I am pleased as punch that three of my dog illustrations have made it into Robynne Raye’s new book, 1000 Dog Portraits, now available on Amazon. Woot! Woot! What a way to honor Emma Lou (office assistant), Sarah (angel dog) and Lilibeth (angel dog)! I just ordered a few contributor copies. I never tire of seeing my work in print. It’s one of those healthy addictions. :) To celebrate, it’s time to draw some more.
They did me so proud in all pf the packaging, including a bio card with each pass case....
...AND, Check out the exclamation point!
I am an exclamation-point over-user, so I'm a little extra-thrilled with my exclamation point! :D
These hang-tags are to die for! (And the back of each doggie pass has my copyright and name on it, too. Pretty cool!)
So proud of these adorable little pass cases... and of my partnership with Bestever Japan.
Can't wait to share what is next!
You can get your very own pass case from my collection with Bestever
here.
Hugs!!
Howdy! I mentioned my partnership with Japanese company Bestever Japan a few weeks ago but wanted to take a moment today to give you a little more of a formal introduction to them and to what they do. Bestever Japan makes cute, and I mean C-U-T-E character products, with a tight focus on breed-specific dogs, and cats. How perfect for me, a former whimsical pet portrait artist turned children's illustrator turned art licensor! Kind of a written-in-the-stars type of partnership, wouldn't you say?
The entire product line is called The Kathy Weller Collection. On the site, they have a nice feature introducing me to the market, on every product detail page. |
Cool! |
Late last week, Bestever launched the first of our planned products: train pass cases in
six designs. Two doxie, two poodle, two chihuahua. How fun are they?
|
How cute are the backs? A different coordinating color, plus my name and copyright. |
Japan is full of commuters, so they will get a lot of cute USE out of these pass cases! My city Boston is too, and I cannot wait to tote around my own "T" pass hanging off my bag in one of these adorbie pass cases. They are so sweet, I just LOVE them. Especially the big fuzzy "o". They're awesome- it's like taking your stuffed animal with you every day. (I'll probably have to consciously stop myself from hugging my pass case in public.)
I've got my eye on the brown Doxie/purple background and the light tan Chihuahua / pink background.
|
Awwwww!!!!! |
There will be more launches soon. This is where patience comes in handy, because I'm excited about what's coming up— stuff that is especially useful for the modern, cuteness-addicted woman on the go. Okay, no more hints.
These are sold only in Japan BUT, if you simply CANNOT LIVE without one :) you can purchase one easily
here. (They accept credit cards and will ship to U.S. via
EMS shipping service. I can't speak to how much the shipping costs from Japan to U.S. are, but I can only imagine that it is pretty pricey. )
Anyway, that's all for this Bestever update. More news when I have it! :D

Fairy Redhead Girl and Husky Puppy is a cute painting of a little redheaded fairy and her adorable canine companion. Every dreamy-eyed girl needs a lovable pup. She is wearing a green dress and she has curly red hair. She has her hand around a little husky dog. I have to of my favorite things in this painting: Huskies and fairies. Also I’m redhead so I guess just painted myself with my dream dog.
This Print is 8 1/2″ x 11″ with a white 1″ inch border around the image for easy framing. Printed on high quality archival Epson ink jet paper. It comes unframed. Beautiful vibrant colors. Looks even better in person than on screen.
I have this print now available in my Etsy store.

