2. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Midnight Release Party Slated for GeekyCon!

GeekyCon 2016 has just announced that it is creating a large-scale, old-school, Harry Potter release party to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The book comes out on July 31, 2016, the last day of the convention, which means that it will be the site of one of the biggest midnight parties in the country.

And this party is just one of all the cool and amazing events and activities scheduled for the weekend long festivity that is GeekyCon. As GeekyCon was once a Harry Potter-only convention and is planned by the same crew that brought us LeakyCon, it is backed by and attended by some of the biggest Harry Potter fans on the planet. As many of the people who run GeekyCon are still the biggest Potterheads, and have attended more than their fair share of Harry Potter book parties from 2004-2007, they decided to recreate the Harry Potter Book Midnight Release Party experience!

The party will be hosted by classic Potter podcast MuggleCast and PotterCast, and many others with experience and knowledge of Pottermania. The fun will start at 7 PM with the convention’s traditional Esther Earl Rocking Charity Ball. Starting at 10:00 PM, festivities will convert themselves into a huge Harry Potter and the Cursed Child midnight book release . In tried and true Harry Potter Book Midnight Release party fashion, there will be a set of games, activities, and events to take part of–including, but not limited to:

  • Costume Contests
  • Sorting
  • Trivia and other games
  • Wizard Chess
  • Quidditch
  • Wizard Rock performances
  • Face painting and other crafts
  • Video retrospectives
  • Appearances from special guests
  • Put your name in the Goblet of Fire! (Submit your predictions, and we’ll go through them together at Sunday’s programming!)
  • Share in the Pensieve: Submit memories about Harry Potter and your experiences; we’ll be sharing them throughout the night.
  • And a lot more!

At midnight, everyone will begin to receive their book copy of the Cursed Child script! You must reserve a copy, and purchase will happen on site. Full, detailed instructions will shortly follow this announcement.

Fans in the Florida area, and maybe those who want to apparate further, can choose to come to just the party (which includes the ball) for $20, to enjoy the night’s festivities. If you are a full registered GeekyCon attendee, you can join us for the whole weekend — during which there will be a lot of Harry Potter related festivities and programming. Sunday we’ll be discussing Cursed Child almost nonstop!

Are you pumped up yet? We are so excited!

4. My Little Pony™ Party!

My Little Pony was around when I was growing up, and now the ponies have
returned with some sass, and my daughter is crazy about them.

Cutie mark cupcakes - here we go!  Making treats are my favorite party task.
Decorate them with rock candy, Dots Gumdrops, confetti sprinkles, jelly beans,
rolled and cut Tootsie Fruit Chews, and rainbow Airheads Extremes Bites.
Making the six cutie marks was creative-fun!

Have the kids help.  You can't go wrong with marshmallow pops.
Dip marshmallows in melted colored chocolates,
and garnish them with sprinkles.

A piñata for everyone!  I wrapped craft rolls with
printed napkins and tulle, and tied one end of each with ribbons.
Kids enjoyed filling the opens end with chocolates and candies.
They tied the loose ends
and were pleased to have their
own
piñatas to take home .

Pony Dress-Up Time!
The girls loved dressing up, and accessorizing with hair clips and rings.
Assembling tutus and pony tails to pin is simple and affordable.
Click here to view Martha Stewart's tutu-making video.
To make the tails, use colorful, fluffy yarn and tie them together
with some pretty ribbons.

Here's a cool activity to include the boys.
The children filled miniature jars with colorful jewels and rocks.

I found this My Little Pony™ bracelet charm kit online,
and it was a great party activity for all ages.

free My Little Pony printables on her site.
They were perfect for printing party favor name tags.
Visit Michelle's blog for more My Little Pony party printables.

If you have a My Little Pony fan,
I hope you find some inspiration here for your next party!

8. Home once again, at least for a moment…

Commission Sketch of Chris Hemsworth.

Commission Sketch of Chris Hemsworth.

After a whirlwind tour of the southwest, I am finally home and ready to take a nap. Yet there is no rest for the wicked, new art to do, a book to illustrate, shows to prepare for, and generally going crazy… in a good way. So where to begin? Let’s start with a short recap of the shows I attended.

