wasn’t sure if they would punk out in making doc strange look the way he looks in the comics, maybe go for a whole new look instead. glad to see they went classic with some added touches to the overall look. coolest accessory? the cloak of levitation.

It’s a little thing but the fact that they tried to get something like the high collar right fills me with confidence about the whole film. There’s no way you can make the comic version work in the real world but that they wanted to try shows me something.

As someone with little to no interest in the comics character, this is a promising first look.

Reflect on how far we’ve come since those awful first look images of the original X-Men film’s costumes.

How many pages of Amazing 1 and Avengers 1 are simply preview? Tha would really be disapointing if, in the end, those extra size made the reader pay extra for only preview pages.

They’re not preview pages, they’re all original stories. But he’s they’re just acting as preview pages with no real need to not read them and just wait to buy the actual books.

Hey what happened to Superior Iron-Man? Was there resolution to that idea, or is he still ‘as much of a jerk as usual as a result of whatever that crossover series decided’?

ANAD Point One #1 gives you Agents of SHIELD, Carnage, Contest of Champions, Rocket Racoon & Groot, Daredevil and All-New Inhumans.

Amazing Spider-Man #1 gives you separate stories of Web-Warriors (5 pgs), Spider-Man 2099 (5pgs), Silk (5pgs), Spider-Woman (5pgs), and Miles Morales Spider-Man (7 pgs).

Avengers #0 gives you Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, New Avengers, Ultimates, A-Force, and Squadron Supreme.

Out of about 20 titles previewed with this first wave, I was looking at 7 titles that were covered in some form or another by these books (even though I read all of them).

I’m walking away with 3.

I had the same question about Iron Man’s shift from “Superior” to “Invincible;” and I’m really surprised by the thumbs down to Spidey – I thought that was a dynamite first issue, well-written and gorgeous to boot.

The solo titles were all pretty good. Never been a fan of paying for what are essentially previews.

Hey all! Victor here. Finally have phone in hand to comment on the panel. Let’s start with Star Wars.

“Wait! Why’s he starting with the big stuff?” Mainly because unless you’re into Disney Parks and Resorts, the only cool new stuff shown was the information regarding two immersive Star Wars worlds to be built at both Disneyland and Disney World. Besides the info Kyle wrote up top there wasn’t much more to lose your head about. Sure the cast came out, and it’s always a treat to see the man, the myth, the legend known as Harrison Ford. Basically if you’re only about Star Wars The Force Awakens and spent the night outside the Anaheim Convention Center in the hopes of seeing footage—you’d be disappointed. It’s tough to top what happened at SDCC.
So what about Marvel? That’s the stuff. Doctor Strange hasn’t even started filming but they did show art department boards. That kind of downplays it. The visuals they showed really helped to establish the multi-dimensional world approach they’re going for. Even the art pieces showing Strange going on a quest for healing did a lot to make me visualize what the movie could look like. The angle they’re taking is definitely going to make magic and mysticism quite cool. That was especially evident in the final shot which was an animation of Stange releasing mystical energy. The motion reminded me of Ryu’s fireball motion from Street Fighter. I think it took someone like me who has been so-so on a Doctor Strange movie, to “Hey, that looks like it could be pretty cool. Maybe I should pick up some essential issues.”

The main footage was Captain America: Civil War and man was there a lot to enjoy. It Vegas with Cap, Falcon, and Widow out in the field on an op. Falcon gets a pet falcon in Red Falcon, if you will, as a drone that launches from his wings. Red Falcon serves as a scout providing intel to Falcon and the rest. Then cue the action where Cap faces off against Crossbones while Falcon and Widow show of some sweet choreography in taking down the bad dudes. From there Cap gets word on The Winter Soldier and scenes of Bucky remembering Steve Rogers and their friendship. Throughout this you gets cuts to War Machine, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Iron Man as dialogue hinted at Captain America being a vigilante and how people with powers needed to be held responsible. This will likely be kicked off by some death as there was a shot of Cap being a pallbearer at a funeral. The final shots basically had Iron Man, Hawkeye, and a few others lined up across from Cap, Winter Soldier, Widow and Falcon (?). A heck of a who will flinch first scenario broken by “What do we do?” followed by Cap’s “We fight”. Then all running at each other with some quick action and having it end with Hawkeye and Widow in the throes of the fight:
BW “We’re still friends right?”
HE, “Depends on how hard you hit me”
One. More, Thing. Scott Lang waking up from a seat in a van as the door opens. And being an all out fan over Cap to the point of squeezing his muscles and being, well, Paul Rudd. “Thinks for thanking of me. Thanks for thinking of me.”

