1. How to Choose a Diamond

Amazing and flawless diamonds in Los Angeles are a rare find if you do not know where the upper crust lingers. Diamond & Estate Trust is a private and secure place to sell or purchase diamonds and other rare jewels. Now, finding diamonds in Los Angeles is a breeze, and the affordability of these precious jewels is remarkable too.

Purchasing diamonds in Los Angeles through Diamond & Estate Trust is a safe and private experience. You are treated fairly, and only the most experiences jeweler’s will be on staff to help you throughout the process. After all, truly knowing how to choose a diamond is an art.

A lot goes into knowing the true quality of a diamond or any other precious gem. You have to keep the four C’s in mind: carat, color, cut and clarity. Don’t cut corners.

Consider the budget and purchase the highest cut quality that it will allow. Your jeweler will be able to walk you through the charts if you would like to see them, and they can also explain the clarity and grade of the diamonds that you are considering.

You may want to look at the first diamond with more than the naked eye. There are 10X magnifying glasses available in most jewelers’ locations, and these will show the flaws in the stone. You do not want a stone with a visible flaw to the naked eye.

There are also color options like D grade, ice white and fine white just to name some. You will have a professional to walk you through these differences as well as they are significant to the price of the stones that are being considered. You will also want to inquire about the fluorescence of the diamond. If it is oily or milky looking under UV lights it could reduce the value of the stone considerably.

Carat is one of the important aspects of  picking diamonds in Los Angeles. That is after all what the “good stuff” is measured by! The more carats there are the more money you are going to spend. While it is seemingly the underlying basis of value it should be the last thing considered. It is the “stone quality” that you need to confirm first.

So, have a budget in mind when you come in. Do a little bit of research on diamond quality and pricing. Leave the rest to the jeweler’s that are trained to help you make the best decision. They can even offer advice on popular cuts for different occasions.
Don’t take chances with your privacy or security, and always go with people that you know that you can trust.

Never shop online with a company that you have never heard of. You want to see, feel and compare the stones before making the investment, and diamonds are investments.
Diamond & Estate Trust is located at the Pershing Square Building at 448 S Hill St, Suite 415 in LA, CA. You can easily contact them by calling 213.622.9700 or 213.622.9711.

2. On My Mind by, Sara Megibow (Agent) ~ from Newsletter Article

(This is an article from Nelson Agency - Permission was granted to me to repost by Sara Megibow)

On My Mind by Sara Megibow
My son is seven years old, and he’s short. I’m short, my husband is short. No big surprise there, right? Last month the kid and I were in line for ski passes. For those of you who don’t ski, please know that ski passes are not cheap. They range from $80 to $150 per day per skier. But we like to ski, so we budget for it. At the cash register, the total was much lower than I expected so I said, “That’s two regular-priced tickets, please, not one.” Cashier said, “Oh, I thought your son was five. He would have been free at five.” The woman in line behind me said (loudly), “Why on earth did you say anything? You should have taken the free ticket.” And all I could think to say was, “Because I don’t want to teach my son that honesty is only for rich people.” So, I paid full price, and my son was there to learn the lesson.Honesty.
When an author has a book for sale, one of our goals is to sell that book for money. Most authors will make a little money, some will make more money, and a verrrrrry few will make a lot of money. Regardless, in publishing, one goal is to bring in money. (Another goal is high artistic integrity, but more on that in another post.)
When readers pirate books for free, they are not paying the authors for those works. Those authors earn nothing for all their hard work. Now, I get that it's tempting to get a free book. And I also know that an author is popular if he/she is being regularly pirated. Pirated books can and probably do spread the word to legitimate book buyers. But that should not be the rationale.
Don’t take music files without paying for them. Don’t post pictures on your website that you don’t own. Don’t sneak into a movie without paying for it. Don’t lie to get cheaper ski passes. Be honest.
Sincerely,
Sara
What's Hot by Sara Megibow
I spent a week in NYC this month. Mostly I was enjoying New York ComicCon and geeking out with 119,000 other comic-book fans. But I did manage to do some work between getting autographs and being a fan girl. What’s hot in the world of adult science fiction and fantasy right now?
Based on meetings I had at ComicCon:
  • The mash-up! Science fiction with steampunk, fantasy set in an historical time period with vampires, space opera with magic wands and prophecies. This is one reason Michael Martinez is getting such amazing advance publicity for THE DAEDALUS INCIDENT, his debut science fiction mash-up scheduled for early 2013.
  • Commercial, fun, high-action science fiction. Think spaceships, aliens, battles, cool gadgets--the works.
  • Epic fantasy with a unique story. A story bigger than “adventurers on an epic journey to find the magic object that will save the world.” Betsy Dornbusch has an epic fantasy called EXILE (Feb 2013) set in a totally unique world. This is what’s hot.

