We got in the wrong lane one day last week and ended up at the strawberry fields quite by delightful accident. Last year they didn't have strawberries for sale perhaps because of drought conditions. This year they have strawberries in abundance. I love fresh produce right from the field where it is grown. The fruit delights the tastebuds and the juices fill us with pleasure. We slice them up, add sugar and serve them over vanilla ice cream. Next time we will probably have homemade strawberry shortcake with whipped cream!
Yes! Spring has sprung! The grass grows faster than we can mow it. The flowers bloom and too soon they die away. Their fragrance fills the air. (I miss that. I have dysnosmia, no sense of smell. Oddly on a rare occasion I may catch the briefest scent and it delights me. The rest of the time I smell nothing or even once in awhile I smell something unrecognizable, distorted scent that I cannot identify. It is a benefit at those times when a skunk is closeby, that is not a smell I miss. We don't truly appreciate our senses until we lose them.
So enjoy Spring with all of her gifts and delights for the senses, new mown grass, flowers in bloom, fruits ripe for the picking, the rich colors of every growing thing, and even birdsong. Enjoy them all. Happy Spring!
Our weather has changed this week from sweltering heat to a pleasant 80's. We are very happy to have had some all too brief rainfall.
Everyone is looking forward to fall. The occasional smell of wood smoke from a neighborhood woodstove is accepted as pleasant, unlike the smoke from wildfires. Fall means colorful trees in oranges, yellows, and reds. It is soon followed by falling leaves that blanket the ground and crunch underfoot. There is a crispness to the air.
Many around here grow their own vegetables and fruit in gardens of all sizes. Some dedicated homemakers can and freeze the harvest from their gardens. They will enjoy the results from now until it is time to plant again. Soon it will be time to put those gardens to bed except for those hardy farmers who will plant fall crops.
It is time to start thinking of holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is a good time to put the children to work making homemade decorations, or homemade gifts for Christmas. Decorations may be used for many years and be pleasant reminders of past celebrations. Help your children to understand that gift giving should come from the heart not from an ad in the newspaper. Everyone will appreciate the treasure that comes from little hands.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. AS WE ENJOY THE GIFTS, FOOD, FRIENDS AND CAROLS LET US REMEMBER ALWAYS THAT JESUS CHRIST IS THE REASON WE ARE CELEBRATING.
MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN HEAR THE STORY OF CHRIST'S BIRTH AND CHRIST'S LIFE OVER AND OVER AS THEY ARE GROWING UP. EXPLAIN WHY HE LIVED, DIED ON THE CROSS, AND LIVES AGAIN.
WHEN YOU ARE TELLING YOUR CHILDREN HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM REMIND THEM HOW MUCH JESUS LOVES THEM AND THAT HE WILL BE WITH THEM ALWAYS. LET THEM KNOW THAT JESUS IS REAL AND NOT JUST A FAIRY TALE.
TELL YOUR CHILDREN THE BIBLE IS GOD'S BOOK OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR OUR LIVES. THE ANSWERS TO LIFE'S PROBLEMS CAN ALL BE FOUND IN THERE. I WISH SOMEONE HAD SHARED THAT WITH ME WHEN I WAS YOUNG.
LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO LET ANY OPPORTUNITY TO TEACH YOUR KIDS SLIP AWAY.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Recently my husband and I paid a visit to the local Humane Society. I was quite tickled to see a young woman, a volunteer, sitting in a pen with a small dog on her lap. She was reading a children's book aloud to the dog and he was fascinated. I asked her about it and she told me they read to the dogs because they like the sound of a human voice. By the way, there were two more small dogs in the pen next to that one and they seemed to be enjoying the experience as much as the dog in the young woman's lap.
I remember reading somewhere that there is a program where children are told to read aloud to dogs. The purpose of this is to help the child read without feeling their reading is being judged. This is supposed the build the child's confidence so they will get over the fear of reading out loud in class.
Apparently reading benefits animals and humans alike. I love to read and I love to be read to. I highly recommend it to everyone.
By the way, we adopted a cute little Cheagal (Chihuahua/Beagle) named Bandon. He is well mannered, housebroken, loving and eager to please. I recommend that anyone interested in adopting a pet check with the local Humane Society. I'm very glad we did!

