26. We Give Books - Read For My School

I thought I'd take a break from our busy Valentine's Day and let you know about a special campaign for public schools. Starting today, Feb. 14, the We Give Books website is running a new literacy campaign, "Read for My School." It's a really good way for kids to help out their schools, and get a little reading in at the same time. Depending on the number of books kids read online, schools can earn up to 500 books.
More information here: http://www.wegivebooks.org/campaigns/rfms

We Give Books is a wonderful online resource for digital children's books. It's free although parents and teachers must first register before kids can read books. The website is run by the Pearson Foundation and every time a child reads a book on the site the foundation in turn provides books to various literacy foundations -- a win/win for all. Several Penguin and DK Publishing books, both non-fiction and fiction, are available for children to read and the books are appropriate for various levels up to age 10. Both my kids love looking at all the books online and I'm surprised at the number of popular books available like the Llama Llama books and The Snowy Day. My son especially loves the new book based on a true story, Little Dog Lost by Mônica Carnesi.

Even if your child doesn't attend a public school, make sure to take a look. You can help support other campaigns such as Support My School India and Tinga Tinga Tales Early Childhood Development Programme supporting children in Africa. And all the while your child will benefit as well!

27. How to Create a Website in 3 Steps (with 10 thumbs)

How to Create a Website in 3 Steps (with 10 thumbs). This is good sense advice succinctly put from Jo Ann Carson. NOTE – you do not have to buy. Word Press, Yola, Weebly and Wix all provide excellent ‘free’ – yes, that’s what I said, FREE’ site templates, easy to assemble [if I can, anyone can] with lots of whizz-bang features!

29. Lately Lily is the creative collaboration between illustrator...

Lately Lily is the creative collaboration between illustrator Micah Player and apparel designer Erin Nichols. Using the interesting set up featuring Lily, a fictional traveling daughter of a photographer and writer for “the world’s greatest magazine,” the site provides young girls a chance to view the world through her eyes. You get to see where she is currently, check out her traveling notebook, help her pack her suitcase, and be able to buy tee shirts featuring Lily’s striking visage. Bold colors, broad strokes, colorful design make this a fantastic site to visit for young ones. Or, for people like me, who happen to love great illustration.

The dot Triple-X domains are coming!

.xxx (known as “dot triple-X”) is a voluntary option for pornographic sites on the Internet. The ICANN Board (which controls issues of domains) voted to approve the .xxx on March 18, 2011 and they opened on April 15, 2011. So, what’s the big deal now?

The TLD entered its sunrise phase on 7 September 2011, and basically anyone with a registered Trademark could get MyName.xxx domain during that time. This prevents a pornographic site from reserving Harvard.xxx and showing Harvard girls. General availability of .xxx domains begins on 6 December 2011.

Why should you care?

Book Titles.

19 Girls and Me. A story about friendship in a kindergarten class with 19 girls and one lone boy.

My children’s picture book entitled 19 Girls and Me has always gotten strange hits from folks searching for lots of girls. So, you may want to reserve your domain and make sure your book’s title and your name don’t become famous on the .xxx circuit. The story is about a kindergarten class with 19 girls and one lone boy, it’s a story about gender relationships. NOT a dot Triple-X type of story at all. But the title could be twisted.

Name Recognition.
If you have great name recognition, you may also want to reserve your own .xxx domain to prevent unwanted associations.

Costly Domains
One difficulty is that a regular .com or .org or .net domain costs less than $10/year. The dot triple-x sites will be more; GoDaddy.com is currently advertising for $99.99/year, but I’ve seen price quotes of $200.

This is shady territory! But something you may want to think about!

31. New resource online: INDIANS OF THE MIDWEST

Yesterday, the Newberry Library in Chicago launched a new online resource: Indians of the Midwest. I spent hours going through it, learning some things, and finding it an excellent source of information.