YAY! Big news...
Popcorn Park is complete! Here are a few little snippets for your enjoyment. This is a large illustration with a lot of detail and a lot going on. I am learning to walk the fine line between having
lots of detail and
lots to look at, but not at the expense of building the special connection with the viewer. In other words, I want you to delight in the details and the story easily, but also
comfortably—no magnifying glass needed. (I think that I have achieved that balancing act well here!)
Want to see the entire thing? Popcorn Park is available as an art print in various sizes and on a few choice, super cool items in my Society 6 shop. It's also the only place where the entire piece can currently be seen. (Sooo... have I enticed you enough to take a look at the bigger picture?)
If you do check it out, and if you like it, please Tweet it, Pin it, Like it, share it with your doggie-loving friends in whatever way you prefer —there are share buttons right on the page in the shop. :D Hey, I'd love to do many many many more of these, and, if you'd love to see more of them too,
I'd love your help to get the word out! As always I am extremely grateful for your support, interest and enthusiasm for my work. I can't tell you how much it means to me. :D Couldn't do it without you!
XO Kathy
Here is one more tease at this big doggie scene! There is even a hint in this tease as to what the title is. Ok I'll spill - it's called Popcorn Park! I should have the final up soon! And... Yes! It will be available as a print and more in my
Society 6 shop.
Here is another peek at the Town Tails big scene work in progress I have been working on. (This is also doing double duty for Illustration Friday this week! The word this week is CARRY.)
Here is a tiny peek at a bigger picture I'm working on. Bright colors!
Lately, I've been experimenting with making these spiral-bound notebooks (or journals, or sketchbooks). It's so much fun to have a new, FUNCTIONAL way to share my art work! I've
always wanted to have my art on note books and the like. So, while I work on finding a partner with larger manufacturing abilities than myself, with a wider distribution than I myself can provide, it's exciting to make it happen all by myself. I really love these books.
This one features bunches of pages of speckled paper alternating with bunches of pages of lavender paper. I also added several pages of 100# watercolor paper at the front of the book for extra variety! (Maybe I should add a lavender scent, too? Hmm...)
The cover and back are a very rigid, acid-free matte board in purple. On the front and back cover, I adhered my art prints, printed on an acid- free 100# fine invitation paper.
The place holder ribbon is recycled - cute, eh? I originally received it from my pet-art buddy Christine Throckmorton of
I Heart Dogs Studio. (We did a custom pet portrait trade awhile back, and I did her doggie Rosie. Check out all the process posts
here.)
I've been using them and it is SO MUCH FUN for me. I'm a notebook-a-holic and sketch book-a-holic, and I have been wanting to make them for such a long time, so I can't get enough of them. I'm experimenting with different ways to add variety, embellishments, separators, and different papers within the books. I hope you like them! Once I have the time to really get into it, I will be creating some to sell in my Etsy shop. As always, if you feel so inclined, I'd
love to hear what you think. :)
What
boundaries (of the moral, integrity, and legal kind) do some companies and people cross in order to turn a profit? That's the subject of this illustration which I did years ago for the Graphic Artists Guild newsletter. It's fun to revisit and it still feels fresh to me. The subject matter, of course, is just as relevant as ever!
Do you LOVE the city? I do!This one's near and dear to my heart! I love the city! This little lady reminds me of "
That Girl" a young lady just itching to make her way in the world—and especially itching to make her mark in the Big City! It makes me reminisce for that feeling of being young, unencumbered, fancy-free and having enough independence AND enough guts to go ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING you desire, to explore, push yourself and see how far you can go! Oh, the twenties are wasted... what else? The twenties! Ha! But that's another blog post, right? Hey I am no longer twenty, but speaking from my heart, I can tell you that I personally feel this "can-do"attitude almost every day! (A little wisdom does help with that. ;) Getting older is not ALL that bad! )
Anyhow, I know many rural and suburbanite friends who thrive out in the 'burbs and in rural areas. Different strokes for different folks! I can completely understand the draw of the fresh air, wide open spaces and nature and all that comes along with it. I really do enjoy that from time to time! But, I gotta be honest... five or so days in remote rurality, and I'm clawing, c-l-a-w-i-n-g I tell you, to get back to where I thrive the best- THE CITY! Lucky for me, my husband Matt and I are on the same page with this! We are both city-dwellers, forever and ever!
Here's another
Queen for you today! I just love me a self-confident pooch, don't you?
This series was so fun to conceptualize and put together. I would love to expand upon it— I have so many more fresh ideas for the concept of diva/princess dogs that are just itching to be put to paper.
I love the sure smile and the happy sparkle in Queenie's eye... hope you do too!

