Then slip on your ruby red slippers, click your heels together three times and repeat…

I’ve teamed up with my local indie in Bernardsville, NJ.
I’ll be signing THE MONSTORE at The Bookworm on Thursday, June 20 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
But, if you can’t make it, you can still get a signed copy made out to your favorite kiddo. (Or yourself, or Toto the dog, as the case may be.)
Just call The Bookworm at 908-766-4599 and pre-order. Specify to whom you’d like me to sign the book. I’ll be heading over there periodically to sign copies and they’ll ship ‘em out to you.
You’ll also receive one of these cool, exclusive “Grand Opening” stickers with your book…

Some assembly required.
Sorry, Ruby Red Slippers sold separately.

Stargirl
April 20—May 12, 2013
By Y York
Adapted from the novel by Jerry Spinelli
Directed by Samantha Bellomo
When an eccentric homeschooler arrives at Mica Area High School, hallways buzz with texts, whispers fill the air, and 11th grader Leo Borlock’s life is changed forever. Based on the critically-acclaimed young adult novel by Jerry Spinelli, the author of everyone’s favorite Maniac Magee, Stargirl celebrates first love, non-conformity, and the similarities that connect us all. Best appreciated by ages 12 and up.
Join the actors after every performance to discuss the making of the production.
Meet Author Jerry Spinelli!
Jerry is the author of more than 30 books including Stargirl, Crash, Loser, Milkweed, Knots in My Yo-Yo String, and has recently released a new novel, Hokey Pokey. In 1991 he received the Newbery Medal for Maniac Magee and was awarded the Newbery Honor in 1998 for Wringer.

Please join me and author Rebecca Rule this Friday, February 22nd at the
Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts, for a special Storytime and book signing!
Here are the
details... hope to see you there!
When e-readers came out, I put my nose in the air and told all my writer friends, “Not for me.”
But then my writer friends started getting books published, and I wanted to buy their books, and the digital book was often cheaper. And besides, everyone else had an e-reader. So I said, “Maybe I’ll try one.”
My husband gave me an e-reader, and then I downloaded tons of books, because I could carry SO many books with me in one handy, little device. But up popped a glitch. How to get a friend to sign a digital book?
Lucky for authors (and fans of authors),
Evan Jacobs was one step ahead of me. He came up with
Authorgraph, a fun way to get a digital autograph.
It’s a pretty simple idea, and it’s a free service, too. If you’re an author, all you need to do is sign up with Authorgraph, and then add your books to the site. You can check out the
Author FAQ page for all the details, but basically, adding a book is as easy as finding the ASIN number on your book. And yes, Evan explains exactly how to find the number.
Oh! And your book doesn’t even have to be a digital one. It can be hardcover or a paperback as well as an e-book. Plus, you can choose to use the script provided for your signature, or sign your name in your own, unique way.
For readers, it’s just as simple. Go to the site and find an author’s book, then request an inscription. You can even ask for a personal inscription. It's a nice way to let an author know you like their work.
And I think it’s worth the few minutes for authors to sign up. This past week, a non-local writer friend of mine mentioned (via social media) that she had joined the site. I have her first book in a trilogy, a paperback, with a personal inscription. Now, I’ll ask her to sign her second book for me on Authorgraph. I haven’t purchased it yet, but I can still get it signed because the authorgraph is a separate document.
I know it’s not quite the same as getting a book signed. But it’s a fun application for readers, and it might even help authors sell more books.
Because I’ll surely add my writer friend’s newest book to my TBB (To Be Bought) pile, now that I have her authorgraph. And I’ll get the e-book. Because as I said just the other day to my critique group, “You know I’m all for e-readers.”

Shannon Hale was in town on Thursday, talking up her most recent book, THE PRINCESS ACADEMY: PALACE OF STONE. I never tire of hearing other authors talk about how they work, how they manage with children, writing, and life. It's very much an
iron sharpens iron thing.
Shannon talked about getting ideas for stories daily (a story isn't one idea but many, she said), writing down those ideas, and coming back to them at a later date. She works on two books at once, turning to one when the other is in edits. A sitter comes to watch her four kids for three hours a day, five days a week, and she commits to 1,000 a day.
I felt a kinship with Shannon when she mentioned she's drawn to stories that are hard. If a story is easy, there really isn't anything to say. I'm in the midst of my own hard story, and hearing I'm not alone in this challenge was reassuring -- and fuel to help me finish my work.
This girl in front of me was adorable. She'd worn out her first copy of THE PRINCESS ACADEMY, so she bought two more: one for regular reading and one for backup.