First up was there was the Long Beach Comic Expo which this year expanded to two days this year. This turned out to be a great move as attendance was great this year and everyone had a great time. We had an odd placement for our table that had me a bit worried, but it all worked out quite well. Lots of great costumes, fun panels for all ages, plus perfect Long Beach weather, what more could one ask for? Next year they are holding it earlier in the year on February 28th and March 1st, plus they are moving into the larger halls, roughly about five times of the space they had this year. So they are going bigger and better, hopefully they are not expanding too big, too fast as I love this convention and want to see it continue for years to come.

Maleficent and Evil Queen looking good... I mean evil.

Maleficent and Evil Queen looking good… I mean evil.

Then it was off to the surface of the sun… I mean Arizona for the Phoenix Comicon, which was a fantastic show. There were over 77,000 fans in attendance that kept me and Shawn busy through the weekend. I was amazed at the cosplayers that braved the heat in full costume, brave dedicated fans they are. On a note about Phoenix, I love this show so much that next year is a big thing is happening. Drum roll please… I am moving out of the artist alley into a booth for the show next year. It is amazing and nerve wracking at the same time, but the correct move as my business moves forward and grows.

Shawn and I stayed in Phoenix for the week (thank you Keith), as we had a show the following weekend, Mad Monster Party. This was a small horror convention that took place in downtown Phoenix. It was a fun little show (lots of fun because we were next to our friends from The Mystical Apothecary) that has promise if they bring it back next year, lots of cool fans of horror showed up and there were some great celebrity guests to meet. One of the problems was that since it was the week after the comic con and there might have been some fans that were too worn out to come to this event. There were also some people that seem to find out about the event by happenstance and were unaware of the Mad Monster Party before hand. Their main show is in Charlotte, NC and that one has a great turnout; so maybe with some patience and love, the Phoenix show will grow to attract more attendees.

Diana versus Bumblebee... plus Justin and Hilary Orr photo bombing.

Taking Bumblebee down… plus Justin and Hilary Orr photo bombing.

Finally we headed north to the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con, a show I vended at last year on their inaugural show. Taking place at the South Point Casino (which is quickly becoming one of my favorite casinos), this year it was bigger and better organized in the placement of tables and booths. Attendance was up this year, but sales were down slightly, but overall a successful show. Thanks to our booth neighbors of Abe Lopez and Stuart Smithee; also thanks to the photo bombers supreme of Justin and Hilary Orr from across the aisle.

With Abraham Lopez... with Nic Cage?

With Abraham Lopez… and Nic Cage?!?

I have a few weeks off before San Diego Comic Con (sadly still no booth, but I will have art up in the Sails Pavilion gallery there), so I must go work on some new art pieces for the upcoming shows.

Have fun and keep creating…

10. Xander's Panda Party: Linda Sue Park & Matt Phelan

Book: Xander's Panda Party
Author: Linda Sue Park (@LindaSuePark)
Illustrator: Matt Phelan (@MattPhelanDraws)
Pages: 40
Age Range: 4-8

Xander's Panda Party, by Linda Sue Park, is, as you might expect, a picture book about a panda named Xander who wants to throw a party. It's also about inclusiveness and about battling loneliness.

Xander wants to have a rip-roaring panda party. But this turns out to be a bit tricky, as he is the only panda in the zoo. So he expands his idea to invite all of the bears. But it turns out that Koala is actually a marsupial. He doesn't want to leave her out, so Xander has to expand the party to encompass all mammals. But then Rhinoceros wants to bring his bird, and so on, and so on, until everyone at the zoo is invited to the bash. Xander's generosity of spirit is rewarded at the end, when a very special new friend arrives at the zoo.

Park's text is poetic, using lots of rhyme without being sing-songy. Like this:

"But Xander was the only panda. Just one panda at the zoo.
Xander sat and chewed bamboo. He changed his plans and point of view."

Doesn't that just beg to be read aloud?  And this:

"Xander's party preparations took great pains and perspiration.
"The menu needs some taste sensations, plus the proper vegetation!""

Delightful! This is a book that parents will be able to read over and over again, because the cadence is so enjoyable. There are also plenty of strong vocabulary words, like "congregating" and "fidgeted."

The message of inclusiveness, while certainly present, is surrounded by the gentle humor of the story, such that it doesn't feel overwhelming. I like that it's not always obvious to Xander that he should keep expanding his party. He really struggles with the decision each time. This having to work to decide to do the right thing will certainly make the book resonate more with young readers.

