Lately, my partner and I have been making our way through Black Mirror in the evenings as a way to unwind after a long time of work. Only it’s not exactly the most relaxing, mindless sort of television, so we often end up more keyed up afterwards than not.
What is Black Mirror? It’s hard to describe, but I would call it The Twilight Zone for our age. Where The Twilight Zone tackled topics like isolation, deception, witch hunts—topics relevant in the 1950s, still in the midst of a Cold War and dealing with McCarthyism and the Communist blacklists—Black Mirror deals with ideas more relevant to us: our relationship with media and technology. The Black Mirror of the title refers to the black mirrors in our lives: our screens. Our phone screens, our TV screens, our computer screens.
Elsewhere on the internet, I’ve seen Black Mirror described as science fiction, as horror, as suspense, and sometimes, as satire. I never really thought of programs like Black Mirror or The Twilight Zone as satire, but it did get me thinking.
I am a fan of satire. I love when writers and comedians hang lampshades on the ridiculous elements in our society. But if someone were to ask me to define satire, I’m not sure I could come up with a good definition, or even that many good examples, especially if Black Mirror falls under that umbrella.
In literature, of course, the work of Jonathan Swift is largely satirical. His A Modest Proposal is generally the first piece of work that comes to mind when people think of satire. By default I tend to think of satire funny, but Black Mirror, while darkly humorous at times, is not what I call funny. It’s more often what I call unsettling. It makes me think, it makes me uncomfortable, and I like that it makes me uncomfortable.
I’ve always admired satirists. I think the ability to wield your words as metaphorical weapons against the follies and evils of society is both admirable and incredibly difficult. Satire, I think, is hard to sustain in long form, just as I think horror is often difficult to sustain over the length of a novel. (I tend to think the short story format works best for both.) When we read novels, I think a vast majority of people read for story and character and less about A Grand Idea. Satire, by its very nature, is more about the Idea than the Characters, or the Character as Example. Many of the characters in Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone are like that: used to illustrate a point.
I think speculative fiction (specifically a lot science fiction) can also be about Ideas more than Characters. In the past year, I read two science fiction novels that grappled with the notion of gender: Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie and Lock In by John Scalzi. Both novels are quite good, and while I found their different uses of gender interesting, I connected emotionally with the former but not as much with the latter. Why is that? Perhaps it’s a failing on my part, but I felt Ancillary Justice was about one character’s journey, whereas Lock In was more about a concept. But does that mean Lock In is a “lesser” novel? I don’t think so. I tend to think of Lock In as an Idea Novel, more concerned with questions than characters. A form of satire, if you like.
That’s it from me! What do y’all think? Do you like Idea Novels? Or not?

- Strive to know nothing about the real lives and histories of Native peoples. Knowing is counterproductive and can be used against you if you accidentally let something real slip in. Do not do any research at all. That way, your tribe will be a genuine object of your invention, and no one will be able to accuse you of cultural appropriation.
- Invent a tribe. Give it a name that sounds kind of sort of like an Indian word. Or forget it—don’t give your tribe an actual name. Rather, refer to your tribe in a way that relates to a well-known stereotype. “People of Chance,” as an example, works well, because it will remind readers of casinos and how wealthy Indian people are. If you’re a little unsure, feel free to work in a backstory about gaming and skilled tribal lawyers.
- Write as though your invented tribe is just like any other transplanted culture with the exception of periodic decorative localized mythology. There should be no long memory stories of things that have happened where your tribe lives. Rather, for instance, you might go on and on about your tribe’s ostentatious show of material wealth—curbs that “gleam with gold,” an abundance of luxury cars, “gold plaques embedded in the adobe walls” and everyone wearing business suits “finer than the best designer fashions.”
- Assign at least some of your tribal characters names that sound vaguely “Indian.” To do that, make sure that the names contain lots of vowels; something like “Chowilawu” might be a good example. Don’t worry that someone might think the names of your Indian characters mean something. They don’t have to—they’re Indian.
- Describe your tribal characters as having small but important Indian mannerisms. For example, make sure that at least one of your Indian characters sits cross-legged on an animal skin. That will remind readers of the good times in kindergarten when they were instructed to sit “Indian style” for long periods of time.
- Make sure that the main character (preferably white and male) bonds with a member of your invented culture. Your Indian character need not be developed in any sense, because his only purpose is to teach your main character a major life lesson, after which he expires or goes back to whatever mystical land he comes from. Feel free to use this Native mentor in the style of any of the old tropes: Black nanny, Asian martial arts master, or supernaturally animated Indian doll who lives in a cupboard.
- Create new racial slurs to take the place of discredited old ones. “Redskins,” for instance, would be totally last century for a dystopian story. Try something like “slot monger,” or something else that you can make sound vaguely sexual, yet have a backstory that creates deniability.
- Put the power in the hands of your invented culture. Make sure that some of the members of your tribe express xenophobic opinions, such as referring to other tribes as “Low-Rez.” This will make the point that xenophobia is logical when it exists in empowered communities.
- Because there is no cultural attribution, feel free to use whatever stereotype or debunked expectation you may envision. It’s totally appropriate in this case to evoke offensively weird stories as long as you don’t name your tribe. For instance, you can have characters in your tribe hunting for a male mountain lion in order to transplant his heart into a dying Native elder for whom this animal is his “spirit guide.”
- Make sure to work in tropes that are pseudo-spiritual-cultural givens for your tribe: spirit animals and vision quests, for instance. And, above all, make sure that your main Native character, despite—or because of—his otherworldly psychic gifts, gets killed off.
- Now, take out your checklist. Invented tribe—check. No real reference to land, language, culture, community–check. No history or memory stories—check. No Indigenous meaning to names or anything else—check. Stereotypical mannerisms—check. Trope-type mentor—check. New racial slur to replace old ones—check. Xenophobic power—check. Offensively weird rituals—check. More tropes—check. Main Native character gets killed off—check.
- Done! Now sit back and collect your starred reviews for creating a multicultural dystopian novel with mystical Indian characters whose only raison d’etre is to interact with a white hero in a mentor role worthy of inclusion in a 1950s flick.
- On the off chance that you are criticized for inaccuracy, cultural appropriation, racism, or just plain abysmal writing, make sure to respond immediately—preferably with a vague reference to political correctness, reverse racism and/or the humorless nature of the critic. Mention how sensitive you tried to be. Use the phrase “considered carefully” to insure that everyone understands how hard you worked at appropriate representation. You can always fall back on the fact that you invented your tribe and therefore are immune to criticism, but it is worth trying to put the reviewer on the defensive—especially if the reviewer happens to be Native and has worked in the area of American Indians in children’s literature for many years.

