9. Is Marvel’s Relaunch Stumbling Out of the Gate?

ironman3The November sales estimate headlines are all about how the market is up, owing to Dark Knight 3, Vader Down and a metric ton of Marvel’s relaunched #1’s. You expect a certain amount of that. Stunts sell, as long as the publishers don’t over-extend the market for variant covers (and they sure seem aggressive in emphasizing those instead of the content in between the covers). What you’d miss out on if you only read the headlines is that Marvel’s #2 and #3 issues aren’t getting a ton of traction relative to those gaudy #1 sales totals.

11. Review: RED WOLF #1 Isn’t Offensive, Just Boring

55f07e35cb59eMarvel’s All-New All-Different Red Wolf #1, out today, has faced more scrutiny than most books slated for the publisher’s line-wide relaunch.  Written by Nathan Edmondson and drawn by Dalibor Talajic, the book was criticized upon announcement due to the titular character’s design as seen in an All-New All-Different promotional image.  In addition, following Marvel’s announcement of Edmondson […]

19. Red Wolf Stars in First New Solo series in Nearly Four Decades

Marvel already teased the fact that Native American character Red Wolf was on his way to get his own comic book, but today the first images and creative teams have been announced via Mashable. Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow) is writing the brand new series that features covers, design and consulting from Jeffrey Veregge, a Native American artist who recently contributed covers to G.I. Joe from IDW. Dalibor Talajić, recent artist from Secret Wars spin-off comic Master of Kung Fu is drawing the interiors. Jake Thomas will be editing the brand new series starting with Red Wolf #1 -- the first new solo title for the character in several decades. Red Wolf recently spun out of Marvel’s Secret Wars title 1872, an oddball tale that took place in the past. The hero was also in the All-New, All-Different Marvel teaser as seen below, which has allowed for fringe character in the Marvel Universe to remain relevant and receive their own quirky comic books. The series will take place in the American Southwest.

21. Accusations of Bi-Erasure aimed at Axel Alonso and Marvel’s Hercules Set Off Internet Firestorm

22. SDCC ’15: Marvel Announces the First Spider-Man/Deadpool Team Up Ever!

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like for a comic to be composed entirely of one-liners, wonder no more.  This Fall, writer Joe Kelly and artist Ed McGuinnes are teaming up to create the very first Spider-Man/Deadpool crossover EVER.  No further news has been announced at this time, so we can only speculate on whether the world will survive the weight of these heroes’ collective puns.

23. SDCC ’15: Marvel goes BIG; announces SQUIRREL GIRL & BLADE Series, Ms. Marvel Audiobook

During the “Women of Marvel” panel at SDCC today, the House of Ideas announced several new series as a part of their All-New, All-Different relaunch.

When solicits for over 45 titles came out, a large number of fans worried about the fate of one of their favorite characters: Squirrel Girl.  Her newest series had been launched earlier this year to incredible acclaim, but Marvel had not announced the continuation of her title the way they had trumpeted other continuing series like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Gwen.  However, fear not!  The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl will relaunch this October with a new #1.  Writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson will continue their work on the title.

Unbeatable-Squirrel-Girl_688x1044

To add some fuel to the fire of the rumor about Wesley Snipes’ potential return to the role of Blade, Marvel announced a new Blade series at the panel as well.  While a promotional image from the series leaked from Marvel’s retailer panel earlier this weekend, we now have more specifics about the title.  To begin in October, the series will be written by Tim Seeley, drawn by Logan Faerber, and focus on Fallon Grey, a sixteen year old girl who lives in a rural part of Oregon.  She’s a star student and the queen social bee, but her stellar life is suddenly disrupted by an unnamed “terror.  As fearsome supernatural forces hunt Fallon, she’ll come face to face with something even more shocking than the monsters on her tail. Eric Brooks…Blade…her father?! And in each other, they’ll discover the purpose they’ve each been struggling to find.”

In an interesting experiment, Marvel will republish Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal as an audiobook through GraphicAudio.  While GraphicAudio has adapted a number of Marvel prose novels in the past, this will be the first time the company will take a story straight from the comic itself.  This title will be released on August 17th.
