I was born in Russia but lived in America my whole life. Still I love to look back to my roots and explore the beautiful rich culture that my family is from. I love different cultures so I wanted to honor this one with this lovely piece. Originally I painted her for a Culture themed art show that I have curated about a year ago. Eventually I would love to explore other cultures and traditions as well.

Fellow artists and entrepreneurs, do you ever step back to really look where you are going with your work?

I have been thinking about my business lately, specifically about what is working and not working and what direction I want to go to. I realized that I don’t have a solid business plan or a clear idea of how to actually make money–or at least the amount I want in order to sustain a comfortable living. The truth is I have not been playing a large enough game. Instead I have been chasing after small goals. If  I am to really make a go at building a successful and thriving creative business, I need to adapt a business mindset.

I have had this inner struggle with myself for a while. My brain is battling between doing the stuff I love and hoping for sales vs. creating something that is more commercial, marketable and ultimately more profitable. So far I have been hustling at art shows, listing on Etsy and consigning at local boutique stores. Non of these actions are bringing in the kind of bucks I would like. So my new game plan is to start thinking bigger. One possibility that I have been toying with recently is art Licensing.

Periodically I go through my portfolio and evaluate the overall direction of my work, what needs to be taken out, what needs to be updated and what I need to build on. I am working on having 5 sections in my gallery:

Illustrations: My stand alone full colored pieces

Drawings: My sketches and doodles. Also includes some of my Pen & Ink illustrations. I want to be able to show how I come up  with ideas to potential clients.

Licensing Collections: This is the section where I will begin to show artwork that is fit for licensing on products.

Storybook: Illustrations for children and picture books. Sequential art that tells a story visually.

Spot illustrations: Artwork for products, spot illustration and simple designs

Mixed Media: My original mixed media pieces

My new plan is to create collections to start licensing my work. At the moment I am working on 4 fairy illustrations–fairies with animals. My plan is to have at least 4 collections before I begin to submit samples to manufactures.

Are you you living up to your fullest self expression? Self Expression is not about being driven by fear, anger or trying to prove yourself. Rather it is about pursuing a dream that you are most passionate about and having the courage to live as who you truly are. It may not be the safest route nor the easiest but is definitely the most rewarding.

I truly believe that doing what I am passionate about is the most important thing in the world. It is what lights me up and gives me the drive to go forward. It is what gets me up in the morning.
And its not that I don’t have doubts or fears. Many times I experience self doubt and uncertainty about the future. At least a few times a day a thought pops into my head about how it would be so much simpler to just get a “real job”. It would certainly make life a lot easier.
But at the end of the day, I go to sleep with no regrets. My life is filled with the things I love.

I don’t think its my job to preach to anyone what they should do with their lives. If you choose to live a life where you put aside your dream for the sake of stability and safety, than that is your choice–and its valid choice. You might have very good reasons. Just make sure that you can live with that choice.

I am committed to full self expression for myself and for others. I am a space for human beings to find their creative voice. My journey has been interesting so far, filled with ups and downs–and yet I am still here more empowered than ever to continue to create. I know what my place is in the world and I am very grateful for that.

Wondercon 2012 was held in the Anaheim convention center on the weekend of March 16-18. As I set up my artist alley table on Friday morning, I found myself among many amazing artists, writers and crafters. As in previous shows I was offering a selection of jewelry pieces and prints of various sizes. Interestingly enough, many of my abstract art jewelry sold more than the characters pieces.

The highlight of the show was on Sunday around 5pm when my Boyfriend Shawn sold my original piece “Heartfelt” a bunny holding a heart while I was away from my table.

I will definitely do Wondercon again!

I will be exhibiting for the very first time at Wondercon this year. This year’s Wondercon will be taking place at the Anaheim convention center. I will be at the Artist Alley table AA-185.

Here are some of my daily sketches as part of the Sketch a Day Challenge

If you are a big art nerd like me than you can appreciate a weekend of artwork, Star Wars music, light saber fights comic book industry panels. I can honestly say Long Beach Comic Con was a lot of fun. The first day, Saturday, I wore my Alice in Wonderland costume. My boyfriend was there being very supportive and helpful. I met a lot of really talented and friendly artists. This was definitely a great place to network and connect with my fan base.

This weekend also really inspired me and gave me a lot of new ideas for future projects. So what’s next? A collab project with my man. It will be a children book filled with short stories and poems based on my illustrations. Shawn will be writing. I will provide the artwork.

Next stop….Wonder Con.