As rendered in ink and watercolor by Matt Phelan, Xander is adorable. His loneliness at the start of the book is palpable. His joy at the end will bring a smile to any reader's face. The other animals are sketched in, interesting though not quite realistic, but the focus remains on Xander. My favorite page is one filled with small vignettes, as Xander races about the zoo, inviting other creatures to his party, leaving a trail of colored envelopes behind.

It sounds a bit trite to say that a picture book is heart-warming. But what can I say? Xander's Panda Party is heart-warming, entertaining, and eminently read-aloudable. It is not to be missed.

11. This Saturday

JLB Creatives, a Lake County business that is Bringing Light to the Literary World, announced a unique author event for its summer offering asAuthors in the Park returns to Mount Dora. The event, Picnic with an Author, is set for Saturday, July 6th from 11 AM to 1 PM. Ten local authors will gather at the Gilbert Park pavilions, located on the northeast corner of Liberty Avenue and South Grandview Street, near the Mount Dora Lighthouse. Mark Miller, Social Media Executive for JLBC, encouraged fans and readers to join in for the full event. Food will be provided by Mount Dora’s Round Lake Christian Church for a small donation, he said.

“We’re serving lunch the entire time,” Miller said. “Fans and readers will have the special opportunity to sit with the author of their choice or visit all of the authors.”  The authors, Miller said, will be reading from their novels, discussing their works, and answering questions for fans and aspiring writers. Genres will range from epic fantasy to local history, and much more.
JLBC Conventions & Events executive and author, Jean E. Lane, mentioned with excitement that JLB Creatives has scheduled talented writers from around Lake County and even as far as Tampa and Jacksonville.
In attendance will be:

Janet Beasley - Inspirational Fantasy - http://amzn.to/Yw1Nd3
Lisa DeMarco - Children - http://amzn.to/186z209
Bethany Jett - Christian - http://amzn.to/18RokaG
L.R. Knost - Parenting, Non-Fic - http://amzn.to/190RGWP
Jean E. Lane - Sci-Fi, Children - http://amzn.to/100NFrv
Amy I. Long - Historical Romance - http://amzn.to/1b8KWCQ
De Miller - Mystery, Christian - www.DeMiller.com
Mark Miller - Fiction - http://amzn.to/17rhyuu
Rick Reed - Local History
Linda Wood Rondeau - Christian - http://amzn.to/190TKOz

“We are thrilled how much this has grown,” Janet Beasley, President of JLB Creatives and co-creator of the Authors in the Park event series, said. “Our Facebook page is getting traffic from as far away as England and people are talking about our events at work and school. We work hard to make this very different from your typical author book signing. Authors in the Park can be found on Facebook at www.FB.com/AuthorsInThePark.
“The goal of Authors in the Park fits right into JLB Creatives' purpose. It promotes authors, both self- and traditionally published,” Janet said. “They have good things to share and great books for sale.” Beasley also noted that anyone purchasing a book from one of the authors on the day of the event will get a free hot dog.
To enhance the picnic atmosphere, there will be face painting by Rachel Clunn and a few other surprises, Miller said. “With summer reading in full swing, this is a great event for children and adults.” He urges readers to follow Authors in the Park on Facebook for updates and future events.

12. Happy SOLSTICE Release Party!

The true summer solstice seemed the perfect day for a book release party, so we decided to host a party at the house, on the actual summer solstice. It was the perfect excuse to get the kitchen remodel finished at last, get the house in order, and have a party!

I'll recap in pictures, but I want to offer a huge thank you for the amazing group of friends who came to help me celebrate the release of SOLSTICE. I am awed by your friendship and support, and I cannot thank you enough! You guys are the best in the world and I am so fortunate to have each and every one of you in my life!

And now on to the pics!

I happened to have a fun Greek column (plant stand) that Danny Woodfill from The Book Spot turned into the perfect SOLSTICE display stand!
And SOLSTICE was written up in the Sunday Austin American Statesman, so I laminated the article and hung it on the wall above.

Me with SOLSTICE!

So this was our first party where we hired a bartender, and it was THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD! Above is Bartender James, all set up and ready for the people.

Along with Bartender James was his wife, Melody, who was like a superwoman. She manned the wine, took drink orders, filled food trays, and cleaned up. Seriously loved this woman!