I fell asleep earlier and dreamt about my first book signing for THE MONSTORE. It was so glitzy and glamorous, I wanted to reenact it for you. Unfortunately, my makeup smeared onto my pillow and my hair got all matted, plus I lost my Jane Jetson mask, so these cartoon characters offered to be my cast.
But I don’t think they got it quite right. Especially that dude with the camera.
Many thanks to all the folks at Barrington Books, our friends, family and readers who came to book signing on Saturday. If you missed us, we will be signing together again on Saturday October 20th at the
Southwestern Connecticut You Book Expo.
I will be signing this weekend in Connecticut. Don't miss this chance to meet Rosemary Wells and have your copy of Following Grandfather signed by both author and illustrator!

Yesterday's visit to the Bruce Museum was a blast! For me, the best part was talking to the children up close and one on one about how picture books are made. (See how low my chair was? Perfect kid-eye-level!) I brought along lots of show and tell-- my sketchbook, thumbnail sketches, cleaned-up sketches, and final art.

I think the kids were most surprised by the scribbles in my sketchbook, and how messy the beginnings of a book can be. But maybe that gives them permission to explore their own ideas without trying to make them "perfect" the first time around. I hope!
Once again, I wish I had taken more pictures. But here's a shot of the museum shop...

... and
Sled Ride art on the wall!...
The exhibit runs through February 24th, 2013!
We had a blast this past weekend in Maine, with 3 venues visited, 587 miles driven, a whole bunch of books signed, and more laughs than I can count. I was especially glad to have my daughter along for the ride. She was a huge help, acting as Chief Navigator, Crackerjack Photographer, and My Spare Brain.
Here's author
Rebecca Rule and me reading at Pineland Farms....
... and the Portland Children's Museum. (I wish we'd had more time to explore Portland... I was too busy trying not to crash into city buses while attempting to find our way there.)
And here we are at L.L. Bean, or what Becky has dubbed "The Mothership." I look like I'm about to bust a gut. (Becky must have said something funny again. She's good that way.)

This is my favorite shot...
Fun times! (Plus, we made it home in time for Downton Abbey on Sunday night. Sweet.)
It’s a great tradition. Right before Halloween each year, Barrington Books gathers regional picture book, middle grade and young adult authors & illustrators for a festive day of book signings, crafts, costumes, treats and stories.
Event Schedule
10 am-12pm
12-2 pm
* Spooky Story Hour will begin at 1 pm
On Friday, December 2nd, step on out to
Everyday Athlete for an evening of cookies and books. In honor of
Polar Opposites, we'll be snacking on America's favorite black n' white cookies (the irresistible Oreo) and washing them down with a tall (probably short) glass of milk.
With due respect to
Who Has These Feet?, our hosts for the night own the finest running shoe store east of Green Lake.

I was one of twelve Denver authors who participated in the 2nd annual Twelve Books of Christmas Party this holiday season. The event was held at The Baker St. Pub & Grill in Greenwood Village where 200+ guests enjoyed hors d’oeurves, conversation and books!
With author and 12 Books of Christmas founder, Polly Letofsky
Because of the extreme generosity of our guests, Project Linus was able to collect:
63 skeins of yarn
24 yards of polar fleece
7 completed blankets
$475
That will go a long way in helping Project Linus to continue providing seriously ill and traumatized children with handmade security blankets.

This will be so much fun!
We are signing at the famous Frog and Toad on Thursday evening. If you are in the area drop by for a glass of wine, check out the amazing stuff in the store and pick up a few signed books. I will try to bring a few original works -probably from my book Knitty Kitty.

I was happy today to find this review linked to the Barnes and Nobles site.
Children's Literature
You can't help but tap your feet as you read this book. The words make a beat throughout the book and by the time you reach the end you just want to dance. Marita's dad and his salsa band are performing in the park tonight and as she and her mom make their way through the town friends follow along. Reminiscent of a Gloria Estefan song you can feel the rhythm as you read along. Though fun and upbeat it's hardly the story to read when you want to calm the little ones for bed at night. But if you are in the mood for an upbeat fun time that requires no thought whatsoever, this is the book. The illustrations are as lively as the rhythm that urges you to move and the Spanish is so well woven into the story that bilingual readers don't even notice the shift from one language to the other.

I thought since many of you live close to Booktender’s Secret Garden on Paoli Pike in Doylestwon, PA, you might want to plan to visit next Saturday. Jerry and Eileen Spinelli will be there to do a booksigning on MARCH 31ST 2012 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. If you haven’t met Jerry and Eileen, you really should pop over to Booktenders. You won’t be disappointed. Here is the full address:

WRITERS: Deadline to submit your first page inspired by the illustration below is March 25th, so you have a few more days.
Editor Leila Sales from Viking is our guest critiquer this month. Please attach your double spaced, 12 point font, 23 line first page to an e-mail and send it to kathy(dot)temean(at)gmail(dot)com. Also cut and paste it into the body of the e-mail. Put “March 25th First Page Prompt” in the subject line.

