5. Auction (Publishing Hearts Connecticut) is going on now!

Many of us have watched the tragedy fall out on T.V.

Innocent lives lost. Heroes found. Hearts broken.

As a publishing industry, we can ban together to make a difference in more lives once again.

As parents, we need to honor our own children in this tragedy by helping others.

As humans, we can step up and help each other.

What is PubHeartsConn?

It’s an online auction to benefit the victims of the Sandy Hook Connecticut shootings through Newtown Youth and Family Services. The auction is currently scheduled to start Monday, Dec 17th (9am EST) and the first round will end Friday Dec 21st (11:00 PM EST)

Agents, editors, authors, illustrators, and industry experts have donated various products and services to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with donations being made directly school.

We plan to donate the money to the school's relief fund for the families to possibly help with grief counseling, funeral arrangements, and scholarships for students.

7. You can help support an African library. And get something cool for yourself!

Jean Reidy in UgandaI grew up going to libraries. They were universally accessible, well-stocked, well-staffed and free.

So, sometimes, I forget that not everyone grows up with such easy access to books.

But I never forget that everyone should.

That’s why I was thrilled to hear about author Jean Reidy’s online auction to support the library at the Musana Children’s Home in Iganga, Uganda. Eighty orphaned children live there full time. Another 120 come each day from surrounding communities to attend school.

The home makes a difference, providing food, shelter, medical care, education and safety to people who desperately need it. But resources are tight. And the children’s needs increase each day.

Here’s what Jean has to say about the home.

“The Musana community was founded and is run by three young women from my hometown here in Colorado. In addition to dormitories and classrooms, the school has a small library badly in need of books … I hope you will join me at the auction and reach beyond our borders to celebrate literacy and a love of reading ─ as well as earth, space and a kid’s sense of place.”

Jean Reidy's LIGHT UP THE NIGHTJean visited the home in 2010 (that’s her with some of the children in the picture). She decided to use the publication of her most recent picture book Light Up the Night to raise awareness and funds for the library. She rallied other authors, artists, businesspeople and creative folk of all kinds to donate items that you can bid on, with proceeds going toward the library.

There is something for everyone.

Especially if you’re a reader, a writer, a librarian, a teacher or a parent. A partial list of items includes:

– Manuscript critiques by published authors and agents.
– Classroom visits by published authors.
– Signed books.
– Artwork by professional children’s book illustrators.
– Handmade jewelry.
– Home decor.
– Handmade baby blankets and quilts.
– And more, more, more.

It’s easy to leave a bid.

Visit the auction anytime between now and Nov. 18. And if you promote the auction via Facebook, Twitter or your blog, you can be entered in a separate contest to win a $100 gift card for — what else? — books!

If you’ve ever been grateful for being able to pick up a book and read it, this is one way to help someone else grow up with the same gift.

Stop by Jean’s auction today!

8. The Artist Who Painted an ORANGE PIGEON!

In honor of pal Eric Carle's latest book, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, a gaggle of illustrators have made their own take on the idea as part of an online auction to benefit arts education around the country.  There are some truly amazing pieces out there.  My Orange Pigeon (poorly reproduced on the site, unfortunately) is in this batch of bidding. Go take a look!

10. Why Ninja Zombies Rule

I've been following Carrie Harris for a long time, from back in the days when Twilight parodies and Slayer (of Bees) stories debuted, people at the gym freaked us all out and Richard Simmons made regular appearances on her not quite so fancy blog. I still have emails from when she got her book deal and the fabulous prizes she sent after I zombified her two years ago.

But nothing could have prepared me for the awesomeness that is The Night of the Giving Dead. Not only is this woman funny, she's generous too.

To celebrate the release of her debut YA novel, Bad Taste in Boys, Carrie is hosting an auction to benefit the Giving Library at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital, a hospital that serves about 70,000 kids. Yeah, totally worthy recipient, right?

