1. Heart Flight

HeartsFlyg
Heart Flight, small format art (11-1/2" x 8-1/2"), watercolor on handmade paper. This image is part of my ongoing series of heart drawings, exploring the heart shape as an artistic symbol.
The heart has wonderlust and wanderlust
it is simple in its needs
yet bold in what it captures and surrenders
More of my artwork can be seen on my website and my Etsy shop

5. An Alligators Valentine

This is a promotional piece I did for Valentines Day a year ago. Having moved to Florida a couple years ago and seeing many alligators, I was inspired. The art was done with acrylic inks and gouache.

7. the wistful ones

my latest painting, entitled "the wistful ones" is now FOR SALE as a REPRODUCTION in my shop.

the second painting in my *new* style. had planned on having this done a couple of weeks ago, in time for valentine's day, but mother nature and some winter storms had other plans (power outages and no heat mean no painting). but, better late than never.

besides, who could turn down a sweet little baby polar bear with such a "wistful" look of love in his eyes...? ;)

8. Happy Valentine’s Day y’all!

valentine bunny cupid450

Little known fact: The Easter Bunny moonlights, filling in for Cupid, to get some extra scratch.

He says, “They don’t call me Dead-Eye Cottontail for nothing!
(Actually, they don’t really call him that, shhhhhh.)

9. It's All in What You See

Remember this heart on the underside of my ice cream lid? (Some of you saw it as a squirrel or a rabbit on the move.)
Here's a sideways heart in an unexpected place.

12. HEART GLASS RING – Two Hearts in Love, With Strings Attached

GLASS HEART RING – Evil Bunny Loves Anatomical Heart Pink Ring

HEART GLASS RING - Two Hearts in Love, With Strings Attached
Two Hearts in Love, With Strings Attached GLASS HEART RING can have so many meanings.
Love can be a wonderful thing but sometimes it can also take you on a roller coaster ride.
. Here is to a slightly more morbid Valentines day… It symbolizes love and attachment, but can also be interpreted in many different ways. Two human hearts attached by strings, or veins.

The glass ring is 1 1/4″ tall by 1 1/4″ wide.

The ring band is silver and it’s attached firmly to the base of the glass pendant. It’s sturdy, waterproof, adjustable and can fit on small to medium sized fingers.

15. This may all be a dream...

The signature sheets for 'Barbed Wire Hearts' (Delirium Books, Nov 2011) arrived today, and the signature sheets for 'Nowhere Hall' (Spectral Press, any day now) should arrive tomorrow. I've pinched myself a dozen times. I'm sure it's a misprint or I'm trapped in a dream or some other such nonsense. This isn't real life.

In other news. Two more reviews of Nowhere Hall have appeared on the web...

Brilliant! I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like this before. It is original, thought provoking, and makes me crave her upcoming Delirium Books release... It is a layered and tightly woven chapbook that has more depth than many novellas I've read this year. You can read the full review by Jassen Bailey at The Crow's Caw.

Nowhere Hall struck me as a very intimate tale. The writer exposes Ron's emotional core, his inner most thoughts and feelings are laid bare...Spectral Press has delivered another classic tale. You can read the full review by Pablo Cheescake  at The Eloquent Page.

Thank you to both Jassen and Pablo for reading my wee story.

My short story 'His Name Carved on Empty Space' was due to be published at Every Day Fiction today but the site is moving servers so the story will (I believe) now be appearing in September, which is probably a good thing as I don't think I can take any more awesomeness today. Heck, I even got a free smellies set in work today.

Seriously, pinch me.

17. Chapter Book Illustrations are GO!!

Yes sir, this week I signed a new contract with Kane and Miller in CA. Very happy ... can't tell y'all what the book is about yet as it is under big wraps ... and there is a possibility it will be a series. So double Yippee!!

I will be a busy illustrator in the next few months with this and 'Hidden New Jersey' for Charlesbridge.

I love to be busy... the busier I am the more I want to do! It's when it is quiet and slow that I start procrastinating, and cleaning underneath the control switches on the gas stove. There is nothing like a deadline to get the creative juices a flowing.

