with a USAvengers team book also coming out with more of a youth/different type characters vibe, does this mean we’ll be seeing more classic line-ups in the main stream avengers books, ’cause it seems that most of the characters that marvel was moving heaven and earth to get into the main avengers books seem to be moving on into books of their own.

With Ms. Marvel (who can stretch), Spider-Man (who can become invisible) and Nova (who can fly and fire blasts from his hands) and the new Hulk (strong guy) it’s not The Champions, it’s the new Fantastic Four.

Everybody rightly mocks the leather jackets ‘n big guns look of the 90s, but at least it was a recognizable zeitgeist style. So many of those characters just look blah.

Going by Marvel’s past actions, it means a boatload of #1 issues, plus the renumbering of just about every current Marvel comic.

Your fascination with Ike makes sense. Rich Johnston’s fascination with Ike is odd since his take on him goes from hot to cold depending on the day.

Actually, Disney stock hasn’t been soaring lately. Even though the movie side of the company has been doing well, the issues over ESPN’s profitability has been a major drag on the stock price.

Hot and cold depending on what Ike has done that’s worth reporting on. That’s the problem with facts, they have an irritating way of dictating the story.

A dear friend of mine, also a brown woman, was invited to that conference as well. It’s a high honor and it sounded like an amazing event.

I’ll keep running stories about Ike Perlmutter, Some will be positive. Some will be negative. It all depends on what he gets up to.

My money is on Ike as the culprit. Seems like something obsessive, spiteful Ike would do. He has motive and opportunity. East Coast is his domain. and sources there most likely work for him. As for Arad getting credit lol. I read the Sony/Marvel exchanges in the Sony leaks; when talking about Amazing Spider-Man 2, they imply Arad was probably an idiot that never knew what he was doing.

Perlmutter also gave millions of dollars in support of Drumpf. When BC (I think) broke that story, it got a pretty strong reaction from folks, including some who work for Marvel publishing.

Perhaps that caused enough hassle to have someone decide BC could be fed a new narrative.

Do you Ike Perlmutter personally? Or do you just base your judgment on hearsay and the perceptions of people who might or might not know him, but are nonetheless quoted in articles. How do you know he is obsessive and spiteful? After all, Ike himself NEVER talked or defended himself (a wise thing probably). Could you imagine, that Feige got really fond of having power and that he wanted more and more? Could you imagine that he actually is scheming in the background to contribute or establish the Ike-bad-guy image? You are so easily to manipulate. You just base your judgment on whatever you read in the media. But I am sure Feige is not lamb, after all he was the one who basically back-stabbed Ike after Ike was too uncomfortable for him. Now we have a Marvel studio which is run by Feige and every single movie is produced exclusively by him and by him only! That is going to kill the MCU eventually. Inbreeding, closed systems and dictatorships never end well. “Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. – and my bet is that Feige is lusting power more than Ike. I am sure both men have their issues and perceptions and this conflict should have been handled in a more intelligent way than what Disney came up with. .But one thing is for sure, the real world is not as simple as a comic book where there is a good guy and a villain, even though Feige might see himself as the superhero now who successfully slew the villain.

Do you really think the world is as simple as having a good guy and a bad guy? The real world is NOT a comic book where those lines are so clear. There is more than just black and white, that is why I appreciate Johnston’s article in BC very much. Finally someone who tries to shine some light on the bigger picture and not always simply giving in to the primitive good versus evil scheme. Perlmutter is not the bad guy at all. Neither is Feige, but both have their issues and their perceptions and unfortunately Disney chose the most primitive and stupidest solution to “resolve” the conflict. And because their solution was so unenlightened, we are still discussion it, and the Civil War is still going on. I would love it if you could stop from trying to find a good and a bad guy in this situation, but rather try to give a balanced view, so that people can stop playing the blame game, scapegoating and beating up the one person who has never actually said anything to defend himself, but was labelled because of some “sources” take things out of context, project their own perceptions on to it, or are simply disgruntled like those Disney employees. I am sure the big, bad Ike persona which was created by the media (and maybe Feige himself?!) is not even close to the reality of who Perlmutter is.

Regarding continuity, I haven’t seen “Apocalypse” yet, but “X-Men,” “X2,” and “Days of Future Past” make a nice, coherent little trilogy that allows you to forget the other films.

