4. Weekend Watching: Rep. John Lewis and Jon Stewart talking graphic novels

2015-03-10-Daily-Show-books

Let’s end up this week in comics with an inspiring event: Rep. John Lewis’s full half appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Monday. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and that by itself is inspiring enough. There was much discussion of the two March graphic novels as well, though. Just think how a graphic novel is being discussed as an influential part of inspiring today’s youth with the history of the civil rights movement…a movement that very much needs to be revived in light of today’s racial inequities…well, comics should be proud.

You can watch the entire segment here.

This is the first time that the Daily Show has ever featured a graphic novel. And it could be the last…

There’s also a tumblr post up with some stills and gifs…and 44,000 notes.

5. Video Sunday: “I’ve promised it to Publishers’ Monthly”

See now, this is what I get for waiting when I see a good video.  I’ve been doing my Video Sundays a little less frequently since I like to do them when the content is primo.  The flipside is that sometimes I get scooped.  Such is the case with today’s video.  It is a delight and I have watched it multiple times, but it’s not as new as it once was.  No matter.  You will enjoy it thoroughly, I think.  Thanks to Jon Scieszka and, by extension, Lisa Brown for the link.

Next up, a triple threat.  He writes books like Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities (which I have read and thoroughly enjoyed).  He blogs at Mike Jung’s Little Bloggy Wog.  But the kicker?  He sings.  And goldurnit . . . he’s good.

Brother Iz step aside.  I may have to rework my children’s book boy band roster around to include him.  Dude has pipes.

Speaking of music, I am of the opinion that a catchy score can make or break a book trailer.  Example A: As the Crow Flies by Sheila Keenan and Kevin Duggan.  Catchy as all get out.

And where would this little trailer for the oh-so Canadian Little Jack Horner LIVE from the Corner be without its catchy tunes?  Only author Helaine Becker and illustrator Mike Boldt know for sure.

In other news, J.K. Rowling was in town.  Care to watch her chatter?  Here’s the uncut interview with Jon Stewart in all it Daily Showy glory.

Finally, our off-topic video comes to us from good man Mike Lewis.  As he says, it’s the reactions that make this one a classic.

Love it!

6. What Is It Like to Visit The Colbert Report & The Daily Show with Your Book?

Stanford University assistant professor of history Jennifer Burns had the great fortune to talk about her writing on both The Colbert Report and The Daily Show.

Over at the Oxford University Press blog, she compared the differences between the shows–some handy intelligence for writers who hope to be on the show someday. Burns is the author of Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right. Follow this link to watch The Daily Show interview. We’ve embedded the Colbert interview above.  Check it out:

The biggest difference, of course, is Jon vs. Stephen, but I had an unexpected reaction. Where most people seem to think Stephen Colbert would be a more difficult interview, I actually found him to be personally warmer and easier to talk to than Jon Stewart. Some of this was because I felt more confident the second time around. But the interview itself was also less serious and more of a performance, whereas on The Daily Show I felt I was being grilled by a formidable intellect …The Colbert producer also did a great job of helping me understand what would create a good interview. Her top piece of advice (which I also heard at The Daily Show): “Don’t be funny!”

Trident Media Group, the literary agency representing Deepak Chopra, Paris Hilton, Jon Stewart, Tori Spelling and a long list of other authors, has launched Trident E-Book Operations.

The new division will “create, manage and implement innovative e-book strategies including the distribution of a variety of e-books directly to a large number of e-tailers in North America and internationally.” In addition, they will consult with authors about everything from digital design to social media to exploring new relationships with “traditional and non-traditional publishers.” Lyuba DiFalco and Nicole Robson have been appointed co-directors of e-book operations.

In the release, Trident chairman Robert Gottlieb explained: “Trident will not become a publisher, but will instead continue in its new e-book operations to have itself aligned with its clients whose interests we serve as an agent and manager.”

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, eight out of the top ten titles on college campuses are nonfiction books. Decision Points by George W. Bush topped the list.

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson were the only fiction books on the list. Life by Keith Richards and The Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1 by Mark Twain joined Bush’s memoir on the list. Humor titles by Jon Stewart and Tucker Max also made the cut.

19. Post Daily Show: Daniel Sperling

Daniel Sperling is a Professor of Engineering and Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California, Davis and a Founding Director of US-Davis’s Institute of Transportation Studies. He and Deborah Gordon wrote Two Billion Cars: Driving Towards Sustainability which provides a concise history of America’s love affair with cars and an overview of the global oil and auto industries. Check out the video below to see Sperling’s appearance on The Daily Show.

We decided it would be fun to ask Sperling some questions before and after his big television appearance. After the video are the post-show questions. Click here to read the pre-show questions.  Read other OUPblog posts about this book here.

OUPblog: What advice would you give authors preparing to go on the show?

Daniel Sperling: Watch previous interviews, try to stay calm, have a glass of wine, and pray for the best. Try to formulate your main messages but don’t count of articulating more than 1 or two.

OUPblog: Was it what you expected, did you get your key sound byte in?

Sperling: I got 2 of my 5 or so main points across. I guess that is a success?!

OUPblog: What was the green room like?!

Sperling: Perfectly comfortable and pleasant, but way overhyped. Light green walls, flat screen TV, sofa, bag of goodies (the best being a Jon Stewart cap and t-shirt).

20. Pre-Daily Show: Daniel Sperling

Be sure to watch tonight when Daniel Sperling is interviewed on The Daily Show.

