Brooklyn-based animator and bona fide biker chick Lori Samsel made this cute animated piece entirely out of Japanese rice crackers. I think I’m most impressed that she managed to animate the film before eating all of the crackers. Those things are yummy!
Congratulations Julie! My wife Julie had her graduation ceremony today in hogwartsesque University of Toronto. I've never seen anyone work so hard and she more then deserves this degree. she's going to be an excellent teacher.
In other news I've taken a part time job to carry us through the next while as Julie has no income, a few shifts a week at an art supply store.

That is marvelous! It is admirable and not an easy to acquire a degree while caring for a family. Well done.
(I returned to college and completed my degree when I was in my late 40s...it's never too late, and the education is always worth the work and sacrifice.)
It's been a few weeks since I also became known as "Sofia's Dad", but being a father of a baby-girl is already showing it's influence on my work... "Fun Fun Fun" is part of my Bird-Bikes Series and features a lot of, shall we say, "girlie" colors...

"Picture-book shelves overflow with stories of furious young kids who protest injustice by packing up their essentials (snacks, stuffed animals) and running away, often making it only as far as the backyard before setting up camp. In his debut picture book, Cadow borrows familiar elements, but what feels fresh here is the child’s reason for leaving. Instead of sibling rivalry or the struggle to be heard, it’s young Alfie’s frustration and sorrow over his own growing up that sends him out the door. After his mother tells Alfie to part with a favorite pair of outgrown sneakers, he explodes, announces his departure plans, and assembles his supplies. His gentle, understanding mother helps and even tucks an imaginary hug into his bag. Alone in the backyard, Alfie slowly accepts that his shoes need to go, and in a warm conclusion, finds a new home for them. Young children will easily recognize Alfie’s frustrated feelings of powerlessness, as well as his fears of independence. Castillo’s expressive illustrations sensitively reinforce this tender, reassuring story’s elemental emotions." — Gillian Engberg
"Alfie already has a significant list of grievances-taking baths, making his bed, eating potatoes-so when his mother wants to give away his favorite shoes just because they've gotten a little small, Alfie decides he's had enough. The headstrong emotions of a young runaway are humorously portrayed in the dialogue ("'May I give you a hug?' asked his mother. 'You may let me keep my shoes,' said Alfie") and in the art (Alfie's dignified expression as his mother helps him pack a bag). At his clever mother's suggestion, Alfie takes a lot of supplies; he can't get far with his heavy pack, and, after unloading everything in the backyard, takes off his favorite, too-tight shoes and puts them on his stuffed animal companion, Buddy Bear. With perfect timing-Alfie is just starting to feel homesick-his mom comes out with the welcome-home hug he is looking for. The subdued colors in Castillo's old-fashioned yet unsentimental illustrations highlight the red

This is Beauty from my character series. Beauty has reminders about self esteem.
Beauty says, “If you are feeling invisible to the world, sure enough, it’s a warning. You are beginning to leave yourself and becoming invisible and unimportant to you.”
And announcement, if you have been trying to access my Ronniannhall.com site, you will now be, finally, redirected to my new website, Fairyonlineschool.com. Bob “BobServo” Mackey, who parodied Cartoon Brew three years ago, is at it again. His latest comical stab at the Brew includes post titles like “50 Years of Turkmenistanimation” and “Cartoon Network? More Like FARToon NOTwork.” He sounds like a good candidate if we ever need a third Brewer! Check out Bob’s new Cartoon Brew parody at SomethingAwful.com.

I was recenlty turned on to this very unique new site called Scampd, devoted to the art of Advertising Illustration and Design. It’s always nice to see a new site that focuses on a specific corner of the industry, and I’m excited to see this one grow.
Here’s a little more about Scampd in their own words:
“Named after the humble Scamp, a rough sketch sometimes supplied at the start of an illustration assignment, Scampd exists to celebrate the rich, diverse, and criminally underused art of illustration in advertising and design. We’ve just started publishing content, and are currently calling for submissions. To sweeten the deal to potential contributors, we are giving away copies of the Brushes Mobile Drawing app to the first 50 accepted submissions.” – Bonnie Mooney

Roberta this is fantastic! What a great promo to send out.
Good luck.
Lisa
I just stumbled upon this iphone app that contains a checklist you can bring to senior year critiques / design degree shows. I have to admit it’s a little cruel, but hopefully you’ll get a good chuckle along the way.
I was in need to restock my business cards when I found a great deal at overnight prints (sign up for their email list, they are great about having sales). I decided to quickly convert an old 2-sided design I had for last year's Surtex show and make it into a more general business card.
I put it up on twitter and unexpectedly got great response, so I thought I would put it up here as well. Stay tuned for more promo-related posts here very soon.

