51. Coming Attractions: November 2010

By Torsten Adair
The following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in November 2010. This list is not comprehensive, as there are over 350 books scheduled. Instead, I have selected titles which caught my interest.  If you would like to browse forthcoming graphic novels and related books at your leisure, click here. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore.

This month is traditionally the last month of new releases before the holiday gift giving season kicks into full gear.  Stores (and websites) usually have their displays set up the first weekend after Halloween, and publishers definitely want their titles in stores before Black Friday (and Cyber Monday).  There are a few titles scheduled for December, so I’ll present a list for that month.  I will also present a special list of blockbuster titles (gift books priced over $40) for those who have either been especially good this year or who shop for themselves.

Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone, titles may change, and covers may be altered. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library. Clicking on the publisher’s name will link to the publisher’s website, sometimes to the exact title. Clicking the ISBN-13 (also known as the Bookland EAN) will take you to the title as featured on BarnesAndNoble.com . I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below. Yes, you may promote your own work, but please include the ISBN for easy searching (and shopping!)

Disclaimer: I am employed by Barnes & Noble. This and any other posts by me have no official connection to B&N. Neither I or Heidi MacDonald receive any remuneration from linking to barnesandnoble.com . As always, feel free to send us your PR. Even better, send us some free books!

52. Jeff Kinney to Embark on Tour for Diary of a Wimpy Kid #5

Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney will embark on a national tour to promote the fifth book in his series, The Ugly Truth. The title comes out on November 9th. Five million copies have been ordered for the first printing.

Publisher’s Weekly has more: “The launch for The Ugly Truth will take place at BookPeople in Austin on the book’s on-sale date; the store will have a kid-sized version of the Cheese Touch board game, a dunk tank, and other activities on hand for the event.”

On November 21st, Kinney will be in New York City at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade for Greg Heffley’s debut as a giant balloon. The wimpy kid will appear alongside other literary characters including Horton the Elephant and Spider-Man. Right now, readers enter a sweepstakes for a trip to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.

53. MORE PHOTOS WIMPY KID MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY BALLOON

Earlier this summer Jeff Kinney and his trusted team ( Charles Kochman, Jason Wells and myself ) took a trip to the Macy's Studios just over the Hudson river in New Jersey. Here they make all the floats and balloons that are seen in the parade Thanksgiving morning. It was like visiting Santa's workshop.

54. What did you do this weekend?

Well, I know what I did!

Friday night I attended a show at the Society of Illustrators called Blow-Up. Three illustrators with vastly different backgrounds: Tomer Hanuka, Yuko Shimizu, and Sam Weber. It is quite possible the best show I have ever seen at the Society. If you are in the New York area I highly recommend that yo head over to 63rd street and take a look

Lauren Castillo chats it up.

Saturday was our neighborhood block party.

Where for some reason a neighbor asked if I want to judge the block Dog Show.
I could have said, "NO", but who turns down and offer like that? The categories were
1. Best dressed 2. Cutest 3. Most Unique. What kind of category is Most Unique anyway?

57. The Evolution of the Attack of the Fluffy Bunnies Cover

One day a year he is Santa Claus, but the other 364 days Dan Santat works as a children's book writer and commercial illustrator. He is also the creator of Disney's animated hit, "The Replacements"

Dan graduated with honors from the Art Center, College of Design.

He lives in Southern California with his wife, two kids, a cat, a bird, and one rabbit

For some time I had been looking for a project that would be just right for Dan's sensibilities. Crazy giant rabbits from outer space fit that bill.

From the beginning our ideas for the direction of the cover were in sync, vintage monster movie posters! Here are some that we looked at.

61. Interview Adventure series—Julia Denos • 6

Julia Denos is the illustrator of DOTTY (FALL 2010) by Erica S. Perl. She doesn't have an imaginary friend of her own, but she does have a loyal feline friend, Serif, who is black with just one white dot on his chest. He doesn't like to wear a leash, but he follows her where ever she goes. Julia grew up in a the small Connecticut town of Cheshire. Oddly I too am from this same town.

Julia's little house in Cheshire, Connecticut (age 9 depiction).

