1. Dining Room Dinner Doodles...

As followers of the blog know, the family spends most nights doodling after dinner on a big piece of butcherblock paper that serves as our table cloth. Recently, we had my father and mother-in-law over for a visit and it was fun to see how differently everyone doodled. A great time was had by all. Here they are along with a slew of other recent dinners: (click to enlarge an image) This

Sketches for NANA IN THE CITY; Clarion books; Coming Fall 2014

I've just begun character studies for my next (3rd) book as author, Nana in the City, about a boy who travels to the city to visit his nana and needs a little convincing about why the city is a good place (for a nana) to live. I'm looking forward to jumping in to final art this spring!

5. love me doodle

Posting a couple of oldies here, whilst I get my head around Photoshop and while I tackle (struggle with) my tax returns. It really is the worse job of the year. Made only worse when you leave it until the last minute.

These drawings are both on sale. And, are both on a sale (?). Excuse me for peddling my wares but yes, I'm skint again. It seems being a professional doodler isn't the most lucrative way of making a living. The original, of the drawing above, is on sale at a ridiculously cheap price. One of my gorgeous friends said that this drawing was like 'jewellery flotsam, a tide-line of trinkets' and, you know, that's exactly the effect I was going for. The price has been reduced, by a third, and you can buy it HERE.

The print of this, probably my most famous drawing, is also currently on sale. HALF PRICE! And you can get your mits on it HERE.

The day started so well. Me, and this drawing, are featured in the London Metro today. In a piece about doodling. If you'd like to read it here's THE LINK. To be honest, just being mentioned in the same article as Larry David has made my day, week, year.

Something tells me, though, that today's going to go downhill from here. Right then, *rolls up sleeves* come on you tax returns. Let's be having you.

6. Sketchbook Saturday

I'm loving my new watercolor sketchbook, but haven't had much time for it recently. I'm working on final artwork for one of my picture books that will come out in the Fall . . . MO'S MUSTACHE. MOre to come about that soon-ish. Have a great weekend! - Ben

8. See Ya in the New Year!

Hug your kids. Draw with them. Hope for peace.  Work for it, too. (I'll see you in 2013 with all kinds of exciting news about the upcoming year)

9. Doodle Day: Flowers Squared

23-Doodle-Flower-Box

Just another quick, messy, doodle ... flowers in a square-ish sized box. A bit too rigid in style to be made into patterns, perhaps. Will just leave it be as it is, in the Moleskine journal.

10. Doodle Day: Leaves Softly

I doodled a few 'softly falling' leaves (I have leaves on my mind recently, for some odd reason!) into my small moleskine journal recently, so I scanned them into the computer - and couldn't help but experiment with the whole sketch a bit. Here are the step-by-step results:

Above is the original doodle sketch, a bit messy and very rough. Into photoshop it went for a cleanup:

Much better, no? Sat back to examine and try to figure out what I could do with it, as I'm thoroughly enjoying this whole process of creating patterns from anything and everything. As I'm also extremely indecisive when it comes to picking colours, I limited myself to a monochrome palette of blues and ended up with a couple of ideas:

They're both quite pleasing, I might create a pattern collection out of them, and include a wider selection of colours, what do you think? Cheers.

11. Doodle Day: Striped Boxes

I tend to doodle whenever I have a bit of free time (rare I know, but not highly unusual), so I have bits and pieces scribbled everywhere and I've been going through them in search of inspiration for patterns and art.

Here's one that I drew, with marker pens (or felt tip pens), in one of my little moleskines and that I'm seriously considering turning into a pattern collection ...

I do like the colours I picked for this. What do you think? A viable pattern source? I shall work on it and let you know how it goes. Cheers.

12. ART FEST SUCCESS!

This past long weekend, my husband (see him there in the photo) and I ran my DoodlePaintings booth at the Scituate Art Festival in Scituate, RI. We've attended the festival many times (Adam grew up there so he's been going his whole life), but this was the first year in which we were vendors ourselves. Exciting!

They make it pretty stress-free to set up and register, allowing the artists to set up a day ahead, which helped the other three days run smoothly. We got there each morning a bit after 7:30 to have enough time to fix up the booth and make sure everything was presentable. It was damp and a little cool much of the time but overall extremely comfortable and enjoyable. I made my first sale on Saturday at 9:40, 20 minutes before the festival officially started. By the end of the day, I had earned back the cost of the booth and was on my way to two more days of pure profit.

Sunday's rain held until around 2pm or so. Sales were slower, but by 3pm I had made the same amount in sales as the day previous, so we decided it was best to close up shop early and protect the art from the heavy rain. Monday was by far the best of the days--beautiful, crisp air, and almost $167 more in sales than the other two days. Not bad!

This was my 4th art & craft show ever, and having three, evenly paced days to compare and observe a sale trend was very helpful. I averaged about $250-$300 in sales per day through about 10 transactions. The important part to remember is that those are sales made entirely from lower priced items. The most expensive thing I sold this weekend was a small, unframed original painting for $80. If I had even sold one medium ($99) or large ($300) original, I would have done dramatically better.

So all things considered, it's been a very helpful learning process. Trying to introduce lower price point items (aka 5x7 mini prints for $5) without discouraging larger sales is a bit of a delicate process. I've also found that having prints of my most commented pieces has been helpful as well. Learning what people like and what they want to purchase is sort of fascinating.

