2. Reading is a Generous Act

Few books are perfect. If you read like a writer you must read to gain what you can from each book, so reading then becomes a generous act. I tell my students they must learn to be generous readers, and judge each book not by whether it's the book they would have written but by whether it fulfilled the writer's apparent intention for it.

3. Meeting Shannon Hale

Shannon Hale was in town on Thursday, talking up her most recent book, THE PRINCESS ACADEMY: PALACE OF STONE. I never tire of hearing other authors talk about how they work, how they manage with children, writing, and life. It's very much an iron sharpens iron thing.

Shannon talked about getting ideas for stories daily (a story isn't one idea but many, she said), writing down those ideas, and coming back to them at a later date. She works on two books at once, turning to one when the other is in edits. A sitter comes to watch her four kids for three hours a day, five days a week, and she commits to 1,000 a day.

I felt a kinship with Shannon when she mentioned she's drawn to stories that are hard. If a story is easy, there really isn't anything to say. I'm in the midst of my own hard story, and hearing I'm not alone in this challenge was reassuring -- and fuel to help me finish my work.
This girl in front of me was adorable. She'd worn out her first copy of THE PRINCESS ACADEMY, so she bought two more: one for regular reading and one for backup.

5. Kind Words from Beth Kephart

There's an amazing author I met last year, not with a formal introduction, but through a book review. That book was like a nourishing meal, meaty and savory and lovely. Now she's read May B., and I am deeply honored by what she had to say about my girl.

Thank you, Beth Kephart, for everything.

8. Who Are the Elevensies?

The Elevensies are a group of 85 (!) middle-grade and young adult authors debuting next year. Our primarily goal is to support one another through the publication process. Members may be as active as they choose and can participate in web chats, weekly check ins, post questions, success, stories, cover art, etc.

Here's our official mission statement:

"The Elevensies is a Live Journal community of YA and Middle Grade authors whose first books come out in 2011. It's a place to hang out, make friends and share the journey to publication with each other, with fellow writers, and with interested readers. Sharing and support are key to all we do. Although we are not a marketing group, we will host several features on our blog aimed at sharing our stories and offering advice and inspiration to aspiring authors. We also will host two to three bigger activities throughout 2011 aimed at connecting our books with readers and supporting those who work with teens and tweens. Elevensies is opt-in and free of dues, and members participate as much or as little as they like. Mostly, we're in this to have fun and to help one another make the most of the once-in-a-lifetime debut experience. "

While some of the posts at our Live Journal account are private (discussions only between us), some are open to the public.

Stop by some time and say hello!

9. Do the Write Thing for Nashville

An email from fellow Elevensie Victoria Schwab:

So Nashville has had a HARD time of it these past few days, and several Nashville authors - Myra McEntire, Amanda K. Morgan and Victoria Schwab - have come together to host an auction.

Here's the scoop:

On May 1st and 2nd, Nashville, Tennessee received a record amount of rain—nearly 13.5 inches. By May 3rd, huge portions of our city were under water, including the The Grand Ole Opry, Opryland, The Nashville Symphony Hall, the downtown area, and countless homes. Families, many of whom did not have flood insurance, have lost everything. One of the hydro plants is flooded, which means we’re running short on water. Many lives have been extinguished and more bodies are being recovered each day.

And yet, Tennessee continues to be largely ignored by the national media. A large portion of the local media, including Fox News and CBS, is flooded. They are doing their best to work without proper equipment. Nashville is not getting the exposure it needs, which means not receiving the aid that our city so desperately requires.

Our city is drowning. Will you help us?

Victoria Schwab, Amanda K. Morgan, and Myra McEntire --all Nashville authors-- have come together to host an auction.

We're auctioning off critiques, signed books, and more from authors, agents, editors, and other industry professionals. ALL proceeds to: http://www.cfmt.org/floodrelief/

If any of you can donate ANYTHING, please please let me know. We've already got some items, a trailer by Vania Stoyanova among critiques and signed books, but we need ANYTHING you can give.

Thanks guys. It's always amazing to see the writing community come together, and this has been no exception.

The blog where the auction will take place (emails are there too if you have something to donate): http://dothewritethingfornashville.blogspot.com/

I am donating a critique for the auction:

10 pages of a mid-grade manuscript, 10 pages of a novel-in-verse, or an entire picture book.

 Please consider participating!

Remember, the THREE RIVERS RISING giveaway ends at 6:00pm CDT.

10. Help an Author at the Library

What's an easy, free way to get your hands on a new book and promote your author friends? Ask your local library to consider buying a book!

In the last few months, I've asked the children's department of the Terrebonne Parish Library to order four different books. Not once have I been turned down.

Keep this in mind next time you want to read the latest. And when your friends sell, stop by your local library to request an order.

PJ, I'm keeping my promise. As soon as THE EMERALD TABLET comes, I'll be on it.