CW: We all got our start somewhere . . . where did you go to school to learn your craft?

JD: My mom was my first teacher. She wrote songs, poetry, helped us put on plays, and encouraged creativity in every moment. We went to the Yale Art Museum often–I liked to stare at Hopper's "Rooms By the Sea"–and to the library to hunt for the books wearing Reading Rainbow stickers.

62. Evolution of the MEANWHILE cover

Original hand-printed version of this "insane choose-own-adventure masterpiece" —Scott McCloud

About the MEANWHILE

Chocolate or Vanilla? This simple choice is all it takes to get started with Meanwhile, the wildly inventive creation of comics mastermind Jason Shiga, of whom Scott McCloud said “Crazy + Genius = Shiga.” Jimmy, whose every move is under your control, finds himself in a mad scientist’s lab, where he’s given a choice between three amazing objects: a mind-reading device, a time-travel machine, or the Killitron 3000 (which is as ominous as it sounds). Down each of these paths there are puzzles, mysterious clues, and shocking revelations. It’s up to the reader to lead Jimmy to success or disaster.
Meanwhile is a wholly original story of invention, discovery, and saving the world, told through a system of tabs that take you forward, backward, upside down, and right side up again. Each read creates a new adventure!

I first met Jason Shiga in a large ABRAMS conference room in 2008. At this point I had the opportunity to read Jason's early version of MEANWHILE, pictured above.
It was and is unlike any graphic novel I had ever seen. The amount of work and thought that went into it is staggering. On top of that the stories were great. Only like other books there wasn't one story to follow. This provided an interesting problem for the cover design. Jason's orginal cover was in Black and White and had elements that we liked but it wasn't quite to the place that we wanted. So . . . Ja

65. The Strange Case of Origami Yoda—Sneak Peak

THE STRANGE CASE OF ORIGAMI YODA

With every galley given out Tom Angleberger author of The Strange Case of Origami Yoda has made a Origami Yoda for each book. I forsee big things for this 'strange' book.

About the book
In this funny, uncannily wise portrait of the dynamics of a sixth-grade class and of the greatness that sometimes comes in unlikely packages, Dwight, a loser, talks to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. If that weren’t strange enough, the puppet is uncannily wise and prescient. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a classmate from popularity-crushing embarrassment with some well-timed advice. Dwight’s classmate Tommy wonders how Yoda can be so smart when Dwight himself is so clueless. With contributions from his puzzled classmates, he assembles the case file that forms this novel.

About the author
Applying for a job as a newspaper artist, Tom Angleberger was mistakenly assigned to cover local government meetings. Fifteen years and countless town council meetings later, he is still writing instead of drawing, currently as a columnist for the Roanoke Times in Roanoke, Virginia. He began work on his first book while in middle school. Tom is married to author-illustrator Cece Bell. They live in Christianburg, Virginia.

68. STRUTS & FRETS video Blog

Told in a voice that's honest, urgent, and hilarious, Struts & Frets will resonate not only with teenage musicians but with anyone who ever sat up all night listening to a favorite album, wondering if theyd ever find their place in the world.

Music is in Sammy's blood. His grandfather was a jazz musician, and Sammys indie rock band could be huge one day—if they don't self-destruct first. Winning the upcoming Battle of the Bands would justify all the bands compromises and reassure Sammy that his life's dream could become a reality. But practices are hard to schedule when Sammys grandfather is sick and getting worse, his mother is too busy to help either of them, and his best friend may want to be his girlfriend.

When everything in Sammys life seems to be headed for major catastrophe, will his music be enough to keep him together?

70. IT'S HERE! DOG DAYS

The long dog days of summer are over! We spent much of the spring and summer working on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days from the cover to the interior and then the intense marketing campagin. Finally we get to relax and celebrate our hard work. That is until book five . . .

But today is for celebrating. I have been on a train since 6 am headed to my college town of Providence, Rhode Island for Jeff's first signing at the Providence Place Mall ( which was just being built when I was a sophmore) today starting at 11am. We are expecting up to 4,000 people. It's going to be a long day. I'll be sure to post pictures ASAP.

Hope everyone enjoys the book.
