Elliott Saint James
Releasing January 8th, 2015
A heart warming story about love, loss and second first chances.
Moving to New York City might have been the biggest mistake Emerson Richards ever made, but she’s determined to show everyone – namely, her parents – that it’s the best one too. Emmy isn’t giving up, and if that means she has to bus tables to make ends meet, or deal with rude New Yorkers, then so be it.
Then Emmy lands an office job at one of New York’s top engineering firms. Everything seems to be going according to plan – until she’s forced to work with Ryan West, an architectural genius. And the man she’s been literally running into all over the city. Gorgeous, quiet and arrogant are three words Emmy could use to sum up the mysterious Mr West. DREAMS OF HER OWN
Dreams Come True #3
Releasing November 2015
Soul Mate Publishing, LLC
Can even the unlikeliest of dreams come true?
He sees a spinsterish misfit.
If the Guinness Book of World Records had a category for the worldâs most boring life, Millie Stephens knows she would hold the record. After the plain, strait-laced personal assistant is saved by a total stranger from becoming New York Cityâs latest traffic fatality, she has a disheartening epiphany: her lifeâs highlight reel didnât exist. Determined to step out of the shadows and take a walk on the wild side, she starts Millie-style â by making a list.
She sees a stereotypical thug.
That total stranger, bad boy Ian Brand, is more than the sum of his parts. Beneath that sexy, tattooed exterior is a man with a painful past whoâs desperate to both hide and overcome his disability in the pursuit of his dreams. But his decision to bid on a large construction project could both lead to his downfall and reveal his secret.
Will Millie and Ian look beneath the surface and see thereâs more to each other than meets the eye?
If the Guinness Book of World Records had a category for the world’s most boring life, Millie Stephens knew she would hold the record.
Bundled up in her brown wool coat against the chill of a New York fall, she hurried down the Brooklyn sidewalk to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for her boss.
As personal assistant for best-selling romance author, Darcy Butler-Ryan, Millie kept her calendar, edited her manuscripts, handled her social media, and through her agent, Gloria Madison, scheduled her public appearances, among other duties. Since Darcy had become pregnant, Millie had also taken it upon herself to run errands and generally oversee Darcy’s health and well-being.
Thus, the trip to the pharmacy for Darcyâs anti-nausea medication.
She consulted the day’s to-do list to see what other errands were on it. Lists were her life. They provided organization, structure, and a sense of accomplishment. She loved ticking things off her list so much that if she accomplished something that wasn’t on the list, she’d write it down just so she could have the pleasure of marking it off.
She had a list for everything. Errands. Tasks. Books to be read. Special dates to remember. If something needed doing, she had a list for it, all appropriately categorized, of course. Shoving her errand list into her coat pocket, she stopped at the corner and waited for the walk signal. As soon as the light changed, she stepped out into the pedestrian crosswalk, anxious to get to the pharmacy and out of the cold. She glanced to her left and froze, as a delivery truck barreled down the street as if the red light meant nothing. And as if she truly were invisible.
Fear stole her ability to move and she scrunched her eyes closed hoping death would at least be quick. She strived for invisibility, but now sheâd give anything to stand out.
Next thing she knew she was yanked from behind and hauled up against a hard object, bands of steel around her waist, her feet dangling in the air.
âAre you okay?â a gruff male voice asked, his breath warm in her ear.
She nodded, unsure if she could do any more than that.
âIâm going to set you back on your feet. Do you think you can stand?â
Nodding again, she realized the hard object at her back was a manâs chest, and the steel bands were his arms. She slid down his body and felt the sidewalk beneath her feet. A wave of dizziness washed over her.
âBreathe,â her rescuer encouraged. He turned her to face him, his hands on her shoulders, and she looked up and into eyes the color of a winter-gray sky, earnest with concern. His already tousled sandy blond hair ruffled in the wind whipping around the corner, and his chin bore the stubble so many women were fond of.
She inhaled deeply, drawing in the scent of something spicy and leathery. âBetter?â
She nodded, still speechless.
âYou should always wait after the signal changes before you cross a street. Iâve got an appointment. Youâre sure youâre okay?â
âBe more careful next time,â the stranger in the leather jacket said before he turned to walk away.
