Graphic Design: History in the Writing (1983–2011) comprises some of the most influential published texts about graphic design history. The book documents the development of the relatively young field of graphic design history from 1983 to today, underscoring the aesthetic, theoretical, political and social tensions that have underpinned it from the beginning. Included in the anthology are texts by Ellen Lupton, Robin Kinross, Massimo Vignelli, Steven Heller, Victor Margolin and many others.

Meet the one and only "Lime Chick"! It's my sister's, Salma, best friend (besides me of course!). He spreads his lemony scent when flying and has a big appetite for grapes. He can be "sour" sometimes yet delicious! :)
I realized yesterday as I was working on the tractor and plow that I really didn't have a firm grasp of the plow-thingy. I couldn't locate the photo I'd originally referenced and all I had to look at was a crude sketch in ye olde sketchbook. My drawing experience is limited when it comes to mechanical things (and not high on my list of popular subject matter). The more I worked on it, the more uncomfortable I became - I was just "wingin' it."
So, I scoured the internet for a good plow photo only to discover that good plow photos are hard to find. Who knew? I finally found something to work from - a photo of a toy model John Deere tractor and plow. Of course, it was orientation and viewpoint, but I could work with that.
This evening, my one painting mission was to solve the plow problem and, at least, get it off to a good start (or restart). After 2 1/2 hours (time really flies when I'm painting), I'm happy with the change. I feel like it is a major hurdle that I've overcome. At least I have a plow that is grounded in reality.

And now, I can move on to more "fun" stuff to paint!

MeowI wanted a quick collage for project 4 since I didn't meander down to my studio until 10:00 tonight. I had already created four other animals
(bear, duck, pig, and owl) on recycled cardboard dividers from a case of beer.
I need a better schedule if I'm going to keep this up for another 361 days! Oy!
Recycled elements: cardboard, scrap paper, ribbon remnant
This will ultimately be in watercolor, but the digital is good for figuring out colors.

Our Charlotte Bennardo & Natalie Zaman sold their BLONDE OPS, pitched as The Devil Wears Prada meets James Bond for teens, featuring a fashion magazine intern in Rome who uncovers a plot to kidnap the First Lady, to Kat Brzozowski and Peter Joseph at Thomas Dunne Books, for publication in 2014, by Natalie Fischer Lakosil at the Bradford Literary Agency (World). Congratulations Nat and Char!
Liza Royce Agency just sold two picture books written by Tori Corn. I wonder which one will be considered her debut book? Way to go, Tori!
At Simon & Schuster Children’s, Angela Zurlo has been promoted to production manager for the Books for Young Readers and Paul Wiseman imprints, effective June 1. Navah Wolfe and Julia Maguire have been promoted to associate editor, BFYR. In addition, Richard Ackoon moves up to executive coordinator, Laura Roode has been promoted to associate art director, and Krista Olsen moves up to design associate.
Today’s the last day to send in your first page inspired by Kathleen Kemly’s May’s Picture Prompt. You will find Agent Melissa Sarver critiques of four submissions on next Friday’s post. Kathleen’s art work was featured on Illustrator Saturday a few weeks ago. http://kathytemean.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/illustrator-saturday-kathleen-kemly/
Please attach your double spaced, 12 point font, 23 line first page to an e-mail and send it to kathy(dot)temean(at)gmail(dot)com. Also cut and paste it into the body of the e-mail. Put “May 26th First Page Prompt” in the subject line.
ILLUSTRATORS: Here is your chance to show off a little. I am looking any subject matter as long as it has a few flowers in the illustration. I will post some as they come in during the month, but I will definitely post all by May 31st, so I need to receive your illustrations no later than May 25th. Please make sure the illustration is at least 500 pixels wide and includes a blurb about you and a link to see more of your work. Please send it to kathy(dot)temean(at)gmail(dot)com and put “May Illustration” in the subject box.
Talk tomorrow,
Kathy

Doesn't this look great? You can check out their website to contribute to get their film made here.
I so badly wanted to write a big, three-layer-cake-with-extra-frosting Surtex 2012 post. I'm not even halfway kidding... for one thing, you know I'm capable of it (see
this or
this), for another, I've been writing it in my head since Tuesday night. But the truth is, I just honestly don't have the time to. I've got too much work to do. And, believe me, I know all too well how to, um,
accidentally spend 3 hours composing a blog post.
So, I've got a few pictures instead.
Above: my 2012 hall-mates, Phil and Kate from
Smay Design. So glad I met them this year!
Here are my neighbors (2011 and 2012) Breanne and Jeremy of
Brejer. Great neighbors, great peeps, and great art too!
I have a few more pics from neighbors, but I'm waiting on clearance to post them.
So while I'm waiting...
I'll just post more photos of
me in my booth ! :D :D
Most (if not all) of these were taken by Stacie of
thethreesweetpeas.com. She was working with Emily Taylor of
Emily Taylor Design, across from me. They are both so sweet and were so kind and helpful- great neighbors (I've been lucky!) and their booth looked great.

I am so delighted to finally work with an author/musician. It made the trailer so fun! Yes, it is clear I watched way to many Warner Brothers cartoons as a kid...
I love this book; I hope people who read it enjoy it as much as I enjoyed illustrating it! (Out in Fall, 2012)

Here are some birds I did from book paper, acrylic and paper. They are a lot of fun and I always enjoy doing them...time to clean off the desk and get busy on something new.
I will have these for sale at White Linen Night in the Heights in August. It's been awhile since Ive attended so I am happy to see all the artists again.
Not to be confused with Dreamworks’ Madagascar…
…actually, the makers of Life’s A Jungle are desperately trying to trick consumers to pick up this low budget travesty. People say the DVD market is dying – if it puts an end to crap like this I’m all for it. And if you think the box art is bad… wait’ll you check out the trailer:

Buz-e-Chini is being hailed in the news story above as being the first computer-animated short in Hazaragi, the language of the Hazara people, who are the third largest ethnic group in Afghanistan. The director, Abbas Ali, was born in Afghanistan, but fled the country when the Taliban took over and studied animation in Pakistan. The film appears to have been produced mostly in Pakistan since the production company is Karachi-based Post Amazers. Also, in the news piece above, the director indicates that he started production on the film while he was still living in Pakistan.
The entire film can be viewed below. It’s an impressive production based on a Hazara folk tale. The film is dedicated to Hussain Ali Yousafi, the voice of the wolf, who was assassinated in 2009. No one said making animated films in Afghanistan would be easy.