Cupcakes were care of Cupprimo here in Austin! They made up three special kinds, two featuring pomegranate, and one that was chocolate with cutout covers of SOLSTICE on top!

And here is the full dessert table. I forgot to take a picture of the snacks and sandwiches, but we had tons and tons of food. I always tend to overestimate this kind of thing.
Also, thank you to Jessica Lee Anderson for the GAPS/GLUTEN-FREE treats!
And with pitchers full of candy, you can never go wrong :)

Danny built a Greek temple of copies of SOLSTICE!
A huge thank you to Danny and Julie at The Book Spot for coming out and selling books at the event!

OMG thank you to everyone who brought flowers and wine! You guys are amazing, and I love having the flowers to look at. They make me smile :)

While decorating for the party, I found the perfect thing for my art guy to hold!

I forgot to take any more pics at the event, but here are a few I snagged off Facebook and Twitter.

Me with Ariane Felix who drove up from San Antonio for the event!

And me with Jessica Lee Anderson!

L to R: Gene Brenek, Tim Crow, and Greg Leitich Smith
Thanks to Cynthia Leitich Smith for the pictures!

L to R: Mari Mancusi, Madeline Smoot, and Jo Whittemore

E. Kristin Anderson and Stephanie Pellegrin

Cynthia Leitich Smith and Shana Burg

And the finished kitchen! I am so happy it finally all came together! A party is a good motivator.

13. Cinco de Mayo!

Image

On May 5th, around the United States and Mexico, colorful decorations will hang, mariachi bands will play, and people will party in the street to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. This holiday celebrates Mexican culture – the music, the traditions, the food, but why, exactly, are we celebrating on this day? Some people think that Cinco de Mayo marks the day when Mexico became independent from Spain, or when the Mexican Civil War ended. Nope! Actually, Cinco de Mayo celebrates a battle in a war that Mexico lost!

Mexico had a tough start as a country, enduring war after war, first against America in 1846, then against themselves in the Mexican Civil War. When all this was over, the country had spent so much on war that there was very little money for regular people to spend in their lives; in other words, the economy was hurt. As countries sometimes do, Mexico borrowed money from other nations in order to help itself. And, as friends sometimes do when you borrow a toy or book from them, those countries got tired of waiting for Mexico to give their property back and came over to collect. No, their moms didn’t drive them over in the van or anything like that; fleets of warships representing England, Spain and France crossed the Atlantic Ocean, entered the Mexican coastline and demanded that Mexico pay them back.

Mexico didn’t have the money to pay them though! What’s a young country to do?! All they had were vouchers to give to the representatives from these countries, papers that double-super-promised to someday pay them back. This satisfied England and Spain and they went home, but to France, this meant war! Sacre bleu!

Under the command of Napoleon III, France invaded Mexico with the intention to totally control it. They marched from the coastline to Mexico City, and on the way passed the small Mexican state of Puebla. The Mexican soldiers at Puebla were vastly outnumbered, but in this fight on May 5, 1862, called La Batalla de Puebla, Mexico somehow overcame the odds and defeated the French forces! Now that’s reason to celebrate!

France eventually managed to occupy Mexico, but they were delayed a whole year by this surprising Mexican victory. The shocking, underdog victory at Puebla has come to symbolize the Mexican spirit of resilience and tenacity. Therefore, on its anniversary every year, Mexico and places with many people of Mexican descent play Cumbia music, wave the Mexican flag, eat tamales, hit pinatas, and generally celebrate all things Mexico!

Of course, at Sylvan Dell we celebrate Mexican people and culture every day! Each and every one of our dozens of titles are available in Spanish, such as Los árboles de globos and La naturaleza recicla—¿Lo haces tú? and El detective deductive!

14. Into the Pumpkin by Linda Franklin

4 Stars
Into the Pumpkin
Kinda Franklin
Schiffer Publishing
No. Pages: 48 Ages: 4 to 11

It’s Halloween Party time again and the witches, bats, ghouls, ghosts, black cats, scarecrows, ravens, and spiders have come together for the annual bash. Questions remain. Where should they have the party, in the graveyard or the pumpkin patch? Will they dress up or go as themselves? Take a ride on a witches broom to find the answers to this year’s Halloween party.

You will hop on the witch’s broom for a journey like no other. Each creature of the night has a part to play. The bats are letting all know about the party, the ghouls are planning the treat or treating. The witch mails out invitations. Is she not a little bit late, or does she have magic on her side? Everyone has a job to do, right down to the scarecrow, who is the host of the night’s ball.

