33 hours, $4000 — you people need to do this.
Songgu Kwon is a former Xeric grant winner for Blanche the Baby Killer. He currently works in the animation business doing things like character designs for Metalocalypse. I daresay, he draws like a melon farmer. Gorgeous stuff.
He also has a long running webcomic called Elf that takes on RPG tropes in a weird and wacky way.
Imaging Knights of the Dinner Table drawn by Cliff Chiang. Sort of.
Anyway he has a kickstarter for acollected edition that needs only $4000 dollars in 33 hours. A little about it.
Elf is a fantasy web comic that I started in 2012 as a fun project that I could develop little by little, uploading just one page a week.

It began as a series of short vignettes centered around an archetypical Tolkienesque elf character and her talking wombat sidekick, Clarence. A rather strange fellow named Pieter would soon join them.

Clarence is no ordinary wombat. He’s really of a subspecies I like to call… the Greater Wombat!

The initial strips were conceived with very little planning. I wanted to poke fun at and pay homage to the high fantasy genre as represented in countless books, films, video games, and my own experiences playing table top RPGs in the days of my youth. In a nutshell, Elf is a story about a warrior called Blackfeather, who just wants to hang out with her pals, help others, and have adventures. This simple goal comes with many obstacles as deadly perils as well as the elf’s own past crash into her path.
Let’s do this people!
Yesterday I started a new semester at The Des Moines Art Center, teaching teens fantasy art. I've taught there for over a decade now ( O_O ) and I tried something I've never done before! It was super fun too, at least it got more interaction and conversation from the teens than usual.
I made three categories: symbol/animal/fantasy figure
There were ten in each category, folded up and placed in three cups. The kids divided a large sheet of drawing paper into eight sections and then drew whatever I pulled from the cups. Finally they picked one they liked and elaborated for the final.
I didn't draw with them during the eight, but I did sit and draw with them during the final. My personal favorite was
The first rule of Fight Clause is: You do not talk about Fight Clause.
Why not take a stroll on over here for links to see what the rest of the HoHoDooDa doodlers are doing.
Oh, and if you are wondering what the heck HoHoDooDa is, check this out.
It seems that those who hire love the speed of digital rendering, but want the look of traditional work. So, in an ever continuing effort to make my digital look more traditional, I’ve been working on some new techniques. I’ve been leaving in the pencil lines, and in fact, adding a lot more of it…..more detail and hatching before coloring them in Photoshop. I also use Kyle T Webster brushes. They’re fantastic! I highly recommend them!
I like the look. You can see the person behind it. This will be my winter promotional postcard.

Why not hip hop over here and see what the other HoHoDooDa Doodlers are up to!
I seem to do well with deadlines, did this in a few hours today between decorating the cake and baking gingerbread for my tags to go on presents.
Have a happy Christmas everybody