I’m sure some more moments will come back to me, but it was easy to see why Chris Evans was really excited to show the footage. I was excited because even though there were plenty of characters a la Avengers Age of Ultron, it didn’t feel as grand. So hopefully the Captain America movies will continue to be some of the more interesting movies in the Marvel slate

This is a good creative team, who did some good work together on Wolverine and the X-Men.

I am a bit surprised Aaron has another ongoing at Marvel. He’s now got this, Star Wars, Thor, and Weirdworld (which I believe is ongoing), plus Southern Bastards (which is less than monthly) and whatever consulting/writing work he has for the television adaptation thereof.

I’ve not ever kept up with all of Aaron’s output–is this an increase in his workload? I’m really enjoying the stuff of his I’m reading now, but you’d have to think there’d come a point where the quality would drop off (e.g. Bendis).

Sorry if this qualifies as “concern trolling.”

Good to see the good doctor of the mystic arts getting some love in the form of a new book with the feature film on the horizon. I’m encouraged by what Jason Aaron said here and I love Chris Bachalo’s art, but I hope the sample drawings aren’t indicative of what’s to come in the new comic. Doc with a battle ax, a sword, a bow and arrows and a shield? How pedestrian. Anyone number of characters could be pictured with weapons and defenses like these. The best of Doc’s adventures were always filled with things you couldn’t see anywhere else. Mind-blowing imagination was always on display.

Of course, I could be internet jumping-the-gun here and this is for one story only. But it’s underwhelming that these are the publicity images Marvel is teasing the new series with. And I certainly hope it doesn’t mean we’ll see a sorcerer who’d be more at home with Conan the Barbarian.

I’m looking forward to new Strange tales, not new savage ones.

Please give your articles a second read from another set of eyes. Nothing diminishes credibility (and readability) quite like trying to navigate through all the typos (Ther, movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch nest year, etc.).

Reacting purely to what is being said in the interview, my question would be, if there are repercussions from Strange using his powers, then how can he justify using them? If saving person A means person B dies, then shouldn’t the right thing to do be to simply not use the powers at all?

Before my rant I want to explain one thing. None of what I am about to say should be taken as racist, feminist or any other kind of -ist, but this entire attitude of Marvel is becoming tiresome. Hey, let’s take an established character and make them A.) Black or B.) A Woman. Falling into neither category this is hard for me to say, but I think it’s a cop out that Marvel can’t just make new characters instead to encompass this. They did a new Ms. Marvel, right? This shouldn’t be that hard to do. Just seems like mindless lip service to me.

I think it’s a great choice. Swinton always brings an eerie, otherworldly vibe to her performances. With her casting, the Ancient One has just turned from a cliche into a character.

I’ve always loved Dr. Strange comics, from Ditko on, but the Ancient One was never an original character. He was always a riff on other venerable Asian masters from the pulps and novels of the Twenties, like the lama Chang of Lost Horizon. And since Strange’s creation, there have been plenty of this archetype in TV and movies from Master Po of Kung Fu and Remo Williams’ Chiun to Ken Watanabe’s fake Ra’s Al Ghul in Batman Begins. So I think a fresh start with the Ancient One is definitely in order.

Whitewashing is an issue.

OTOH Tilda Swinton has the chops to play all the roles in a Dr. Strange movie except, maybe, Baron Mordo. A killer Dormammu.