Here are just a few of the items you can bid on:

(Just, y' know, don't outbid me on the items I've bid on...pretty please! ;P)

But check out the grand prize drawings:
  1. A Kindle preloaded with Bad Taste in Boys  OR
  2. A 6-month mentorship with Carrie herself
Even if you've already been to The Night of the Giving Dead, check it out again. New items are added as they come in so the lists keep growing.

Help sick kids, get cool stuff -- it's a win-win for sure. The auction only runs through July 25 so make sure you make your bids before time runs out.

And just so you know, tomorrow night while Carrie vicariously attends the midnight showing of Harry Pott

11. BAD TASTE IN BOYS: Night of the Giving Dead

pastedGraphic.pdf
There are few people in the writing world who have helped me navigate this journey toward publication like Carrie Harris. If you're not familiar with Carrie, she writes goofball YA monster books and runs a riot of a blog. She's the president of the Class of 2k11 and has been both peer and mentor to me.
Her zombie book, BAD TASTE IN BOYS, debuts next week. Along with her debut, she's running an auction called Night of the Giving Dead.
Bad Taste in Boys
Here's what she has to say about the event:
I'm doing an online auction in July to benefit the Giving Library at the University of Michigan children's hospital. My husband's a cancer survivor...and now he's a pediatric oncologist. He works with the doctors that saved his life.

12. An Auction For L.A. Banks

This morning I stopped by Edi's blog which lead me to White Readers Meet Black Authors where author Carleen Brice gives information about an auction to support author L.A. Banks.

Noted author L.A. Banks is in the hospital very sick. Her medical bills are quite high so beginning tomorrow Tuesday, June 21st authors and people in the book biz are auctioning items and services to raise money to help cover her expenses. If you're a writer, this is a great opportunity to have a published author or an industry professional help you with your work! There's also lots of cool stuff for readers--books, books and more books! Banks wrote a variety of genres, so there is quite a diversity of books available.

There are a lot of great items up for bid for a very good cause. Please spread the word.

The auction will run from June 21 9pm - July 1, 9pm

15. Tornado Disaster Relief

Here are a couple of ways you can help those whose communities were devastated by storms last month:

Help Write Now is a writing community auction to benefit southern storm relief. Along with four other Project Mayhem members, I've donated a critique for a middle-grade novel. See more here.

16. Chris Battle is having a couple of auctions through eBay Giving...

Chris Battle is having a couple of auctions through eBay Giving Works to benefit Give2Asia. Chris: “They’re for 2 additional Tron Quorra prints that were featured in Q-Pop’s Help Japan show out here in L.A. last month. Since the quickly organized Q-Pop show was unable to offer international sales thru their online store, I decided to offer these extra prints on eBay to allow some of my overseas fans (Some of whom contacted me about their inability to buy the Q-Pop pieces) to get in on the action.  The auctions just went live this evening, and will end May 1st @ 9:00 PM.”

The two Quorra auctions are here (blue) and here (red).

17. Freddie Mercury Biography To Be Updated & Revised

In a pre-London Book Fair auction, publisher Hodder and Stoughton has acquired the world rights to an updated and revised version of Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography authored by Lesley-Ann Jones. Although an exact number was not revealed, the deal is reportedly worth “high five-figures.”

According to The Bookseller, nonfiction editor Hannah Black negotiated the deal, securing world rights, with Mulcahy Conway Associates literary agent Ivan Mulcahy. A publication date has been set for 2012 to synchronize with the release of the Freddie Mercury biopic starring Sacha Baron-Cohen as Queen’s lead singer.

Jones (pictured, via) released the original version of her Freddie Mercury biography with Hodder and Stoughton in 1997. In the past, she has also written titles profiling pop star Kylie Minogue and supermodel Naomi Campbell.

18. This Drawering FOR SALE!

BIKING ELEPHANT - Auction for a 5" x 7" Original Watercolor Drawering.

