3. Comic Book Tools And Materials Part Two: The Disappointing Truth About Paper

There are 2 things I need from a paper I'm doing pen and ink drawings on : it needs to be smooth and at least 2 ply. And I really like cheap.

If it's not smooth the sharp pen tips will catch and skip across the paper. I've used rougher papers for pen by drawing gently and slowly and I've managed just fine. However I don't want to do a whole book that way. I think it's best to use the material most well suited to a given project within your budget. The Situation, unlike Maddy Kettle, was drawn on higher quality watercolour paper. I did this for a few reasons. The big one is I just wasn't sure what materials were best yet and second, I had made the decision to hand colour The Situation so it needed to be a paper that could handle ink as well as watercolour and gouache without warping and going all pulpy.

And the paper should be 2 ply or greater because I'm really rough on my paper. I apply layers and layers of black and white ink (and often other materials) and sometimes need to scratch the paper with an exacto knife to get the right effect. A single ply paper will tear quickly under this punishment. So for me the quality of a paper is indicated by it's surface and thickness.

I tend to use a bristol paper or something similar. There are a number of brands like this. Strathmore is the most famous and it is also very reliable.  This is what I'm using for Maddy Kettle. I'll switch if I can get the same quality for less money.

There are papers that might actually be better suited to this kind if pen and ink work such as Arches or Fabriano hot pressed watercolor papers. However, these papers are high quality papers made from cotton rag rather than wood pulp and are much costlier.

So, the truth is, the paper just needs to be OK and fairly cheap.

5. A Feast Of Slug

Here is an unused page from the Jeff Vandermeer comic The Situation. Unused because I was stupidly referring to an older version of Jeff's script when I did it. A testament to my sloppy mind. A shame too because I really like this page. I just sent al the completed artwork off and am turning to a jelly comprised entirely of anxiety.

6. Painting The Days

Here's the finished, colored version of the inked panel I posted earlier. I'm working at a pretty fast rate and will have this book done soon. As I said before, I won't colour a book in such a work intensive manner again, this is taking forever. I may have to change my mind if there's a sequel though. So, while I finish this I'm waiting to hear back on the final round of edits for Maddy Kettle, which is already underway but some stuff needed work in the thumbnails ans outline. Also waiting for our first big storm, which is on its way, apparently.

7. Monster Monday

Working on a monster for the webcomic, not quite there yet, too...um...cute, I think. Oh well. Lots of time for this later. Currently finishing up colours on the Situation webcomic. Please remind me not to hand colour comics with watercolour and gouache next time. It looks good but is taking too long. Now I know...

8. Scarskirt, Almost There

Here's part of an inked panel from the upcoming webcomic The Situation, written by Jeff Vandermeer and drawn by me. I' almost done all the initial art and can't believe it. I think it'll be a great comic and I hope it gets collected some day in book form. And boy, did I ever learn a lot while doing this book.

10. Too much Rail Time

In order to pay for the new Mac I had to work extra hours at the art store. This means lots and lots of travel time. I live an hour away from the store by street car. And this means that I've sketching a lot on my iPod with the Brushes app. So I have a small collection of doodles to post. I still love this app, so great for sketching. Now that it has layers it is even deeper and a compulsive way to draw.

In the NEWS I emailed all my editors before work yesterday and got mostly positive results. Oni and OnSpec are both really happy with the work I've sent them which is a great ego boost. Today I'm scanning the Maddy kettle thumbnails for Top shelf and working on completing The Situation for Tor. Can't wait to be throiugh this run of full time day job shifts, I'm feeling really burned out. It doesn't help that it's so hot here. My computer screen is wilting.

Also, I'm looking into getting a Cintiq tablet. I'm so excited about this....

11. Letter Days

I'm currently lettering the Situation comic. Of all the steps in a comic I'm probably least at ease with the lettering. I prefer hand written letters over fonts from the computer but I worry about legibility. I think the vast majority of comics are lettered using computer programs, at least when I google it all that comes up are computer lettering tutorials. Although I did find this Plea For Hand Lettering that sums up my thoughts. Especially the idea that comics and the letters are part of the same overall thing. That seems obvious but many people don't treat it that way. Another thing about lettering is I'm not sure how long it should take. I do it pretty fast so  I'm not researching it in case I'm going to fast....

13. Back In The Cave

coSo glad I left the studio intact at my mom. I’m working on The Situation for Tor and really loving it. Few distractions all tucked away in my mom’s unfinished basement playing music on my laptop. I also have a proposal open in a word document, which I hope to have finished by the time I reach Toronto. I’m currently reading Kelly link’s collection Magic for Beginners which is amazing. Worth it for the story the Cat Skin alone. I’m listening to Liszt and Radiohead and bluegrass and watching Extras. It’s raining all the time which suits me fine.

15. The Fop Sings! And It's About Jersey Shore!

Not since Bobby "Boris" Pickett's Monster Mash has a novelty song been this... sweet. It seems artist (and noted archaeologist) Owen Schumacher—who for the purpose of this article is writing in the third person—has recouped what would have been a lost weekend by elatedly recording his loving ode to all things GTL—namely, the epically catchy single, Never Fall in Love at the Jersey Shore! [Preview and purchase your copy today at iTunes, CD Baby or Amazon.]
Even long-time Jersey Shore fanatics Greg Gutfeld and the cast of Red Eye're psyched to the point of transvestism! So it's not just Owen on Hollywood and Vine!

What're you waiting for—a better Jersey Shore-themed novelty single?!

Oh, really? Oh—nevermind, then. You'll just be waiting a long time.

16. Mord & Scarskirt

Here are two character sketches from the comic The Situation, which I'm working on for Tor dot com. The story is written by Jeff VanderMeer and is an amazing, headspinning, beautiful and disturbing science fiction tale. The prose novel is available free here. It's about how to make a fish.

17. Dream Project With Fish

This is the reason I got into illustration in the first place. I found out that I'll definitely part of this amazing project, a science fiction comic book written by one of my favorite authors Jeff VanderMeer. Jeff writes the kind of stories that give me the same sense of wonder and surprise I got when I first started reading science fiction and fantasy. If you've never read his work please do, it's simply amazing. You can read more about this project here.
Also, I woke up this morning to find it was featured on the Forbidden Planet blog, a total thrill for me.
