2326. Peeping Covers

Well, would you look at this! How about a peep at the covers for the two new books that I illustrated for Chronicle Books to be released next May 2012? Yes, you read that right - not one, but TWO new books:

New York, Baby!
NEW YORK, BABY!

San Francisco, Baby!
SAN FRANCISCO, BABY!

This is the start of a fun series aimed at the traveling baby and/or toddler - a way of looking at each of these iconic cities through their eyes. I had such a fun time working on these books! Hope you can see my enthusiasm through my artwork.

Check out the first mention of the books by Elizabeth Bird of A Fuse #8 Production on the SLJ blog the other day: Librarian Preview: Chronicle Books (Spring/Summer 2012)

Yay!

2327. A little bit of Tintinism :)

:: My recent entry for Kelir, this month topic is about 'Tintin' :) just click the picture to see it bigger
and Djamboel means 'top knot' in Indonesia..

There's a little bit euphoria about 'Tintin' in my house recently, I've been a fans of  Herge since I'm in elementary school, my dad was a huge fans of Tintin too, there's always a quarrel between us, there's 6 of us, about who's gonna read it first...

Now it is a little bit melancholic for me, it's more than an ordinary piece of a comic book, the way it make my daughter laugh, the way it 'still' and 'used to' make me laugh, there's something classical inside it..

and I'm glad the movies captured my expectation of the character quite well, but still, I love the books more :)

2328. Studio Visit with Lydia Monks

Thursday morning was my last bit of university teaching before Christmas, so while I was in town, I thought I would drop in on my good friend, fellow picture-book-person Lydia MonksI'm sure you all know her gorgeous work: she both creates her own award-winning books and also illustrates the work of other authors, including Julia Donaldson

We have been friends for years, but Lydia has very recently moved into a snazzy, new studio-space that I had not yet seen, so I was of course dead curious for a peek. I left John doing my accounts, leapt on the trusty no. 22 bus and did my couple of hours at Sheffield Hallam, then walked down the road to Lydia's new place. Gorgeous isn't it? She has tons of space and a huge window with a great view out over Sheffield:

But, can you guess who bunked off his duties and arranged with Lydia to meet me there? Honestly, I think an official, warning is imminent. Or maybe a pay cut...

After our tour-of-inspection, the three of us went out for lunch and a chin-wag. Lovely. We even treated ourselves to cake.

2332. Lately Lily is the creative collaboration between illustrator...

Lately Lily is the creative collaboration between illustrator Micah Player and apparel designer Erin Nichols. Using the interesting set up featuring Lily, a fictional traveling daughter of a photographer and writer for “the world’s greatest magazine,” the site provides young girls a chance to view the world through her eyes. You get to see where she is currently, check out her traveling notebook, help her pack her suitcase, and be able to buy tee shirts featuring Lily’s striking visage. Bold colors, broad strokes, colorful design make this a fantastic site to visit for young ones. Or, for people like me, who happen to love great illustration.

2334. Give me sugar!

Hiya - My name is Nidhi (pronounced nitty) Chanani and I am an artist and illustrator living in San Francisco. When I think of sugar frosted goodness, I imagine plates of doughnuts or cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, ready and waiting to be devoured... I also think that diets are overrated and designed for cheating... wait, what? Oops, hi!

Here's some of my work!

2338. favorite favourite favorites

Jon Klassen is one of my favorite illustrators right now... and his very funny book I WANT MY HAT BACK is one of my favorite books -- there is talk of a Caldecott for it. (Interesting review in HORN BOOK on that.) It comes from one of my favorite publishers, Candlewick. (Here's the trailer

It takes hard work to look that easy. And a lot of time to be that simple.

And here's something else quite wonderful: his cover for the NYT book review...

Klassen writes of his illustration: "The book being reviewed, 'The Grief of Others' by Leah Hager Cohen, has a scene in it where a little girl holds a mock funeral in a river using ashes and chicken bones. She falls in and almost drowns right after that." via NYT

Ouch, I know, really pushing the pun thing today.

Can’t help it.

I like the puns.

But, for more holiday fun, some awesome illustration and possibly less pun-ridden sentiments, stop by and check out Marion and Laura’s HoHoDooDa shenanigans!

2341. Home Alone

I really like Home Alone. Though, I didn’t like the sequels much. Okay, I did like the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2.  So…… I watched this movie the other day with my six year old and now I hear the Home Alone scream constantly. She screams if her shoe comes untied… she screams at commercials. It was cute in movie, but to live with it 24/7…. not so much. It’s pretty funny to a kid, but to a grown up who has just waited a half an hour in the car rider’s line, it’s a little daunting. It will wear off as the year rolls along, only to be picked up again at next year’s holiday movie viewing. And, as I sit I here writing this, I have a sinister, but funny thought that I just might reenact that Home Alone scream on the day she introduces me to her first boyfriend!! :)

2342. Favourite Books of 2011 - John's Picks

2011 was another great year for books. As has become an annual tradition here are my favourite books from the past year, just in time for your holiday shopping — every one of these, perfect for the cartoon/illustration/design nerd on your list. Or get yourself a little something. Treat yourself.

