Scribner, an imprint at Simon & Schuster, has launched a new digital publication called Scribner Magazine.

Here’s more from the press release: “Inspired by the publisher’s celebrated sister publication Scribner’s Magazine (1887-1939), but reimagined for the 21st century reader, Scribner Magazine will feature original writing and interactive media, along with written and audio book excerpts, photo galleries, author-curated music playlists, bookseller reviews, and articles that offer a glimpse inside the world of publishing. Scribner Magazine also integrates Scribner’s popular Twitter feed, and the site highlights current Scribner book news and author events, so consumers can stay informed about their favorite writers.”

The first issue features a diverse range of content such as rare photographs from the publication of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises: The Hemingway Library Edition, an audio recording of the “Something That Needs Nothing” short story written and read by Miranda July, and pieces from several high profile contributors. Novelist Anthony Doerr wrote an essay about the writing process for All The Light We Cannot See, actor James Franco reveals how he became a writer in an essay, and Betsy Burton, a bookseller from The King’s English Bookshop, penned a review of Nora Webster by Colm Tóibín.

The We Need Diverse Books team have launched a crowdfunding venture on Indiegogo.

This group hope to raise $100,000.00 that will be used towards several different projects. Future plans include bringing diverse books and authors into disadvantaged schools, initiating the Walter Dean Myers Award & Grant program, and launching the inaugural Kidlit Diversity Festival in Washington, D.C.

Milq, a company that powers a culture-sharing application and website, has launched a new content category for books. Through a new agreement, Simon & Schuster will serve as its exclusive publishing house partner.

According to the press release, the “books” feature allows users to “share audio and video around their favorite books on Milq, organizing them into collaborative, interactive playlists called Beads.” Simon & Schuster will establish two beads, “What Are You Reading?” and “Books That Changed My Life,” that will be continually updated with responses from the publisher’s writers.

Several authors are already taking part by creating beads. Steve Jobs author Walter Isaacson constructed a “Great Digital Innovations” bead with vintage footage of the video game SpaceWar! and of “The Mother of All Demos.” After novelist Anna Todd hopes fans will contribute songs to her “Soundtrack to After” bead. The Book Riot team has launched a new comics website called “Panels.”

2% of this venture’s gross revenue will be donated to philanthropic causes. The website has formed a partnership with the Open Books literacy organization. Editor Paul Montgomery penned a welcome letter for readers. Here’s an excerpt:

“We wanted to drum up a community of seasoned comic book readers as well as novices to the form. That’s who we hope to speak to and also who we are. We looked for a wide array of voices. St. Martin's Press has teamed up with the Swagbucks website to launch a new digital literature channel called READ. According to the press release, "READ connects authors with potential readers using rich data on genre preferences, favorite subjects, news content and other behavioral trends to match individual titles to the most relevant prospective readers." Some of the authors that will be featured include Mary Kay Andrews, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Rainbow Rowell, and more. Visitors will be able to access excerpts, book trailers, bonus content, and newsletters. I know from personal experience that a flooded email inbox can seriously disrupt your writing process.

Author and software expert Jill Duffy just published Get Organized: How to Clean Up Your Messy Digital Life, so we asked her for some pointers about keeping email under control. She offered this advice:

The most important way I keep email at bay is to not believe that email is too important. The more we believe that email is “crucial,” than a life-changing opportunity might be buried somewhere in that inbox, or that we are letting down every single person who is awaiting a reply, the more email gets us. Being in control of email is so much about letting go. In the grand scheme of things, email isn’t that important. You don’t need to tend to it all day long. You can delete messages—you don’t have to save everything.

In a letter to readers, TPM founder Josh Marshall explained his logic and asked: “Are Operations Like Flipboard Scams Against Publishers?” Check it out:

But say you find TPM on Flipboard, decide it’s great and add it to your viewing routine on Flipboard. Probably you just keep reading us on Flipboard. Clearly you like Flipboard or you wouldn’t be using it. So why would you start visiting TPM? You likely won’t. That may be great for you. It’s definitely great for Flipboard. But is it great for us? Not really. It boosts my ego, I guess. And more people may know about us. But where and how does that turn into our ability to convert that ‘audience’ into a revenue stream that allows us to create our product? I don’t think it does. Or it does in so in such a trivial and unquantifiable way as to be meaningless.