April is Parkinson's Disease Awareness month! Some of you may know about Parkinson's Disease from personal experience with a friend or relative living with the disease. Others of you may only know about PD from reading about Michael J. Fox, or reading his books or seeing him interviewed on television.
Like Michael, I too have PD. PD is a neuro-muscular disease that is progressive and, so far, incurable. My stepfather had PD. He lived with it for years. He had the familiar tremors, and it affected his ability to walk, talk and even swallow. In addition many PD patients struggle with depression.Toward the end of his life he had dementia. It was a sad thing to see happen to this once strong and healthy man.
After his death my younger brother was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and a few years later I learned that I had PD. When I was diagnosed I sank into a depression that was part physiological and part based on what I anticipated my future would be. As my tremors grew progressively worse I started taking medication to control the tremors and I got help for my depression.
For more information about Parkinson's Disease go to: www.pdf.org/about_pd
We don't yet have all the answers about what causes PD, but there is a lot of research going on to find the cause and, of course, a cure. We need the support of everyone out there! You can learn more at the following sites:

This morning my husband and I were watching Good Morning America, as we do every morning, when I suddenly decided to check out one of my pet peeves. Between 7:45AM and 7:55AM PST I counted 11 commercials, a segment of the show that was less than one minute long, and then 12 more commercials. Yes people, less than one minute of programming and 24 commercials in a ten minute period!!! It may have been even more, since they run together it is hard to count them. The greed is unbelievable. We are already paying for this programming because we receive it on satellite so why should we be subjected to this?
This is not an attack on Good Morning America, it is all of television broadcasting. Over time they have added more and more commercials to each program until we are now spending more time viewing commercials than we are viewing the program we tuned in to see. I wonder how many people agree that this is excessive? I am so angry that I am thinking of giving up television viewing entirely. It seems to me we are giving up a lot of time and money to be brainwashed by the advertisers who want us to give up even more of our money..
If we adults are being brainwashed by advertisers what about our children? How many ads are they seeing as they watch children's programming? Are they influencing your children or are you? Unfortunately I think the answer is obvious.
How do we combat this? I am open to suggestions. Do we quit watching television? Do we mute all commercials and leave the room? Do we sign a petition to put an end to this? Do we bombard the stations with letters and emails of complaint? Do we contact the FCC with our complaints? What do you think??? Your opinion is requested.

It is time for leaves to change color from green to yellow, orange, red and then brown. Then they will litter the ground and some will grumble feeling the need to clean them out of rain gutters and rake them into piles. There are those who will be thrilled to jump in those piles and squeal with delight. Children, bless them, love every season in its time.
We had two pygmy goats at one time. We named them Burt and Ernie. They were just kids when we adopted them and they were the most entertaining pets we have ever owned. We almost split our sides laughing at their antics. I mention them now because one of their favorite things was the fallen leaves from our sweet gum trees. The goats loved to eat them like potato chips. You could hear the crunch as they chewed them up. They never seemed to get enough of them. When the leaves were all gone I felt sorry for Burt and Ernie because their supply of snacks was gone until next year.
My husband starts looking forward to fall sometime in June. LOL! Yes, I guess you can tell he is not a big fan of hot weather. Here in Southern Oregon he is finding it still too hot (90's) for his taste even though it is fall. Of course, he will soon be complaining about the cold, or the rain, or the snow. Take your pick. Each season seems to have something to grouse about, but there are plenty of things to enjoy about each and every season in its own time.
Start thinking pumpkins, apple pies, beef stew and hot chili. Home baked bread and baking powder biscuits will warm our insides on a cool fall morning. Approaching holidays will fill our thoughts as we plan family gatherings and Christmas gifts and give much thought to the true meaning of the holiday. A cozy fire will warm our outsides in the evening as we read a favorite book or sit around the table playing monopoly with the family. It is all a good time.
Happy Fall everyone!

Children’s Ezine Guardian Angel Kids: Fun with Music – August 2012 Issue Welcome to the August 2012 issue of Guardian Angel Kids Ezine. We call it GAK because that’s the name of our gecko mascot! This month we celebrate the Fun of Music. The GAK staff can’t think of anything more universal than children enjoying music. They learn to respond and participate to music at a very early age.
As a child, Guardian Angel Publishing and Guardian Angel Kids publisher, Lynda S. Burch, loved to sing in the choir, learned the piano, and taught herself to play the organ. She enjoyed playing in the high school band from 7th grade through senior year of high school. She played the clarinet, soprano clarinet, and alto clarinet. Ms. Burch also sang in the school chorus and smaller groups and competed around the state just like Glee. As an adult Ms. Burch always made up songs and sang them to kids. One day she decided to write and record them instead of just singing them. These songs turned into over a hundred musical children’s books to be played on computers. Ms. Burch’s extended family from around the globe break into song about the weather, fun noodles in the swimming pool, or even a new alphabet song. What fun she has had with these musical books! We hope you develop a love for music as much as Ms. Burch and the GAK staff have.