Millie managed to put one foot in front of the other for another block before coming to a bus stop and collapsing onto the bench. Her legs shook, her hands quivered, and she struggled to take in a deep breath. All she could think about was how your life was supposed to flash before your eyes when confronted with a near-death experience, and hers . . . didnât. Instead it was like a film projector that had run out of film â just a blank screen.
What did that mean?
It meant, Millicent Grace Stephens, that your life has been so boring that the highlight reel was nonexistent. Her thirtieth birthday was right around the corner, and what had she accomplished with her life?
Not much, that’s what.
Sure, she had a bachelor’s in literature, summa cum laude, with a focus on the Middle Ages from Sarah Lawrence College. She had a job she loved. And she could support herself. Other than that, she might as well have become a nun for all the excitement her life held.
She recalled the hard strength of her rescuerâs chest against her back. The rough and tumble look of him. Sheâd bet her first edition autographed copy of Edith Whartonâs Age of Innocence, that his life wasnât boring. That if he had a near-death experience heâd have a highlight reel worthy of an action movie.
Rising on still-wobbly legs, she drew in a long, slow breath, and resumed her errand in an I-almost-died daze.

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult and Contemporary Adult romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn’t mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c’mon, who doesn’t love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about future books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound mighty fine.

I have always been a bit fussy when it comes to books. It goes without saying that I have to love the concept and in a lot of cases I'm swayed by recommendations. But what can often make me decide to pick up a book in the first place is the cover. If it is striking, if it grabs my attention - I very often want it, or at least want to know more about it.
So it goes without saying that I was delighted when Scholastic sent me the design for Seven Days. I immediately loved its bright, bold statement and the fact that words, spiteful words from my text, were plastered across it. It represents bullying so well for me. It's a big, bold statement. I was confident that this cover could have impact.I guess I'd worried a lot about the cover. I really wanted to love it, so it was such a relief to see it. I just wanted to hug the designer behind it (in fact I did at the Scholastic party...!)
It got me thinking just how important cover design can be, and how authors could be blessed or cursed with a cover that they do not like, or do not feel reflects their story.
With this in mind, I spoke to a few authors about their favourite covers and asked what it was about them that made them stand out.
What were their cover stories?
Helen Grant - Urban Legends (Random House)
" I was very pleased this cover because it shows a female (dead?) body but in such a way that it appears almost abstract; you can only see one eye and the line of the face runs diagonally across the cover. I thought that was quite stylish."
Keren David selected Salvage (Atom Books)
" I love both the published versions of Salvage. They are very different, but still have lots of impact."
Hilary Freeman selected The Camden Town Tales (Piccadilly Press)
"I love all my Camden Town Tales covers. I think that they appeal to the readership because they are pretty and perfectly targeted."
Emma Haughton selected Now You See Me (Usbourne)
'I love this cover because it's so simple, and yet so striking, And that gorgeous zingy green!'
Sheena Wilkinson selected Still Falling (Little Island)
"What I loved was the feel of the cover. I couldn't in a million years have said what I wanted but when I saw what the designer had done I just thought, yeah, that's it. I wanted the book to have a sexy grown up feel which I think it does. My last books all featured horses and I really wanted this one to feel like a departure which it does. "
Caroline Green selected Hold Your Breath (Piccadilly Press)
"I loved the metallic look that gave it an underwater feel. And the colours are gorgeous."
It's fascinating looking at different front covers and wondering what the author felt about each one. I guess when an area such as design is taken out of their hands, it's even more important that it works, that they connect to it.
What front covers do you especially like? Have you ever picked up a book initially because of the design?
I know I have...

A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk on the traditional vs. self-published experience for writers. I discussed covers, but had to stick to those with new art created by artists, since I had no experience with photo covers. If only I'd been quicker about reading the May/June 2014 SCBWI Bulletin, I would have had some good info I could have included.
In that issue, author Chris Eboch had a great article called Photo Cover Design for Self-Published Novels. She uses a case study of an author who found the main photo for her cover herself and still needed a photo artist and a designer (that's two different people, folks) to finish her cover. I mention this to make sure everyone understands how involved creating a cover is.
