28. Whose At The Door?

Just a few minutes ago my little dog Violet started barking!  I opened the front door and found a brown box. The return address? NY, NY!

“It’s Peepsqueak!” I yelled!

I pulled at the sticky packing tape and ripped open the box! Oh my goodness!  Peepsqueak was all packaged up with his own tag. Next I had to cut him out of a plastic bag!  I will have to talk to Beth at Harper Collins about giving him breathing holes next time. He was no worse for wear and now is sitting  comfortably on a chair in my family room.

Merry Makers is the toy company that made Peepsqueak They have made other fun characters like Olivia, Splat the Cat, Lama Lama, Junie B. Jones and more.  Peepsqueak has not stopped talking about them since he came.

Merry Makers has decided to license Peepsqueak for all the world to buy! How exciting!   Keep an eye out for him come late January.http://www.merrymakersinc.com/index.html

Peepsqueak Rock On!

Progress on book 2

Peepsqueak’s second book is well on the way to meeting the deadline of November 15th. My next step in the process is the fun part!  Adding COLOR!

What you are looking at in the picture (above) are all my pages laid out. There are scans, sketches, finished ink drawings and notes from the editor for each page. Here is an example of an unfinished page. I started coloring the deer and the fox!  Stay posted!  I will show you the finished page later!

31. A New blog: Daredevil Chicken

Just a quick note here about a new blog I started with funny illustrator Scott Nelson as we collaborate on a 32-page picture book about a Daredevil Chicken. How will two illustrators with two different styles come together in a book? Please check it out if you love the picture book making process, creativity, collaborations, and a chicken in between.

32. Chickens Revisited

I'm busy working on increasing my digital portfolio right now by reworking some older work. These chickens have long been a favorite of mine, but I was never happy with the background. I love the new digital version. It's more happy and cozy, if that makes sense.

Here's the all color pencil version.

33. Best Internet: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road (LOL)?

SARAH PALIN:  The chicken crossed the road because gosh-darn it, he's a maverick!

BARACK OBAMA:  The chicken crossed the road because it was time for change!  The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MC CAIN:  My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON:  When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH:  We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY:  Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL:  Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON:  I did not cross the road with that chicken.

AL GORE:  I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY:  Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

AL SHARPTON:  Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL:  The problem we have here is that this chicken won't
realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the
road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his current problems before adding new problems.

OPRAH:  Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems,
which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a NEW CAR so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

Being wet made Harriet absolutely cranky and very very mad, which caused all the other chickens in the coop to walk on eggshells.

37. Illustration Friday- CHICKEN!!!

So my plan for world domination with chickens is finally here! I suggested this week's Illustration Friday topic years ago, so it was quite unexpected. Perhaps its a sign that I should go back to doing IF more.

Well, the pressure is on to come up with some awesome chicken stuff, but I've been drawing tons of chickens already in the past 6 months with my sketchbook project, so those of you new to the blog, please check it out here. I started working on this Super Chickens Club zine just for fun, I'm not sure where its going but thought it would make a clucking good submission.

Bawk bawk bawk!

38. Illustration Friday - Chicken

I think I'm starting to love painting in Photoshop. I wanted a new avatar in honor of Jannie Ho's Chicken week on Illustration Friday, but this guy needed a new background and foreground. I spent a few moments in Photoshop and voila! Only the chicken is in color pencil.

Here's the original I pulled this lady out from. I'll be updating it soon.

40. Illustration Friday: "Chicken"

Two different illustrations for the topic "Chicken".
The first illustration is for the current children's book I am illustrating for Sylvan Dell, titled "Prairie Storms" (2011).  It is a prairie chicken, also known as a prairie grouse.
The second is a coloring page I created, called"Chicken Dance".

41. Illustration Friday: “Chicken”

The prompt this week for Illustration Friday is “Chicken”, as suggested by Jannie Ho, a fellow IFKer! As for me, I thought I’d try a little word-play. I have more to draw up and will, if I have time during the week.  And be sure and check out the other entries by clicking on the link for IF, above. Lots of creative and fun solutions there!

43. Chicken ~ Illustration Friday

Poor Charlotte!
The invitation read: “Please join us in the country, and be a part of our celebration dinner!”
She became a little suspicious when Mrs. Fox added vegetables to her “before the party” bath water!

