1. Between language and folklore: “To hang out the broom”

We know even less about the origin of idioms than about the origin of individual words. This is natural: words have tangible components: roots, suffixes, consonants, vowels, and so forth, while idioms spring from customs, rites, and general experience. Yet both are apt to travel from land to land and be borrowed. Who was the first to suggest that beating (or flogging) a willing horse is a silly occupation, and who countered it with the idea that beating a dead horse is equally stupid?

4. Halloween 1

I did a revamp of my website and blog this week. I didn’t initially intend to make a thematic (Halloween!) banner, but the idea to take this little witch that I created last year and remake it into a banner came to mind and I like how it turned out. Now my thoughts are on doing that consistently throughout the year. I have done that in the past, but maybe I’ll return to that. It could be fun.

So the new banner is below (and, of course, above).

Below is the initial illustration I reworked the banner from. To the right is a similar little witch that I did for our IFK promo postcard last fall. I still dig the style and all.

6. Illustration Friday ~ Flying

Griezelda-witchlady_grizelda

Lady Grizelda gets a makeover!

The smaller version is one of the first pictures I did when I first started working digitally, two years ago… It’s perfect for the prompt but I just couldn’t put her up in that condition… so here is the new Griselda… along with the original poem that went with her.

Lady Griselda looked at the date
“Good heavens!” she said
“I’m running quite late!”

“The Coveny Sisters have already started!”
So she packed up her tools
and quickly departed.

And just for good measure she mixed up some dust
Then she sprinkled her broom
Chanting “Salem or bust!”