Finding this article will be worth the effort for anyone thinking about creating their own book cover.
I’m super excited to reveal what Razorhurst will look like when Soho Teen publish it in the USA next March. Quite a contrast to the Australian cover, eh? Yet at the same time they both have that gorgeous, strong font treatment.
I adore that font and those colours. I hope you do too. Everyone who’s seen this cover has been wildly enthusiastic uttering comments like, “I would buy that in a heartbeat.” “Utterly beautiful.” “Wow, that’s so commercial.” All of it music to my ears.
Soho’s edition will have a bonus glossary. Yes, you US readers are going to be spoiled. It also means the USA Razorhurst will be my first novel to have both a glossary and a map. That’s right, Soho are keeping the beautiful map used in the Allen and Unwin edition. Still gorgeous, isn’t it?
Map designed by Hannah Janzen
Map plus glossary? What could be cooler? Nothing. I can’t wait until all my US readers can get their hands on Razorhurst. March is so soon, youse guys!

I have a couple cover reveals this morning. First up: I read about The Elementalists last week, and the plot sounds intriguing. Besides, anything with dragons gets a second look from me. What do you think of the cover?
It is the hottest year on record for the fifth year in a row, and famine riots spread across much of Africa. Along the Gulf Coast, the hurricane season is one of the worst in memory. The latest in a string of 9.0 strength earthquakes has claimed two-hundred thousand lives in central China. Far below the earthâs crust, imprisoned in ancient slumber, the elemental powers of the land grow restlessâŠ
All seems normal in small town Virginia, where fifteen year old Chloe McClellan dreads the start of her sophomore year. Whip-smart, athletic and genuine, sheâs also a bit of an angry loner who is totally unaware of her charms. Despite her plans to stay under the radar, Chloe becomes a target for the fiery queen of the It-girls in fifth period gym. She then draws instant notoriety when sheâs struck by lightning after her first disastrous day of school. As if that werenât bad enough, she soon comes to believe, that either sheâs going insane, or her accident has unleashed a powerful and terrifying creature from the mythological worldâtriggering the final countdown to the worldâs sixth great extinction level event.
Chloe finds some solace as she inexplicably wins the affections of an unlikely trio of male classmates: the earthy and gregarious captain of the football team, the flighty stoner with a secret, and an enigmatic transfer student who longs for the sea. All the while she struggles with the growing realization that âDragonsâ exist, and she may be the only one who can stop them.
The Elementalists, book one of the Tipping Point Prophecy, follows Chloe and her group of friends, and enemies, as they struggle to save humanity by harnessing the power of the elements.
This is C. Sharpâs debut novel. He studied English Literature and Anthropology at Brown University and Mayan Archaeology at the Harvard Field School in Honduras. He works in film and commercial production. Chris now lives in Concord, MA with his wife and daughter.

Oh, gang. What a fun panel.
Moderated by legend-in-his-own-time Mark Evanier, âCover Story: The Art of the Coverâ took five artists, gave them five of their own covers apiece, and had them talk about them. The covers had been chosen ahead of time, without the artistsâ knowledge, and Mark hoped at least one of the choices would be a cover the artist didnât like.
âEven if we take some potshots at your covers — itâs coming from a place of affection. Even Rembrandt had a worst painting.â
The Cover Story panel: Evanier, Conner, Staples, Brooks, Lee, Sakai.
Weâd be here foreverlong if we went cover-by-cover, so letâs just hit some highlights.
âJack Kirby hated doing covers,â Mark explained. âHe never knew when to do them. Before the comic, he didnât know what the most exciting scene would be. During the comic, he didnât want to interrupt his flow. When he was done, he wasnât emotionally invested in that issue anymore.â

âYâknow — geez, lookit her boobs! I wanted to pull a moment of time out to focus on the cover, a moment that happens in between panels. So you donât see this in the book, but it still moves the story along. Paul Mounts colored it — I put the stars in the background, but he did the burst. If I trust him and leave the background blank, he goes in and does a nice design.â
This cover gave Mark the opportunity to tell a Wally Wood/Power Girl anecdote, with Amandaâs encouragement: âWally said, âIâm going to make her boobs larger every issue until somebody stops me. I think they just took him off the book instead.â
Zatanna #12. DC Comics. Art by Amanda Conner.