Also working on some sketches for a book about a rather cheeky Grandmother for Judy Bradley in Savannah, GA ... here is my first thoughts on her ...this will be a fun project!

Last week I met up with my crit group 'Revisionists'. We haven't met for a couple of months with Christmas etc, so it was good to catch up and see what everyone was working on and compare notes.

Here in Maine we are about to have a heatwave. 40F this week they say .. WOWSER! T-shirt weather.

Me and 'im indoors celebrated our 10th year of wedded bliss, so we had a joint celebration last night with Valentine's Day, and ate FAR TOO MUCH at the Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse in Bangor. Which has talking Moose heads. And good steak. From cows, not moose.

Well that's the news from The Wacky Brit, I must away back to work ... the intray is looking somewhat fearsome.

Happy Heart Day to you all!

Nothing new, alas, this week on the bedside table.

21. Animal Wednesday: Three's a charm-er

I've been busy with this little project today and I feel like I'm in the zone.
As I drew this sweet mutt, I noticed I was making his nose and markings look like hearts, so that's how I decided what to write above his head.
I actually can't stand this cutesy saying, but I think it fits him to a tee.
Besides, I really, really ♥ him ;)

22. Spoonflower Samples

diamonds-samples

I got some Spoonflower samples today!  Always exciting.  When I discovered they now offered cotton lawn I had to come up with some designs to test it out. (Lawn was the first thing I requested back when I first signed up with them.)  The samples you see above are all printed on lawn.  The colors came out mostly as expected which is nice.  Can you see the old-timey circus/Alice influence?

The fabric itself is a looser weave than I was expecting; maybe it will shrink up a bit in the wash.  My idea was to construct a wee 1930s dress for myself from Spoonflower lawn.  And, I suppose, some dolly dresses too.  What do you think?

strongman-sample

I printed the strongman design on canvas.  I really like the canvas. (I wasn’t expecting to as I haven’t had much use for it; perhaps that will change!)  There were other strongman versions on quilt-weight fabric but I don’t like them as such.  Somehow the details didn’t show up as well. (Plus the scale was smaller so the little guys just seem sort of lost.)  I think this design would need something a little more if it were ever to be printed, some kind of design element in the background.

The diamond/star design is printed on their standard quilt-weight fabric in a slightly different colorway from the same design above it.  I like the softer, more greenish version in the lawn. (Although the bright red, blue and white is appropriate for our holiday weekend!)

Have you printed up anything at Spoonflower lately?

Anyhow, I wish all my fellow U.S. residents, citizens and ex-pats a Happy July 4th weekend!   Actually, a lovely weekend to everyone!

24. Fourteen on the 14th

KJ put out the sweetest challenge the other day when she walked around her house taking pictures of things with hearts. She asked us to do the same thing, promising we'd be amazed at how many we have! During my little stroll around the abode I noticed I also have a couple of "Love" items that are important to me so I've included them as well. Ready? Let's go for a walk.

Every day I wake up to my wonderful birth mandala made by my dear friend Marianne in the Netherlands.
This has 33 hearts of gold on it!
This is the sign on my studio door. No grumpy people are allowed in there. Only positive energy!

Still in my studio, I walk over to my memo board and zoom in on a card from my dear 75 year old second cousin whom I've never met. We've been writing for 10 years!
The wonderful raven ATC is from Marianne. Her presence is everywhere :)
Next up is a valentine present I bought for myself on Etsy. I just wish he came with my initial!
The people made a mistake and sent me another one but they told me to keep it and enjoy it when I offered to send it back.

25. love letters to your library

anytime I need a book
photo from Contra Costa Library, thanks!

I got an email that ALA’s @yourlibrary site had redesigned and I went over there but found it’s the same old clutter of information. It is possible I’m getting curmudgeonly. I also got an email from former co-Councilor Heidi Dolamore who is working on an advocacy project that I like much more: the Pinole Library valentine campaign. The Pinole Library’s website is here. You can see that the library is open 24 hours a week over four days. They’re starting a campaign to show how much people support the library by having people write notes on these valentines.
