  Andy died unexpectly .  Here is  a link to a fundraising site for Gretel. Please help, if you can.
