3. time for a re-do...

of sorts.

i promised myself a couple of things once i had the surgery/fusion completed. 2 weeks out of surgery now and one of those things on the list was a re-do of my website and blog and things such as that. we all know self-promotion is my downfall. give me a pencil or paintbrush and i can work some magic, but the self-promo part of it all, not really my thing.

the website www.theenchantedeasel.com is under construction for the next 5 days or so. i just wanted to make some changes. i'm a big believer in always trying to better yourself (even if it's just a small change). all those small changes add up to a bigger and better nicole :)

here are some peeks at the artwork for a couple of the website pages...

4. IF: Swim

As time keeps rushing on, I'm checking in today with my ideas for the illustration friday topic "Swim".

The first design is in honor of Gertrude Ederle , first woman to swim the english channel.
The retro swim suit, and a weekend visit to the pool with my seven year old, made me think of water ballet, and the kaleidoscopic patterns the swimmers create. Something to play around with  in the future maybe?

7. What I'm Working On

I've been playing around with different black & white techniques. I did a few straight gouache pieces, but I'm really enjoying this pencil and digital combo. I like how the simplicity of the process and how the freshness of the sketching comes through.

10. Running Rabbits

Another small book illustration assignment came along, involving lots and lots of rabbits. It's super fun to draw and actually pretty challenging. It's for the wonderful writer Jeff Vandermeer. The funny thing about drawing animals is that I always start off too realistically before finding the right shapes and motion. I still have a few pages left to ink for Maddy, less than 10! And if you're waiting for a commission, please hold tight I'm working my way through this stuff.

11. Don't Sleep

Here's one that's very fitting for me right now. Is it fitting for you, too?
I actually LOVE my sleep—I feel like I can never get enough of it, sometimes... But alas, too busy right now to be too lazy about it. I get what I need and then it's off to the races. Another one of my favorite quotes sums it up: I can sleep when I'm dead.
Maybe I'll do that one next.

13. Truth

Ohmigosh... am I starting to sound didactic with all these "don't"s? Hope not.

Eek, I had such fun with this one... just thinking about holding on to whatever it is that makes you GO in life, when you're being pulled in all different directions like Silly Putty. It's not always smooth sailing but the most important thing is honesty, integrity, truth—inward and outward! :D  Hey, my journey will never end as long as I'm here, but in my time I  have definitely learned a thing or two about being a happy person... inwardly and outwardly! :D
Have a great day!

14. "besties" # 1

happy monday!

This little drawing is part of a series we'll call "besties"

Whenever I look at it now, I will remember my seven year olds recent obsession with dance.
She's especially intrigued with tap, so we did a you tube instructional video, and lots of viewings of "Singing in the Rain". Aaah, the beauty of the internet.
We also discovered Esther Williams, but that's another story....

15. "besties" # 2

I know, the bunnies again...but how could I resist?

ink and pencil on paper

They do seem to be getting along well these days. Unfortunately when I started this drawing they were supposed to be the active subjects of a science experiment (bunny behavior). I guess huddling together in a box is a kind of behavior...

I'm really liking this toned paper I've been using (buff?). I've had it for a while and I'm going to find out what it is and get some full size sheets to work on a bigger project.

19. Drawing People on the Train (Again)

March is the busiest time of year for authors and illustrators who do school events. It's all because of World Book Day on March 7th. I've already visited children in Pinner, Telford, Leamington Spa, Sheffield, Manchester and Barnsley. Next week I am part of a 5 Schools Project here in Sheffield where I'll be performing in a theatre!

Because I am hardly in the studio at all at the moment, I don't have time to tell you about the specifics of what I've been up to, but anyone who reads this blog at all regularly, will know the kind of thing I get up to

They will also know that all this travelling around has of course generated more train sketches

I love showing them to you - it's so much better than just closing them up in my sketchbook and storing them, unseen, on a shelf in the studio. Since I've been on the move, John has been back at base-camp, scanning them in for me.

Mostly I am still using my watercolour pencils and waterbrush, though the black and white drawing is done with a 6B graphite stick, which I would recommend for it's lovely range of marks.

Having John working with me is invaluable at this time of year. If I'm not in the studio for days on end, I need someone to answer the emails, buy my train tickets, send out the invoices, tell me where I'm going next day and, most important of all, make me a nice cup of tea when I get home! Thank you John :-)

If you are interested, here are some of my hot tips for drawing people in public. There is also a short film about keeping a sketchbook on the film page of my website.
