1. Announcement - A Latte A Day is MOVING

Changes are coming down the pipes which I would prefer to avoid but can't. Recently, Blogger notified all users that it will no longer support FTP after March 26, 2010. This will affect A Latte A Day as I use FTP to publish my blog. While I am not happy about this, it is what it is. This also goes for my Treasure to Be Found blog.

So, I have to make some decisions about whether I want to move my blog(s) to a new URL(s) or possibly move them to WordPress. As my schedule is pretty busy at the moment, I don't know if I will have the time to move them by the deadline. I am told once the deadline passes, the blogs will still be viewable but neither me or you will be able to post or comment to it.

In the interim please bookmark my www dot designerm dot com website if you haven't already done so. There you'll currently find that this blog, A Latte A Day, is linked to the word NEWS. When I move my blog, I will also provide links under NEWS to the new blog.

If this is all too confusing, you can contact me on Facebook or email me at designerm @ hotmail dot com and I will direct you to the new blog once it's up and running. After March 26th, 2010, I won't be able to post to this blog, so please check my website for updates!

Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

2. It's All About the Ride

Meet twinkle my driving companion. He digs Volkswagen Passats like I do. He jumped into my car one day while we were having coffee at Starbucks and has taken up residency.

He's living the good life, sitting on the sunroof catching some rays, so happy the sun is shining today!

It's time to work out and get into shape for summer and swimsuit season!

This car has amazing speed and Twinkle likes to drive fast- it's all about the ride baby!

5. New work!

Since about May of this year I've discovered a love for abstracts and have been cranking them out like crazy since then. So far I've got about 64 of them. (More if you count the different versions of one image) You can check out more of them and purchase if you like here: http://www.imagekind.com/GalleryProfile.aspx?gid=97e5fe65-5006-4c0e-9745-c778120eb248
Enjoy the rest of the summer.

6. Freezer Jam

When my parents were here for a visit, Mom left us some of her homemade freezer jam. It was so delicious that when we got down to the bottom of the jar I had to do something quick, (lest we have mutiny on our hands!) so I made a dozen jars of strawberry freezer jam. As long as I can remember, my mom, my grandmother, and great aunt, have been making homemade freezer jam from the fruits of their gardens, so I'm carrying the torch. The batch I made was so yummy too, and as you can see, I made it just in time for my birthday. "Why not treat myself?" I said. :)

It's been fun giving away more than we've eaten so far, but don't you think sharing things that make you happy, give you more happiness in return? I do. Have a great weekend!

7. Tree Business

Hugging makes a person feel good doesn't it? Hugging lets the person know you really care about them. Do you give real hugs or perfunctory hugs? I really dislike perfunctory hugs, so I give the real thing, every time. So today, I challenge you, give someone a hug and mean it!

10. Summer Smells

Don't you just love this weather? It's in the high 80's here today. Last night we sat on the deck and you could smell all the BBQ's in the neighborhood wafting our way. We discussed how great it would be to bottle that BBQ smell, perhaps mist it over the deck sporadically; yummy! With summer BBQ's come things like pasta salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, brownies, and cherry crisp. Wow! My mouth is watering, is yours?

I remember as a young girl, our families had a yearly family reunion and everyone would bring their favorite dishes to pass. What a feast! Not to mention, catching up with loved ones, great stories and loads of laughter. My, but the stories were GRAND.

Here's an illustration inspired by summer, loved ones, and good food. The pasta salad was a yummy dish my talented SIL Nelda Jane made for us while we visited her and my brother Buck last year in Florida. K and I still rave over the fact that they were the most incredible host and hostess - Buck and Nelda, thanks for the good time, and for spoiling us-you rock! Wish we were there!

Today is my Mom's Birthday, and she and Dad are spending it with Buck and Nelda down south, WE LOVE YOU MOM and hope you have the best birthday ever! We can't wait to see you and Dad in a few days!

11. Feathers and Flowers

Today I spotted the male cardinal at the bird feeder. We're glad he's still around, although he doesn't sing like he use to, so sad.

Here's a photo of his (and her) apartment, or at least it was until that fateful night. Hopefully, the male will find a new mate, and maybe they'll build their nest here again next year. As an update, we found another egg under the tree, that would bring the egg count to 7 total!

More from behind my lens: Iris power, yay! I love these irises, they're variegated and such a deep purple, they're almost blue. They are almost spent now, but I've taken lots of photos. More lovely colors to come.