Hi Jannie, I just started a flickr group called "Illustrator & Designer Marketing Materials" http://www.flickr.com/groups/idmm/. I want to get a pool going of everyone's great marketing material. I'm trying to make my first mailer, but I'm at a loss for what works and what doesn't, and if I'm struggling, I'm sure others out there are as well. Could you put some of your stuff on there? I especially love your coupon one! Thanks!
I have no idea who linked me to this generous lady's blog, but I was the lucky recipient of this wonderful cut-paper bird giveaway! I had totally forgotten I had entered. I just love it and will frame it for the guest bedroom. Thank you Norma!
Many of you know I had the pleasure of stopping by Mim's house last Sunday.
The meeting was short but sweet, each of us having to dash off in different directions.
It was so wonderful to see her beautiful home and the wonderful spaces and places she has to create her amazing art. And I saw original Miss Ems!! It really is something being in another artists space, especially if it's one you adore ;)♥
On my way out she handed me a gift wrapped in the most luscious, colorful textured paper. She said it was for my birthday "whenever it is!" Too funny.
I handed her lilies from my yard which looked pretty sad by the time I got there :P
Anyway...This is what I saw in the box! A handmade paper bowl

Good things Lolo!!! I *stay* blonde.....it is a helpful item especially when having to deal with men or police. HAte to admit that....I just give them the blank look and smile. :D Well, sometimes it doesn't work! Love that bowl with the nest!
How I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mim's gifts to you.....they perfectly reflect YOU! That bowl - with the colours (yes, I see them) and the STAR*S.... look like they were meant to live at "Chateau Lolo". And, you know me well enough now to see how I adore the bird's nest and egg...
Your bird-prize winner is such a happy sight! (And I ♥ the musical score background!)
Anyway, even if you aren't adept with GPS...(and you are talking to a "Blondie" who has not driven a car in two years)....you are one awesome redhead - who has a lot to be thankful for!
Oh lucky for winning the bird, I love the songbird effect. And luck(ier) you to meet up with Mim.I adore the page she did for my Girlfriend's Traveling sketchbook. Very talented. (I'm having bowl envy) I named our GPS thang CarLOTTA,,but I'll swear this eternal strawberry blonde does best with Mapquest. Happy, happy, unbirthday!
I love that bowl too and that nest! And the cards are beautiful. I am going to have to start stalking Mim, I can tell, the only reason I haven't already is lack of more time! By the way my blog misses you :-). xoxo P.S. And that bird up top is pretty wonderful too.
sounds like a great visit. wonderful bowl and nest gifts. I used to make a lot of similar bowls. I wonder where they all are now? I think I need to get this GPS to help me out myself.
the Sisterhood is allowing blonde jokes this one time. otherwise the fines will include penalties not yet determined.
hahaha! i'm acting like i'm the boss of your blog!
i want to be more blond. every hair dresser i go to, i say 'i want light hair. i don't want dark brown hair.' and i always get dark brown. i don't know why... :)
you get more gifts than anyone else i know and with good reason :)
How wonderful, Laurel, that the bowl found its way into your hands. And the bird on the music had me sighing with pleasure.
As I sit here on the first evening of my retirement, I realize I must start writing a list of things to make a part of my life again. Papermaking is one of them.
Such a tenderly sweet post. I'm delighted to know bloggers actually take time to meet. I will try that some time. The bowl is lovely - I'm smitten by it :]
Oh my what exquisite gorgeous things you got there! So nice it must have been to see Mim! And yes those bowls!!!!! Indeed lovely. Lucky you! I am packed to go again , just a little nap before I go as I have a long day and night ahead of me..... We keep in touch in BKK. Hope you are having a nice time with Stella!
It is a beautiful bowl and wonderful gift. I'm so jealous that some of my blogger friends actually get to see each other in person! The bird on music paper is unique also. I really like that!
Finishing up the last pictures for a book by poet and author, Connie Arnold. Fun, creative story about the sound each creature makes. ANIMAL SOUNDS MIX-UP will be due out later this fall. I'll keep you posted.

1. No, you wouldn't write a novel if you just had the time. If you're not writing one anyway, let's face it, you're probably not going to do it. 2. Almost no writers are "famous authors." I am, believe me, NOT a "famous author." 3. We all don't KNOW the famous authors, either. I don't have Stephen King's phone number, but he can have my email address if he'd like it. 4. Our main characters are NOT all based on us. And no, my books aren't set in my hometown, or any real town. No, they're not. No, not even that one. 5. We don't just sit around all day waiting for inspiration. Who has the time? We have to figure out new ways to get you to buy our PREVIOUS inspirations. 6. Mystery writers really couldn't solve crimes. I don't care what they do on CASTLE. 7. We don't type "THE END" on a piece of paper in a typewriter anymore. Haven't for decades. 8. We don't all drink. I, for example, have a beer about every two months. SOME of us drink, and not that often to excess. It sure as hell isn't part of the creative process. 9. Mystery writers don't ALWAYS "kill off" people we don't really like. Okay, maybe we do. But not ALL the time. 10. No, it's not a good idea to set a mystery novel at a mystery writing convention, and no, you didn't just think of that yourself. EVERYBODY has thought of that. 11. Many of us, believe it or not, DON'T have classical music playing whenever we're working. 12. There are a couple of us who have developed at least rudimentary social skills. 13. We have no control over the covers on our books. None. We're consulted once in a while, and then the publisher does what they want. (Personally, I'm thrilled with the cover of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEED, but I still didn't have anything to do with its design). 14. Sometimes, we don't even write our own titles. 15. Writing is NOT fun. HAVING WRITTEN, on the other hand, is a blast. I recommend it highly.
Hey Diana
Lovely and scrumptiuos!
