1. Up On The Lowbrow With Artist Brian Gray

The Artwork of Brian Gray

As a young artist Brian Gray had been influenced by graffiti art, vintage comic books, old school hand drawn advertising, MAD Magazine, and the Saturday morning cartoons of the 80’s. As his artwork developed Brian became heavily influenced by the “lowbrow” art movement and the underground art scene that dominates so much of Los Angeles and the West Coast scene in general. He began to follow several artists he read about in various art magazines and on numerous art blogs. Artists such as Joe Ledbetter, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Greg "Craola" Simkins, David Hovarth, and Buff Monster, are some of the artists that have made a lasting impression on Brian over recent years. Brian best describes his art as, “fun, imaginative, and whimsical but, with a slight touch of a hidden darkness.”

5.

Here's a drawing from a 15 minute sketch challenge two weeks ago! Summer in the Pacific Northwest this year has been coming in fits and starts but not staying. We have more clouds than sun. This is my attempt to visual who is causing this problem... at least from a metaphoric pov...
Hope you dig it!

8. R. Crumb: Lines Drawn On Paper A Retrospective of the work of R. Crumb

March 23 - April 30, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, March 25, 7:00pm, VIP Reception 6:00 - 7:00pm

The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators is proud to present “R. Crumb: Lines Drawn On Paper,” a diverse exhibition of work spanning the past four decades by the inimitable R. Crumb. This 90-piece exhibit showcases rare and seminal examples of original art including covers and interior pages from ZAP, San Francisco Comic Book, Head Comix, Bijou Funnies, The East Village Other, Snatch Comics, Motor City Comics, Your Hytone Comix, Big Ass Comics, The People’s Comics, Despair, Black & White Comics, Arcade, Hup and Weirdo. This exhibit features such counter-culture icons as Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, Shuman the Human, Bo Bo Bolinski, Lenore Goldberg and Her Girl Commandos, Horny Harriet Hotpants, Boingy Baxter, Angelfood McSpade and a special guest appearance by the ol’ pooperoo himself—R. Crumb. Works will be on display for six weeks, beginning March 23rd through April 30th in the Museum’s galleries in New York City’s Upper East Side.

Robert Crumb (b. 1943) is considered the premiere underground comix artist of his generation. Beginning with the launch of Zap Comics in 1967, Crumb deconstructed the American comic book, revolutionizing the form forever. Over four decades later, his impact continues to be felt worldwide.

“God bless Crumb. I’ve always been happy that there was someone as sick and twisted as I am.” —George Carlin

This retrospective, curated by BLAB! magazine founder Monte Beauchamp, editor of The Life and Times of R. Crumb (St. Martin’s Press), presents key pieces culled from the underground art collection of Eric Sack, with contributions from Paul Morris and John Lautemann. R. Crumb: Lines Drawn on Paper is made possible in part with public funds from the Fund for Creative Communities, supported by New York State Council on the Arts and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

10. High On Lowbrow - The Poster Art of Jason Cooper

Born in a small conservative town in the Bible Belt of the Deep South, artist Jason Cooper was raised on a steady diet of KISS, movie monsters, punk rock, skateboarding and heavy metal. It’s no surprise then that this unusual paradox led his artistic endeavors into the unorthodox world of blotter acid art, rock posters, tattoo art and other underground forms of self-expression.

Combining his lowbrow style and often dark humor with his interests in religious iconography and erotica, Jason forges his own path in a world of safe and stagnate art to create emotionally challenging works which invoke the visual senses to examine the always present — and sometimes uncomfortable — under layer of motive and meaning.

Jason's screen printed posters can be found around the world, in galleries from San Francisco to Manchester, and on display at Hard Rock Cafe restuarants everywhere. He also participates regularly in solo and group exhibitions, which have included Grasping at Straws (2001), The Meat Annex (2002), Artifacts of the Improbable (2002), Mundo Gigantico del Rock (2003), Complimentary Headache (2004), and Graphic Noise (2005), and has been an active participant in the Flatstock sh

15.

Hi guys,
These are the first four pages of art from Volume 6 of art for my graphic novel. Each Volume opens with a nightmare sequence and then goes back into the story. The nightmares symbolize what is happening internally to one of the main characters. They change as the story changes. That's about all I can give away of the story at this point. I hope to have it finished by the end of this year. I've been working on it now for two years..
You can see more on my blog:

Be well,
Mike

16. You Don't Know Me!

Another NEW painting for 2010. I'm doing a series of these type of paintings for this next month or so,... all the while working on a couple of deadlines and finishing up on some design work and drawing art for my graphic novel... no rest for the weary.

Hope all is well.

17. First Acrylic painting for 2010!

I've finally started my winter painting for 2010! Off to a slow start because I'm busy with other deadlines but here it is. "Into the Atom Age"... which was from a sketch I had and was going to make a graphic novel about it but there was another idea that was way more pressing. I'm coming to the last stretch of doing the art for that and thinking about a few other stories I'm working on.
As always, this painting is available as a print on www.imagekind.com along with a bunch of other art that I do. Check it out!
