51. a garnet haired mermaid named claret....

january's mermaid.

i haven't been blogging (or painting much for that matter) as i am waiting to have a cervical spine fusion in the next week. don't ask...

anyhoo, i'm trying to take it easy (which is next to impossible for me) and paint a little bit at a time, as i have pain that shoots all the way down my painting arm. needless to say the last few weeks have been pretty challenging.

i've had this beauty drawn up for a bit now and have slowly been working on her. hoping to have her done before the surgery and posted FOR SALE.

after that, i'll be taking it a bit slower than usual for a while as i will be constrained to a neck brace for a few weeks. so during that time, even if i can't work at the easel, i will hopefully be able to draw and sketch from my couch.

then i'll be back better and stronger than ever 'cause my drive definitely outweighs my small size!;)

52. little olivine...

featured in this lovely mermaid treasury found here:

i love how humbling it is to be recognized by other artists and i love the opportunity etsy provides by allowing artists of all types to share their gift with the world.

as for little olivine here, i am so emotionally attached to this little mermaid. i mean art for me is always an emotional attachment. i sometimes wonder if you have to be another one of *us* to really understand that. that feeling of if you can't paint/draw/create, that you can't survive. that is how i feel every single day of my life and i live and breathe to do it and i do it to live and breathe. without it there is nothing. not for me anyway. no amount of money or anything/anyone could take it's place. it's not only a part of me...it is ALL of me.

with that being said, when little olivine sells, i will shed some tears for sure. bittersweet ones, knowing that she will be making some little girl very happy. besides, she can't live in my studio forever...and she's always in my heart because that's where she came from to begin with :)

such a sap, i know...

speaking of mermaids, i'm still working on the whole series, just having some neck and arm pain right now so trying to take it easy a bit. which is something that does not come easy for me.

56. ~HaPpY MaRcH~

well, the first day of March has officially arrived, which means spring is not too far off. happy for most people right? not so much for me, as winter is my favorite season and we seem to have gotten shafted of yet another really snowy winter (which makes the arrival of spring even harder for me to digest) :(

anyhoo...my beautiful aquamarine hued mermaid, Beryl, has been featured in a treasury over at etsy welcoming in the new month. take a peek at some of the other interesting pieces she has featured in shades of the calming and peacefully beautiful aquamarine.

below are some crops of March themed illustrations and their links, where you can purchase prints of them.
oh, and Easter is early this year (March 24th) so i believe there may be a CUTE little bunny FOR SALE in my shop as well, an ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING. check him out, if you will....:)

november's mermaid!

i have been working on her for the last couple of days and tomorrow i will be listing the finished painting, FOR SALE.

she is painted in bright, cheery shades of yellows and oranges, a good thing because this week's gray and cloudy days leave a lot to be desired for.

60. meet little beryl...

and her little fish friend, pisces, of course ;)

she is the fist in a series of mermaids based on birthstones for every month of the year. i chose my favorite gemstone first, the aquamarine. funny, considering i am the biggest PINK fanatic there is. however, i have always been completely entranced by the beauty and serenity of the aquamarine. just a breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL stone!

ok...back to little beryl here...;)

the ORIGINAL painting is for sale here:
and PRINTS ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. message me through the link above and i can surely accommodate you.

can't wait to do more of these little beauties....

63. The lighter side of art…

As many of people know, while I do draw cute things, they tend to have a darker side.  I have been lately working on some art that is more on the cute side without the twists and darkness.  That is not to mean I am giving up my dark, whimsical view of fairy tales, but diversifying my art.

The Sweet Little Mermaid

So I would like to introduce my new line of art known as Little Fairytale Art, a new line of prints and jewelry brought to you by Diana Levin Art.  I have decided to run this line as a separate etsy store, starting with three pieces that will gradually expand over time.  This store will run in conjunction with my regular etsy store, allowing me to show the two sides of my art, growing each store individually while having some crossover.  As the lines progress, they may merge into one store or each may grow into further different directions becoming even more unique collections.

64. Finding the Colors

I have stumbled upon something this week which has made me wonder "Why haven't I done this before?!"

Pantone comes out with colors for the Spring and Fall every year in February (I think). This includes the color of the year and the colors most companies and fashion designers will use to advertise and create.

With my goal to sell my work to manufacturing companies and to license it out, it would only make sense that I too use these colors! Certainly an "Ah ha!" moment.