Nobrow 6

Okay, I’m a little biased because I am contributor to this hefty and colourful book (as is Drawn’s Matt Forsythe). But even if I weren’t a contributor this would top my list. Nobrow expanded their biannual art magazine to a magnificent double issue, now with comics, named, fittingly, The Double. The entire thing is masterfully produced using Nobrow’s signature attention to the printing process. And that lineup! Tom Gauld, Michael DeForge, Gemma Correll, Joseph Lambert, Kevin Huizenga, Luke Pearson, and a zillion others.

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton

Not much can be said about Kate’s comics that hasn’t already been said this year. Her monstrously successful release and tour of this book, a collection of her best and most hilarious strips from her webcomic of the same name, is inspiring to anyone who creates content on the web.

I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen

A perfect (yes, perfect) picture book. Jon Klassen’s artwork is both lush and minimalist, and his writing is succinct and hilarious. Your kids’ eyes will widen, as will their smiles, when their little brains figure out the grisly (yes, pun intended) ending.

The Death Ray and Mister Wonderful by Daniel Clowes

2011 gave us two hardcover Daniel Clowes books, so that’s pretty alright, huh? I didn’t read The Death Ray in its original incarnation as Eightball issue 23, nor did I read Mister Wonderful when it was serialized in the New York Times Magazine. I’m clearly in the “wait until it comes out as a book” camp.

Mister Wonderful is Clowes’s most understated work. It may not be as funny as his usual output, but that doesn’t stop the main character from letting Clowes express his usual neurotic, cynical voice.

The Death Ray is a masterful non-superhero superhero story, and a rare graphic novel (if 42 pages sandwiched between two pieces of book board can actually be called a novel) that made me want to re-read it the minute I finished. Clowes is increasingly becoming the cartoonist I most want to study and dissect. I am constantly asking “how did he do that?” when I’m reading his work.

2343. you are perfectly reflected

I've been working on some commissions recently, a couple of which were for visitors to my exhibition in the summer. I was very interested, during the exhibition, to know which drawings people liked the best; not for any particular reason, just for curiosity, I suppose. The drawings of collections of little things always seemed to come out on top.

This is one of two 'small thing' drawings I have completed since then. I love these drawings. It's kind of like doing a jigsaw. There's so much satisfaction in finding another piece that slots perfectly into the blank space.

There is one issue I have with being commissioned to complete one of these drawings though; the moment when I have to ask "would you like me to include the pube?"

2344. A Christmas Story

I love this movie. it takes all the good, and the not so good parts of Christmas and satires it in a way that we all remember it fondly…. Can you relate?

2345. Going Bug-Eyed: Creating Vignette Illustrations in Photoshop

I have been chained to the computer lately, finishing the artwork for my latest book Baby Can Bounce!. I normally like to keep weekends work-free, but last weekend I had my nose to the screen all day, both days.

When the scans of my illustrations come back from the repro-house, the characters are of course still on my pink pastel paper:

The idea is to drop them on the same range of colours as Baby Goes Baaaaa!. Sarah, my designer at Egmont, tried out various possibilities, most of which I think worked really well. I made suggestions for a couple of changes, which she agreed: it's very much a team effort at this stage.

Once the colours had been decided, I then had the job of 'cutting out' the characters in Photoshop, to get rid of the pink paper. This little character is illustrating Baby can shake:

And that's not quite all: because the illustrations were drawn on pink, they don't necessarily 'sit' properly on the new colour straight away. So another job is to make any tonal or colour adjustments needed, so it looks as though I always intended it to be on that colour. This is always most obvious with the shadows at their feet.

2346. Hello! and first piece

Hello everybody!. My name is Juan Bauty, and i'm a children's/YA book illustrator in Zaragoza, Spain; I love the picture books, the fantasy books, fairy tales, dark/gothic/horror stories, comic-books, animated movies, sci-fi/fantasy movies and TV cartoons.

Nice to see all your awesome stuff, and thank you Jeff to accepting me in your sugar frosted family!.

This piece from above is "Elizabeth Bathory", the infamous Blood Countess. You can check out more of my artwork on my blog: http://juan-bauty.blogspot.com/ .

2347. Jen Mussari

The portfolio of Jen Mussari is an refreshing mix of quirky handrawn lettering and illustration. What I really enjoy about her style is that it seems very personal and focuses on art-making rather than the production of a commercial product. Jen, with some of her friends, recently launched a really cool project, S Magazine, featuring a lovely cover illustration.

If you want to see more of Jen’s work and maybe even buy a poster or two, check out her portfolio and Etsy page.

2349. HoHoDooDa Day 2

Squeaking a super quick doodle in at the last possible minute! Spent the day running from one holiday even to the next.

Don’t you just love little kids performing Christmas singing shows? There’s always one taking it all very seriously. Then there is the one who pretty much phones it in. If you’re lucky, there’s the token ham, stealing the scene. And, of course, the one poor little guy who completely chokes. You can tell who he/she  is by the lack of singing or movement and the look of abject terror in they’re eyes. It wouldn’t be a Christmas show without them.

Check out fellow HoHoDooDa pals, Marion and Laura‘s fabulous posts (done at a reasonable hour today.) You wont’ be disappointed.

Snow White

This appealing, exquisitely colored 1952 magazine illustration of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by children’s book illustrator Gyo Fujikawa will be auctioned next week at the Illustration House. Fujikawa worked briefly at the Disney animation studio before she moved to New York to pursue a career in advertising and illustration. The auction estimate for the painting is $5,000 to $7,000.