Blue Ribbon Pooch art print on Etsy |
Today's art. Day Five!
Here's the perfect piece for any ambitious dog. Love that proud pooch!
Story.. Here is a very sweet and graceful little pup. I call her Fancy Girl. She looks confident, and she has reason to be be. Would you look at how well-behaved she is? Not chewing on a shoe, or eating a cushion. She's not even watching TV and lounging in her doggie condo. Well... I think she may be waiting for the proper signal from her human, so she can ditch the princess routine for the day and go chase a squirrel. Because she looks like she's got a secret or something.
Composition.. I like how she is not only a bold focal point, but she looks like she's on display in a fancy jewelry case, or perhaps at the museum. Funny, the things you can dissect from your work once it's complete. I don't remember once thinking of a jewelry box or a museum when illustrating this. Wait a minute... I
did think "Royal Family". That explains a lot.
Colors.. I love the combo of the bright sea green (as
Crayola likes to call it) and the citrusy lime. It's so fresh. Then the pops of grassy green and a bright, true yellow in the "museum case" border build nicely on the green theme. It seems like the colors shouldn't compliment each other, but they do. I greatly enjoy the putty color of the background as well—one of my favorite neutrals, somewhere between beige and grey. It's a great base color on which to tell a story, be it a demure or wild one—yet it keeps things sort of buttoned-up. Of course, the entire composition is based on a foundation of dark brown line. Brown IS the new black... well, it is in my world, anyway.

The Princess! See her Etsy listing here. |
Meet Princess! Look at how proud and happy she is!
Sometimes, I feel like i don't see enough yellow in art work. Do you feel this way, too? I think it's because it's often thought of as a kind of in-your-face aggressive color, and because of this it can get left out of all the fun. Well, yellow is a mastermind! It's probably the color I use most. In traditional media, it mixes well with just about everything, can double your palette and add so much depth to your paintings. (I probably glaze or wash 95% of my traditional work with yellow in some way or other at some point in a painting.) It also plays well with others in so many other ways and juxtapositions. You can use it as a tiny pop of color to accent, you can use it as a supporting player, or as the main star in the palette. It enhances or otherwise complements maybe colors than any other except for white, black and a few neutrals. Come to think of it, yellow is kind of the anti-neutral neutral! Or, maybe I'm writing this too early in the morning... Either way, I love this particular shade of yellow, especially when complemented with the other colors in this piece.
You can see a detail shot of this illustration on the
Etsy listing.

Another big scene coming 'atcha. This time, we have some roller skaters hijacking the greenway and some very excited young gymnasts warming up on the way to class... Gee, those gymnasts are so airy and graceful, they give me an idea...maybe I should add a Ballet school to a future big scene! What do you think?
Oh and if you are so inclined, please vote on your choice for my next art print! Thanks!

Here is my second sketch post of my Sketchbook Project sketchbook art. You know how I said this was a place to "be myself"? Well, one of my favorite things to draw is cats and dogs. That is one of the reasons why I was so excited to grab that theme. When I saw it there, staring at me, felt a pinch from the universe to take part in the project. It could not have come at a better time because I really need a little bit of inspiration-renewal right now.
On a whim, I went to Utrecht yesterday, to pick up a second Moleskine notebook, one just like the Sketchbook Project sketchbook, in order to use it to double-up these mighty thin pages. Well, they did *not* have the Moleskine size that I needed, but I *did* happen to visit during a BIG 3-day-only, 40% off EVERYTHING in the store, Back To School Sale! And I just so happened to have a gift certificate card which was so generously given to me by my
step-mom-in-law oh about 8 or so months ago! Since I've been working mostly digital this year, I haven't had the need to hit up Utrecht in the past few months. Plus, I'm generally a stock-piler when it comes to art supplies. I'm pretty faithful to my brands and products, so I like to keep extras of my staples around. It felt all breezy and fun to have an excuse to go!
I had such a great experience! And I *did* find something new, which was exciting and unusual for me. I found these Copic markers I'm always hearing about, and the extra-tiny ones (called
Multi-Liners) were just perfect to use for the drawing above! You get a line similar to a
Rapidograph with it, but the ink flow is way under control with these markers. There's no seepage into these pretty delicate Moleskine pages. I was able to draw over pencil lines, and then erase the pencil without any issue. They worked out great, and earn a thumbs up. I'm usually such a Rapidograph snob, but these are a really nice choice. I think I will keep these in the rotation.
My theme for my sketchbook is...
Raining Cats and Dogs! This is my first drawing in my Sketchbook Project sketch book. Instead of planning this out, I just went in with marker immediately, and did a stream of consciousness drawing. I figured that would really be the only way to get the "halo" of the unblemished sketchbook. This way I can now feel freer to not be all perfectionist with it. It is a sketchbook, after all, and I like that fact...
I am using this sketchbook as a place for me to "be myself" in whatever form it happens to take on any day when I work in it. So the art materials and style will surely vary, day to day. I am sure this effort will be different things for each person taking part in it. It will be very interesting to see the variety to each book, both physical and conceptually, when I go to visit all of the sketchbooks at the Brooklyn Library next year!