Fall colors on the left, Spring on the right

Researching and finding Pantone's color groups. I find this amazing and was totally worth the work. Why? Because now I have something to follow instead of thinking "Which would be the best combination of colors to use?" Brilliant!
Resource: http://www.setufairtrade.com

Drew up this image on Sunday (?) thinking of Mother's Day and a request I received a while back. Placing the Pantone color schemes to work. Truly loved how my thoughts and problem solving was directed to other things, like painting skin, instead of what the colors where going to be.

Took it a step further and created the 10 Pantone colors for Spring/Summer and the 10 Pantone colors for Fall/Winter in watercolor. I googled this and didn't find anyone trying to re-create these colors.

Word of warning tho if you're going to copy these: probably not the most conventional way of doing it. Each set isn't made with one red, blue, and yellow like most palettes would. I just used what I had in my huge circle palette that would give me the color I was going for.

Find the list of colors used HERE.

65. Life's Sketches

Not only am I working in the Little Red Book (about once a week), but I've also found complete solace in creating these more refined sketches. Beyond anything my true love lies in drawing.

I'm trying to create work that reflects me, even if it's commissioned work or something for licensing. If I'm not connected to it somehow it lacks heart and thus very little connection with others. In watching my sales on Etsy, the pieces that sell the most are the ones my heart truly connected with.

"Waiting"
This piece was first an exercise to draw from observation, but after I drew her eye I connected with her and the emotion she's feeling. I really began to pour out my desires into her as I drew, thinking about everything I'm learning patience for.

The box was added at the very end problem solving how to express to others what she was feeling. I personally am patiently waiting for the next big chapter in my life...a larger family. "As I wait you make me stronger." I look forward to this painting being a more explorative piece in the watercolor stage.

"Life Song"
I wanted to draw another piece similar to "Cardinal Song" but bigger, so the other day I just began sketching with "Cardinal Song" by my side.

Well, like "Waiting" my thoughts began to roam. I have been very focused on seeing my husband, Brian, and the health of our marriage. He really is the center of my world right next to God, and I have used him for reference but never a piece th

66. Special Valentine Giveaway

I would like to start a new tradition around here, and I want it to be something special given at least once a year.
I want to give away a painting, and I think Valentine's Day is the perfect time.

Title: "Love Floats"
Image Size: approx. 6.5 x 11 inches
Paper Size: 9x12

I created this piece just for the giveaway, and it's particularly special because of how I went about the process. In my previous post I mentioned I was going to take a watercolor class and I found many awesome videos/tutorials on youtube.

I applied much of what I learned, and something clicked last night as I completed "Love Floats". I am VERY excited to see the new discovery in my later work. (discovery will be revealed in next blog post)

Why the original giveaway? I truly believe my artwork goes to those it was intended for, and I know in these times it can be difficult to obtain something extra that isn't a necessity.

So, is this intended for you?
Here's how you can find out...

Mandatory Entry: Post below about one of the biggest blessings you've ever received. What truly touched you and made you stand up straight knowing you were/are loved?

Additional ways to enter (get your name in multiple times):

1 entry - Share the giveaway on Facebook and Twitter and mention below
2 entries - Visit my shop and share your favorite art print below

Please be sure to post all comments here so that nothing gets lost. If it's not below it won't count.
I will use Random.org to determine a winner.

There's More?!
Yuppers! There will be a second and third place winner too!

Second Place Prize: *Two (2) 8x10 prints of your choice from my shop and one (1) Print of "Love Floats"

69. Things for November

I finished a scarflette.  Don’t you love the color?

If you follow along on Facebook you probably know that I got a treadle sewing machine.  Singer model 115, 1921.  Bought it from the original owner (I even have the old, hand-written receipt).   Wonderful condition.  I scrubbed down the parlor cabinet which is why I took the head (machine) out and left it on the built-in in the breakfast nook.  Looks nice there though.  Check out the mermaid details.  Now I just need to learn how to use it.

I’m onto making a cardigan.   My carpal tunnel and tendonitis issues have not really gotten in the way of my knitting, even though I’ve been working up a storm (on the computer).  I’m not going to question it, just accept it and be grateful.  I mean, look how far along I am!  I’m changing up the pattern a bit: 2×2 rib instead of cables, half or 3/4 sleeves instead of short, and adding a mustard-gold stripe or two running through the cuffs and waist ribbing.  I’m looking forward to making the button band as I’ve never made one before.   The main color is “Squirrel Heather,” isn’t that cute?  Both are Knit Picks Swish DK.

