The myth that publishers have stacks of manuscripts and that writers have to line up in a long queue was deflated by Jennifer Bacia during her talk at the Gold Coast Writers Association meeting . ‘Actually, that is not the case’ she stated. According to Jennifer, publishers are always looking for something that will make […]
You may remember way back in January when I announced that I would have a short story appearing in the upcoming HarperTeen anthology DEFY THE DARK, that I said there'd be more exciting news about how YOU could be in the anthology too. Well, that day has finally arrived!
HarperTeen and Figment have opened up the DEFY THE DARK Short Story Contest.
This cover is NOT FINAL, but isn't it pretty?
The contest is open to any unpublished writer, or published writer who has earned less than $2000 from their writing. All you need to do is write a 2000-4000 word story of any genre that mostly takes place at night, or in the dark.
You can be creative with this. It doesn't have to be dark and scary. A girl sneaking out at night to meet her secret crush fits just as well as those creepy things that go bump in the night.
You have until September 1st to write an upload your story to Figment. The winner gets:
- The winner will get paid and have their story published in DEFY THE DARK!
- Two second place winners will also win cash prizes from HarperCollins and have their stories published on the Defy The Dark website.
So what are you waiting for? Get all the contest details at the Figment.com DEFY THE DARK contest page!
My story,
The Mechanical Heart of Him, is now available to read over at the Daily Science Fiction website. Here there be little folk and visible hearts.
Thank you to all subscribers who read, tweeted and emailed me about the story last week.

This weekend, I found my Easter stickers! This set is sold exclusively at Target, thanks to Peaceable Kingdom Press. I wish it was displayed at a better location, it was hiding in the back of the card section. But of course its always thrilling to find my art at a store, especially at a big one like Target.
I have a new book for Easter, titled
Peek Inside-It's Easter Time! published by Running Press Kids. It is similar in format for the one I did for
Halloween by the same author, Megan E. Bryant. It is a story/activity/sticker book all rolled into one.
You can get it on
Amazon or your local indie bookstore. Happy Easter!
This is a sticker set I did for
Peaceable Kingdom Press. Can I get a "cluck cluck" for chicken stickers?
There are three play boards and three sheets of vinyl cling stickers. I'm always happy to draw anything farm related.
You can get buy it

Why Every Man Should Update His Wife.
Warning – for men only.
Exploring men’s sexuality in graphic detail, this controversial book delves into motivation, purpose and futility of persisting with unsatisfactory relationships.
It exposes stark views on marriage, on having children and apparently worthless social values.
$3.99 AUD is a fair price for eBook WHY EVRY MAN SHOULD UPDATE HIS WIFE!
To buy – go to Hot Digital Books and read more.
I got a chance last year to work with a UK publisher, Campbell Books. They are so friendly and easy to work with and I really had fun with their projects. This is a magnetic play book titled Muddle London, being released today! There are a set of magnets in which you can position onto the pages.
As much as I would like to think I'm a world traveler, I have never been to London before, so it was alot like doing research before a big trip. Now I know exactly where to go and what to do if I was to go there. Some day!
I got to draw the Queen of England which I find quite funny, portraiture is not exactly my specialty. Did I get a good resemblance?
It was also a good challenge for me to do a spread with a map scene (something that is based on real info.) I've come to enjoy doing them and hope to do more of these.
Its available on
Amazon.co.uk! Wish I could see this in the stores in the UK!
This is a elephant I made almost a year ago. It's one of the twenty illustrations that are being published by Zwijsen Belgium. Hope this happy elephant can make your monday happy as well. :)
I worked on this cute little paperback joke book for HarperCollins before I worked on Road Work Ahead. It was where I got the idea to start making dummies of the sketches. There were alot of lift-a-flaps inside to work out, and the art director had sent me this dummy that they did after I submitted the sketches to them. I thought it was really useful. There were at least 2 flaps but 4 jokes on each spread. The biggest challenge was the layout. Leaving room for the text, but having the flaps work out too. Now I have a whole new appreciation for books with flaps (especially where there is art on the other side!) |
Knock knock! Who's there? Ghouls! Ghouls who? |
|
Ghouls and boys both love Halloween! |
Overall, I love working on Halloween books, they give me a chance to do something funky and use a different color palette than usual. Grab a copy here :-)
Its October and I'm happy to say I have another Halloween book out this year, this time its Halloween Howlers: Frightfully Funny Knock-Knock Jokes written by Michael Teitelbaum, illustrated by me, published by Harper Festival. Its got tons of lift-a-flaps on every spread and I'll be showing more of that in another post. In the meanwhile, I want to thank Ann Arbor with Kids for a wonderful review of the book. You can also get it on Amazon, BN, or your favorite indie bookstore. More Halloween fun to come!
Mister Doppelganger: A Ghost Story by Amy Freeman is the ‘ghostwritten’ account of one fiery pre-teen’s adventures, or is that misadventures, with her friends when they vow to unravel the secrets surrounding their mysterious and cantankerous schoolteacher, Mister Doppelganger. The good fun leads them on a wild journey filled with ghosts-sightings, snake charmers and Avon [...]
John Pate’s breathtakingly raucous children’s picture book, Harvel Goes to the Farm, is irreverent and wise. In a similar vein to Everyone Poops and The Gas We Pass, Pate shares the utterly fabulous, wildly original tale of Harvel, a moose readers meet while on his way to visit his aunt and uncle in Nebraska. While [...]
Lloyd is a sweet young goat that moves to a new farm with a new family. Lloyd becomes best friends with a sweet box turtle named Phil, while she shows him how life goes on the farm with all the other animals. Lloyd learns that there are a lot of entertaining animals on the farm, [...]
My story 'And, the Bride Wore Ashes' is now available to read at
Phantasmacore.
It's my tale of a jilted Buster Keatonesque groom, a wedding dress made of moths and a snow globe.
I hope you like it and I also hope you'll comment over at the site if you do (or don't). It's my first story available to read online since last September. I need to pull my socks up.
It was fun collaborating with
Picture Window Books to create these two titles for their
You Can Draw series,
Zoo Animals, and
Monsters and Other Scary Things.
They are simple how-to books for kids to learn how to draw, with basic shapes broken down. For me, it was fun sneaking a funky chicken in there. Just another little thing to help with my world domination with chickens.