âOkay, I donât always do big boobs, guys. This is another example of moments in time you donât see often. Zatanna lives in San Francisco now, and I wondered, what does she do every morning, before she goes to fight things that want to destroy the universe? Probably the same things I do: get a cup of coffee, and a muffin, and read her iPad. Except, on the Golden Gate Bridge. My favorite thing is showing well-known superheroes doing an everyday thing that you and I do.â
âLast night were the Eisner Awards, aka the Fiona Staples Show,â said Mark, by way of introduction. âThe best thing about the Eisners is that whoop from the audience when they agree, yeah, thatâs the one that deserves it.â
Done to Death #1. Markosia Publishing. Art by Fiona Staples.
âThis was my first issue of my first comic. It was an oil painting, before I did everything digitally. They cropped it, but — that would have been my call. Itâs an awkward place to cut off the image, at a joint, at the neck.â
Saga #18. Image Comics. Art by Fiona Staples.
âFor Saga, the cover is part of the entire package. We donât give away much story on our Saga covers. I usually do the cover before he scripts it — Brian told me, put Lying Cat on this one and make it dark. I had a feeling something bad was going to happen, so I gave Lying Cat a bloody mouth, like sheâd taken a bite out of one of our heroes.”
âFor the last few years, Iâve been pretty exclusively a cover artist. Itâs not really storytelling — Iâm trying to sell the book. The cover has to be done the month before Previews hits — if weâre lucky, we have a short paragraph of what happens on the inside. The beauty of designing a character as a cover artist — I donât have to worry about the interior artist who has to draw every angle of that character for 22 pages.â
Amazing Fantasy #1. Marvel Comics. Art by Mark Brooks.
âMy first for Marvel, ten years ago. It was introducing a new Spider-Girl. I really stunk at foreshortening, so her leg looks really weird. Joe Quesada designed the character, but I put in the pouches around her wrist — I still donât know what purpose they would serve.â (An audience member shouts out — chaptstick!)
Cable/Deadpool #14. Marvel Comics. Art by Mark Brooks.
âOne of the few times Cable got one up on Deadpool. But to keep them in frame, I had to have him hold the gun by the trigger and almost let it fall down, over Deadpoolâs head. To this day, I think it looks very weird.â
Mark Evanier chimed in that, in earlier days, Marvel would have rejected this one because the figures obscured the title.
âThatâs different now,â Brooks said. âI can pretty much cover up the entire title, as long as itâs with the main character of the book.â
Deadpool #30. Marvel Comics. Art by Mark Brooks.
âIn the original solicit, Deadpool was dressed like Jimi Hendrix. Marvel found out Hendrixâs estate is very litigious. I had to go in and take out the striped shirt, take off the wig, and flip it so he wasnât playing left-handed.â
âI always think I enjoy covers, but I always regret doing them. Iâm not a fan of showing these out of sequence, because Iâm afraid the same re-used images are going to crop up. I wonât have a lot to say about these because they were all done in a mad rush to get into the solicitations.â
Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #3. DC Comics. Art by Jae Lee.
âThis was done for solicitation. It was an Ozymandias book, but the cover features the Comedian. Where this fight was happening, they were surrounded by falling action figures. I hadnât finished it, so I cropped it and said, is this good enough for now? I said I would come back and finish it later. But I never finished it.â
Batman/Superman #8. DC Comics. Art by Jae Lee.
âThis was tough. Itâs my second time drawing a car. Iâve been doing this 22 years and managed never to draw a car. I donât know how to draw cars, so it has to be mangled. I donât know how artists draw those things. The tires — I donât know how you guys do it.â
âAlso, Power Girl was much bigger than Superman, so we had to reduce her digitally. But then her head looked too big, so we had to reduce he head separately. It became a kind of Frankenstein project. I have a hard time looking at it.â
Amanda chimed in by saying she has no problem with cars, but hates drawing mangled wreckage.
âOh, we should trade off,â Jae said.