Back in March, sj tweeted to me about this new informal club that Becoming Cliché was starting: the From the Bowels of Obscurity Children’s Book Club [pause while we wait for our inner 12-year-olds to stop giggling at “bowels.” Hee!] Y’all may remember some of my previous posts on nostalgic Juv/YA books (see the “nostalgia” […]

Signs when a barrio gets gentrified | Benefits for barrio gente |
1. When the forecast calls for "surf's up" on the beach or mountain snow, gentry's trash & recycle bins hit the curbside days before scheduled pick-up, encouraging burglaries. | Since gentry obviously aren't home, this gives you time to search their bins for aluminum cans and junk to sell at your biannual yard sale, if you simultaneously watch your casa. |
2. Yards that never had gardens are suddenly filled with lush plants, tall green trees and expert landscaping, making yours look like a monte with a barber-college haircut. | You won't have to nag your esposa to cut the lawn or weed the garden anymore because there's no way yours can ever look as suave or verde as theirs. |
3. On the other hand, that deceased viejita's rosebeds are pulled up and replaced by formulaic gentry-landscapes that produce a few small flowers with little maintenance. | Your d-i-y landscaping is the most unique around, and scrawny roses you transplanted when everybody was at the viejita's funeral make gentry think you got a green thumb. |
4. Newspapers on gentry's front yards pile up because they all have wireless IPods & IPads and don't read print--or went skiing--but have too much disposable income and don't cancel their subscriptions. | You don't waste money anymore on subscriptions; you just take your dog on his customary, new, morning walk, nonchalantly pick up your free copy and your esposa compliments you for getting up off your fat nalgas. |
5. The viejitos who struggled along with their walkers don't come by anymore to help improve your pocho Spanish, and the young, fit güera/güero joggers never stop, unless they need a translator. | Young, fit, güeras (or güeros, if that's how you jog), jogging--paint your own picture and also see #6. |
6. New, monolingual neighbors have replaced the fluent Spanish-speakers who stopped by on Fridays to chat and help you improve your pocho bilingualism, so now you always converse in English-only. | Your status rises when your pocho Spanish makes you El Primo Translator of the block, and you now translate for landscaping, drywall and roofing vatos redoing the barrio, and they envy your English fluency. |
7. Your neighbors' pure-breds are fully trained, bark less and live inside more than your mongrel, targeting you for nuisance-dog complaints. | When robbers check out your block, they stay away from your casita and its unsocialized, barking mongrel, making you look smart to la esposa. |
8. New, shining, MPG & GPS-equipped silver cars sit in gentry driveways, increasing local car thefts and making your old troca look like it belongs to one of the roofers. | There's more neighbors with working cars who you can ask to boost your worthless troca's battery on sub-zero mornings, if they're not skiing. Plus, see #7 above. |
9. Gentry breweries and cafes have replaced your dive bars and cheap taco joints, forcing you to drive miles on Fridays for tus traguitos and some refritos con green chile picoso. | You save chingos by buying six-packs and bags of chicharrones, while spending more time training your mongrel out in your front yard, waiting for translation requests and Benefit #5. |

Wow, I LOVE the design of the Lake Geneva Library!
And I was a huge fan of the Sweet Valley books as a kid, too!
It’s a very cool building, definitely, both inside and out. And fellow-SV-fan-high-five!
