a few weeks ago i had a commission request for a little kokeshi from the sweetest lady via etsy. obsessed with all things japanese/kawaii since birth, well she didn't have to ask me twice. ;) her response to the finished painting made the rest of my year..."That is the cutest thing I have ever seen!! Thank you so much - I am so excited about it. It is perfect colors, perfect sweet girl. Our grandma was Japanese so it means a lot to us to have something to remind us of her!"

first things first...is it really only 4 days til Christmas?! wow. ok, i digress...

today's FEATURED PAINTING is this sweet little bluebird. reminiscent of spring? i'm sure. fitting, considering this Christmas will not be white (thanks, global warming. you stink). so, little Blue Rhapsody here is trying to make it easier on me...the warm temps in DECEMBER. :(

7. so....

i don't usually post full sketches until after my paintings are done, especially commissions....but because this was a request from the wonderful woman/mother who commissioned me in the first place, well i couldn't say no. :)

7/8 years ago i taught a really sweet little girl who was adopted into the arms of a really great lady. she reached out to me wanting a painting based on the illustrations in the beautiful book entitled, Motherbridge of Love...a custom painting (in my style) to represent the merging of cultures, ethnicities and, of course, the unconditional love that will forever envelop that very special little girl (who is not quite so little anymore-6th grade already?!) for a lifetime to come.

it's always a pleasure to take on any commission as i am always humbled and appreciative for the opportunity to have someone trust in my creative visions. to me, there is no greater compliment.

Midori Kokeshi

one of four kokeshis I am currently in the midst of painting. those who know me, know i am japanese obsessed. from sakura trees to teriyaki chicken to the language....obsessed. i love kokeshi dolls. love everything about them from the size to the intricacy of them. the japanese are master crafters and i have nothing but the utmost respect for them and their dedication and discipline in everything they do. should have been japanese....;)

midori is FOR SALE as a PRINT here:

she would make a lovely addition to any girl's room. can't wait to get working on the other three!

11. new series....

©the enchanted easel 2014
in the making.

i am crazy in love with all things japanese...from the culture to the food to the super cute art such as the company sanrio (hello kitty) and anime. oh, and let's not forget my obsession with cherry blossoms and the absolutely breathtakingly beautiful sakura trees. i mean even my fragrance is japanese cherry blossoms. as i said, obsessed. really need to go to japan once day...

anyhoo, i've been wanting to do a little series of kokeshi dolls for quite a while and i had these thumbnails drawn up since this past november. how tight do i work?! gosh, i could probably save myself the drawing step in between and just sketch these right onto the canvas, using these thumbnails as my guide. but....i'm too OCD for that (and love drawing just as much as painting) so i'm going to whip out 4 8x8 sketches and then transfer them to the canvas.

can not wait to paint these! :)

12. Poetry Friday: Curtsy by Justine Rowden

I recently had the pleasure of meeting poet Justine Rowden for coffee outside of Washington, DC, where we had a lovely chat about her picture book Paint Me a Poem: Poems Inspired by Masterpieces of Art. I'm not going to tell you about the book just yet, as I'm saving it for a little later this month. But I am going to share another of Justine's poems that happens to be about cherry blossoms, which are in full bloom right now in this part of the country. I love how Justine compares the beauty of the cherry blossoms to that of ballerinas.

When you're done reading the poem, waltz on over to Random Noodling if you are in the mood for more. Happy Poetry Friday!

Curtsy
By Justine Rowden

The cherry blossoms,
Floating in arabesque
Descend gracefully on stage
Of painterly gray flagstone.
Bowing in curtsy,
The petals, delicate folds
Of dancers' skirts
Pose, remain there
Attentive to the wind's applause.

17. Hanami in Brooklyn

After the chaos of selling books at the PEN Festival (a week of 12-hour days organizing, hefting boxes of books, ringing in hundreds of sales by hand, and processing returns), I'm finally getting my wish:

A day with no obligations.

If the weather holds, here's where I'm going this afternoon.

18. FRIENDSHIP WEEK: "Falling Flowers"

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–

Mayumie is excited about going someplace special with her grandmother. As they set off on their journey, she cannot guess where they are headed. It isn't to the zoo, or a museum, or shopping. They travel by train, and she realizes that they are going to Tokyo. After one failed guess after another, she begins to sulk. Finally they arrive at a small park where rows and rows of beautiful cherry trees are blossoming in a symphony of bright pink. Her grandmother says that when she was a girl, her own grandmother brought her here, and she returns year after year during the week the trees are in bloom. Mayumie goes home with a few blossoms as reminders of the special place, and goes to sleep dreaming of the falling flowers.

The pale blue boxes of text, set along the outer edge of an otherwise blank white page, resemble lovely scrolls. The soft watercolors that complete the spreads have a dreamlike quality. The pink blossom-filled trees resemble cotton candy rather than individual flowers in all but one scene, and the ethnicity of the characters is not obvious from the undefined, hazy art.

Purchase as needed.–DeAnn Okamura,

What is more fun than the zoo, more beautiful than the shrine, and prettier than the neon lights of Tokyo? Mayumie and her Grandmother are taking a train ride into the heart of the biggest city in Japan to see something special, but Grandmother won’t say what it is.
Mayumie tries to guess what this special place might be, but the excitement of taking a train and seeing the lights of the big city are almost thrilling enough. Finally, they turn down a quiet street in the middle of the city and find what Grandmother has been looking for: a grove of Japanese cherry trees, all in blossom.
This touching story of a little girl’s outing with her grandmother takes place in modern-day Japan, where cherry trees bloom for one week every spring. With text simple enough for the youngest readers, author Jennifer Reed captures the excitement and wonder of a little girl’s day in the big city, while Illustrator Dick Cole’s watercolors complement both the serenity and animation of Tokyo in the springtime.