But the absolute best part of this weekend (and any art fest for that matter) are the many kids who respond so strongly to their first doodlepaintings encounters. There is a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. And I am super honored that kids ask their parents for my art. It's even cooler when they share with me what they see in the doodles. Nothing better than a 5 minute conversation with a seven year old boy going from painting to painting saying he sees a jungle, a video game, lizard skin, a close up of sand in a desert, balloons, and a forest with bamboo. And as he walked away with his mom he exclaimed "That was so cool! I LOVE doodle paintings!" It made the entire weekend worthwhile.

The following day, I gathered up all my receipts and tallied my profits and losses. I've invested a decent amount of pocket money into this little business, and I was pleased and surprised to find that I am profiting at about 15% of my investment. That means I've made back everything I spent and a little bit more. I'd like to see that number go up...and maybe it will next year now that I have much of what I need to continue without investing a large amount more.

The next and final art show of the season will be at the Holiday Marketplace in Garden City (Cranston, RI) December 1 & 2. The cost of the booth was $250. It's worth the gamble knowing now I average about that per day. And since it's two days I have a chance of making a profit. I will focus on smaller, gift-able items and see how that strategy works out. And even if it's a bust and I lose the money, at least I will have tried. And the more things I try, the more I can learn and adjust and grow this business!

14. Sketchbook Saturday (digital style!)

When I first got my ipad the other year I bought oodles of drawing apps and then found that I didn't really enjoy using them that much (I prefer paper and pen). But there is one drawing app I'm quite a fan of even though it has fewer options than apps like Sketch Club or SketchBook and that is Paper (53). At first I didn't like it that much because it was hard to undo stuff and there are not any layer options AND worst of all you have to pay extra for different options. Now, however, I really appreciate the limits of the app because it feels much more like a sketchbook (you have to just go with your mistakes and you can even flip through it like a sketchbook and choose different sketchbook covers). Anywho, here are some doodles I did on it last night and this morning . . .

15. Making Marks - Searching for Patterns

More creative exercises to play with. This time I picked up my black pen and scribbled unplanned 'marks' on a page, then decided they somewhat resembled leaves and so drew a whole lot of those, spacing them out in a grid. After which I sketched out their outlines, and finally, still exploring and playing (couldn't stop myself!), I added colour.

The original marks were made on paper but I scanned that and the outlines were worked on in Photoshop. I filled the colour in with marker pens on paper as well, and that too was then scanned in and finished up in Adobe Photoshop. Had tons of fun.

Now I just have to figure out what my next step might be ... Cheers!

16. a shaggy dog's tale

click on drawing to view
On Saturday our sketchcrawl group attended an open day for a park in Sheffield. It was an afternoon choc full of all sorts of drawing opportunitiess. There was music, dancing, food all the kind of stuff you'd expect to find at such an event. I managed to make a few drawings which I'll post shortly, but for now, I'll leave you with a drawing from my favourite part of the day; the dog show. And, specifically the 'waggiest tail' round.

Now, I don't know if you've ever tried to draw the waggiest tail round of a dog show? Well, if not, I can tell you, it's not easy. There's a whole lot of wagging going on.

17. Finding Inspiration in Shapes - Circles

Looking for inspiration in shapes I see around me. Circles. I took tons of photos but here are three of them.

65-1.2-Circles1

After which I did a bit of an exercise with all that inspiration! Used the rose in the above photograph, got my pencils and pens out, and started playing ...

65-1.2-Shapes-rose

Quite enjoyed that. Have a lot of catching up to do this week, so there's long way to go as yet ... Cheers!

19. Art Night

We had a small art night on Friday, which turned into more of a watch Kung Fu Panda 2 party, but I managed to do a few little doodles . . .

I might be a bit narwhal obsessed right now, but really who can help but love the unicorn of the sea! I have a few in this post, but you should see my sketchbook. Pages of narwhals!

Of course, I had to do at least one dragon.

And some monsters!
And an alien with a wicked cool laser.
And end with another narwhal!

20. BEA revisited - The Zentangle

I discovered Zentangles at BEA a few years ago.  Now, Design Originals has put out several books featuring this unique "doodle" technique.  Zentangles are hugely interesting to look at and they appear to be easy to create.

Zentangle Basics describes the process of dividing your design space and adding elements; curves, contrasts, lines, swirls, etc.  Design Originals also offers books using Zentangles in fabric arts, fashion design and as a de-stresser.

Check out this creative sketching technique.  And check out Design Originals.  Zentangles are just one of their many clever how-to guides.

21. Awesome Scanners Unite!

I am looking into upgrading my scanner to an awesome large format scanner . . .  The problem is there are A LOT of potentially awesome and potentially not so awesome scanners out there.  I kinda want the awesome one.

So here's where you come in . . .  Do you have any advice on what scanner I should get?  What have you learned from your own experience?

Do unicorn coasters help?

Thanks for the input!
Ben

24. Oodles of Doodles

In preparation for two big upcoming craft shows, I've been doodling up a storm and matting and framing. The East Greenich Art Festival is September 1 & 2, and the Scituate Art Festival is October 6,7, & 8.

This is my first time at both festivals and I'm really hoping I can transform all this painting and work into some extra income. This will also be the first time I've included frames for some of the paintings so I'll be curious to know if that helps or hinders sales.

Some recently finished pieces:
