I loved this podcast. You two are so passionate about Humphrey by Carol Heyer, I felt like I could visualize every page the way you described it. I will definitely buy Humphrey based on your recommendation. I’ve seen other books by Carol Heyer and she is an outstanding illustrator and writer.

I think most Iraninans know this story as we studied it at school at an early age. It makes me so proud to see this story written in another language so that the knowledge and wisdom is introduced to peoples of other tongues and cultures. It makes me even more proud because the person responsible, is me dear dear school friend Susan.

This was such a great podcast to listen to. I think one of the challenges of current day teachers, especially in lower grades, is finding a book that is educational as well as funny. A book like this, which seems to have a goofy main character and space for a lot of audience interaction could be great before a lesson to get the kids energized and things like that. I’ve really enjoyed looking around your website, and can’t wait to listen to more podcasts!

What a great website! I have always enjoyed children’s books, but as a new grad student majoring in elementary education, I am just beginning to see them from a critical perspective. It is impossible for teachers to know every children’s book available, but your website offers a wide range of books to explore, and offers possible topics of discussion. What a great resource!

I am glad I listened to this specific podcast on Cuddly Dudley, because I think it is key to choose books that open up discussion regarding a topic students can relate to. I’m sure that all students can relate to wanting to be alone, especially when it comes to family members, and this book would give students the opportunity to discuss their own experiences and perspectives regarding this topic.

After hearing this podcast I immediately ordered this children’s book. I love the message and values that it conveys, in addition to your take on the text and its illustrations. The idea of loving oneself regardless is an important message at any age. Validating yourself rather than waiting for others to validate your actions is a life long lesson with great importance. Celebrating independent thinkers is a rare topic for children’s books. This one does it with such grace and truly disrupts any notion of normality.

I listened to this podcast in a very timely manner. I was recently asked to analyze the story of Cinderella in one of my graduate classes. The thing that struck me the most was the idea that Cinderella relied on other people to bring her happiness. I think that this sends a very negative message to kids, especially young girls. It is refreshing to find a book about a girl who is an independent thinker and who can enjoy being herself for who she is. I love that Odd Velvet does not need other people to accept her in order to find happiness in her life. I have never read this book, but I certainly plan on seeking it out. Thank you for introducing this book to me!

I think this book looks critically at the social dimension in schools that can be hurtful to a student if they realize they are not treated the same as the other students. A lot of students can relate to Velvet, weather it is being just a little different or very different from other students. This book is helpful in classrooms where students are not too accepting of other students who live life in their own way. I think students who beat to their own drum will be affirmed by this book, and those students who are the social ring leaders maybe a little more appreciative of people and their differences.

I think that books that relate to songs are absolutely amazing. One of the books that I completed a text set around was “Following the Drinking Gourd” which you have also listed as one of your favorite books. This is a great way to intertwine different disciplines such as music and reading, and allow kids to make that connection across different subjects. I haven’t read this book, but I think it would be interesting to create a text set around music and literature and provide a lesson plan for how we can introduce the two subjects together.

Running out to purchase this book!

I loved your comments about how the professional mariners are represented in this book and how they dealt with the problems that were thrown at them. These are important lessons for youth that I believe are powerfully taught through the maritime experience, both firsthand and through literature.

Monday I start a 2 week sail training program for at- risk underserved youth in which we incorporate Joseph Conrad’s classic short story Youth, a Narrative. In 2 weeks, I will be running a corporate leadership program where we will use Melville’s Billy Budd. Sea stories convey such powerful messages for all of us. Thanks for sharing this great book for even younger readers.

hi my names yasra and i would just like to say that this book is absolutely brilliant. during this school term we have had ghanian students come to our school to see what education is like here (in england). lets get to the point on this evning named the globe (a multiculterul event) we read through this book and we performed a play on this it turned out to be brilliant.
we had perfect story and perfect timeing. it took us 9 whole school days to perform this. it was a great challenge but we had great fun listen to it. my favourite carector is the anzu bird its sooo cool. an amazing book!