If you go to the site right now (I imagine the graphic will change over time), you'll see photos that cycle from one to the other. One is an 1842 drawing of a Menominee village. Immediately following it is a photograph of an Ojibwe neighborhood in Bad River, Wisconsin. It makes the point that Native peoples of today live in houses, much like anyone else.

The site is multi-media and very user-friendly. There is, for example, an "Ask a Question" option. If you submit a question, it will be answered on the page. Rather than go on about its merits, I'll just send you right over to Indians of the Midwest.

35. fortunately I have a website; unfortunately I don’t have email; fortunately I have another email

Do you know the book, Fortunately by Remy Charlip?* My life has seemed a lot like that book for the last six weeks, especially my website:

Unfortunately, the company that hosts my website had a catastrophic server failure about six weeks ago, which meant no website, blog, or email.

Fortunately, they fixed it in about a week.

Unfortunately, my site and blog were missing pages, my email still didn’t work, and my blog kept disappearing and reappearing.

Fortunately, they let me switch to a new server.

Unfortunately, my blog disappeared for good.

Fortunately, my blog returned about a week later (nobody knows why). And it has a cool new design and background image!

Unfortunately, my email has now disappeared and they don’t know why. (Great timing, since I just gave out a couple hundred postcards and business cards with my email on them at the LA SCBWI conference** this weekend.) Update: email is back up and running!

Fortunately, I have another website for my pen name (Ani Louise), so if you’re trying to email me, please send it to: al (at) anilouise.com. I’m crossing my fingers that my sruble.com email will be back up and running again soon! Update: email is back up and running!

Unfortunately, I have food poisoning and had to stay in LA for an extra day.

Fortunately, the hotel had a room available and I was able to switch my flight. And I’m starting to feel a bit better. Should be able to fly home tomorrow (crossing my fingers).

* If you don’t know, Fortunately by Remy Charlip, you should check it out. It’s an excellent book!

** Notes soon … if I still have a blog!

38. I've been dating my website.

I've got a secret for you, I've been dating my website lately. We've had a couple of really hot dates! I revamped my website completely in February. A total redesign to showcase my work and make my life easier. No more week long struggles to add or delete images. Who has time for that? Not me. I opted for a WordPress website using Headway. I lost my beloved disjointed rollovers, but you just can't beat only having to spend 15 minutes switching images in and out is a dream come true!

Of course, I was so convinced of my genius and mad design skills, that I figured the money would then start rolling in. (Insert crickets here.) I added such brilliant SEO keywords, how could the masses not flock to my site? (More crickets.) In desperation, I turned to my Twitter buddy, Sarah J. Bray, for help. She's a genius, for sure. You should definitely go check out her website! She recently launched a new program where she walks you through hot dates with your website. I signed up immediately! I've been doing it for two weeks now and I'm loving it! She's got me thinking in new ways. I'll keep you posted on how it goes, but I have great hopes! I love her writing style and her insight. I've wanted to work with her for awhile and this is the time.

This is an affiliate link. I'm really using her program and wanted to share how excited I am!

42. City Girl and a blog award

It's Tuesday and that means that I'm supposed to post Melwick. He's going to be up tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. To hold you over until then here is another illustration I just finished and wanted to share.

This image is also the newest update on my newly updated website. I'd love to hear what you think about it. (meaning the website, but you can tell me what you think of the image as well)

And, last week I received this:
Which was super nice of PZ desigs to find my blog and award it to me. I am finally finding time to pass it on. But first I have to tell you all seven things about me. Here we go:

1. In the very near future you may see me dressed up like Tinkerbell at a birthday party near you (if you live in Utah). I'm working on the ol' costume and will soon be attending parties as Tinkerbell.

2. Cooking is my new favorite Hobby. I just made some awesome bread and can't wait to eat it for dinner tonight.

3. Jeeves and Whooster is a really funny show. Doctor Who is my favorite show.

4. Going off of that last one, I have a crush on BBC drama's.

5. I didn't think I would like Twitter, but I really do. I've been a tweeter for a couple months now, and I have been avoiding Facebook as much as possible. It sucks away your time if your not careful.