13. Fridayness

I was feeling inspired yesterday and created this fun illustration. My SIL has a collection of cobalt blue dishes and vases. My brother and SIL live in tropical weather and love to fish and also collect decor with a tropical feel to it. For a larger image visit here. The photos may take a moment to load, then just mouse over the top left thumbnail. Have an awesome Friday!

14. Sugary

Ok, so a bit "sugary" but hey, I was at the store waiting for hubby to pick up some paint so I sat and sketched this. I didn't have a pencil with me so used a pen I found in our vehicle.

16. Randomness

Did I say how much I LOVE this new camera? Especially the telephoto lens-it's amazing! Here I am hanging out at my favorite Starbucks. I still need a few filters and a macro but they'll come soon enough. I love black and whites just as much as color photos and can never decide which I like better, it all depends on my mood.

I changed up the order of the photos, Mr. Beaver below just looked too strange being at the top of this post.

My first real taste of summer came when I was home at my parents who live on the Great Lakes of Michigan. These photos were taken off their front deck. The ships that ride the lakes are magnificent when you see them up this close and I never tire of watching them go by. We've recorded them from all over the world. They make their way up through the various locks from the ocean. When they start running again it means the ice has all melted and it's the signal for spring and summer to begin...then boating and water skiing and just hanging out on the beach- my kind of living!

I ran a little over 4 miles around the East lake this morning. The weather is about 82 now and gorgeous-finally! On my trips around the lake I have been fortunate enough to see a lot wildlife and came upon a beaver twice in the past week. I know the damage they can do but still- you can appreciate these industrious characters when you see one. K and I stalked this one for a little over 1/2 hour so we could get a good photo. He was about 4 1/2 feet in total length, his tail about 2 1/2 of that.

Now I have a big job ahead of me and it's off to plant flowers. The iris' are just starting to open around the yard so I'll be posting photos of them later. Enjoy your Saturday!

More tomorrow...

17. Cover Completed

Remember when I made reference to an illustration of a CD cover I was working on? I've finished it and I'm now happy with the results. I've left header room for the title.

I've had to place a copyright on the illustration which I've found I have to do more and more. Recently I found out that in China, someone using an online store (very similar to Ebay) illegally downloaded and posted my illustration and used it to help sell some Aerapostle jeans they had for sale. Everything on the website of course was in Chinese which didn't help and I had to log in and register to communicate with them. Easy enough if you could read their language. Now how does one go after someone who breaks US law internationally? They never asked nor had my permission to post my artwork and have clearly broken the laws of US copyright infringement. I'm disgusted to say the least. but let's not dampen the day. So please try to understand when you see that I've added copyright to my illustrations.

18. Garden

For IF's "garden."
Spring is fast approaching and I can't wait to work in our gardens. Last weekend the temperature on Saturday was 65 degrees. I wanted to get my shovel and wellies out and start planting. Right now it is 11 degrees with a biting north wind. I think my planting days are still far off in the distance though one can dream and prepare. I think I'll pull out my seed pots and start there, maybe that will encourage spring to come sooner.
And another, older illustration that fits this theme well, "roots."

19. Book Browsing

I headed to Parables for book browsing and grabbed one off the shelf to sketch. I haven't read it, but liked the cover so it became part of my prop along with my new handbag and leather pencil case which I carry with me at all times. I love to capture moments whenever I have the opportunity.

Today it rained and snowed simutaneously and was relatively warm (low 40's) and you needed and umbrella however by the time I left the office for home it had turned to freezing and I had to scrape the windows. I cranked up the heat and my feet have finally thawed. Not a good idea to stand in snow and ice while scraping your windows. I should have had boots on but who was to know?

21. Theory

While waiting in line to have my vehicle washed yesterday, I did a quick sketch in semi-blind contour of the car ahead of me going through the car wash. It occured to me that my illustration fit the theme for this week's Illustration Friday word "theory."

Here's the true fact and theory behind getting my car/vehicle washed. Every time I wash my vehicle it ultimately snows or rains right afterwards. It's the weather theory of "I-know you will, so I will". The weather and I don't have a great relationship when it comes to washing my vehicle. Today it is suppose to snow about 1 inch. The dark clouds are looming in the sky. That means I won't make it to work with a clean vehicle again tomorrow as the roads will be covered with sand and salt-it never fails!

For more blind contours view them here, here and here.
