Peter Schneider and Elisabetta di Mambro, two producers, have picked up the worldwide rights to adapt Sara Gruen’s Water For Elephants into a musical. The production team hopes to have a Broadway run for this show.
Gruen will be involved with the creative process for this theatrical project. She originally wrote the book for National Novel Writing Month; Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill published it in May 2006.
Here’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: “The Depression-era novel, which has been published in 43 countries and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, follows aspiring veterinarian Jacob Jankowski as he joins the staff of Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, working with the circus’ new elephant. He bonds with the show’s equestrian star, who is married to its charismatic but troubled animal superintendent. The love-triangle title was previously adapted into a 2011 film starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz.”
Gisela Gagliardi, a Twilight fan visiting San Diego for Comic-Con, was hit by a car and killed while running across the street in front of the San Diego Convention Center.
The San Diego Union Tribune first reported the sad news ahead of the convention (which begins later this week): “Comic-Con fans said Gagliardi, who was with a group, had been in line since Sunday for the panel for ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2,’ set for Thursday afternoon in Hall H. The highly anticipated panel will include cast appearances and exclusive footage from the movie. Fans said the convention center staff was about to switch the line, so the beginning became the end, and that she was running to keeping her place in line.”
According to photos on her Facebook page, Gagliardi had attended the event in previous years.

Hunger Games fans have already started to speculate who will play the new characters that will be introduced in Catching Fire. Rumors flew that Twilight star Robert Pattinson was up for the role of Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games sequel.
In an interview with USA Today, Pattinson quashed those rumors: “I woke up this morning and saw all these things about me being cast in The Hunger Games. I was kind of curious for a second. So I called my agent… [my agent] was like no one’s going to offer you that part.”
To be fair, Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence had worked with Pattinson on the film adaptation of Sara Gruen‘s Water for Elephants.

Over at MTV News, sixteen upcoming movies were pitted against one another to determine the winner of the “MTV Movie Brawl 2012.” In the final round, almost four million votes were cast and Cosmopolis (a Don DeLillo adaptation starring Twilight actor Robert Pattinson) emerged victorious over The Hunger Games (starring Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence).
In an interview with MTV, director David Cronenberg explained how he first learned about the brawl: “Cosmopolis, while I think in terms of what it is as cinema is pretty hefty, but in terms of budget and promotion, it’s an underdog compared to something like the Dark Knight franchise. I really didn’t think we would have much of a chance. That really got my attention.”
In the video embedded above, MTV caught up with Cosmopolis actor Paul Giamatti to get his reaction on the movie’s win. Several of the Movie Brawl film are literary adaptations including John Carter, The Avengers, Snow White & the Huntsman, The Hobbitand The Dark Knight Rises.

We caught up with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to talk about writing scripts and the adaptation process. The highlights follow below…
Q: Describe the writing process when you are charged with adapting a book for a script versus writing an original script.
A: Each comes with its own challenges, but nothing is more difficult than starting with a blank page, as a writer does with an original project. I had the good fortune to start with an already fully fleshed out universe and mythology. But an adaptation comes with its own challenges: Honing a 500 page novel into a 110 page script. Externalizing very internal character arcs. Not pissing off the millions of fans around the world who don’t understand, or frankly care, that a book and a movie are very different animals, and that one can’t simply transfer the entire text into screenplay format and shoot it.

The trailer has been released in bite-sized pieces. Back in June, the MTV Movie Awards featured a two-minute teaser trailer. Just last week, Entertainment Weekly released a sixteen-second snippet from the theatrical trailer. (via Shelf Awareness)

Winter’s Bone actress Jennifer Lawrence will play Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games film adaptation. As of this writing, fans have left more than 380 comments on Facebook, many protesting the choice.
We’ve included some of the comments below. Some complain that Lawrence (pictured, via) is too “old” because she is 20-years-old. In the first book, Katniss is 16. Others find fault with her appearance; Lawrence has blond hair, milky-colored skin, and blue eyes. Author Suzanne Collins describes Katniss as being a brunette with an olive complexion and gray eyes.
Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, has said in past interviews that his hiring was met with initial fan protest. These days, Pattinson enjoys great popularity and has even gotten mobbed during outdoor movie shoots. What do you think?

I decide that what I love most is RPlatz's restless quest for knowledge—reading, they say, some 20 books during the filming of
Water for Elephants, none of those books, from what I can tell, easy:
Eat the Rich, Money, the Keith Richards autobiography, a book of David Foster Wallace essays. To not be able to walk a street, sit at a bar, or relax behind a curtain without the accompanying throng of fans (even if, in his case, they most unilaterally love him)—that sounds like hell to me. To escape inside a book or 20—he's no dummy, that RPlatz.

Last week Amazon exclusively released a long Water for Elephants film trailer. We’ve embedded the trailer above.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon has only aired full-length trailers for one other movie: The Dark Knight. The film will hit theaters on April 22nd.
Sara Gruen wrote Flying Changes and Water for Elephants as National Novel Writing Month projects. Here’s an excerpt from an inspirational letter she wrote to NaNoWriMo writers: “I can do this. WE can do this. However far behind you are, take comfort in knowing that there is somebody else out there in the same boat, and look for that next fun scene. And then the next. Critically-acclaimed director David Cronenberg will be adapting DeLillo’s Cosmopolis, and the cast is still being sorted out. The 2003 novel studying one eventful day in the life of a young New York City millionaire.

“Yesterday I went to see new moon with my twilight crazy friends. Not being a fan of twilight, I felt like an outcast tagging along. When Robert Pattinson came on the sceen, a 8 year old girl got up and screamed; “Cedric Digory lives! I must tell Dumbledore!” She then proceeded to run out of the cinema along with half the cinema including me. I’ve never felt so included. MLIA”
