Well, I expected as much which is why I never got the reaction to it. I hate being all “these people didn’t read the comic/don’t read comics” but it’s such an obvious issue #1 and Marvel cliffhanger play that of course it’d be revealed if not in issue 2 at least 4 what’s really going on. All of that makes me think it’s now even more in poor tase mainly because Spencer and Co. did such a bad job convincingly lying about it.

Maybe the problem is not the creators or the editors but the legion of “fans” and “journalists” that overanalyze and ruin everything on the internet. You know what’s kinda fun? Just reading comics. With no one else’s commentary. The internet appears to be full of those three annoying guys at the comic shop that I hated so much as a kid. They had opinions on everything, ruined everything, and never fucking left.

I hope that was worth all the trivializing of Jewish people for.

If this is the best story they could come up with, it’s no wonder comic sales are awful.

Well its not like he was getting any good projects for Marvel’s cosmic stuff and his latest stuff (Guardians of Infinity) feels a bit like those two miniseries after Thanos Imperative – Dan just going thru motions.

Guardians of Infinity and the latest Hercules series have been pretty bad. Hercules is the first comic in a long time I’ve quit reading mid-issue. (Some god of technology showed up and he spoke like a text message and that was the last straw.)

I assume that this Exclusive contract means like always “do not work for Marvel” and that Abnett will continue his 2000AD work.

Heh, maybe Johns’ checks will go for more than they’re worth on eBay. Seems like the speculator market is vibrant enough nowadays that I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this.

Brian K. Vaughan made this offer with Y The Last Man when it first came out. I think he got one issue returned, torn in half.

I predict the main book launching at around 80k copies, and steadily dropping. Jim Lee will draw even fewer issues than he is currently planning to do, and the book will quickly slip to around 30k. The one-shots will sell around 25-35k each, with 35k being an absolute max.

Nothing says “stuck in the past” to me like people hung up on wanting to bring back briefs. But then, I’ve also always been a “no cape” person even before The Incredibles.

Is it sad that today’s superhero fan can make exception for superpowers but can’t get past the red undies or a cape?

‘Realism’ is a fickle thing.

I think it’s still worth noting that Golden Age superheroes wore trunks over tights like acrobats or circus performers. Not wearing the trunks would be… very revealing for a man. I guess we’re now so far from Superman’s original cultural context that most people are incapable of seeing his old costume as anything but “underwear on the outside.”

For what it’s worth, I think Derenick’s turnaround here looks a lot better than the cover by Janin released previously. Maybe it’s just that he used a lot more ink for shading, so the overall impression isn’t such a blue onesie.

I agree with Tim. Whenever anyone tries to “fix” Superman, they tend to break him even more.

Superman, to me, is a cartoon character, and changing his costume so drastically is kind of like getting rid of Bugs Bunny’s ears. Bugs has had many designs over the years but nobody has ditched the ears.

Superman is an old-fashioned character – he’s the guy superheroes are named after! – so his costume should have an old-hat feel. And Kate it’s not about being “hung up” on it – the red trunks aren’t going to make me read the lousy Super-books either way. But the traditional costume had a very simple red-blue-yellow rhythm that worked well and endured for decades, and tinkering with it, uh, has *not* resulted in any kind of successful, enduring looks.

Could maybe Jim Lee not design the new costumes on any iconic characters? Seriously, they just look cheesy as hell.

I can believe a man can fly before I can believe a man in American society would wear the trunks. It’s not about science, it’s about what the trunks look like to an observer. Arguably, he could have one of those frilly Victorian collars, since what he wears apparently doesn’t matter, right?

It does matter. He’s an icon. What he wears is practically synonymous with who he is. More people wear Superman merchandise than have ever read a comic book.

If red underoos don’t look realistic, then don’t fucking draw him in a realistic style. Pretty simple.

I don’t get it – doesn’t DC already have a mature readers imprint (Vertigo)? So why not tap Way to rejuvenate it instead of a whole new imprint? All the PR for YA right now, you wish it was for Vertigo, that would’ve been amazing, hasn’t been the same since Karen Berger left. Like Berger, Way clearly has a vision for his imprint, feels like a missed op for Vertigo, esp when the YA books to me feel like the vibe of those early Vertigo books.

My initial reaction to this was “Deja-Vurtigo” … which I think is a good argument for not doing this under the Vertigo imprint. Off-beat superheroes for grown-up readers is what Vertigo was, and dragging the imprint back to DC’s superhero universe would undermine what they’re trying to do with it now. It would say that trying to build a library of original stand-alone fiction wasn’t working, and that they had to rewind the clock to 1993 when Vertigo was doing it “right”.

I think the idea of a branch from the DCU written for readers who are ready for something different from the usual spandex punchfests they grew up with is a worthwhile idea. Vertigo was a great stepping stone for me in the mid-1990s. Re-developing a “mature readers” wing for the DCU might also open up a little more freedom in the main line for material that appeals to younger readers (though I realize I’m probably just being pollyanna on that point… it doesn’t seem to be an audience that DC Entertainment is really interested in cultivating).

Kinda curious about how this is different from what they were already doing, which was selling Image comics on their Web site. Does this allow for the 12-issue pre-pay like a traditional magazine subscription?

Much as I like seeing Felicity be more than the girlfriend/IT gal, I can’t help thinking it would be harder for the writers to work her into the episodes if she’s not on Team Arrow. Team Arrow has been fairly even with Felicity, Thea, and Laurel representing women and Ollie and Diggle representing men. If you swap out Felicity for Curtis, the dynamic swings back to the guys. So I have mixed feelings about this, though I do want Curtis to become Mr. Terrific sooner rather than later.

On the one hand, I like Kellums’s Curtis Holt, so seeing more of him on the show is a good thing.

On the other hand – I assume given last week’s episode this means more “relationship problems” for the show – this time between Holt and his husband. Which, frankly, this show does not need. At all.

On the gripping hand – this might mean that they fridge his husband in order to give him something horrible to happen in his life. Which also this show does not need.

What this show needs more of is superheroes defeating robot bees with trick arrows.

Note, that Mignola didn’t reveal anything new about Hellboy appearing in B.P.R.D. but it’s actually a series that has been coming out since I think late 2014. The series each get titled after the year they take place in, so first there was Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1952 and coming out now is Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1953.

So basically Mignola has a gap of time between the 1950’s to the 1990’s when the Hellboy comic first started to fill in new stories with the character.
