1. Recent Remarks...

Here's a round up of some fun press over the past few days with some heady topics and interpretations of my books. I've always said that it is the reader who creates meaning in a book; the author merely creates the canvas.  The following three bits certainly prove the point. First off, Slate (which turns out not to be a roofing journal) offers up it's existential critique of Elephant &

2. Dubia-Bye!

As those of you who visit my FAQ site know, my schedule no longer allows me to do school visits, with the exception of the occasional chat with kids at Title 1 schools.  But when the American School of Dubai contacted my publishers to see if I'd be amenable to drop by, the opportunity was too great to pass up. Firstly, Jack Gantos had a great time there.  Secondly, while much of my favorite

3. New Career

As all of the magazines & newspapers are (ironically) writing pieces about the imminent demise of the book, this weekend I took it upon myself to train in an alternate career just in case.Man, I really hope books don't disappear, because I stink. Thanks to the Local 98 for stifling their laughter.

6. What Would I Really Do?

Let’s be honest I’m not quite twenty years old, witch means if had million dollars i would probably spend it all on what some people would consider pointless things. I would most likely not invest the money or try to live off the interest, what i would do is take it and have an amazing time with a couple of my closest friends. Of course i would help my parents out a little bit, I definitely ow them that much.

After that was done well then i party , haha!

1. Go sky diving, always wanted to do it.

2. Drive race-car at a super speedway, and definitely race some people!

3. Get my pilots license , so cool to fly a plan

4. Of course I’d end up buying a car, witch one I haven’t decided yet.

5. Make a point to travel all around the world, So awesome to see every country, and I’d like to do it by backpacking , see it the way it is.

6. By more lottery tickets… a lot more :P

7. Go to professional mountain biking clinic

8. Front row seats to these bands, Metalica, Tragically Hip, David Wilcox, Three Days Grace, Nickel back, Disturbed, Foo-fighters, and that’s just a few.

9. Buy a mac-book, just because ill actually be able to afford for once.

10. Go on a cruise ( I’ve never been on one).

11. Take horse riding lessons.

12. Ride the all the biggest and fastest Roller Coasters in the world!dr

13. Do what ever else came to mind.

And when I look back at where all the money went, just smile and enjoy the rest of my life because its the experiences that count the most.

8. A tale of two laundromats

It was the best of spin cycles... It was the worst of spin cycles...As you might suspect, I had a fond attachment to the Knuffle Bunny Laundromat, especially after publication when the M machine became a place of (occasional) pilgrimage. But times change. A few months after I moved from Brooklyn, I returned for a weekend to attend the Brooklyn Book Festival. Visiting pal Jackie Woodson (who

9. Greetings from DC

The past few days in DC were good fun. We had nice crowds in Fairfax, VA and at the National Zoo for my readings of Elephant and Piggie and Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed.I had some time off to check out some great shows at various museums on the Mall and made a quick speech at PBS Kids.I also spent a morning at the Kennedy Center meeting with the theater staff and working on next May's Knuffle

10. A Helluva Town(s)…

Special thanks to the Chicago Public Library whose 2008 list of the Best of the Best included Knuffle Bunny Too, My Friend is Sad!, and Today I Will Fly! (Little known Mo-trivia: while New Orleans is my hometown, I was actually born in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines) Brooklyn-wise, I spent last evening at the “State of the Borough Address”, where Knuffle Bunny Too and I were ‘

As we here at Oxford try to keep track of the torrent of new words entering the English language, we notice certain peculiar patterns developing. One of the most popular methods of forming a new word these days is by fusing the parts of existing ones like Frankenstein’s monster. The two winners in the “New Word Open Mic” I mentioned a few weeks ago are good examples of this blending process in action: hangry is a blend of hungry and angry, while newsrotica blends news and erotica. Sometimes a piece of a word can get downright gregarious, uniting with a whole slew of fellow members of the lexicon. Juice manufacturers rely on us to recognize that the cran- of cranberry can mix it up with other fruit names to form cran-raspberry, cran-strawberry, cran-grape, cran-apple, cran-pineapple, and so forth. And the fast food industry has inundated us with all manner of burgers since the original hamburger, like turkeyburger, chickenburger, baconburger, steakburger, and veggieburger. (Of course, it was inevitable that someone had to come up with the cranburger.) (more…)
