2. “Clown”: The KL-series pauses for a while

Those who have followed this series will remember that English kl-words form a loose fraternity of clinging, clinking, and clotted-cluttered things. Clover, cloth, clod, cloud, and clout have figured prominently in the story.

7. Pages 11 and 12 of the Sketchbook Project 2011

Let’s face it… clowns can be scary!

I’ll bet I’m not the only one that found this scene scary in The Wizard of Oz! The book and the movie were both frightening and delightful, which makes it such a great memory for so many people!

8. BLOG TOUR (13) Princess Clown Workshop Ideas

Princess Clown
written by Sheryl Gwyther
illustrated by Sian Naylor
Blake Education Pty Ltd Australia (2010)
Gigglers Blue Set 2

Princess Clown is a chapter book for 7-8 year olds. It's the story of Belle, a princess who wants more than anything to be a clown. But the trouble is, she's supposed to act like a real princess. When her mother, the queen, frowns at Belle for wearing a red nose, Belle observes, 'Nobody is ever any fun around this castle.'
And it's true, it seems poor Princess Belle can never do anything right. Then, Belle does the one thing that no one else could do. She makes Prince Alan laugh.

This delightful story lends itself to a variety of workshopping possibilities: (1) following a maze (In a full sized version you may like to include more guiding illustrations!); (2) various sequencing tasks; and (3) an opportunity to act out the story. I have chosen the first two to help children internalise the sequence of the story before venturing into acting it out.
...Princess Clown is perfectly suited to being acted out as a classroom play. For example, apart from the main characters, there could be an endless number of courtiers and maids with non-speaking parts who might imitate the stance or facial expressions of the other characters.

14. Ten Things Not to Say to a Possessed Clown

Image via Wikipedia

Clowns are fun. We laugh and are amused by their antics. However, we are frightened by clowns that are evil or possessed. Here are ten things that you should not say to a possessed clown:

1.   You have great makeup. I especially like your red teeth. They’re so colorful.

2.   Would you like to have dinner at our house? Why are you looking at me like I’m a piece of meat?

3.   Will you quit growling. It’s not nice to scream bloody murder. Come on, lighten up.

4.   Did you say I’m smart? I see. You said that you’d like a piece of my heart.

5.   Why are you juggling chainsaws?

6.   Please don’t spray seltzer water at me. I see. It’s not seltzer water. It’s blood.

7.   What do you look like when you wipe off your makeup? I see. You look like a Zombie.

8.   Why do you wear such big shoes? I see. It’s to hide your hairy, curled up feet.

9.   Can I be in your act? I see. You’ll perform magic and saw me in half.

10.  Are you married? I see. Your wife has flaming red hair, a bright red nose, and a ghoulish white face.

15. Checking in Again...

Well, here it is - the dreaded post without an illustration to go with it (gasp). I had high hopes for lots of art time over summer, but that hasn't been the case. Any free time has gone to selling the house and related home improvements and, now, sorting through things and moving to the new house next month. Oh well...

But, I wanted to check in and let you know I'm still here. And, I'm determined to do something in the sketchbook. I'll be back with a visual soon!

Ok ok! I just can't leave this without an image. So, here's a little something from the past. I just love the way the texture from the paper gave the cloak such weight in this drawing. It was an unexpected discovery. Overall, a fun doodle when I was doing it.

21. Update!

Last week I posted an illustration of a vulture in a pinstripe suit. It accompanied a newspaper article in which the readers were asked what they thought a suitable punishment would be for the bankers accused of messing up the world economy.
The verdict by the readers: force them to come to work in a clown-suit.

Jeff I guess this one doesn't count for the chicken challenge, does it?

22. Next in the Series...

As I mentioned before, I'm taking an illustration "class" at the local city college. There's not really instruction - it's more about pursuing our own projects and bouncing ideas off of each other.

The paintings I shared recently were studies done for my project. Part of my goal is to practice working with acrylics while creating a sort of memoir. The idea sprung from the fact that my oldest just turned 13, which made me think of when I was that age...and the series of decisions (good and poor) that followed. Through the illustration of single words, the series will reflect where I was around that age, the various stages and struggles that I passed through the following years, and will end at the point I am fast approaching - when my own child will have to step out and face those same struggles and decisions. You hope they won't make the same mistakes!

One neat thing is that I went through some old drawings from my late teens (early college days) and found a couple that would be great for some of the words I chose to illustrate (shown above). I like that I can take something from the actual time period I want to represent. The picture shown here was done over 20 years ago (obviously before I started working with a much wider tonal range). I will pull from it and tweak it a bit to illustrate the next word/stage - "Lure."

STRANGERS
(a silent play with no words spoken whatsoever)
By Eleanor Tylbor

GUY1 walks across the stage and is approached by GUY2.

GUY1 waves at GUY2 but GUY2 doesn't wave back.

GUY1 waves at GUY2 again, smiling.

GUY2 ignores him and turns his head sideways.

GUY1 rushes over to him and taps him on the shoulder, forcing GUY2 to acknowledge his presence

GUY2 turns to face him, pushes him backwards and attempts to rush away

GUY1 blocks his departure with an extended arm and moves his face close to GUY2's face, and points to his face

GUY2 backs up and attempts to flee

GUY1 chases after him but GUY2 moves too quickly.

GUY 1 drops his head and shakes it slowly and his shoulders droop indicating dejection

A FEMALE APPROACHES.

GUY1 lifts his head and focuses his attention on her. He scans her body with his eyes, taking in her figure. He smoothes his hair, fixes his shirt collar and adjusts his pants. She is reading while walking and he makes a point of bumping into her.

FEMALE, startled, drops book and takes step backward.

GUY1 smiles and bends over to pick up book. He glances at title and points at her - then at himself.

FEMALE grabs book out of his hand and attempts to move on, obviously leery of GUY1.

GUY1 extends his arm and touches her shoulder. She whirls around and hits him squarely across his face. He reels backwards and places his hand on his face, shaking his head in bewilderment and shrugs his shoulders

FEMALE removes her purse that is hanging on her shoulder and hits him on his shoulders - then focuses her attention on the book and moves on

GUY1 drops down on to the floor, drops his head and it's obvious by his heaving shoulders that he is sobbing. He shakes his head in frustration while pounding the floor with his fists.

He suddenly jumps up after spotting a CLOWN, who is puffing away on a cigarette. GUY1 jumps up and down in excitement, runs towards clown in an attempt to communicate with him

(END OF SCENE 1)

24. IF : Riding Bare-Backwards

Zappo the cat left home at a very young age to join the circus. Till this day, Zappo always rides his flying pig backwards because his mother long ago said, " Always remember where you came from."

Okay, so Zappo took it literally.
You can see my Moleskine entry here :)