I haven’t seen Apocalypse yet, but I think that Tony Black makes some of the continuity issues for the franchise more complicated than they need to be (as some of the commenters for his piece explain).

Pietro was the best opportunity to have Magneto form his Brotherhood in that movie, and the whole lack of confidence telling him he was his son… F()c^ that…! No way, so lame… the ending as a SIXTH installment in the sage GLOBAL franchise: dud. I agree w/other reviews that say the whole ‘getting the band together again’s was using up the gist of the span of the film, the ending could had EASILY culminated in several kick ass battles, and the whole geek satisfaction w/your normal ‘consumer’ leaving the theater going -“Wow, Apocalypse is the S+!+, I want to go read comics about him…!” but no dice, and Magneto should had assembled some Brotherhood out of nowhere at one point w/Blob, Mystique, her oracle girlfriend, and Pyro w/Rouge… The fourth Horseman instead of Magneto could had easily been Kitty Pryde, or even Jean Grey -yeah, Jean: point being = regardless of who the fourth horse man could had been besides Magneto, You Do Not Have That Much Destruction And Then Think Just Ending That Guy Apocalypse Is Just Going To Lead To Anything Remotely Resembling Their `90s And Whatever Else Era B.S. -cities were disintegrating, and Nightcrawler is made out to be a ‘b!+(+, still with his ridiculous scars, and meek self pity praying -the comics, the REAL Nightcrawler always had grace, and class, and style, and he had confidence, and was never ever really able to get over people freaking out at him, this actually very civilized person -kind a decent extreme example how how someone from Europe would generally be considered ‘different’, and at the very least ‘alienated’ in most towns and suburbs where most ‘Americans’/consumers live. So, good job on the intro though for Jean and Scott -Scott Summers though should had been in a school for the blind when they first showed him, as he was hiding his ‘disability’/power after he and his brother fell from that plane, stick with the original plot(!) its easy -see how much cooler I could had made this movie… The ending was too ‘ephemeral’ and extreme with the level of destruction that it was anticlimactic -and there should had been Farouk there -maybe he could had been the fourth horseman, and he could had had the class psychic battle vs.. Xavier at the end -w/Jean Grey backing him up channeling the P-force…

So the best thing about these new era pieces is the way they can show the parts of history that had never been part of the comics; Xavier and Eric’s history, and Hand, and Raven’s background… So this could had been a great way to have had the story of Magneto’s kid, Polaris, or even Wanda, and Pietro, and have him freak out about his baby’s’ mamma’s death and some similar shtick that would still work the with sequential mythos =because Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Chris Claremont, Join Byrne, and so on are all really THAT GREAT, and the movies should flow w/them, their story, OUR Mythos… Not a ‘brand’, or some set of metrics, and contract and marketing patter analysis crap weak over destructive ending -the world would still be in the dark ages, especially considering the oil crisis at that time in early 80s we were all coming out of, and everyone was fleeing the decay of the cities into sprawl and then this movie’s level of destruction made the dialog at the end with their ‘required’ levels of dialog completed to ‘tie up emotional and other b.s. plot threads’….

Magnets was SERIOUSLY an act of God in this movie to an extent where everything else made no sense… Like him suddenly joining everyone at the end, and they are all like smiling and ‘meh, let help eachother’… it was just too tie things up that make no sense. After what Magneto did, AND HE IS LIKE ONE OF MY FAV’S YO, like geeking out and all, but PUT A BULLET IN THAT MO’FO’S H E A D yesterday, NOW -he needs to go, he just devastated the entire world, w/ no nukes it is middle ages,… sorry, I GET IT, this is a movie, but after all those movies there could had been character moments that were not just regurgitating the same plot threads and brand images that actors have required in their contracts and the producers will make money of the merchandising and licensing so the ending was just ‘fill’…

FOX: It is OK to build upon past stories now, you have enough movies and merchandising crap that you can have your plots and characters flow into NEW STORIES AND BETTER MOVIE ENDINGS now… PLEASE

Captain American has not been evil before. He’s been brainwashed, manipulated, impersonated and mistaken. He’s never been evil. Or least he never was when I was reading Marvel Comics, which admittedly stopped back in the early to mid 2000s. So I guess I can’t speak to much after that or about any continuity changes made that would explain how, for example, Hydra would even have been a thing in 1930s/40s America since it was actually created by Baron Strucker in World War II-era Japan.