âI hate doing covers. I hate it with a passion. I have been doing covers with the same character for the past 30 years, so itâs difficult to think of a different situation for that character. The covers are done months ahead of time, and my writer, who is me, often has no idea what is going to happen in the interiors.â
Usagi Yojimbo #46. Dark Horse Comics. Art by Stan Sakai.
âThis was a commission — a guy commissioned me to do a kite festival. So it was four connected pages. We used it for two consecutive covers. The colorist is Tom Bluth, who is my colorist of choice. In Tomâs case, itâs always — do what you want, Tom. I give him very little direction. Iâm surprised sometimes by his choices, but itâs always better than I would color things.â
Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters #1. Eclipse. Art by Stan Sakai.
âStrictly a job for the money.â
âThatâs funny,” Evanier added, “I worked for Eclipse — I donât remember there being any money.â
Usagi Yojimbo #101. Dark Horse Comics. Art by Stan Sakai.
âIn Usagi, thereâs always a little skull when somebody dies, and a guy always writes in saying how many skulls I had in that issue. So for this cover I drew as many skulls as I could. But then the guy didnât write in, and I was disappointed. There was no logo, but Usagi is iconic now — when people see Usagi, they know itâs a Usagi cover.â
Donald Duck Adventures #32. Walt Disney Publications. Art by Stan Sakai.
âAw, I hate working for Disney. They kept saying âdo it on model,â but they didnât give me any models! I must have drawn this duckâs head 7 times. The problem was, I was following the European design, which I prefer, and itâs a little different there.â
Evanier closed the panel by thanking everyone for participating, and saying he hoped panels like these remind folks that thereâs always a story and a person behind the design choices of covers.
âThese panels remind people — someone actually designed that. It gives people an appreciation for the art of the cover.â
I have a cover redesign to share for Honor Reclaimed by Tonya Burrows, as well as a giveaway for you to enter.
First, here is the synopsis:
Former Marine scout sniper Seth Harlan is new to HORNET and anxious to prove he can still do his job despite an ongoing battle with PTSD. He remembers all too well what it’s like to sit inside an enemy camp, praying for rescue and waiting for death. So when a black ops soldier contacts HORNET to rescue a buddy who was left behind, all sorts of nasty memories strain his newfound stability.
When an interview with a runaway Afghan child bride leads photojournalist Phoebe Leighton to an arms deal involving a suitcase bomb powerful enough to wipe out a mid-sized town, she realizes this is one battle she can’t win on her own. Forming an unlikely alliance with a ragtag team of military and government delinquents, she meets Seth, a sniper carrying as many emotional scars as physical, who impresses her with his steely will and ignites passions within her she thought long dead.
Suddenly this mission is about a lot more than an abandoned soldier. Racing against the clock, Seth, Phoebe, and the rest of HORNET struggle to stop that bomb before it reaches it’s final destination: The United States.

Author Bio: Writing has always been my one true love. I wrote my first novel-length story in 8th grade and haven’t put down my pen since. I received a B.A. in creative writing from SUNY Oswego and I’m now working on a MFA in popular fiction at Seton Hill University.
When I’m not writing, I spend my time reading, painting (badly), exploring new places, and enjoying time with my family. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let’s be honest, I’ll take a bad horror movie too!) I’m a geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.
I share my life with two dogs and a ginormous cat. I’m from a small town in Western New York, but I suffer from a bad case of wanderlust and usually end up moving someplace new every few years. Luckily, my animals are all excellent travel buddies.

ABOUT FAKE IT:
As her sizzling new series continues, Jennifer Chance sparks some serious combustion between a sexy biker and a corporate go-getter whoâs ready to let her hair down.
New grad Anna Richardson works hardâso hard that sheâs given up having a romantic life. Anna has even convinced her friends that sheâs dating an amazing guyâwho theyâve simply never met. But now Anna has a wedding to attend and needs to produce the hottie sheâs been lying about for the past six months. Enter Jake Flynn, her infuriating, motorcycle-riding, jaw-droppingly gorgeous neighbor, whoâs more than willing to fake it for a weekend. In fact, Jake wonât be satisfied until things get real.
