Elephant Day 2015 Illustration |
I love drawing elephants! At one point, I had way too many elephants in my portfolio, but recently I realized that there are none now. I'll have to remedy that situation.
I've been able to fit some fun creative playtime into my week. I made a small collage painting (you can view the video
here). I doodled in my sketchbook. Something I don't usually do, but I was inspired by the
Sketchbook Explorations class by Lisa Congdon on Creativebug.
Here's a little snippet from a work in progress I finished up this week.

Snippet from a work in progress |
With the help of my mom, husband, and son, I finally got this quilt basted. Now I'm waiting on the elves to come and quilt it for me. The fabric is by
BariJ.
I hope you've had a creative week also!
I've gotten a little behind with #Inktober, but that's ok. I'm doing it for fun, so no harm.
Last night I had so many ideas! I love it when that happens.
I have a spiffy new sketchbook from my birthday that I'm using. (Thank you
Tracy!)
My St. Louis is showing. Go Cards!

Autumn! My favorite time of the year!
I’m not exactly what you would call a football fan, although I’m trying this year. And by trying I mean learning what a down is… yeah, I’m that behind.
I am, however, very excited about by the prospect of cooler temps and therefore many forays into the kitchen to attack new recipes.
Oh, and Halloween! Did I mention Halloween?

“Does this tail make my butt look big?” Matilda queried the patient sales squirrel.
This is what popped into my fevered mind when I saw the Illustration Friday word of the week was “tail.”
Also, just wanted to mention that I’m getting some pretty cool ideas brewing for PiBoIdMo. A little excited.
Well, I may be falling slightly behind, but my fellow SkADaMoers are kicking some serious squirrel butt over here.
Polly ‘Possum is desperately searching for a new place to call home before her babies come! As Polly explores different real estate options, author Marianne Berkes and illustrator Rebecca Dickinson creatively sneak in a little lesson on diurnal and nocturnal animals as well as various types of forest-living animal dwellings. Berkes keeps readers continually anxious as Polly repeatedly finds something wrong with each home she comes across. Will she ever find a place in time?
You too can take part in the search with this Anybody Home? inspired scavenger hunt! Simply print out this flyer, grab a pen, and head outside to check off each item on the list. Be ready for some obstacles just like Polly had during her search. Play by yourself or take on the challenge with a group of friends, but don’t wander too far from home! The list includes items such as a bird’s nest, a beaver’s dam and a squirrel. Also, try to think of additional items to find not on the list. Once everything that you found has been accounted for, show off your scavenging skills to your parents and teachers!

A slight re-working of an old illustration. I dropped the temperature on the thermometer and added his breath-cloud. Or whatever that’s called.

Below is a recent spread I did for the June 2012 issue of Clubhouse Jr. magazine. The colors came out so vibrant on the printed page! Everything is digital. I’m always amazed at how “real” it looks in the end.
Below: Some roughs for the layout. The woman went through a lot of tweaking to get her right. Some last minute things were to add squirrels hanging off the lettering. Gotta love that you can do that when you work digitally. : )

These guys are a snippet from a project I just finished up. I love drawing squirrels. And beavers. and birds. Those seem to be my most favored animals to draw. What are your favorite animals to draw?

Butter roasted nut…….. Check! Oh yes… but the clincher was, the “Pilgrim in a Box” costume he ordered from “The Festive Squirrel’ catalog. Sigmund was sure that he was a shoe in for the title of Harvest King this year!

On a tight deadline, sketching for a client caused me to miss my SkADaMo sketch. But I’m not complaining!
Clients… good!
Anywho, quite a long time ago my friend Michel suggested the idea of sketching gangster squirrels after a discussion on Facebook about… gangster squirrels. Loved the idea, but for some reason it took until now to do it.
So, in an effort to make up for the lost day, and because I wasn’t sure if Michel meant gansta or gangster I decided to do both.
Which squirrel would be scarier to meet in a dark alley?
You decide.
I had the day off today. Oh Joy!
I spent time cleaning my messy studio. Oh joy!
And then I made myself take a little time to paint.
BIG joy in my heart to make art again.
5" x 5" for my new "Teasers" series.

As I mentioned previously, I thought I might change out my banner to fit the season/holiday. And so I did. I used this squirrel that I drew last year (below) for another promotional.
He got incorporated in my new banner (below and above), as well as my Twitter page.
And so, as fall becomes winter, I will change ‘er up yet again. So puh-leeez keep on coming back to check out the (more frequent!) changes and updates!
Whenever possible, hibernate with your best friend :)
A little something from the archives until I find time to make new art.
Happy Autumn!

Meet Short-T, my favorite squirrel! She has a short tail (hence the name) and a white puff on the end of it! Even if you dislike squirrels, don't you think she's rather cute?
Hold on, I have an itch....aaaaah, ooooh. Better!
I think her tail is short because she's been caught before. I mean, she's not the smartest squirrel in some ways. Emma nearly caught her the other day because she came down the tree and walked right up to her! Emma was nearly out of her mind!
In other ways I think she may be VERY smart because she's been around for a long time. She's just a risk-taker I guess. I just adore her!

So appropriate for the fall season! You are so talented!
Good on you for trying to learn! 6 yrs of my kids in the pep band, and I still don’t get it!