6. I'm currently reading Linchpin. It's fantastic. My favorite of Seth Godin's books (that I've read) so far. I just have to apply it to life now... and I will so there.

7. I believe families can be together forever.

Ok, there are some things about me.
Now here are some of my favorite creative blogs for you to look at, and for me to pass on the award to:
Illustrators
Sherry Meidell
Shawna Tenney
Sam Ricks
Nasan Hardcastle

Food
ErikEats

Home Decor
Color Me Happy

ok so that's not 15 but, and I do follow a lot more than 15 awesome blogs but... well that's all I'm posting for you.  Have a great day!

If one of those blogs is yours and you want to accept the award this is what you do:

1. Put a picture of the Stylish Blogger Award in your blog.
2. Thank and link back to the person who awarded it to you.
3. Share 7 things about yourself.
4. Pass this award to 15 other creative bloggers!
43. Working with Dreamweaver CS5

My revised website  is updated and now I will let it rest awhile before adding any more.  I need to be sure the links are working and the pages still make me happy after a week or two.

The site includes links to articles, books I have illustrated, a bio and contact along with portfolio pages in color and line.  Using the upgrade to Dreamweaver CS5 has been a bit of a challenge for me personally but I am finding it easier to use day by day.

I am thrilled to announce the dawn of a new era at First Book:  the official debut of our brand-new website!

Read more about our impact , our outstanding partners, and how we continue to innovate.  First Book is helping guide the publishing industry and giving heroic educators greater choice and voice in the books and learning resources available to them like never before.

45. Website retweek

Hi everyone,
If you have been over at my new website, you may notice that did a little retweeking. I rearranged the layout of the "Home" page and changed the way the portfolio images are viewed. At first the portfolio images  opened up in a new window but I changed them to open in the same window for ease of navigation. I took the great advice form my friends in the zero2illo forum, and also moved up my image rotator on this page so that most of it is visible once you land on the page and then you don't have to scroll down to get the full image. I also decreased the height of my header as well, to help create more space for the image rotator. At the top are my favorite 2 of the 9 variations I came up with for a new header design. I know 9, yeah...totally type A of me- hahaha.
I opted to go with the top header image. If you have a preference I'd love to hear it!:)
Now that the website is live I am looking forward to getting back to messing around with my plasticine and get creating. I have a project I hope to finish in a few weeks so stay tuned for updates.
Bye for now!

46. New website is LIVE!!!

Hello,
I just launched my new portfolio website suzannedelrizzo.com. It will probably take a few days(?) to show up as I just submitted it to Google, Yahoo, MSN etc., so hopefully it will be crawled soon so it is visible to the world!
I was hoping to get it up yesterday but we've had a nasty bout of stomach flu on a rampage thru the house and all the kids have come down with it ON SEPARATE DAYS!!! So this website launch has had to wait.
I hope you will all take a second to read through the content, and check out all of my images and if you notice any typo.s or have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to share!
Thanks hubby for being patient when I was frustrated and tired, you are the best! But I think it was worth all the work!;)
If anyone is thinking of creating their own website I highly recommend the Headway WP theme. It really made it easy once I got the hang of it.
Crawl googlebots crawl.....I wanna share my website with everyone!

47. Fresh new look to match my new website!!

So this is the reason I have been so absent from my dear little blog lately.....I'm finally putting a proper website together.  Here is a sneak peek of my new portfolio website, well a screen shot of the top half of the "Home" page at least. I am so excited to share it with you all, but it isn't quite finished yet. I hope to launch it next week if all goes as planned!
We've had a case of the stomach flu hit the family so fingers crossed it doesn't make the rounds to all of us and slow down my momentum!
I am using the Headway theme from Wordpress and it has been tons of fun playing around with it.