We decided it would be fun to ask Sperling some questions before and after his big television appearance. Below are the pre-show questions. Check back tomorrow to watch a clip and read the post-show interview.  Read other OUPblog posts about this book here.

OUPblog: Do you watch The Daily Show and have you ever fantasized about being a guest?

Daniel Sperling: Yes, I watch, but I never even fantasized about being a guest—even though all my friends and students now say I have reached the highest state of coolness; one (young) professor friend now says he idolizes me.

OUPblog: What advice have people given you about going on the show?

Sperling: Roll with the jokes, don’t even think about trying to be funny, be succinct, know your key messages, don’t wear white shirts or patterned jackets, have fun.

OUPblog: What is the one thing you would like people to take away from your interview?

Sperling: It’s time for all of us to engage in solving the oil and climate challenges and, to quote our president, yes we can.

21. The Abramoff Net

There's another man recently indicted in the on-going Abramoff investigations. Wendy has a good post with some great links about the recent indictment of Todd Boulanger.

For another look at Todd Boulanger, you can also watch this hilarious video from The Daily Show.

It makes a great point, not directly related to the matter of corruption. But where corruption attempts to distort the political system with gifts and kickbacks, the use of these political pundits distorts it in a just as insidious manner.

22. From Gloomy to Goofy

It's still Chanukah. Just when you thought you were done giving presents, we've got three crazy nights to go. If my daughters are reading this, the best stuff has already come out so would you like to stop now while you're ahead?

Never one to be the Debbie Downer in the room, here's a totally silly Chanukah/Christmas song from the genius minds of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. I cannot believe I missed the entire Colbert holiday show a few weeks ago. (Time Warner! Hands off the YouTube clips, please!) I just saw this segment from the show and I knew I had to post it here. According to my Live Journal, I am one gimmel short of a miserable dreidel

and there's no way I can leave that impression hanging in the air. So go ahead now and laugh. That's good for you, too. In fact, studies show it's even better than crying.

23. Reflecting on The Daily Show

In the post below David D. Perlmutter, a professor in the KU School of Journalism & Mass Communications, and author of Blogwars, reflects on his appearance on The Daily Show. Read other blog posts by Perlmutter here.

Just finished taping The Daily Show. I was interviewed by Stewart himself. What stuck me was how the discussion about blogging was pretty straight and without any real mockery. I argue in Blogwars that 2008 is the year blogging has arrived—becoming part of journalism, entertainment media, and, of course politics. Well, I think one sign is that instead of making fun of bloggers as geeks and freaks Stewart himself stated that many talented people blog and that blogs were no longer a fringe phenomenon. That’s a significant leap from the past. Lets spin back to when that was not so. Bloggers recall the March 2004 segment of The Daily Show that made fun of blogs and blogging via a satirical segment on “$ecret$ of New Journalism $ucce$$.” Jay Rosen, an NYU professor and one of the early academic proponents of blogging was roundly skewered by a TDS correspondent.

So it’s lucky for me that blogs have some so far!

By the way, in person Stewart is gracious and really puts guests—like, say, nervous academics—at ease.

24. Unfair isn't funny

Those who know me will know that I am a huge fan of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I'd been trying to get tickets for the last two years, and finally, last June I think it was, I was successful in nabbing two tickets for January 31st, 2008.

But then came the Writers' Strike, and I've been angsting back and forth about attending - kinda like this:

In the end, I did a Jewish thing. I went, but felt REALLY guilty about it.

I spoke to the people on the picket line about the strike, and what we can do to help.

Here's an interesting piece of data. When you buy the Daily Show on iTunes for $1.99, Viacom gets $1.45.
The writers', on the other hand, get a big fat ZERO.

Bear Stearns wrote recently that "the impact of accepting the writers' proposal is largely negligible - less than 1% of annual earnings per share for the media companies.

Here's an explanation of the issues involved by the striking Daily Show writers - it's worth watching to remind yourself of why we miss these guys so much.

Help the Daily Show writers by calling Viacom executives and tell them to come back to the table and give the writers a fair share of the content they've created.

Numbers:

Sumner Redstone (Owner, Viacom) 212 975 4321
Phillipe Dauman (CEO, Viacom) 212 258 6000

You can also go to http://www.strikeswag.com to buy a t-shirt. Profits go to the WGA Union Solidarity Fund.

Now can I just have a brief fangirl moment?

You're not allowed to take any photos in the studio, but this was in the holding room outside. I was really psyched because Rob Riggle was the "reporter" in last night's show - he and John Oliver are my favorite of the current reporters. They also have a stand-up guy to warm up the crowd before the taping - last night it was Paul Mecurio, who was both extremely funny and extremely raunchy. After listening to him I understood why you aren't welcome at a Daily Show taping unless you're 18.

Jon Stewart answered a few questions before the taping and spoke briefly afterwards. He's funny off the cuff, as you might expect. I'd seen him do his stand-up routine two years ago, and laughed so hard my face hurt - it was right after Scooter Libby was indicted and he did this hilarious riff about how a guy named "Scooter" might do in prison.

Anyway, I still feel conflicted about having gone, but was told by one of the striking writers that I'm not a scab - I'd only be a scab if I wrote for the Daily Show (in my dreams, maybe) and went back to work.
I do plan to try to get tickets again for when the strike is over - I hope that the studios give the writers their fair share SOON!
