1. Chris Rankin One of 1,000 Who Signed a British Students’ Petition

Chris Rankin, the actor who portrayed Percy Weasley in the “Potter” films, has signed a students’ petition that opposes a plan to split his old sixth-form college in two, the BBC reports. (For those unfamiliar with the concept of a sixth-form college: It’s a form of schooling in Britain that students between the ages of 16-19 can attend after high school in order to acquire advanced qualifications.)  Rankin became involved with the campaign out of concern regarding future plans for his former school.

Mr Rankin, 32, who went to Northgate, said: “It’s a great shame – there has always been competition between the two schools, yet you came together at the sixth form.

“It feels like Northgate are being excluded here and the petition shows how strongly pupils feel.”

Lucy Spinks, 17, a DSFC pupil behind the petition, said: “It’s fantastic we’ve got support from Chris Rankin.

“Pupils will lose out and you’re going to end up with two separate sixth forms, on the same site, with no crossover of teachers and two separate classes for the same subject. It doesn’t make sense.”

It seems that Rankin, similar to Percy, isn’t afraid to show a bit of school spirit. Good for him for becoming involved in a cause he cares about!

The photographs will grace the jacket of Athill's new hardback Instead of a Book (6th October) plus paperback reissues of Stet, Yesterday Morning and Instead of a Letter.

Granta's artistic director Michael Salu said he had decided it would be interested to bring together "two rather distinguished individuals from different generations" for the images.