And for anyone who doesn’t think this whole thing is stupid and lame, what do you think the reaction would be if “The Walking Dead” came out with an episode this fall where they revealed that Rick Grimes has secretly been the scientist responsible for the zombie plague all along?

Totally agree with MIke’s comment (above)..

As a writer, I like to think that if I were given the awesome privilege of writing a story for a character who has been around for 70+ years or more, I wouldn’t take the opportunity to totally screw up who he is and what he’s about. That is what bothers me the most. They sacrificed Cap’s character and his legacy for the sake of a stupid story that will “get people talking!” and supposedly make them money.

Holy fuck, there is no sacrificing of legacy. It’s obviously going to be a fakeout. Have you brain donors read a comic before?

It’s ridiculous for people to get angry over what is obviously a gimmick designed to get media attention and (hopefully) beef up sales. Didn’t we learn from the “death of Superman” (and later the “death of Captain America”) not to take these “shocking” twists seriously?

Mike is utterly correct. Cap was brainwashed in that Lee-Kirby story where he salutes Hitler. I stopped reading Captain America in 1996 (after Rob Liefeld’s first issue), so I can’t speak to the last 20 years of Cap. But the character was never evil when I was reading the book.

Kirby’s Cap-as-Nazi story was drawn in 1965, in the middle of the Civil Rights movement, when racial hatred was at a much greater high than it is now, with much greater repercussion than there are now.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t be outraged by that recent panel if they want to be outraged, but why aren’t they equally (or more!) outraged by the Kirby panel? At that point the Holocaust was only slightly further in the past than 9/11 is to us now.

In the 15ish years I’ve been a comic book internet human, I don’t remember seeing people incensed about a comic book while invoking so much… I dunno, ethical high ground? It’s a bit surreal. Fun to see people argue it, though!

I really love how Marvel’s marketing bit them on the ass this time. But it’s also one of those any press = good press sorta things, I guess.

Still, it’s been a while since they had this kind of backlash! Probably since the Jemas days, right? Or maybe Joe Q’s Spider-Divorce was like this too and I’m not remembering it well.

For what it is worth (little?) we sold roughly 4x the copies of REBIRTH on Wednesday than we did of the new CAPTAIN AMERICA, so I’m not sure that this is an accurate hot take.

I think the writer forgets that Captain America just had a worldwide blockbuster success in the cinemas, and people know him from not just the comic books – who have also been joining in this discussion. Of course it will seem like it’s more popular, when Rebirth only really effects long time DC fans.

I think what everyone else is forgetting is that the issue you’re all talking about with the Hitler salute panel, is in tales #67. The cover for that story SETS UP the premise, doesn’t leave it till the end, and the cliffhanger, so to speak, is not on the topic of HOW this could be the case, because it is completely explained within the pages of the book, but how Bucky is going to rescue Cap. A completely different problem. No one tricked anyone, in fact the COVER was the selling point – when covers were used to tease the inside of a book, not just look pretty.

I don’t buy DC’s love and optimism because I feel that their efforts are empty and hollow. It’s a show, and it’s a show that they aren’t even very earnest about.

I also don’t buy Marvel’s kayfabe in telling us “Yeah, Cap’s evil, always was,” but I don’t know why kayfabe is necessary at all.

Like, actual top-tier creators? Cause there are very few of those, and most are busy doing creator-owned work. I want to believe that Marvel has top-tier creators ready to go, but it seems unlikely. Feels like when they call Tom Raney an “all-star artist” or Cullen Bunn a “fan-favorite writer”

I want to see a Marvel Then! event where characters from the Timely and Atlas eras threaten to take back the company from everyone who came post-1961. “We were here first!”

It’s always slightly depressing to hear Marvel shilling their “rich history” as a selling point when their concept of a shared universe is so thin these days that even writers working on the same characters don’t coordinate, dead characters come back with no explanation (and this was happening before SW), and no one seems to know when books take place in relation to each other.

Decision 2016: Everybody Sucks.

They seem to have some big, fundamental change for the character every 2 years or so.
Was that always the case? Where they doing this in the 60s-90s?