70. trying something a bit new...

meet maribel the mermaid:)
i have a bit of "free" time in between christmas gifts and custom orders so i wanted to try something a bit different. i am going to do a series (i hope) of 11x14 gallery wrapped canvases to be sold as ORIGINALS in my etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/enchantedeasel.
i thought it would be cute to kind of do a compilation of sorts on a theme for a child's room. yes, i will be doing boys too;) maybe a cute little astronaut/outer space theme or dinosaurs....
but my first one in this series will be called mermaid life with my sweet little maribel. this will look great in a little girl's room with ocean animals/beach theme. or maybe even in a bathroom. lots of bright, tropical colors are planned for this cutie:)
stay tuned....

72. Befuddled Burnout (and Mermaid Inspiration)

I’m looking at my to-do pile/rack of sewing projects, my art supplies and other crafty things and I’m feeling rather…MEH about it all right now.   The desire is there but not the will to do any of it.  Eep!  Usually this feeling doesn’t hit me until mid to late summer.  I like to call this feeling “Befuddled Burnout.”  When there’s just so much on your plate and you canNOT even begin to pick at your mashed potatoes.  My husband reminds me that I don’t have to be Superwoman but it’s so hard to not feel like I must, you know?

On the bright side, I’m been working out almost every day (mostly yoga), finally getting enough sleep, and have read through book 6 of the Enola Holmes series.  (So, SO good!)  And just because I haven’t had the inclination to do much besides the aforementioned activities in addition to work, that doesn’t mean I don’t continue to find (and look for) inspiration in other people’s work.

So instead of forcing myself to do some of the things I think I “need” to do (like constructing a certain ’60s dress that has been driving me a bit crazy) I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the break!

73. Review of The Mermaid’s Mirror, by L. K. Madigan

Released: October 4, 2010
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children (320 pages)

Fifteen-year old Lena loves the sea. More than anything, she wants to learn to surf, but her dad, who hasn’t gone into the water for many years, prohibits it. Lena doesn’t know exactly why, except for the fact that he had a mysterious accident and almost drowned when she was a little girl. As Lena’s sixteenth birthday approaches, she decides to learn to surf behind her father’s back, and takes lessons from a friend. Soon, everybody is astounded by Lena’s skill and grace in the water. Her dexterity on the board is almost bizarre. This makes her consider surfing on Magic Crescent Cove, home of the most wild, dangerous waves.

One day, Lena sees a head popping out of the water. At first, she thinks it’s a seal, but soon Lena realizes that what she has seen isn’t human. Around the same time, Lena begins to feel an urge to find something, to search for something, though she doesn’t know for what. Then, on her birthday, she decides to surf on Magic Crescent Cove. Needless to say, she almost drowns, but something—or something—brings her to the surface and puts a key in her hand

What does the key open? Do mermaids exist or is Lena losing her mind? Why won’t her father and stepmother tell her what is going on? Lena knows they’re hiding something from her.

The Mermaid’s Mirror is a marvelous novel that combines mystery, fantasy and a touch of romance. It is also an adventure and, in a way, a coming-of-age story about a young teenager who belongs to two worlds and must ultimately choose between both.

It is refreshing to read books where teenagers don’t sulk or curse and children and parents love each other and treat one another with respect. The dynamics between Lena and her family are a delight to behold, and the author did a wonderful job in creating an imaginative yet utterly believable underwater fantasy world. The description of the mer-people and their way of life will transport the reader out of reality.

The Mermaid’s Mirror is at times a bit slow in the beginning, but later quickly picks up pace and the second half of the book is quite suspenseful. Lena is a lovely protagonist, just like the girl next door, yet possessing a very special secret.

This young adult novel is highly recommended for young readers and adults alike.

74. Fairy Finds

Along with the fairy paintings currently on display at Sovereign House are other fairy finds. There are the fairy purses of course, and now another one of Avril's crochet inventions, a little blue-finned mermaid with cascading golden hair. Like the fairy purses she is made of the finest, silkiest cotton thread, very beguiling to the touch. She fits charmingly into the palm of one's hand.

Some weeks ago I found a pair of child-sized chairs in my favourite charity shop and brought them home to sand down and repaint with a fairy motif. The weeks have slipped by with so many things to have ready in time for the show, but this weekend I finally finished the chairs and brought them into the gallery.

Here is the signature motif under the seat,

and here are the chairs, with daisy seats and winged back rests.
One of our young visitors pulled up a chair to sit and paint with me for a while. Working on scraps of watercolour paper we came up with these (fairy with a flower vine, fairy flying over a golden ship) and other miniatures, making up stories to go with each one.

On a table in the middle of the room are books, cards and ornaments.