ILLUSTRATORS: Here is your chance to show off a little. Since the old saying is that, ”March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb,” I am looking for an illustration that incorporates some type of weather in with the piece. This gives you a lot of leeway. Heck, just some wind in someone’s hair would fill the bill. I may post some during the month, but will definitely post all on March 29th, so I need to receive your illustrations no later than March 27th.
Please make sure the illustration is at least 500 pixels wide and includes a blurb about you and a link to see more of your work. Please send it to kathy(dot)temean(at)gmail(dot)com and put “March Illustration” in the subject box.
Talk tomorrow,
Kathy

Lissa Price the fantastic debut author of the equally amazing book Starters will be signing copies at COSTCO on 2901 Los Feliz Blvd. from 1pm-3pm. She also mentions that there will be swag as well. Now I just finished this book and if I lived in the LA area I would totally go and buy many copies to give away to friends who are looking for a great story that will keep you guessing until the very end. In fact it still has me guessing! Plus this cover is so amazing and I found out from Lissa herself that there is an short story e-book regarding the cover of this book! I will link to it below. My review of this terrific YA science fiction/dystopian thriller will be forthcoming!

After months of prep work, Surtex 2012 is history. It was a great time of meetings, and visiting with other artists. It almost feels like a dream now that it is over. I am filled with ideas and hope for the future!
Here is a picture of Margaret Anastas, my editor at Harper Collins, me, and Annie Stone, Margaret’s assistant. It was so fun sitting at Harper C. and visiting with everyone who worked so hard on Peepsqueak and his promotion. I do love my HC family. They had a nice breakfast for me and we all met in the Harper Collins library. I wish I had a picture of Jeanne Hogle. She was my graphic designer. She escaped the room before I could snap her picture.
After our meeting, I packed up 30 books and headed to the Javitz Center in a doozy of a rainstorm! I LOVED that cab driver for picking me up!!
Messing around with my friends Jane Shasky and Megan Halsey during my Peepsqueak book signing at Surtex. Everyone was in such a good mood!

Here is my teeny tiny room at the Best Western. I was surprised at how small it was, but in the end, it was cozy and I was so glad I stayed there. It was a good retreat after a busy day.
Can’t forget my sweet agent Alicia Dauber. She had everything running smoothly!
Outside my window all the horse drawn carriages were lining up. New York is so full of LIFE!
As amazing as the big city is, it is always nice to come HOME! I had to get my zinnias planted!! Now it is back to work for the next show!

I got to tell you, ALA was cracking! It was my first visit to a BIG library conference and it was so much more than I expected. I expected to see a LOT of librarians, a LOT of BOOKS and SOME amazingly awesome people. What I didn't expect was to feel totally at home, surrounded by thousands of people who love books, LOVE them I tell you! If you have never attended ALA, summer or midwinter conference (and you can afford it) ... go! Just for the experience. If you're an illustrator, a writer or a reader I say GO! Get involved. Meet the librarians ... meet the publishers ... meet the famous writers and artists! (And the not so famous!) Go to panels and readings and presentations. Buy a ticket to the Newbery/Caldecott Banquet or the Coretta Scott King Awards. You won't regret it.
OK .. so my trip was fat ... got to Anaheim, CA Friday night (from Maine), back on the redeye, Sunday. My lovely roomie from last year's SCBWI summer conference (and LA resident) Charlene Ellen (MG author in waiting) collected me at the airport. (Thanks Charlene!). We stayed at the Hilton Anaheim ... excellently situated right next to the conference centre, so you could nip back and forth to the hotel during the day.
Here's our 'Disney view' room ... watched the fireworks in the evening. Here's the view:
We got upgraded after first being put in an occupied room. You know that feeling when you open the door .. and oops, there they are on the bed!! JUST KIDDING!!! But the room WAS occupied ;-)
And there's the swimming pool that the kid pooped in just after I got in. Yuk!!!! No, really, it was a great hotel. Despite the toilet blockage. (I blame Charlene).
Pretty nice to get an exhibitor's badge too! Felt like a pony at a show. (No comments from the cheap seats, thank you). I had a book signing with Kane Miller and also with Charlesbridge on Saturday .. pretty overwhelming for a first timer.

Camden Public Library, Maine must be right up there in the list of prettiest locations for a library. And last week I was lucky enough to be part of the line up of authors and illustrators for the 7th Annual Children's Book Festival .... it was a fun day, and I think the pics say it all! I love doing Book Festivals!
