Preparing to go to school was like getting ready for extended deep sea diving….
Come on mom, we’re going to be late!
My kid brother looked like a tick about to pop!
What’s wrong?
I can’t put my arms down!
Put your arms down when you get to school!

Today starts SkADaMo 2014, a month long Sketchathon started by the UBER talented Linda Silvestri.
There are no rules. There are no winners. Sketch what you want, as often as you can. It’s really fun to find out what everyone comes up with. Post your sketches or links to your blog on facebook, twitter, instagram, tumblr, flickr or pinterest, and add the hasthtag #SkADaMo
Me, I like to come up with a theme to keep me motivated. Last year I did a Cajun theme and enjoyed the heck out of it. This year I’m feeling a little more Christmasy, so this is my theme for SkADaMo 2014. They won’t all be finished, after all this is a sketchathon and/or colored but this is what I’ve got on the brain. It’s one of my favorites!

Friday night, Halloween night, it rained for the first time in, like, forever!
It poured!
It was miraculous and life affirming!
It was marvelous!
Was looking forward to more precipitation, but nooooooo. The sun shone mockingly back at me today.
Maybe tomorrow we’ll get some “fowl” weather.
What is SkADaMo? Check it out here.

I realize I waited until the very last minute to get things started this year. But flying by the seat of the pants is SkADaMo tradition, afterall!
Sooooo, it’s November First! That means all the cool challenges are upon us.
There’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)
NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) and
PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month), of which I am a participant of again this year.) Wouldn’t miss it for the world!
There are probably a bunch more, but suffice it to say, November is a busy month for some. So now, for the past three years, SkADaMo “Sketch a Day Month” has also been thrown into the mix.
I really started SkADaMo as a personal challenge and gave it the name as a bit of a spoof on all the other November challenges. I even jokingly made a badge, thinking I would be the only participant. But lo and behold, several other wonderful artists, doodlers and sketchers threw their hats, or pencils into the mix.
So if anyone wants to join in, they are more than welcome to grab this badge, off to the side here and start sketching.
(Oh, by the way, I count this as my first sketch, so neener neener!) We play it fast and loose over here at SkADaMo!
SKADAMO RULES:
“What are the rules?” You may ask.
1. THERE ARE NO RULES! NO SIGN UP! NO REGISTRATION! NO GIVEAWAYS OR GUEST POSTERS! No regulations, themes, daily words, Facebook pages or anything else resembling organization. Just lots of sketching, commenting back and forth and hopefully lots of inspiration and craft honing!
SkADaMoers are scoff-laws and Mavricks! (Actually, the truth is I’m just not that organized.) The only code we live by this month is SKETCH! SKETCH! SKETCH! Sketch everyday from November 1 to November 30,or at least try to.
You may not sketch every single day, but by golly you will have tried and you’ll have more sketches in your sketchbook at the end of November than you might have otherwise.
So, there’s that!
2. In the past I kept a running list of participants right here on my blog. This year, however, if you post your sketches or links to your blog on facebook, twitter, instagram, tumblr, flickr or pinterest, why not go ahead and hasthtag it with #SkADaMo. I believe this would be a much more efficient way to keep track and follow fellow SkADaMo participants.
Oh, and did I mention, I’m not very organized?
3. Go ahead and grab this small badge if you’d like and use it as you see fit, on your blog or what have you.
4. Most important rule of all… SMILE! This is fun!
Sketch on my fellow SkADaMoers, (should there be any this year!)

It’s been a while since I updated! Time to do so, and I’ll begin with a Halloween piece I worked on recently. The main piece and closeups are below. I can always add and tweak, but there is a time to call an illustration “Done!” Happy Halloween, everyone!

He smells.
– What’s his name? – Guess.
Fifi?
That ain’t a name for this mutt.
Rover.
She’s coming. She’s coming.
Hide him.
I love you, Miss Hannigan.
And you will love the paddle closet.
And this…

Autumn! My favorite time of the year!
I’m not exactly what you would call a football fan, although I’m trying this year. And by trying I mean learning what a down is… yeah, I’m that behind.
I am, however, very excited about by the prospect of cooler temps and therefore many forays into the kitchen to attack new recipes.
Oh, and Halloween! Did I mention Halloween?

I've had this slightly twisted idea in my head for a week, so I decided to sketch it up. This is what deadlines do to me, apparently.
This is Lenny the Fly. He collects things. Lots of things. He's very excited to show you his new Human Collection. He is especially pleased with his most recent addition, The Plumber, complete with plumbers crack. You're welcome ;-)

So, I think I can safely say that today, I was one hot chick!
Anything over 75 degrees is too hot for me. So let’s just say today’s weather topping off at 109 really ruffled my feathers!
I don’t want to count my chickens before they’re hatched, but IS IT FALL YET?!!

EXCUSE ME, BUT I DO BELIEVE AN ANT’S IN MY PANTS!
There is an excellent chance that a situation such as this could cause a wee bit of anxiety and might even make a person feel, ahem, well… darn right antsy.
So one must remember to remain calm. You see, the attention span of an ant is quite short so feigning nonchalance is best. In roughly 10 to 15 minutes the novelty of wearing your jeans will have warn off. The bored ant will soon run along to find spilt milk or some sugar to walk through.
Possession of your pants and your sanity, regained!
Maybe.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Reworked an old bit of silliness in honor of the ant trails now taking over our home. They might as well be giant, as intrusive as they are.
Oh well, at least the flies (Amityville Horror) are gone.
Bugs, eh? So rude!

“Glorious, stirring sight! The poetry of motion! The real way to travel! The only way to travel! Here today–in next week tomorrow! Villages skipped, towns and cities jumped–always somebody else’s horizon! O bliss! O poop-poop! O my! O my!”

It seems that those who hire love the speed of digital rendering, but want the look of traditional work. So, in an ever continuing effort to make my digital look more traditional, I’ve been working on some new techniques. I’ve been leaving in the pencil lines, and in fact, adding a lot more of it…..more detail and hatching before coloring them in Photoshop. I also use Kyle T Webster brushes. They’re fantastic! I highly recommend them!
I like the look. You can see the person behind it. This will be my winter promotional postcard.

This House is Clean,
Add a tag
At this time, every year our house becomes housefly central for a day or two and is affectionately referred to by my husband, Tom and myself as “Amityville Horror”. Those who have seen the movie will know what I’m referring to. If you don’t know what I mean, well, Rod Steiger plays this priest, he’s in this haunted house and he gets attacked by flies and, well you really need to check this out, man.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adFRKm9ezw4
But, I digress.
So, while attempting to prepare a meal today, several flies circled my head in this dreadful holding pattern, while many more of their creepy little comrades paced shamelessly across the cutting board with their nasty little bug feet. At least 50 or A MILLION flies crawled, flitted or buzzed over every inch of our kitchen. One poor unfortunate got himself stuck in the butter.
Gross! That does it!
We take up arms. Flyswatters and rolled up newspapers are picked up and waved wildly at the air in hopes of sending the tiny, vile vermin back from whence they came. The wild waving and syncopated swatting, followed by loud intermittent thwaps and kersplats, predictably sends our two kitties vaulting out of kitchen and into farther reaches of the house, each heading for their own piece of furniture to hide under and wait for saner times. Clearly the humans, usually such pacifists, have gone to a deep, dark place.
The carnage can go on for hours, sometimes days. But eventually this slaughter, the stuff of horror films, ends as abruptly as it began. Feeling spent, yet flush with cathartic relief, we turn to each other, blow the fly guts off our swatters and announce…
“This house is clean.”