Rosie is complete! I am very happy with this portrait. It was so fun to work on. Even though I felt, in a way "freer" creatively with this portrait, note how my style is the same as my other portraits, extremely detailed and pretty tight. (See the monster I've created?? LOL just kidding folks! ;) ) Anyway I hope you have enjoyed checking out Rosie's beginning
1,
2 &
3, middle
1 &
2 and this final piece.
I am saying good bye to pet portraits now, but some time in the future I will be creating a book featuring many of my favorite pet portraits. It is a project that I plan to do in the future, probably this year. It's been my goal to do this for years, and I might have the time to do it this year! I'm not sure of which company I will use for my book, it depends on a few factors unknown at this time. But you can be assured that print quality is extremely important to me and will be a major priority.
To all those folks who have tuned in time and time again to see what I was up to on the pet portraiture front, a HUGE THANK YOU for all of your support, comments, feedback and general interest over the years. I'm forever grateful to you and I appreciate it so very much. Please keep in touch, and please continue to visit me here to see what I am up to! I can say that this year is going to be GREAT! XOXO
Please click on all images for a larger view.
I'm so excited to paint in Rosie's portrait. I love how it is coming out so far, but all that this portrait represents is so important to me as well. This will be my LAST pet portrait and I have thoroughy loved doing pet portraits for the last five years. Choosing to do pet portraits as a business touched on many key areas that I wanted to grow in, and - BINGO - it worked beautifully. I am so much smarter in these key areas now and so much wiser.
I reaped so many hidden-treasure benefits as well from doing pet portraits. Ah, I will miss doing them. I'm so proud of all I have accomplished personally and professionally with my pet portraits though. It's funny as a career artist the line is incredibly blurry between personally and professionally, isn't it? Starting pet portraits really built my skills to a point where they are stronger than I - gee - than I guess I ever imagined they might be. As an artist, I don't think I've have ever had a terrible confidence problem (although I'm human, I've had my days) - but another gift that pet portraits gave me along with further artistic growth has been the gift of building my confidence more, as well. This has also led to REAL business knowledge, practice and confidence, and the courage and confidence to build the dreams, for REAL, that for a long time I'd had, but I guess
I'd sort of buried*. So pet portraits have also been a HUGE catalyst for my growth in other creative areas.
After Rosie I will give the pet portrait business a big smoochy kiss and a bear hug goodbye, maybe some noogies. But until then, I'm going to enjoy completing my final portrait maybe more than I have out-and-out plain just enjoyed a portrait, just for the fun of it, just for the art of it, no strings attached, in quite awhile! :)
*I like to refer back to this post once in a blue moon when it is appropriate, because although I'm "eating crow" happily now (being a children's book artist), it just goes to show how a person's attitudes about something, about themselves and about what they are capable of, and let's be blunt, about taking criticism, can change so drastically. It's interesting to see everyone's path is different and unique, and the mental shifts we make when we make decisions for ourselves and what we want to focus on as our main goals.
The final sketch (pre-ink/paint) of Rosie is complete- please take a look! I incorporated many things into it which are special to Rosie and her family. See if you can guess which things are incorporated especially for Rosie and which things are simply incidentals to the theme! In a later Rosie post, I'll point out all of the details for you and you can see how many you guessed correctly!