46. Poetry Friday: About Diwali and its Poetic Origins in the Ramayana

This year the Hindu festival of Diwali is from Nov. 5-9.   Today marks its beginning.  I first heard about the festival from watching a National Film Board film called Lights for Gita in their Talespinners Collection (a series of short films for 5-9 year olds.)  In this story, eight year old Gita, who lives in Montreal is excited about celebrating Diwali in her new country, but something unexpected happens — an ice storm knocks out power in the city.  What will Gita do?  Will this holiday celebrated with lights now be ruined for  her?  Check out the DVD by ordering it, or finding it at your local library!

PaperTigers with its focus on India this issue has a number of book suggestions about Diwali given in a revisited Personal Views article by Chad Stephenson.  Pooja Makhijani also refers to Diwali in her Personal Views article entitled “A String of Bright Lights.”  She mentions her Diwali book picks in a post she did for the children’s lit blog Chicken Spaghetti awhile back.  In her post, she mentions how in northern India, Diwali is a celebration of the homecoming of Ram whose story can be found in her suggested picture book title Rama and the Demon King: An Ancient Tale from India by Jessica Souhami.  I found Souhami’s book at my local library; it was a bilingual one in Somali and English!   The story of Rama is found in the Hindu text The Ramayana which is a 24, 000 couplet poem written in Sanskrit by Valmiki around 300 B.C.   My daughter’s view of this ancient story of Rama was rather quaint; she said she liked stories where the good guy (Rama) and a bad guy (Ravanna) fight it out over a woman (Sita)  — although in this case, the bad guy is terrifying ten-headed demon!

Hope you have a happy Diwali this year!  Poetry Friday is hosted by JoAnn at Teaching Authors.

49. Golden Kite Award for picture book text: Marion Dane Bauer

Not only did she give a beautiful keynote speech and teach a terrific class in picture book creation, Marion Dane Bauer is being honored today with a Golden Kite Award for the best picture book text of the year.

From the flap copy of THE LONGEST NIGHT:

It is the longest night of the year, and the snow lies deep. All through the forest, animals long for dawn's warmth. Strong and clever creatures boast that only they can bring back the sun. But the wind knows better. The wind calls Chickadee, whose simple song wakes the sun. In this lyrical story from Marion Dane Bauer with breathtaking watercolors by Ted Lewin, it will take a tiny and gentle creature to summon a new day.

Lin Oliver says this about the book: "The language is poetic and perfect, each word conveying meaning and sound at the same time."

Marion originally was asked to write a picture book about St. Lucia's Day. It was tempting, of course, to write the real story of the saint, a woman who refused to marry a non-Christian and later served up her breasts on a silver platter to her parents.* But her passion lay with the Winter Solstice. She wrote more than fourteen drafts to get the book just so.

We're thrilled for her.

Learn more about Marion Dane Bauer on her website.

*Today's chicken breasts were not in homage to St. Lucia. We can't believe you even thought that.

50. Gardening with chickens & ingenious bookstore event

A bunch of you have written asking for chicken update pictures. Earlier this week, BH and I took a couple of the girls out to help us weed the flower beds.

They are bug-eating machines.

A man and his chicks.

Along with the garden (we've been eating the first peas this week) and the chickens, we've been busy in the Forest preparing for ALA and this fall's book tour. I'll post my ALA schedule early next week. I'm not sure when I'll have the tour details... certainly by August. I'll be on the road a LOT, so I will probably be showing up wherever you live. If you bring your chickens to my booksigning, I will pet them.

On Monday night, we enjoyed a special book event, courtesy of the river's end bookstore. Author Michael Perry is on tour promoting his new book, COOP, as well as his other titles.

(His books make EXCELLENT Father's Day gifts, btw - funny and heartfelt.) Michael is a small-town guy, like us, and is interested in encouraging people to buy local and live sustainably. Instead of the standard booksigning, for his event the bookstore took over a new restaurant in Oswego - La Parrilla.

The restaurant was chosen because of its commitment to buying from local farmers. Guests had to buy tickets ahead of time - cost of book was included in the price of the ticket, as well as dinner.  The event sold out, we all enjoyed a very yummy dinner, and left with sore ribs from laughing so much because Michael Perry is a very funny guy.

Michael is posting on Shelf Awareness every day on his tour. His blog entry about Oswego gives his take on the evening.

I'll be spending Father's Day with these two guys - my husband and my dad. I am in charge of deviled eggs and potato salad. They are in charge of the beer.

See you on Monday!
