4. New Currents…

wharf

Taken a some time ago, my daughter and I posing on a pier that became one of our favorite places to walk. I know I’ve this said before, but I really like the rustic look of this place.

I’d also like to wish a Happy Easter to those who celebrate it, and to those who do not, it is really a time of rejuvenation.

Sketching passerbys from a picture window at Starbucks in center city. I’d forgotten how crazy people could be when given a reason. I saw someone literally lying in he gutter.

6. Cafe sketching…Tales from the Dark Side

Yes I’m still alive should anyone have wondered why I hadn’t posted for so long. I may have mentioned, I’ve always been a people watcher as long as I can remember. So it was a natural evolution to sketch people in their surroundings. Lately I’ve had more of an opportunity to draw people from life.

I only really began drawing people in their surroundings, not posing in a room full of people to draw or paint since graduating from Art Center College. I found I prefer it. Although I should say drawing from a posing model, clothed and unclothed, was a valuable ingredient in my education.

Since cafe sketching, I’ve had some interesting communication with people who were hyper aware. But mostly it’s an art of “taking a mental snapshot”, as was the case of the sketch of the intense gentleman above and the subject was none the wiser.

Taken by my daughter while doing one of my favorite things.

I want to thank friends of Allen’s Zoo as we approach the end of the year, the response to my work still amazes me. I also want to wish everyone a very happy New Year and albeit a belated Merry Christmas. The holidays arrived before I knew it.

13. A Moment of Drama

A Moment of Drama by 9567
A Moment of Drama, a photo by 9567 on Flickr.

I took this photo yesterday about prime time, meaning prime time light, what little there was. People were having family picnics on benches just in front of me. They seemed oblivious or at least uninterested in the show the sky was putting on.

Last night I woke just before midnight. I lay in bed around ten minutes before I felt a motion. I thought “Is this one of those moments I’m feeling involuntary body movement?” The movement pretty quickly became pronounced. Although not very strong it was strong enough and lasted at least a minute or two. When done I looked at the clock next to my bed. It was 11:55pm. This earthquake could be called the Halloween earthquake…unless of course we have another before then.

When I woke I remembered dreaming of a tsunami. I then remembered reading an article about dreams. A theory that the significance dreams had was a survival mechanism in a sense to warn us of danger. Guess a tsunami could happen although I don’t know if there’s a danger of a tsunami this particular time. I think I’ll avoid walking too close to the shoreline though.

I realized I haven’t posted for some time. I wanted to let people know I’m alright despite the necessity of my energy being directed to less than positive things.

Anyway above is a moment I was able to get away and do what I love to do.

15. Moby Dick

Surreal by 9567
Surreal, a photo by 9567 on Flickr.

Taken during my morning walk.

Yesterday I had 50 minutes to kill so I went to the nearest beach. I looked out to the ocean and saw a whale leaping out of the ocean, blowing it’s spout, flipping it’s tail and flippers alternately. It’s flipper was nearly all white, brought to mind Moby Dick. I noticed people had gathered on balconies and at the far end of the pier to watch. Someone who’d been watching too stopped to talk to me. He said he’s been living here all his life and had never seen one so close before.

16. Sketchbook: More Scenes From a Library

This page from my sketchbook has a cute story behind it. While I was at the library they happened to be having a children’s show. I thought it a perfect time to sketch children. As I sketched the boy his mother who was walking around the crowd of children noticed I sketched him. She went over to him and discreetly told him. A short while later he walked by me and took a quick glance. All very discreet.

17. Big Sky Country and Beautiful Blogger Award Nomination

This photograph taken some time ago I felt deserved a second look.

Also..I’d like to acknowledge a nomination for the Beautiful Blogger Award. I’m deeply honored by the nomination because it comes from someone who’s photography and intelligently sensitive writings about photography and art set him way above the pack. Here’s a link to Munchow’s Creative Photo Blog. It’s well worth checking out.

19. Interface

Pictured above for those of you who don’t know, the zookeeper of Allen’s Zoo exploring at one of my favorite places.

I saw something while exploring the intertidal zone today I’m not likely to see for a while again if at all. While looking at the usually seen inhabitants, (hermit crabs, sea stars) I rounded a rock and saw what I initially thought was the largest sea star I’d ever seen. It was about two and a half feet long (.7 meters). My mind making sense of something I’d never seen in the wild. Then realized then it wasn’t a sea star. It was a Pacific Octopus. I recognized the coloration from images in books I’ve used as reference. Although I know they happen around these ocean zones I didn’t know if it was still alive. It was not in water. I reached for my camera then remembered took the batteries out yesterday as they needed to be replaced. I then thought it probably wasn’t alive and waiting for the tide like the other things in the intertidal zone. It’d be sad to take a photograph of it then.

Also……Happy Mothers Day mom and all moms.

Playing with shapes, a photo by 9567 on Flickr.

As I’ve mentioned previously (on this blog) I find this kind of play helpful to me. Not only does it help me loosen up and helps me move into work that’s more expressive, less predictable. Play’s important for learning….I guess that’s generally accepted now.