The site works on credits, rewarding readers for providing feedback to writers. If you don’t want to read other writers’ work, you can pay for credits to get your ideas reviewed. The developer explained:

Try different variations of your story to see which perform best. Find out what people think, and how it makes them feel. Earn achievements. Climb the leaderboard. You retain all rights and ownership to the work you publish. You have full control over your work at any time. Each submission is limited to 1600 characters, approximately 200-300 words, depending on your writing style.

The New York Times has started a “serendipitous poetry”-themed tumblr blog called ”Times Haiku.”

A team of computer programmers developed a special algorithm that scans the publication’s articles and subsequently generates haikus.

You can read haikus derived from different NYT pieces, including an article on carrot purée, a profile on stand-up comedian Colin Quinn, and a special Q&A with the Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. According to Shelf Life, this blog may continue on even after the end of this month.

Like the George R. R. Martin series, the Game of Thrones TV adaptation boasts a very large cast. This GIF guide showcases all of the primary characters such as Jon Snow, Margaery Tyrell, and Tyrion Lannister.

HBO also published a viewer’s guide on the Game of Thrones Facebook page. With this interactive map, fans can explore the different locations of Westeros. So far, it has attracted more than 35,000 “likes.”

Ever wish you could collaborate with pop star Carly Rae Jepsen? PSFK reports that Coca-Cola and American Idol have partnered up to sponsor a crowdsourcing venture called ”Project Harmony.”

For eight weeks, Jepsen’s fans are invited to help compose the lyrics for a new song. The video embedded above features Jepsen introducing the project and talking about the first fan poll: “Which lyrics should Carly use in the first stanza of the first verse for her new hit song, ‘Take A Picture?’”

Once completed, Jepsen will perform the finished piece on American Idol‘s season 12 finale which airs the week of May 12th. Currently, participants are tasked with answering the next poll: “What should the theme of Carly’s Perfect Harmony Finale Performance be?” (via Beta Beat)

What if George R.R. Martin had written his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, for a young-adult audience? A group of YouTube filmmakers has launched a comedic web series called “School of Thrones.”

In this project, the Game of Thrones characters have been re-imagined as teenage students who attend Westeros Valley High School. We’ve embedded the first full episode above–what do you think?

The series premiere episode, “Prom Night Is Coming,” was released on March 10th and has already attracted more than 417,000 views. Episode two will be posted up on March 17th and episode three will follow on March 24th. (via Jezebel)

Google has created an interactive Google Doodle celebrating Douglas Adams‘ 61st birthday. The UK author is best known for his comedic science-fiction series, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Check out this YouTube video which shows how internet users can interact with this animated doodle. Random House posted a screenshot of the art piece on Facebook and drew 266 “likes.”

Digital publishing community Wattpad now counts ten million uploads.

Members of the community upload one million new pieces on a monthly basis. Back in August 2011, the site reached one million site users. Several Wattpad writers, including book blogger Brittany Geragotelis and UK novelist Beth Reekles, have landed book deals with traditional publishing houses.

In an email announcement, product marketing manager Amy Martin shared the company’s next goal: “Given current growth rates we’re only looking at another three years until we reach 129 million uploads. That’s our next target because according to engineers working on the Google Books project it’s the total number of unique books that have been published worldwide since the advent of printing.”

One of the things that I always want to know as a reader (and I think other readers feel the same way) is we love to know the inspiration behind things. Collections is one way of doing that, of saying “here are all the places that influenced this book.” There are authors who frequently say when they are coming up with characters, they associate them with some kind of music. Basically, being able to give a peek into the creative process and how it relates back to the influences behind a character, storyline, or series. We think collections can be a really great way to do that, as well as show off the things that interest them within the world of books.

Mamiverse, the family lifestyle website aimed at the moms in the Latino community, has hired former HarperCollins children’s editor Adriana Dominguez to lead its new Books section.

Rene Alegria, former publisher of HarperCollins’ Rayo imprint, started Mamiverse in 2011, and the site now generates more than one million views every month.

Mamiverse Books will feature book reviews and interviews. In addition, the organization aims to launch a national reading campaign targeting Latinos called the “Mamiverse Reads Pledge Drive.”
