According to publisher promotional materials, Ghosts, the new graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier will have a 500,000 copy first printing. I believe this is the biggest first printing ever for a pure graphic novel. (not counting Wimpy Kid this time.) In other words, Raina rules! We finally have a legit home grown best selling cartoonist […]

Well, it appears I was a bit overoptimistic when I suggested that Hastings, the bookstore chain that just announced as Chapter 11 bankruptcy, owed Diamond less than $200,000. According to ICv2 got the updated list of creditors, it’s a LOT more and Funko, the designer toy chain, is in for more than $2 million: $2,589,509 […]

Speaking of Preacher, this headline hardly constitutes a shocking surprise, but checking Amazon’s graphic novel best sellers list , Preacher Volume #1 is now the #2 seller (and #124 book overall) just behind the Kindle edition of The Hedge Knight, a Song of Fire and Ice spinoff based on a George R. R. Martin novel. […]

By John Jackson Miller (reprinted with permission from Comichron) There have been many Black Panther series over the years from Marvel, but the title has never been one to appear near the top of the sales charts. In April, the new series from Ta-Nahisi Coatesand Brian Stelfreeze not only was the comic book most ordered […]

Marvel remained the #1 publisher accoridng to sales figures just released by Diamond, but they lost some of their dollar share from February, as Boom gained a little market share. Boom’s big win was a #2 slot on the periodical chart for the first issue of their surprise hit Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers […]

Greetings, sales charts fans! It's time once again to look at DC's sales figures.
Things were bad for DC in January. How bad? With records going back to March 2003, DC had its second worst average sales on record of 21,845, just barely beating the March 2009 low point of 21,792. The Vertigo line had its lowest average sales on record by far: 6,832, beating the previous average low of 7,055 in March 2015. And the median sales for both lines was even lower: 24,624 & 5,802 respectively.
DC shipped twenty fewer comics in January as compared to December (74 versus 94). Two titles not shipping in January were two of DC's top sellers, Dark Knight III and Justice League. They moved a total estimated 1,616,524 comic units in January, compared to 2,640,519 in December, a difference of over a million units!

Federico Salvan of the Italian comics news site Manga Forever dropped me a line to alert me to a retailer survey on the state of Italian comics . It’s in Italian, of course, but they surveyed 31 local comics shops out of about 180 in Italy, so it’s a somewhat statistically significant survey. I’ve asked […]

The top 300 comics charts are out for January, and John Jackson Miller has his monthly analysis which reveals that graphic novels were heavily discounted in January, perhaps accounting for part of the fall in sales. He also points out something very important which I think a lot of people don’t remember – because they […]

There were a lot of drops in January's sales charts -- however, some of them may not have been as steep as they seem. Marvel's domination of DC increased in January sales figures just released by Diamond, as DC's market share was exactly half of Marvel's. Ouch. Holdin' on for a Rebirth, alright.

Oh speaking of Amazon, I didn't realize that they have sub categories in all their best seller list now. Thus you can not only see what's selling in the main graphic novel category (answer: coloring books) but in more than a dozen subcategories, such as Manga, Romance Manga, Superheroes and How to Create Comics and Manga. And when you click on some of them, like Publishers, you get sales charts for the top 7 or 8 publishers in one click. (Can you feel teh excitement??!!??)
When you click on Graphic novels you get a Russian nested doll of genre categories, all the way down to zombies.

Dave, I’d match HAL JORDAN to GL, and the LanternS book to GLC, personally — GL was always the Hal title, and GLC the “Not Hal”
Interesting is the five-years-ago figures (from just before the New 52 started) versus now. So in spite of all the “darker and edgier” New 52 revamps, “DC You,” “Convergence,” and other changes, the only characters to see a rise in sales figures since then are Batman (who’d probably sell well anyway), Superman, Batgirl, Constantine, and… Scooby-Doo? Interesting that in sales growth percentages, Scoob and the gang are one of DC’s main successes…
Scooby Doo Apocalypse was a lot better than I could imagine. It inspired me to buy the other similar books. Nice surprise in fun and entertaining reading
I’m really surprised by Unfollow. It’s a great book, full of mystery, intrigue, and plenty of weirdness! It’s a perfect Vertigo title! Why is no one buying this thing?
Nahan: bad marketing strategies. I probably would have been interested but no interior art was visible in the Previews (I think), price of the vertigo floppy was upped 33% just before and they didn’t made any effort on the price of the first paperback as they used to.
And launching a serie demanding such a very long run of issued to be correctly mamanged (the counter can’t drop from 140 to 10 in 2 issues) at a time were any new launch making it past issue 12 is a miracle was perhaps a little too risky.
Nathan: I’m buying it. And it is the perfect Vertigo title. It reminds me of Air by Wilson & Perker from a few years back, gives me that same feeling of those cool little books poking their heads out between Sandman and Preacher and Animal Man and Fables, you know? That…Vertigo feeling…mmm…