3. Is the Election Driving You Crazy too?

I don't know about you, but this election is driving me insane.

I can't recall when I got so hung up over the media attacking this and that one, and I hate that it is pulling negative feelings out of me. I found myself caught up in moments where I made comments on other peoples posts, then I posts news articles, and then regretted my choice of words. This is not good. When this happens, it's time for me to take a step back, and put my focus elsewhere.

I'm normally pretty calm, collected, and not too verbal (most of the time), so I think what I'm going to do for right now is stay off of FB and Twitter for the next few weeks. I don't like getting this stressed over politics. I just want a better country like everyone else.

I'm almost done with my novella, Mixed Magic, so I'll bury myself in that until I"m done, and I'll see you after the election is over.

Now go vote!

p.s. Here is a picture I based my character, Rayne Morgeaux on, she is in the first witch book, but her story is actually the 2nd book, Bare Bones. (the picture is Kate Beckinsale with blonde hair.)

Happy reading everyone,
Dawn

6. Cover Questionnaire (Check!)

Who would have thought filling out a Cover Questionnaire would be so darn hard. I scrolled through tons of pictures on several photo sites.

I couldn't find my hero and heroine anywhere. Finally, I found this website (Deviantart.com) that had some really interesting pictures, and their they (my Holly and Drake) were. Only thing I didn't like were the tattoo's and flowers. Don't get me wrong, tattoo's are fine, just not on Holly Charleston. This is the couple (picture) I want, I'm not saying this is the picture the publisher will get, but a girl can hope right?

After finding a beach photo and diamond photo, I also had to write a 25 word blurb, a 50 word blurb, and a 150 word blurb. You think this is easy? Not. The 25 word was the hardest, but I did it.

Anyway, let me know what you think of this couple. Do you think they will make a sexy book cover? (minus the flowers and tats)

7. Yay! A book offer for DIAMONDS!

I already spread the wonderful news on FB and Twitter, but I haven't shared it here yet.

Anyway, I got an offer for DIAMONDS, a contemporary erotic romance story set in Destiny, Florida. DIAMONDS is the first novella in a 3 book series. The series is called, The Stiletto Millionaire Club.

What's that? Well, it's about 3 women (actually 4 best friends) who are very financially secure. (for now) But why would anyone want to read about rich women you ask? Because they have loads of problems just like everyone else. Problems that money can't fix, and they deserve to find out like the rest of us that money can't buy love. All these ladies want is true love, and a strong man who will stand up for them if needed. It doesn't matter if he's the guy cutting their grass or the UPS delivery guy, or a sexy masked thief. (hint hint) As long as his heart is in the right place, magic will happen. (not they paranormal kind of magic. The magic of love.) If you want paranormal magic, read NOT AN ANGEL.

DIAMONDS, is scheduled for release around Jan. 2012, but I have a feeling with the holidays, it might be closer to Feb. 2012, but who knows. Siren might be the publisher to get er' done quick.

I hope readers will enjoy DIAMONDS, Book #1 in The Stiletto Millionaire Club Series. I had soooo much fun writing it.

Thanks for stopping by,
Dawn

8. Spoonflower Samples

diamonds-samples

I got some Spoonflower samples today!  Always exciting.  When I discovered they now offered cotton lawn I had to come up with some designs to test it out. (Lawn was the first thing I requested back when I first signed up with them.)  The samples you see above are all printed on lawn.  The colors came out mostly as expected which is nice.  Can you see the old-timey circus/Alice influence?

The fabric itself is a looser weave than I was expecting; maybe it will shrink up a bit in the wash.  My idea was to construct a wee 1930s dress for myself from Spoonflower lawn.  And, I suppose, some dolly dresses too.  What do you think?

strongman-sample

I printed the strongman design on canvas.  I really like the canvas. (I wasn’t expecting to as I haven’t had much use for it; perhaps that will change!)  There were other strongman versions on quilt-weight fabric but I don’t like them as such.  Somehow the details didn’t show up as well. (Plus the scale was smaller so the little guys just seem sort of lost.)  I think this design would need something a little more if it were ever to be printed, some kind of design element in the background.

The diamond/star design is printed on their standard quilt-weight fabric in a slightly different colorway from the same design above it.  I like the softer, more greenish version in the lawn. (Although the bright red, blue and white is appropriate for our holiday weekend!)

Have you printed up anything at Spoonflower lately?