I wanted to have the same look and feel on both my website and this blog. But since it looks a little more complicated  to make the switch from Blogger to WP, I've decided  to stay put and just match it up as best I can for the time being.
So I switched templates, customized it a bit by changing the background to my cool plasticine image, re-sized my cute header, and changed some fonts and colours and voila!
What do ya think?
I hope everyone will please check out my website once it goes live at suzannedelrizzo.com, and give lots of constructive crit.s and comments too.

It looks like Febuary is going to be a busy month with artwork that has been put on the back burner while I've been getting the website put together so I promise to have lots of artwork illustrations to show soon!:)

48. Tips to Generate Web Traffic

I have a valuable guest article from Beth Ann Erickson. So, without further ado:

Generate Web Traffic
By Beth Ann Erickson

You've got a website. Good for you! Now comes the hard part: How do you get traffic?

I've read that when it comes to owning your own site, what matters most is how many hits you get.  However, I disagree.

As a writer, you're selling a specialized product - yourself and your writing skills.  This means you may not want every member of the general public visiting your site.  What you do want are potential clients and customers to find you.

How do you do that?

You can start by creating an e-mail signature.  A signature is a blurb your program inserts at the end of every e-mail you send.

Mine reads:

Make your writing sparkle. Write killer queries. Get published.
Subscribe to Writing Etc. the free e-mag for writers.  Receive the
free e-booklet "Power Queries" by subscribing today.
http://filbertpublishing.com

Microsoft Outlook allows you to create a signature under "Tools" on the menu bar then select "Options."  Other e-mail programs are probably different.  If you need help, just go to your program's
"help" option and run a search.

Make your signature concise, benefit oriented, and don't forget to include your URL.  Use everything you know about copywriting to write something snappy and memorable.

Now that your signature is done, write ten to twenty key words that describe your web site.

FilbertPublishing's key words include:
Writer, Write, Writing, Freelance, Copywriting, Fiction, Nonfiction... you get the point.

Now you're ready to register with a few search engines.

There are thousands of search engines out in cyber space but most of them aren't going to give you enough traffic to warrant registering with them.  I'd suggest you just shoot for the biggies and then go back to the smaller ones if you want to.

Some of the engines you may want to "submit your site" to are:

http://google.com
http://AltaVista.com
http://www.dogpile.com
http://www.webcrawler.com
http://nerdworld.com
http://www.yahoo.com

As you "submit your site," you'll be using your key words and signature "blurb" to fill in their forms.

If your web site is about a particular subject, chances are there is a "web ring" you can join.  Go to http://www.yahoo.com, type in "web ring" and check them out.  Filbert Publishing is a member of a
number of fiction writing web rings.

Next, you need to find out where your potential clients hang out.

If you want to write for small businesses, find e-mail lists and newsgroups that cater to these folks.  A quick search in Yahoo or the Google Newsgroup (formally Deja News) will give you enough information to get to work.

Frequent these newsgroups, e-mail lists, and listservs, and join in the conversation.  Don't promote yourself blatantly, but let your new e-mail signature do the selling for you.  Blatant selling is not permitted, but the soft sell of an e-mail sig is certainly welcomed.

49. Papering Over my iPad

I'm a techno-geek. There's no arguing that. But I'm bad about buying gadgets that I use for like a week (like that ereader I've got around here somewhere) and then never picking it up again.

So, it took me awhile to convince myself to get an iPad. Fortunately, the thing is pretty cool, and if nothing else, I'll probably use it for quite some time as a car TV for my son for roadtrips. (Although if I have to listen to Elmo's squeaky voice for another minute in the car, I'm not sure I'll be rational enough to be held accountable for my actions.)

However, being said techno-geek, one of the first things I had to do was design new wallpaper for my iPad based on various CBAY Books. Since I was working on The Amulet of Amon-Ra website at the time, I made paper for it first. And now, since just this very minute I finished that site, I'm now sharing my techno-geekiness with everyone.

Screenshots of my iPad:

And because you can also hold it horizontally:

Nope, I'm not a geek. Not a geek at all.

Want to show your Amulet pride? You can get the iPad/iPhone background here.
