In which Serena Agusto-Cox of Savvy Verse and Wit discovers the breadcrumb clues I've been leaving for readers all along, book to book. So many thanks for this truly gorgeous review of
This Is the Story of You.
From the end of the review:
This Is the Story of You by Beth Kephart will astonish you with the resilience of young people, their drive to make things right, and their ability to withstand more than expected, but it is in the final pages that the true mystery is resolved. I will say this, I’m not often surprised by book endings or mysteries, but Kephart exceeded my detective skills for the first time in a long while. (I had suspicions, but not a fully formed conclusion.) Readers who love to immerse themselves in realistic places and explore humanity won’t be disappointed. Kephart is a talent at creating places that come alive and characters that grab hold of us emotionally.
**You’ve probably already suspected this is a contender for the best of 2016 list at the end of the year!**
I'll be signing
THIS IS THE STORY OF YOU, my Jersey Shore novel (Chronicle Books), tomorrow, Saturday, April 30, 2 PM, in celebration of Independent Bookstore Day. Hope to see you at Main Point Books in Bryn Mawr, PA.
I love the sea, I love the shore, I wonder about storms and now, the mysteries of family and friendship.
I wrote of these things.
I hope to see you there. Not a reading, just a signing. Come any time between 2 and 3 PM.
So grateful for this opportunity in the Philadelphia Inquirer today.
I'll post the live link tomorrow.
In the meantime, for more on this book—the reviews, the story—please go

In less than five weeks,
This Is the Story of You, my Jersey Shore novel, will be released by Chronicle Books. A Junior Library Guild selection that has received two early stars, this is a mystery set in the wake of a monster storm. It's a meditation on our environment and an exploration of friendship, sisterhood, loss, and resilience.
It is, perhaps, the most urgent novel I've yet written, both in terms of themes and pacing.
On March 18, in the New York Public Library, as part of the
New York City Teen Author Festival, I'll be reading from the book and talking about the perspective adults bring to the novels they write about teens in a panel gorgeously assembled by David Levithan and featuring Carolyn Mackler, Luanne Rice, and Francisco Stork. On March 20, I'll be signing early copies at New York City's iconic Books of Wonder. And on April 30, at Main Point Books in Bryn Mawr, PA, I'll be doing a signing.
This morning I'm sharing this scene.
Here I should probably explain the rules, the lines in the sand, the ins and outs of Haven. We were a people shaped by extremes. Too much and too little were in our genes.
To be specific:
Too little was the size of things—the dimension of our island, the we-fit-inside-it-bank-turned-school, the quality of restaurants, the quantity of bridges.
Too much was The Season—Memorial Day through Labor Day. Vacationeers by the boatload, bikinis by the square inch, coolers by the mile, a puke-able waft of SPFs. The longest lines at night were at Dippy’s Icy Creams.
The longest lines by day circled the lighthouse. During The Season the public trash bins were volcanic eruptions, the songbirds were scarce, the deer hid where you couldn’t find them, the hamburgers were priced like mini filets mignons, and the rentable bikes streamed up, streamed down. At the Mini Amuse the Giant Wheel turned, the Alice in Wonderland teased, the dozen giraffes on the merry-go-round looked demoralized and beat. At Dusker’s Five and Dime the hermit crabs in the painted shells sold for exorbitant fees.
Whoever was up there in the little planes that dragged the advertising banners around would have looked down and seen the flopped hats, crusted towels, tippy shovels, broken castles, and bands of Frisbee fliers—Vacationeers, each one. Whoever was up there looking down would not have seen the bona fides, the Year-Rounders, the us, because we weren’t on the beach. We were too employed renting out the bikes, flipping the burgers, scooping the Dippy’s, cranking up the carousel, veering the Vacationeers out of riptides—to get out and be seen. From the age of very young we had been taught to maximize The Season, which was code for keeping the minimum wage coming, which was another way of saying that we stepped out of the way, we subserved, for the three hot months of summer.
We Year-Rounders had been babies together, toddlers together, kindergartners together, Alabasterans. We had a pact: Let the infiltrators be and watch them leave and don’t divide to conquer. We knew that what mattered most of all was us, and that we’d be there for us, and that we would not allow the outside world to actually dilute us. Like I said,we knew our water.
Six miles long.
One-half mile wide. Haven.
Go forth and conquer together.
Because there were not enough well-muscled guys in comic books, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is getting his own comic book, to be published by Wizard World and MPS Entertainment. The cover for the book—which will be released at Wizard World Chicago—has just been revealed and it’s by Greg Horn. The interiors have been fashioned by Paul Jenkins, Talent Caldwell, and Paul Mounts.
While some will think this is a new low for the comics medium, Wizard World has a plan for it. We had a lovely breakfast with Wizard president John Macaluso a few weeks back and he explained that, unbeknownst to the nerd-unfriendly world of the Jersey Shore, Sorrentino has always been a comics fan, a love which he clearly sublimated to the kind of mind-bogglingly idiotic shenanigans as seen on The Jersey Shore and beyond.
Now however, he’s able to let his freak flag fly with the rest of the nerds. According to Macaluso, this is actually a way to market comics to that segment of the population that still doesn’t give a shit about them. “Why not expose his 1 million Twitter followers to comics?” Macaluso told us. Indeed, Sitch has already tweeted the details to his 1.3 million followers, who are doubtless scouring Previews now to pre-order.
“The Situation” as a superhero is about to become reality. Just weeks after announcing his latest venture, an “abs-first” foray into the world of comics, pop culture icon and reality television star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is unveiling the cover of his Situation comic book produced by Wizard World and MPS Entertainment and painted by superstar artist Greg Horn. The first books are due on shelves in time for Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, August 9-12, at which Sorrentino will make his first appearance in support of the new project.
The first artwork depicts “The Situation” fully charged and ready to go.
“I was confident that an amazing artist like Greg Horn would come up with a great look, but I was still blown away by his painting,” said Sorrentino. “It has me more excited than ever to see what’s coming next.”
The team of artists and writers collaborating on the effort include Eisner Award winning writer Paul Jenkins (Wolverine: Origins, Batman, Hulk, Spider-Man), pencil and inks by Talent Caldwell (Superman, X-Men, G.I. Joe), and coloring by Paul Mounts (Avengers, Ultimate X-Men, Wolverine, and Thor).
“This team we’ve assembled is our commitment to put out a comic book of the highest quality that will have a compelling story and amazing art,” said John Macaluso, Wizard World CEO. “Our creative team is hard at work creating a book that will appeal to a wide new audience, and will also interest long-time comic fans.”

Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi will be writing a second book. CNN reports that Simon & Schuster plans to release Gorilla Beach on May 15, 2012.
Here’s more about the book: “Giovanna ‘Gia’ Spumanti and her cousin Isabella ‘Bella’ Rizzoli are going to have the sexiest summer ever. While they couldn’t be more different—pint-size Gia is a carefree, outspoken party girl and Bella is a tall, slender athlete who always holds her tongue—for the next month they’re ready to pouf up their hair, put on their stilettos, and soak up all that Seaside Heights, New Jersey, has to offer: hot guidos, cool clubs, fried Oreos, and lots of tequila.’”
In her author video, Polizzi (pictured, via) did say that she wanted to write more books in the future. When her first novel, A Shore Thing, was first released in January, one publishing executive told The Hollywood Reporter: “The book didn’t do as well as it could have because rather than a tell-all, it was disguised as a novel.” (Via Sarah Weinman)

Tired of reading about Jersey Shore book deals? Literature has finally struck back.
In the video embedded above, two stars of an Oscar Wilde play on Broadway launched a video series–reading Jersey Shore dialogue in the style of Wilde’s play.
Here’s more about the video: “What if the characters of Broadway’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” traveled through a time warp and woke up on the beach with Snooki, The Situation and the rest of the gang of MTV’s Jersey Shore? In an exclusive video series created for Playbill by ‘Earnest’ stars Santino Fontana and David Furr, the Roundabout Theatre Company cast puts “Jersey” in the mouths of Oscar Wilde’s famed Britons. Think of it as a comedy of bad manners.” (Via)

…this was an article.
yes! finally!!!
The comics industry is saved!
Now that the solicits are out, will Wizard free the creative team’s loved ones?
Paul Jenkins has Fallen very, very far.
You’re welcome, America!!
Greg Horn cover? Why am I not surprised?
“Why not expose his 1 million Twitter followers to comics?” Macaluso told us.
. . .unbeknownst to the nerd-unfriendly world of the Jersey Shore . . .
That’s a rhetorical question, right?
I’ll give this to Macaluso for free: polybagged variant edition that smells like stale beer and Axe body spray.
Ten bucks says Jenkins was given an editorial mandate to not exceed 140 characters per caption or dialogue balloon. Don’t want to take any of those 1.3 million too far out of their element.
What did Greg Horn do to hooker number 1’s neck? The blonde one Christ something is very wrong there……
Does the Situation get super powers from a magic tanning bed? Because that is the only origin story that makes that cover make any sense.
Next they’ll do a Pauly D, Snookie, Ronnie etc. solo comics. THEN they’ll have them all meet in an eventual Jersey Shore ‘team comic’!
No one’s seen that before…
I will never be able to read another Paul Jenkins comic again with any amount of respect. Hopefully he phoned this one in and just took the paycheck, otherwise, wow.
Paul D, maybe Jenkins is just down w/the GTL?
(Gym, Tanning, Laundry – the only thing the guys on the show do, day after day. Besides getting drunk, squabbling amongst themselves, hooking up and getting into fights @clubs)
When can we expect the “16 & Pregnant” comic book?!?
I thought about maki9ng a comment about boycotting the other works of these creators ala Before Watchmen.
I also thought about cracking a joke about The Situation #254, where John Byrne’s grandson returns as writer/artist.
Instead, I think it’s safe to say that the comic book industry has had a good enough run. Time to shut out the lights and lock up the doors, boys.
