1. A Posy

Beauty discarded - masses of pansies were upended in a neighbor's green bin, probably to make way for new midsummer flowers from the nursery.  They were still very pretty and I picked a handful to paint,  like this:

the pencil sketch,
followed by colour blocking and shaping.

More painting instructions from my watercolour classes are over on my watercolour blog, http://francestyrrell.blogspot.ca/.  Both blogs have been quiet of late, but I am here and working on pretty things yet to be displayed.  So many flowers, and summer so short!

"There's pansies, that's for thoughts",
William Shakespeare, Hamlet (Act IV, SceneV)

2. a pickle for patty

here is the finished illustration for the story 'a pickle for patty'. to be featured in the october/november issue of 'stories for children' magazine.
is it wrong to say how fond i am of my own little painting here?;) it's that little pippa (the one with the pigtails) that i absolutely just LOVE! so damn adorable!:)
i will post the link to the finished magazine as soon as it is made available to me so you can read the story that goes along with the illustration.
thanks again to rosemarie over at SFC for the fantastic opportunity to illustrate for her magazine once again.

BTW, a print of this is for sale in my etsy shop under the title 'a picnicing we will go...'

4. a pickle for patty~sketch

next up...another illustration for stories for children magazine www.storiesforchildrenmagazine.com this one to be featured in their october 2011 issue.
it's about a prissy and pouty little girl named patty porter, her perky friend pippa and pippa's pesky puppy named piper. oh...and a very much coveted pickle;)
lots of alliteration going on in this sweet little story...from the pink pansies on the park path to the purple picnic blanket and the sweet little girls and the puppy.
can't wait to start working on this...:)

5. Garden

For IF's "garden."
Spring is fast approaching and I can't wait to work in our gardens. Last weekend the temperature on Saturday was 65 degrees. I wanted to get my shovel and wellies out and start planting. Right now it is 11 degrees with a biting north wind. I think my planting days are still far off in the distance though one can dream and prepare. I think I'll pull out my seed pots and start there, maybe that will encourage spring to come sooner.
And another, older illustration that fits this theme well, "roots."

6. Where My Librarian Peoples At?

Let no one say I do not love my alma mater. A fellow Earlhamite (KILL, QUAKERS, KILL!) who is also a librarian sent this info to me recently. Person in question is an ALA Emerging Leader and they want all of us librarians to take a survey.

We've decided to survey as broad a spectrum of library professionals as possible in order to see what we think of ourselves. Please take a few minutes to fill out our survey. We'll be presenting the results and a plan of action as a poster session at ALA annual conference.
Your goal, oh fellow children and YA librarians, is to tip the balance towards the kidlit spectrum. It takes like three minutes anyway. Non-librarians, I'm afraid you'll just have to hold off on this one. My apologies.