LOVE....LOVE....LOVE....LOVE....LOVE....LOVE....BOOKS!
I love books! I think it is because I was read to often as a very young child. I memorized so many nursery rhymes my brain could hardly hold them. (I exaggerate.) I am sure everyone who came to visit had the burden of listening to a recitation but I can't be blamed for that it was my parents doing. I developed a love for reading at a young age and love it still. I think my favorite books were the Bobbsey Twins series. I am still an avid reader and that is what led me to want to write, and the obvious choice was childrens books.
Do you love books? Were you read to at an early age? What were some of your favorite books? How did they influence your life????
What are your children's favorite books? Have you shared some of your favorites with them?

OCTOBER BABY is a coming of age story of Hannah, a beautiful 19 year old college freshman ... When she discovers she was adopted it comes as a shock, but Hannah's world is rocked even more when she learns why she was never told before.
Don't Miss October Baby This Weekend! Coming to a theatre near you.
Last week, as we stopped for a traffic signal, I spotted a bumper sticker that I had never seen before. I want to share it because it speaks the truth and our country needs to wake up to that truth.
Pro Choice is a lie,
Babies don't choose to die!
I remember when Rowe vs Wade took affect. At that time a woman who was unmarried and pregnant had few choices. She may not have had access to birth control. She had to carry the burden of shame, the man didn't. She probably could not get a job to support herself or if she had one she very well might lose it. She might not even be able to find a place to live because of the shame and the lack of funds.
The man was not judged for getting her pregnant nor was he held responsible for the child they conceived together. He didn't need to fear losing his job and he might even have bragged to his friends about what he had done. So it was the woman and the child who suffered.
Is it any wonder that "some" of these women turned to back alley abortionists, killing their unborn child and risking their own lives in the process? Many died. Many developed infections or other damage and found themselves unable to ever have a child.
I remember feeling sympathy for these women, stuck between a rock and a hard place that they did not create alone.
Then the Supreme Court stepped in....now our courts could have held the father responsible and forced him to support the child and provide for the woman....or they could have made it illegal to deny a woman a job or place to live because she was pregnant....but no! The Supreme Court in all of its wisdom decided that abortion would be acceptable if we could only convince people that a fetus is not a human being....that a fetus is just tissue....that this tissue isn't something living that feels pain...therefore we can rip it out of a woman's body, dismember it without the pangs of guilt for having murdered a child. Shame on them and shame on us!
Women today have many choices: abstain from sex, use birth control, carry your baby to term and give it up for adoption, or carry it to term and love it. She can pursue child support through the courts and she can continue to hold down a job and support herself and her child. Abortion shouldn't be anyone's choice. Abortion is not birth control! This is a different world, wake up!!!
If you haven't seen the movie "Courageous" from filmmakers Alex and Stephen Kendrick, I highly recommend it! It is a film about honor. My husband and I were not familiar with the movies produced by the Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia until we heard about this movie.
My husband, who doesn't usually like "churchy things", loved this movie and hasn't stopped raving about it. Since then we have rented and viewed "Fireproof" and "Facing the Giants". We have yet to view "Flywheel" but trust me we will. They are all fantastic movies. Run, don't walk to the nearest video store.Unfortunately Netfllix doesn't have these on streaming, but perhaps they will in the future.

My husband and I have subscribed to Netflix for a long time. They have always been very efficient and shown great concern for good service and customer satisfaction. We have often wondered how they could do that and do it at the price they were charging.Recently they announced they would be splitting the company in two; Qwikster for DVD service and Netflix for streaming. They also were charging for both services separately making the cost almost double what we had been paying. They gave customers the option of taking both services or choosing just one for half the cost. We were a little disappointed. We would have preferred a gradual price increase, but we felt a price increase was probably necessary.Soon the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings. apologized, admitted this had been a mistake and backed off on plans to split into two companies. Unfortunately the company has paid dearly for the mistake; Netflix stocks dropped and something like 300,000 subscribers abandoned ship.But....we will stay with Netflix! They are the most conscientious company we have ever dealt with, often contacting us to make sure DVD's are arriving in a timely manner, etc. Cancelling our subscription would be a little like throwing out the baby with the bathwater! I think companies should be rewarded for providing good service and caring about their customers satisfaction. I sincerely hope many of those who abandoned ship will reconsider and come back to Netflix. In any case we are staying.