So I've been doing these 5" x 7" watercolor paintings for a while now and at the urging of my illustrator pal, Guy Francis, I've decided to put one up for sale on eBay.
It is very RARE for me to sell my artwork. It's difficult for me to let go, but I'm working on that by letting go of this one. It's an original watercolor of a biking elephant.
I love this drawering, so I hope it goes to a good home. YOUR home!

19. City of Boston to sell entire contents of print shop

I just found out via Boing Boing that the city of Boston has shut down it's 78 year old print shop in a cost cutting effort and is now auctioning off its equipment in 200 lots.  The auction is being held on Feb 24 at 11AM estern and will be simultaneously conducted in the factory at 174 North St. as well as digitally.

There is all sorts of great old printing gear so I suggest any pamphleteers, zinesters, and print shops take a gander at the wares on offer.  In the Boston Globe they described an old-fashioned platen press with a hand lever and foot pedal and a Linotype machines that stand 6 1/2 feet tall as two of the pieces.

21. Thankful

As Thanksgiving approaches, I'm thinking of all the things I'm grateful for. Since this is a writing blog, I'll share some of the writing related things that fill me with joy and gratitude.

Like Kristi, I'm grateful that I have the time to write and the support of my family who help and encourage me to find and make the time to meet my writing goals.

I'm grateful for the awesome crit partners I've met in the last year and who I'm also fortunate to call my friends. (Lacey, Kristi, Natalie, LOVE you guys!)

And most of all, I'm grateful for the amazing, generous, supportive, open-minded, open-hearted, talented, giving members of the YA writing community. I am constantly overwhelmed and awed by the effort this community puts into helping others whether it's in becoming a better writer, or living a better life. I am so proud to be a part of this group of people and to do my tiny part in helping others and sharing the love of great books to anyone I can.

Since this is a time of being grateful, and the season of giving is just around the corner I wanted to share a link to the Season of Love and Hope Auction benefitting children's writer Bridget Zinn who is battling colon cancer.

TONS of amazing authors and publishing people have donated some seriously awesome things like critiques and ARCs and vacations so check it out if you have the time.

I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for reading this blog. I'm so grateful for all of you!

It appears that Edward Tufte's personal library is going to be going under the hammer on December 2nd via Christie's.  The auction catalogue is available online and viewings have been arranged for the week prior to the sale.  There will be some amazing items in this auction and a must see for any serious science and maths collectors.

23. Why is it so hard to let go?

My son's high school is having a banquet fundraiser next weekend and they're asking for items for their silent auction.  One of the things listed in the packet home was artwork from a local artist.  Well, we don't have much that we can contribute, but that's one thing I could do.  Besides, I have all of these drawings tucked away in my studio, so that would be perfect.

So, tonight I tried to choose one to donate - much harder than I thought.  I've narrowed it down, but I found it surprisingly difficult to entertain the idea of letting them go.  I don't have any prints, they're all originals, and they have been captured on film and posted here at one time or another.  There were even a few that I just said "no way - I'm not giving that one up!"  A lot of those had sentimental connections to my kids in their original inspiration.

But, isn't that what I'm supposed to be doing as an artist?  Shouldn't I be getting my work out there, get it seen?  It would be difficult to achieve anything professionally if I keep my work locked away in a drawer.  On the other hand, I'd hate to think that it could end up locked away in someone else's drawer...or turn up as the next white elephant gift at the office Christmas party.

25. Oh No! An Auction!!!

Uber-talented illustrator Dan Santat sent out a challenge to a bunch of fellow illustrators: Create an illustration inspired by his new book Oh No! (written by Mac Barnett). The idea was to come up with an image that would take place within in the story but still be separate from the events in Dan and Mac's book. So I added this little moment after the end of the book... the giant robot has been booted into the bay by the giant frog (really, check out this book) and this little boat comes across it.

Although a fun experiment, the REAL reason behind this project is that ALL of the original art will be auctioned off this week. All proceeds benefit the non-profit writing center, 826LA.

Here's the poster with details of Auction #1 (which is where my painting will be):
