Spruced Up

…and then, as if by magic, Bruce Sprucington Treeworthy wobbled impossibly into a stately bow.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Looks like we have a few masochists joining HoHoDooDa this year. Below are the names and links of said participants (at least any who have left their name and link to where they are posting their doodles, in the comments here.) If I’ve missed anyone or your link is not working or any other proof of my heinous lack of organizational skills, please let me know and I’ll do my best to fix it.

Let’s get doodling!

RACE AGAINST TIME

Despite strenuous training and conditioning, Murgatroid found it difficult to beat the clock.

The Illustration Friday theme for this week is “Time.” So, since it is 11:00 pm on Thursday, with only an hour  left to post… time is running out!

card-shark450-1

Didn’t get a doodle done today because I was finishing up my holiday cards. (Yeah, it’s tradition to be this late, thank you very much!)

So although it’s a bit of a cheat I decided to repost this from a couple of years ago. Thought it might be appropriate.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I love holiday cards. I love getting them, but most of all I like making them.

At least it starts out that way.

There’s the initial concept. Fun!

Sketching it up. Fun!

Drawing, painting, tweaking. Fun! Fun! Fun!

But then, there is the whole standing in line at the post office because I absolutely must have those special snowman stamps.

Followed by an attempt at addressing the cards and the subsequent admitting to people that I wrote their address on a scrap piece of paper last year and my cat batted it under the couch and apparently a spider drug it away to it’s nest, so could you pleeeeeeease give me your address for the fifteenth time… and I promise I’ll key it safely into my iPhone this time!

Couple that with the fact that I waited until pretty much the last minute, even though I promised last year and the year before that and the year… ok, the past ten years that I would start in August.

Before you know it, I’ve got a holiday card meltdown on my hands.

Does any of this sound familiar? Am I alone with this?

Anywho, fun? Not so much.

But despite the griping and moaning, after all is said and done, the truth is, it’s just not Christmas until I’ve sent off all my cards and, of course, I receive that very first card in the mail, be it Christmas, Hanukkah or Festivus (I’m still waiting for my first Kwanza card.)

I just love holiday cards!

It’s tradition! Every bit of it, from fun to meltdown and I hope it never goes away!

Now get yer elfin shoes over here to see what the other doodlers have in store for you!

23. Poets Love Puns

Both of my daughters, pictured above, enjoy my crazy sense of humor, including puns. I have discovered through the years that many writers, especially poets, relish puns, and it makes perfect sense--since poets love playing with words:

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'llserve you, but don't start anything."

3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.  0 Comments on Poets Love Puns as of 12/7/2011 3:42:00 PM

24. Book Review- Pop Culture: Politics, Puns and Poohbutt from a Liberal Stay-At-Home Dad

popculturecover 300x300 Book Review Pop Culture: Politics, Puns and Poohbutt from a Liberal Stay At Home DadPop Culture: Politics, Puns, and Poohbutt from a Liberal Stay-at-Home Dad by Bill Campbell

Reviewed by: James Rohl

About the author:

Bill Campbell is the author of two novels, Sunshine Patriots and My Booty Novel. He has also been a music critic and published his own zine, Contraband and a music trade publication, CD Revolutions. Currently, he lives in the DC area (missing his beloved Cleveland Park) with his wife and daughter.

About the book:

Two years ago, Bill Campbell (author of My Booty Novel and Sunshine Patriots) decided to stay home with his newborn daughter and write a new novel. Of course, as every parent can guess, it didn’t quite work out that way. As “Poohbutt” went from crawling to taking her first steps and as presidential politics turned into one historic election, Bill turned the chaos around him into an iconoclastic, incendiary blog, Tome of the Unknown Writer. Pop Culture compiles the best that the blog has to offer into an entertaining, witty collection that will have you laughing out loud and loving the day Poohbutt had her first solid meal.

My take on the book:

After deciding to stay at home with his new daughter, affectionately named Poohbutt, and write a novel Bill Campbell became so worked up over the news coverage of Obama playing the ‘Race Card’ in the 2008 Presidential Election that he created a blog and wrote a response. That response starts this collection of essays. Along with that first post, originally posted on his blog Tome of the Unknown Writer, Campbell goes on to cover a wide range of topics from politics to the zenith of the hip hop in the 80′s, parenting to pop culture and he does it with wit and candor and an unmistaken powerful voice.

The beauty of this book is that you can pick an choose where to start and stop, if you get your fill of the politics you can move into the hilarious stories of Poohbutt, his daughter he is raising as a stay at home dad. After a story or two on parenting you can move right back into an essay like Cold Case: The Hip Hop Saga where he pictures what the CBS show would do with unsolved rap murders. Politics are always close by in these essays and it is where Campbell shines. If you are wary of too much politics in your daddy blog than this is one to stay away from but I found his posts interesting, enlightening, and always entertaining.

25. Mr. Putney’s Quacking Dog: Word Play Fun

51Yx23K0NvL

Mr. Putney’s Quacking Dog by Jon Agee

I love puns.  Frankly, I couldn’t have groan up in my family without loving them.  Winking smile  So this book is write up my alley!  Mr. Putney has a lot of animal friends, but you have to guess their names.  The word play is a combination of illustrations and words with half of the joke coming from the text and half from the pictures.  Some of the word play is easier than others, but all is amusing and some will have you laughing out loud.  This book would be a stitch with a group of kids who enjoy reading and words.  In fact, it would make a great basis of an art project or for a writing project to create their own puns.

Agee’s illustrations are in his signature style.  Outlined in thick black lines, they are disarmingly simple and filled with a sly humor.  An ideal companion to the book’s concept, they add appeal to the word play.  Mr. Putney is a straight-laced character whose reactions are satisfying and funny as he deals with each of the unique animals in the book.  There is a certain delight in seeing him doused, thrown into the air, or just shocked by a loud noise.

Get this into the hands of kids who love guessing games and word play.  Or just into the hands of any punny folks you know.  Appropriate for ages 5-8.

Reviewed from library copy.