Anyhow, I wish all my fellow U.S. residents, citizens and ex-pats a Happy July 4th weekend!   Actually, a lovely weekend to everyone!

10. Q & A with FLAWLESS author Scott Selby

I’m honored to have author Scott Selby answer a few questions about his fabulous new book, FLAWLESS, which investigates one of the greatest jewel heist in history. For more on the book and its authors,  visit the book’s website

1. Your background as a scholar is impressive. (Scott is a graduate of UC Berkeley, Harvard Law School, and Sweden’s Land University, where he wrote his master’s thesis on diamonds.)  Can you elaborate on how your studies inspired and/or influenced FLAWLESS?

Thanks.  From law school, I learned about the importance of research. I worked as a research assistant in college as well as law school so that helped tremendously.  I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to go to such great schools.  My masters thesis in particular enabled me to study the diamond industry which was tremendously helpful in writing Flawless.

2. In tackling a book on the heist, what was your plan of action? In your investigation of the facts, which avenues did you pursue first?
The first thing was to write everyone who knew anything at all about the Antwerp Diamond Heist. Next, we tracked down each additional source of information that we could be it a document, court case, blue print, or person.

3. What aspect of the project do you find most irresistible or intriguing?
I loved the mysteries at the heart of the story. My co-author Greg Campbell and I had to work hard to dig up as much as we could to try to solve such mysteries and in the process we ended up finding out that things that originally looked straight forward were anything but.  For example, the more we found out about the combination dial on the vault door, the more of a mystery it became. The manufacturer and the locksmith who worked with it both explained in detail why it would be virtually impossible to film the combination being entered.  Before we did this research, we had believed like many others that it could have just been recorded surreptitiously.

4. The book does an excellent job of putting the reader in Leonardo Notarbartolo’s point of view. How were you able to grapple with such a difficult task, considering his reluctance to discuss the unadorned facts of the case?
My co-author Greg was able to meet with him face-to-face in a Belgian prison.  Unfortunately, Mr. Notarbartolo was not willing to discuss specifics without being paid, which we were not willing to do. He was however kind enough to permit one of his closest friends to accompany us during our research in Turin.

5. What tools for non-fiction writing do you find most helpful? Are there any resources you turn to again and again in your own writing?
I think the most important thing is to do your research and then once you have written something, continue to edit it over and over again. Greg and I, along with our editor at Sterling Iris Blasi, revised our book countless times.  The main resource I’d say are my friends who have been kind enough to read my work and give me much needed feedback. The track changes function on MS Word is a lifesaver.

6. Do you have any advice for writers (non-fiction or otherwise)interested in creating a flawless (or perhaps a less flawed) narrative?

Buy a few of the more popular books on how to write a proposal and how to write generally. Think about what you admire in others writing. And keep working on your own projects as long as it takes. If one book doesn’t work out,

11. Flawless

Thank goodness @IrisBlasi sent me this book.

I’m devouring Flawless, Union Square Press’ sparkling new non-fiction title. Within the pages, authors Scott Andrew Selby and Greg Campbell (Blood Diamonds) detail the events surrounding the greatest diamond heist is history.

Half billion dollars in gems boosted from an impenetrable underground vault within Antwerp’s locked down diamond district?

Oh yeah, Scarlet Whisper is all over this one.

What kind of Librarian/Rock Star/International Jewel Thief would I be if I didn’t do my homework on this dazzling book?

A rich veneer of history overlays the narrative. With focus and clarity, Flawless examines not only the oft politicized roots of diamond industry but also the origins of the gems themselves. As the world’s most liquid commodity, for centuries these  jewels have been mined and funneled into the pockets of tycoons and tyrants alike.

Millions of dollars worth of karats are passed from hand to hand…and it all happens in Belgium, baby.  Antwerp rose to prominence over a century to become the center of world diamond trade. The book thoroughly explores the dichotomy between Antwerp’s moneyed diamond district and the surrounding tourist infested treets before transporting the reader to the backrooms and back alleys of Turin, Italy,a haven for mystics and thieves.

While the locales are in intriguing enough by themselves, the criminal masterminds responsible for the heist hijack the reader’s attention. Leonardo Notarbartolo and his gang of theives are anything but the usual suspects; the “School of Turin” makes Danny Ocean’s crew look like small time crooks.

Flawless outshines most of the historical capers I’ve seen on the shelves. You’ll want to snag a copy. The execution of the premise is THAT good. Even though the loot has never been recovered, you’ll enjoy slipping into the shadows to follow the footsteps of the suspects.

Hungry for more? Then try these luscious lemon bars. While they aren’t sprinkled with diamond dust, the recipe is worth stealing.

Binge!