The biggest question, it seems, is where to hold the party. In the graveyard, the haunted castle, or the pumpkin patch. I like the haunted castle. It has great character standing amidst the ghosts. The graveyard is the spookiest and the pumpkin patch says nothing about the Great Pumpkin, so for me, it must happen at the haunted castle. Once the party is over, and the raven has sung all he came to sing, the witch sends us back home by way of the pumpkin patch. It is quite a journey on this Halloween night.

Told in rhyming verse, the Halloween party plans are whimsical. There is nothing here to scare a little one. The illustrations have a ghoulish, haunted feel, yet are bright and fun. It is the illustrations that make this book for me. I like the orange cast of Halloween and the feel of spider webs and wisps of clouds covering each illustration. This lends a feeling of motion and emotion to each picture.  All the fall colors of Halloween are there. The oranges, yellows, whites, browns, and especially the blacks come together in delightful ways. The ghosts are dancing in a circle and I can hear the music as they twirl.

The text is a poem broken down verse by verse on the pages and illustrated by the author. She has made an unusual book with a familiar theme. Most of the lines roll right off the tongue in the lyrical way I enjoy. I think the illustrations are what make this book a winner. Anyone who enjoys Halloween will delight in Into the Pumpkin. I see this book as a family favorite, visited each year alongside the Great Pumpkin and treat or treating.

Into the Pumpkin is party planning that will not frighten a soul. To those of you who collect picture books for the fantastic illustrations, this is a must have. The illustrations are wonderfully enchanting. Into the Pumpkin could have just as easily have been dark, ghoulish, and frightening; the thing nightmares are made out of. Ms. Franklin chose to go the opposite direction and made a story any child can enjoy at any age. Into the Pumpkin is a Halloween winner.

15. The Electric Tomatoes are 20 Years Old!

These drawings are my quick-fire sketches of The Electric Tomatoes in action, at our recent celebrations:

Long before I began writing my first picture book texts as part of my work, I was writing for fun. I have always enjoyed language and always written, whether it was essays, letters, travel diaries, stories or poems. But my writing was pulled into focus 20 years ago. I'd recently moved to Sheffield from London and didn't know anyone, so I signed up for various university evening classes, including a creative writing class, run by the performance poet Matt Black.

At each session, we'd be given random subjects or themes to write around. Sometimes the stimulus was an image, sometimes a word, sometimes a walk... It was fun. When the course came to an end, several of those in the group decided to continue on our own. We kept the format and met every Tuesday night to write for about 90 minutes, read round, then go to the pub to chew the fat.

The group quickly thinned down to a core of half a dozen and we called ourselves The Electric Tomatoes. Occasionally we perform our work, mostly we just enjoy t

The previous (relatively new too) Floating Lemons banner and logo were just a bit too heavy and serious, so I've replaced it with something slightly more cheerful that I feel reflects better the lighter and more whimsical feel of the illustrations. I think this one's a Keeper :)

We've also opened a new Floating Lemons online store at Zazzle : Floating Lemons Events. As I know absolutely nothing about throwing parties, never mind weddings, I've been researching like mad for months and although I'm still very green I think I've learned a bit -- hopefully enough to understand the basics of what is needed for most events, large or small. Any advice, critical or otherwise, is extremely welcome!

I started the ball rolling with one of my old colored pencil drawings as it's a popular one, and cheerful and bright, my Red Poppy:

The first Theme that's JUST been posted at Zazzle is a Wedding theme based on the above drawing, with a teal colour to match it. I've aqua (love the aqua and red combination), apple green and lime green lined up as well, but started off with the teal, creating wedding stationery (I think I have everything covered, from invitations, 'save the date' announcements, 'will you be my ...' cards, menu cards, to ceremony programs and everything in between) and gifts to match as thank you gifts and party favors all with fully customizable text so that names and details can be changed. phew. If I've missed anything out let me know.

I really needed the extra work ... not. But I'm quite enjoying this trip into something new, and love the design process despite the headaches (from banging it against the wall once again) and loss of hair (tearing it out, yes). As I said, advice and comments are very welcome!

The new store can be found at: Floating Lemons Events @Zazzle.

Have a peek and let me know what you think. Cheers!