Back in the 50s and 60s DC would often do stories like this. The covers showing Superman or Batman betraying their friends or country, only for the whole thing to be revealed as a deception designed to capture a villain. Back then, the story would wrap up in a single issue, and next month you’d get another adventure about the hero you were paying for.

Today, if you pick up a random superhero comic, you might find yourself in the middle of one of these story lines — trapped there for months and months to come. Or worse, you might pick up an issue of any given superhero title only to learn that the hero has been “dead” for months, and you’re actually reading about some replacement person wearing a similar costume (and will be for many months to come).

I guess some readers like these stories, but just as obviously, some readers will walk away and never return. Marvel and DC have been able to count me in that second group for a long time, and gimmicks like these keep me away (fortunately, there’s a TON of great stuff happening elsewhere in comics). Plots may not be irreversible, but lost readers seem to be.

I sometimes wonder if the writers and editors aren’t working for Hydra. It’s incredible that the current Hollywood people actually seem to “get” these Marvel characters better than the current batch comics creators do (DC characters seem to be a mystery to both parties these days).

Having been digging through Englehart’s run lately, I can say “Yeah, pretty much.” Remember the Secret Empire (headed by EVIL RICHARD NIXON!!!), newly-revived Peggy Carter with the fragile psyche, and Nomad, to say nothing of his on-again off-again bromance with Falcon? All within the span of a year? Maybe it seemed like more time, just because they were taking down villains of the moment every ish or two. This current issue reads to me like a story beat, and I’m right entertained and looking forward to more of Spencer’s Steve Rogers; the media blitz around it seems kind of ridiculous, though.

amazes me that the mainstream media cares about shit like this. Don’t these organizations have anyone on staff who actually reads comics and can be like “this is a frigging non-story fake out that will be resolved within six issues and never referenced again”

Or not. Definitely not something I’m putting $5 down for.

Then nothing matters and if nothing matters, why are you reading/watching it?

sigh. Is Marvel really this desperate? they need to steal a meaningless hedline. This is aimed at people like me, who claim not to care about this superhero bullshit anymore. Of course, hearing this just makes my blood boil.

I predict that a recantation of Spenser-Cap speedier than the one that attended the debacle of the Spider-Clone saga.

The one thing I can say unequivocally is: This is why I’m not buying a lot of Marvel comics these days.

The fact you had any expectations at all for this drivel is more telling than anything in this “review.”

Hmmm… well, that IS interesting. I wonder if Marvel will pull out of SDCC to a smaller presence again? I have to admit, as a company move it makes sense. Why compete with all the other content when they can beat everyone to the punch less than a week earlier (since SDCC starts on Wednesday).

And who from Marvel wants to fly out to one show, fly back for a couple days, and then fly back out for the next one? Or would the hotel fare be cheaper to have them stay there? It probably would be for that many days versus a cross country flight, but who wants to leave their families for two weeks for it?

Most of the rank and file at Marvel would likely just go to SDCC, but the higher level folks attending both would cause a budgetary nightmare for Ike Perlmutter….

I bet you don’t see much crossover between the show, that’s for sure. maybe just Axel Alonso and Joe Quesada…

1) This allows Disney to own the news cycle the week before CCI.

2) Disney can fly in talent ONCE, having them appear at D23 and CCI.

3) Disney will still have programming at CCI. They dropped the mic in Hall H last year with Star Wars. Disney only needs to do that ONCE to “win” Comic-Con each year.

4) Disney controls these events. Remember the cast announcements at the El Capitan? Anything Disney does, anywhere, will garner publicity. They don’t need CCI.

5) Marvel won’t give up space at CCI. That many people on the show floor equals lots of activations buzz, and publicity.

6) Expect Warner Brothers or another big media conglomerate to rent out nearby hotel space and stage a parallel mini-con. The corporation can control hours, programming, access… at probably a similar cost to renting a nearby warehouse.

7) Disney rakes in the revenue with D23. Almost all of it. It’s an extension of the theme park, with the gift shop INSIDE the attraction.

8) Hoo BOY! Will WonderCon 2018 be held in Los Angeles? Both WonderCon and D23 are held in the Anaheim Convention Center. Neither will be using the new space (which goes online in Fall 2017), not that either needs more space.

9) Hall D, where the theater was at D23 last year, seats 15,000 in a theater configuration. Compare to 6,130 at Hall H in San Diego.
