I was in town watching people and drawing in my sketchbook. I realized I needed spellcheck.

6. Quick Sketch: Green Chillies

I was supposed to post this two days ago ... but real life got in the way of finishing it up. So a quick sketch it will remain.

I had to remind myself halfway through that I'm trying to loosen up in my drawings! So the delicate structure I set up to start off with became a mass of sketchy lines instead. I'm quite pleased with the results, unfinished though it might look. Well, that's probably because it is .... not quite done. Here's the final scan and a couple of images of what I did to get there:

Drawn in my large moleskine journal with an assortment of coloured pencils. Cheers.

At the Art Sale…It’s Crowded, a photo by 9567 on Flickr.

I realized I haven’t posted for some time. I wanted to let people know I’m alright despite the necessity of my energy being directed to less than positive things.

Anyway above is a moment I was able to get away and do what I love to do.

9. Sketchbook: More Scenes From a Library

This page from my sketchbook has a cute story behind it. While I was at the library they happened to be having a children’s show. I thought it a perfect time to sketch children. As I sketched the boy his mother who was walking around the crowd of children noticed I sketched him. She went over to him and discreetly told him. A short while later he walked by me and took a quick glance. All very discreet.

12. Drawing on Imagination

Done today at a local bookstore, this a good example of what I referred to in my previous post “More People Sketches.” By taking a visual snapshot of, I guess we can use the word subject here, then applying what you already know about drawing you can draw the subject from any angle. Imagination is important. Should anyone have told you should draw a human anatomically without imagination needs to look at a doctor’s drawing to see how wrong that is.

13. More People Sketches

While considering a title for this post I remembered occasions in the past when I’d draw people in public. I’ve heard of different names for this kind of drawing people in natural settings. One is “Cafe Drawings”. Not really an appropriate name for where I draw though. The alternative is sitting in an art class with fifty or sixty other people drawing a model in a pose you may have seen a hundred times before…and they look like they’ve done it hundred times before. Although you learn it does get stale..fast.

You can only get good drawings of people in completely relaxed environments. People are different when they know their being observed. I’ve always been a people watcher and feel being a good observer is an essential ingredient to being a good artist. Something funny I recall is once I was at one of my favorite places, Huntington Gardens. I was on a bench drawing people at the entrance a few down from where tours of the garden were given. One conscientious tour person asked if I was waiting for a tour. I made the mistake of being forthcoming with her. She said “Are you telling them your drawing them?” I can only remember smiling. How would you respond to a question like that? Considering this I guess you could call this post “Surreptitious Sketching”.

14. 100 CREATIONS

I'm bringing back the "100 blah, blah fill in the blank" thing I did for "Fathers and Sons" as we slowly approach the release of "Liars and Thieves."

Basically you get to watch me draw something quickly.

Sound fun?

Of course it does.

It starts here.

15. My dog Bertha

41Berthasketch

When I get tired of uploading or creating products on my numerous online stores, I play scrabble with friends online, on facebook (if any of you would like a game just click on my FB link in the right frame and let's play, though I think it's for the whole world BUT the U.S. and Canada). This gives me ample time and opportunity to do quick sketches and just fool around with inspirational ideas. Today I pulled out an old photo of one of my dogs, Bertha (they never lie still long enough to draw live) which I liked because of its warped perspective, and decided to spin a fast sketch from it to make up for the tedious (but necessary) uploading process. Here you have it, warts and all from my moleskine sketchbook.

Do all dogs have that pathetic, sad "please love me and give me a treat" look on their faces? Mine certainly do. ALL the time. Bertha and her sister Bella have followed me all the way from Malaysia to Australia and now to France. I am stopped constantly by passers-by on our walks who wish to know what pedigree they are. I tell them with complete confidence and pride that my dogs have at least 10 different pedigrees in their blood. Pure Malaysian Street Dogs :)

I wouldn't be here in France on my own without their companionship and protection.