HIGH ELF ESTEEM
A redraw from last year.
Trying to get back to some sort of normal after the great loss suffered last week.
OH TANNEN-PALM, OH TANNEN-PALM!
Why not hula on over here and visit my fellow HoHoDooDa Doodlers!
Santa doesn’t have an iPhone yet, so he’s taking photos old-school.
For more holiday tom-foolery and frivolity, check out what my fellow HoHoDooDa Doodlers are doing here.
As nutty as November was, what with PiBoIdMo (thank you so much Tara Lazar!) and SkADaMo, it was just what the doctor ordered as far as a shot of creative, mojo-inducing stress.
Last December, to keep the momentum going, my fellow doodle pals and inspiring muses, Marion Eldridge, Laura Jacobson and I engaged in yet another month-long sketch-a-thon we dubbed HoHoDooDa, short for Holiday Doodle a Day (hmmm, not really that much shorter. Is it?) We did our best to create a holiday-themed doodle a day… or even every other day… or as often as humanly possible, throughout December.
What with the holidays and all, I admit it’s a little crazy and there may be some gnashing of teeth and tears shed, but overall, I’m sure it will be a blast and very rewarding, as it was last year. So, doin’ it again this year!
Anyone who wants to join in is more than welcome, regardless of what winter holiday you celebrate! Let me know in the comments if you’re game, along with the best URL to use and I’ll do my best to keep a list of links going so we can root for each other and enjoy the sugarplum fruits of each other’s doodle labors.
Let the doodling commence!
P.S. By the way, I realize I cheated tonight by using last year’s doodle. Tee hee!
For more HoHoDooDa frivolity check out the awesome Marion and Laura.
Go on.
You know you want to.
As nutty as November was, what with SkADaMo and PiBoIdMo, it was just what the doctor ordered as far as a shot of creative, mojo-inducing stress. So when fellow illustrators, Marion Eldridge and Laura Jacobson approached me with yet another month-long sketch-a-thon, I couldn’t resist.
We’re calling it “Holiday Doodle A Day” or HoHoDooDa for short… hmmm, is it really shorter? I don’t know… but hey, there you have it!
So we’re going to do our best to create a doodle a day… or every other day… or as often as humanly possible, throughout December.
Wish us luck and Happy Holidays!!!
Okay, I told you about this a few days ago and here it is!
Giovanni Gelati, blogmaster of Gelati's Scoop and host of the G-Zone on blog-talk-radio, created an innovative series called the Author's Lab with Trestle Press. Basically, he partners with a variety of authors to write an ongoing series of digital shorts. These e-books cover many genres mostly for adults, but I have the privilege of working with him on the first All-Ages story.
If you have a Kindle, it's only $0.99!
You will see inspiration from The Empyrical Tales, but this story takes on a life of its own. Hopefully, the G-Man and I will revisit these characters later this summer.
In the meantime, here is A Prince in Trenton, Seriously?
If you have already read The Fourth Queen and The Lost Queen, this will tide you over until The Secret Queen. If you haven't picked up The Empyrical Tales from Comfort Publishing yet, maybe this will entice you to step into my world!

It has been awhile. I've been busy. Sick kids, sick me. Tobogganing, visiting, playing, visiting, celebrating, helping, sharing, loving... and all good things. But, now things are ramping up career-wise again.
It is ALMOST Literacy Week - which means a very busy time for me. I am excited this year, because I get to spend two days with an ENTIRE school, working on a very exciting project. I will be visiting The Marysville Public School on Wolfe Island for a book workshop. I am also visiting the Belleville and Napanee Early Years Centre's for stories and crafts.
Here is a bit of (AWESOME) news - In the Snow is in the January ELF Scholastic Book Club order. This is seriously something I have dreamed of my WHOLE life. Ever since I got my very first books from Scholastic - all new and shiny - just for me... I have wanted this. I am so excited, I hope it does well enough they will also sell In the Garden - we will see.
Here's a sketch I did in pencil and punched up a bit in Photoshop. I'm always looking for markets to work in, especially fantasy markets but I find there's a real shift in the type of work I'm seeing. Less whimsical and much darker. I'm finding it a shame that the field seems to be narrowing. I think it's the violent online games popularity that is influencing things. Too bad.
ridiculously late in posting this but alas, the busy season of getting all the gifts out is done - time to smile,,,
one-line pen & ink drawing
It looks like I couldn't make up my mind between doing a woodland sprite and one of Santa's toy makers . . . so I split the difference! Who says a magical sprite can't make presents too?!

The new challenge is:
Elves!
Illustrate an elf or two. Santa's elves? Legolas? What'll it be?
The "Gratitude" challenge is over. The new challenge is "Elves" and ends on December 14, 2009. The "Feast" challenge continues for another week ends on December 7, 2009.
The "Feast" challenge (last week's challenge) winner will receive an actual prize! The prize will be appropriate to the winner, taking location and artist's style into account. You have 1 week left before judging (December 7, 2009).
Poor Santa! Cute.
