6. Michael Bay Tells Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fans to ‘Chill’

Transformers director Michael Bay is producing an upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, but he angered fans when he noted changes in the Turtles’ mythology: “These turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable.”

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the Turtles in a black and white comic in 1984 (original concept sketch pictured, via), telling the story of turtles mutated into action heroes by radioactive sewer sludge. Removing these mutant origins, Bay’s new take generated a wave of online criticism.

Bay responded in a forum post on his personal site: “Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.”

7. The Only Ones: Teaser Book Trailer

It’s 144 days until the release of The Only Ones. For those without an abacus on hand, that places the launch date at September 13, 2011 (aka Peter Cetera’s 67th birthday). Movie studios like to whet audiences appetites months in advance of their release date, so I’m thinking I’ll do the same thing. At the end of this post you’ll find a humble, but hopefully enticing, teaser book trailer for The Only Ones.

Those outside of the book business might not run across book trailers during their internet adventures. With honey badger videos to watch and alt.magick bulletin boards to monitor, the average surfer doesn’t have time to dabble in such things. Well, book trailers are thick out there. Some great. Some…different. There’s debate as to whether these things boost book sales or whether they cheapen the esteemed art of the novelist. My take is that as long as you’re not sinking big bucks into the forgettable or misleading, then a book trailer can’t hurt. At worst, no one will watch it and forward it on to their pals. At best, you’ll win a Nobel Prize (let the boy dream big!).

So, without further ado, here’s the teaser trailer for The Only Ones. Keep in mind this is just a preview, a tiny taste. Like when you go to see the new Michael Bay flick and Warner Brothers hooks you with short clip of Rick Moranis, shirtless and sweaty, running through a supermarket with a cocked crossbow and flowing Confederate flag as a cape, a soundtrack of the Georgia Satellites in the background and a booming voiceover proclaiming, “This Christmas, Moranis will rise again. Live and Die in Dixie”

Like that, but better.

9. "Which one of the internets do we hack?" : Writing Fake Works of Art

What if bombastic director Michael Bay wrote the next Batman movie?

Spill.com has a fake script that imagines how Bay would screw up the upcoming installment (The Dark Knight) of the comic book franchise, including this choice quote: "GENERAL: Okay, I like it. But which one of the internets do we hack? [BATMAN]: All of them."

Read it for two reasons. Number one, it's funny. Number two, a little bit of parody can go a long way in your novel. A couple weeks ago, Ed Park told us how he created fake self-help books that gave his satirical novel a new texture.

Check out his interview, and start mapping out your fake works of art today.

"I’ve always loved the vertiginous method of including fictional books within a work of fiction, whether the author provides tantalizing passages or just titles."

10. Sarah Vowell, Violet Superhero

There are at least eight excellent reasons that I think you should take the nine minutes it will take to watch this video of Sarah Vowell, who is the voice for the superhero Violet from The Incredibles.

1. Sarah Vowell is a big introvert.

2. Sarah Vowell is so cool you won't hardly be able to stand it.

3. Sarah Vowell is extremely funny.

4. Sarah Vowell says things like "... I'm better with dead people."

5. Like Nancy Pearl, she has her own Action Figure-- two actually, and one of them is INVISIBLE.

6. Sarah Vowell makes Abraham Lincoln seem kinda, well, you know, hot.

7. As part of my book launch plan I'm starting some school visits and the first one is tomorrow and I'm speaking to two Assemblies with 160 kids each and I'm in dire need of some serious superhero mojo. (And I seem to have misplaced my punctuation she says gasping!)

8. Could there be a better name for a superhero than Violet?

What do you think, friends? Does she make the cut our Shrinking Violet Hall of Fame?

Wish me luck tomorrow--
Mary Hershey