I feel about this the way I did about the Mandarin casting in Iron Man . . . Whitewashing Asian characters bothers me, but the character being whitewashed is a stereotypical trope. I personally know a ton of Asian-American actors who are working hard to break through, but I don’t think they’re too eager to play Fu Manchu/Yellow Peril villains or ancient, incrutable wise men.

So, they are white-washing The Ancient One and trying to cover it by gender-bending the role? Terrible.

Tilda Swinton is awesome though and she is a good fit for the Doctor Strange universe. I just wish that they had found another part for her.

I’m not surprised, because of the current decree that only British actors can play American comic-book heroes. Gotta keep that global audience in mind, you know.

Too bad the movie couldn’t have been made in the ’60s with Vincent Price.

Seriously, I am a bit disappointed by this casting… Bandersnatch is in everything, it’s lazy casting. If ‘t were 5 years ago, and someone would have mentioned this unknown British actor, would the world then still rejoice “perfect casting”? I doubt.

In truth, it’s a role that you can shape in so many ways. Would Leto do a good Strange? Undoubtedly. Could Phoenix? Yes, though it’d be yet a different interpretation. Heck, I could see George Clooney do a good one, or Keanu Reeves (if he’d be allowed to bring it to a dark place. Seriously, watch The Gift to see what he can do).

Or Tom Cruise as someone who has gone deep into the Abyss and stared it down? He knows a thing or two about sects…

it really all comes down to the facial hair , if “batch” can pull that off, it should be fine, and if there is no ‘stache, then it ain’t doctor strange. i don’t know about clooney or reeves playing the part (anything is possible) and vinne price in the 1960’s would have been very interesting, the actor i would have picked for the role would have been daniel day lewis, tho’ he probably wouldn’t go anywhere near playing a comic book character.

Don’t know who this guy is, but I’m hoping that this will be cool. I remember reading. A few great comics in the late 80s/early 90s, but no storyline a really stand out with this character. I’m hoping Marvel knows this and decides to reinvent him while cloth, like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Alas, Edmund Lowe has been dead for decades. He played Chandu the Magician, the character that Stan Lee has cited as the major inspiration for Dr. Strange. And Lowe had a mustache!

He’s played both Khan and Sherlock Holmes. That makes him ‘unknown’???

How much fun will it be to see Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange sharing scenes with Downey’s Tony Stark, probably in Avengers 3? (I’m assuming his Marvel Movie contract will be for more than just one film.)

At least this casting makes more sense than having him play Khan…

This is a safe but solid choice. The best out of all the actors that were said to be in the running for the role.

That said, there were two other actors that kept popping up as suggestions from various commenters on different sites that I came across and this two actors were really inspired suggestions.

Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception, Godzilla) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave, Children Of Men, Serenity).

Either of those actors would have been truly inspired choices for a variety of reasons. The character of Dr. Strange needs a sense of gravitas. Watanabe or Ejiofor could have brought that.

But so can Cumberbatch.

Movie audiences didn’t require heroes to look like teenagers or twenty-somethings in those days. Price would have been acceptable to a lot of people, just as Charlton Heston (44 when PLANET OF THE APES was released) and John Wayne (born in 1907) were still acceptable movie heroes in the ’60s.

Robert Downey Jr. is 49 right now.

As I recall, the Marvel executives thought Downey was too old when he was cast in the first movie. (They might have preferred Justin Timberlake or one of the TWILIGHT kids.) But Jon Favreau wanted an experienced actor, so Marvel grudgingly allowed Downey his career-defining role.

Earlier this year, according to James Gunn, the Marvel honchos thought everyone — especially “the kids” — would hate the ’70s music in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. They apparently wanted the hero to download Beyonce and Kesha from iTunes, which would have dated the movie faster than a tape of ’70s classics.

There are some real mental giants in the Marvel executive suites.

But at least, when Favreau and Gunn said, “No, I want this,” they said “okay.”