Though Jake is only playing the role of adoring boyfriend, heâs starting to feel the heat, and judging by Annaâs sweet blush, so is she. Letting chemistry this intense go to waste would be a real shame. Soon, though, the thin line between fantasy and reality fades. Jake may not be what every buttoned-up fast-tracker wants, but heâs sure as hell what Anna needs. And if she takes a ride with him, their adventure never has to end.
âJake, the wedding would completely suck for you,â Anna protested. âMy ex is a nightmare and you would hate all of my friends. You would think the whole thing is ridiculousâbecause it is.â He just watched her, maddeningly, his smile curving as she tried to sputter out her refusals. âYou donât want to do this. Trust me.â
âI just said I did.â
âBut . . . you canât . . . you wouldnât . . .â Anna stopped, flustered. What was happening here? Was she actually turning down a viable date? âThereâs so much you would have to memorize about Dave. Thereâs no way youâre going to want to do that.â
Jake just lifted his brows. âYou know, for someone whoâs just met me, you seem to know a lot about what I would and wouldnât want to do.â
âI donât! I mean, I can guess. But I just . . . canât.â Anna swallowed. âLook, I appreciate it. If I strike out tonight, Iâll call you. How about that?â
âThat sounds good.â Jake signaled to the bartender. âSo I guess I should make sure you have my number, then.â
âOh, well yes. I guess. Or, you know, I could justââ Before Anna could complete the sentence, Jake had a pen in his fingers. They were both leaning on the bar, their faces inches apart. He tipped the pen to its side, sliding its base alongside her jaw. The cool metal on her flushed skin startled her, and Annaâs gaze jumped to his. The challenge in his eyes was unmistakable.
âHold out your hand, Anna,â he said, as if they werenât in the middle of a crowded bar, in front of everyone.
âThatâs not necessary,â she said quickly. âI have other peopleâs cardsâyou can just useâjust write on one of those.â
His gaze grew hotter, more intense. âThatâs no good,â he said. âYou might lose it.â
Anna hesitated, then something was triggered deep inside her, and she felt a dangerous flicker of pleasure. She knew that flicker, remembered it from somewhere, even as life and work and responsibility had taught her to keep it doused, out of commission. It had been a long time since sheâd let that fire burn.
But now Jake Flynn was positioned in front of her with gasoline and a blowtorch.
Someone cleared his throat beside them, and a disgruntled voice rang out. âExcuse me, Iâm Gary, and your friend Laceyââ
âTake off, Gary,â Jake said without turning around. His gaze held hers. âAnna?â
Anna held out her hand, and Jake held her arm steady, cradling it with his fingers. Sensation rocketed through her at the intimate touch, intensifying sharply as she felt the smooth slide of ink on her skin. He wrote slowly, sensually, the pen tracing wickedly silken lines on the hypersensitive skin on the inside of her wrist, all the way down until he reached her palm. By the time he was finished, Anna was amazed she was still conscious. Then he glanced at her.
âThink itâs dry? Or should I blow on it?â

Today I have a cover reveal for The Night is Found, the final book in Kat Krugerâs Magdeburg Trilogy! The book hits stores July 22nd. What do you think?
When they tried to kill a prince, they made a king
In the aftermath of his pack leaderâs assassination Connor Lewis is ready to take control. Rodolfus de Aquilaâs plan before he died was to unite the European werewolf packs against their common enemies: the Hounds of God who make the laws and enforce them ruthlessly and with questionable motives, and the Luparii, an intergovernmental group of werewolf hunters now bent on the extermination of his kind. The uneasy alliance between these two factions has fallen apart, and now a battle wages leaving the pack werewolves scrambling to escape bio-chemical warfare on one side, and total domination on the other.
After hearing rumors of a union between the American packs Connor returns with Amara to his home city of New York to learn how to bring the Old World packs together. Werewolf society in the New World has taken a very different course from that of Europe, but when Connor meets the American leaders he begins to question if their ways are, in fact, the path forward.
A world away from Madison, Arden, and all those that he is trying to protect, Connor must discover the secret to uniting and leading the packs under one final charge, or else risk extinction for their entire species in the epic conclusion to The Magdeburg Trilogy.