Hi everyone! I’m so excited my kid’s book I illustrated ‘Hear My Prayer’, by Lee Bennett Hopkins is finally available in stores. The stores websites have previews of what the book looks like inside. Here’s another preview of one of my favorite illustrated spreads from the book, which was a […]
Its wonderful to kick off 2011 with the release of this board book I illustrated,
What Does Cow Say? written by Joan Holub, published by Scholastic/Cartwheel books. It is a lift-a-flap book where you get to lift the mouth of the animals and see what they say.
I'll be talking a bit more about the process in making this book, but in the meanwhile, check out the author Joan Holub's interesting
post on the 2 pg dummy she submitted to the publisher for this book.
And hey, this is the first time I have a rooster on the cover of one of my books. Possibly the beginning of my chicken world dominance?
Over at Tangent Online they've reviewed the anthology 'The Company He Keeps', here's a little of what Maria Lin had to say about my story 'The Hollow Framework for the Cotton Man'...
“The Hollow Framework for the Cotton Man” comes at a perfect time of year, and adds a little more creepiness to farm fields already made terrifying by prior horror stories. While having a scarecrow chase you is rather high on the scary factor, the toll man in the story is one of those insane and amicable sorts..." Read the rest of the review

Googled: How to board a zeppelin?
Where I insist: Despite the steampunkish presence of zeppelins this book is not, I repeat not, steampunk.
Reference to Famous Person: Glenn Miller
Things determined to scupper me: New starter at work absconded which means I'm on overtime duty. Bah Humbug! I'm trying to write a book, people. WTF. You couldn't do this to me in October. Digs in heels. I will win this battle even if I have to get up at 3 a.m.
This is my weekend. This pretty pile of paper. Draft two of a story with ugly sentences in red and notes on things to fix in the margins. By the end of Sunday, I want to have almost no red and most of the comment boxes deleted.
I need this story out the door by next week so I can concentrate on finalising my NaNoWriMo plans. Walter (my dictaphone) is also holding three stories for me--one most definitely pants, one WTF, and one shiver-down-my-spine-creepy. I'd also like to edit one or two of the stories on my jingle bell line before hibernating in my new book. Ooh, new book. Excited now. Excited is so much better than overwhelmed.
In pretty news,
Strange Men in Pinstripe Suits is now available to buy at
Amazon.com - treble the excitement. I expect to be a millionaire by next week. In the ranking sense that is. My book's rank started (okay, first time I checked in) at 97,677, and has steadily dropped to 153,853 during the day. Boy, those guys sell a lot of books. That's 60,000ish shifted in about 7 hours. Bloody hell. Of course, I might be getting the math totally wrong, but still, they're mega busy and that's good for us right. People are buying books. Now I need to torture people into buying mine.
Something is wrong with that last sentence.
Last year, I worked on a fun project called My Better World Savings Bank. It is a high quality wooden house bank that has three compartments, and it teaches kids about spending, saving, and sharing. It comes with tons of stickers to decorate the house with and a passbook to keep track of expenses.
Along with founder John Weatherley and designer Alex Knowlton, I illustrated the stickers and the art work for the site. You can buy the bank online or check out some useful links to teach children to be financially smart!
Hi everyone, I have a fresh website with some new colourful illustrations and surface pattern designs. Also, I'm featured in Augusts Digital Artist Magazine with a tutorial, on detailing line art :)
New work called Tron Down Town... more here
